Man, this was a challenging one to record that definitely pushed my capabilities as a lead player! Nonetheless, it was super fun to attempt the challenge of playing along with Louis Dowdeswell on his 2018 recording of Frosty The Snowman arranged by Callum Au. Please enjoy Day 9!

This is another cool big band Christmas album I discovered as I was searching for various lead excerpts to record for this year. Here is Winter Wonderland recorded by the United States Air Force Airmen of Note arranged by Alan Baylock from the 2009 album “Christmas Time is Here”. Please enjoy Day 8!

As I was searching for tracks to record for this year’s Christmas Lead Licks, I stumbled upon this really neat 1961 Stan Kenton album “A Merry Christmas!”, which features a full brass & rhythm section big band, containing mellophones in the place of the saxophones. This arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen stuck out for me. Please enjoy Day 7!

This swinging up-tempo version of Jingle Bells is from Diana Krall’s 2005 “Christmas Songs” album featuring the great Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. I hope you enjoy Day 6!

We have made it to our halfway point in our holiday countdown, and I wanted to present the classic 1950 version of the holiday song we all know and love! Here is the lead trumpet melody in Bing Crosby & the Andrews Sisters’s recording of Mele Kalikimaka for Day 5! Please Enjoy!

I found this version of You’re a Mean one Mr. Grinch arranged by Victor Goines from a 2018 live-streamed holiday concert presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center! Such a great arrangement of a great holiday tune for Day 4! Enjoy my attempt to try and play along with the great Ryan Kisor on lead trumpet! Please Enjoy!

To feature a little taste of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, here is their arrangement of Let it Snow from the 2015 record “A Big Phat Christmas - Wrap This!” I remember playing fourth trumpet on this chart back in high school, and thought it would be fun to revisit it and try out the lead part for Day 3! Please Enjoy!

This was such a fun track to transcribe and record. It’s a real joy to play along with the great Louis Armstrong on his famous 1953 version of Cool Yule. Although this isn’t a traditional lead trumpet big band track, it’s too hip to not include in this year’s lead licks for Day 2! Please Enjoy!
