    I know five really good friends that get together a few times a week on the treadmill‘s at their local gym and run for an hour. They are all various ages and various levels of fitness. They just get together on the treadmill‘s and run and talk and have a great time. After about a year or so one of the guys asked another guy how far he’s running what’s his heart rate and how much weight he’s lost. He answers his friends question and the person who asked gets discouraged because his numbers are nowhere near his friends numbers. Now because it seems his friend is benefiting more than he is, he decides that running is no longer for him. What a shame.

    Wrong. It’s the blowhard instructors and endless drilling that make people miserable. We never even use the moves we drill anyways.

    In my humble opinion, injuries are a huge reason why people get discouraged.

    • @djmyrick

      Oh man. True. Injuries are definitely discouraging. I've had two major ones, and surgery was required on one. That can be hard to overcome. Thankful to have some great PT folks to get me back on track. And also good teammates that know how to take care of each other. Thanks for the input!

    • @redheart3924

      Totally agree on committing oneself to PT and strength training after an injury. It would be nice if more schools focused 90% of mat time on skill development rather than just letting people roll with each other at a high intensity. There is definitely a time to up the intensity but I personally absorbed much more at a quicker rate when I slowed things down and understood the application.

      Agreed and some people will say that grappling is safer than striking because there's little to no CTE. End of the day, combat sports are rough. It's just about mitigating the injuries as much as possible.

    Great video. I started BJJ in my early 40’s with quite a few other guys of similar age. We always felt like our greatest advantage was starting at an age where life had already humbled us many times over and showed us that the lessons to get through any struggle or curveball could come from anywhere. I especially love drilling techniques with these older guys because we have no ego about feed back but are also very open to analysis of what works specifically for body types and how to adjust and tweak accordingly, because let’s be real….past 40 your hips knees back shoulders….they don’t always move how you ask them to move 😀

    Blue here, I started at 40, this is my third year doing BJJ. A lot has changed since then and I'm more happy doing BJJ now than before. I used to over worried about little things. I recovered from an ACL injury and the mentally challenged. I remember been mad at the guy 😅 and now it is all about the journey. I tapped often and quickly but I am more happy during training. Now I try to organize what I'm doing, I work on doing it right before I was more let's say, more active, less technical, and more stressed out lol

    #2 is great, but don't confuse it with both you and your partner helping one another with the technique the professor just showed. Sometimes you feed off one another drilling going "Is this what prof said?" and you kinda coach one another. NOt even really coach but clarify like "is this right? How he showed it?" . If you have a good partner you'll pick up something you missed and vice versa and then yeah when both of you are lost you just call the professor to show you again. lol. Great vid.

    White belt here. Gonna be totally honest here. There are times when I have trouble seeing how a technique that is being taught can be applied while rolling because the opponent is at a higher level than the technique being taught. That's been my experience so there's a bit of a disconnect between technique and practice. I'm not saying that that's all the techniques, but a good number of them. And nevermind a stronger and bigger opponent which is almost always the case for my gym. Again, white belt here putting in my own two cents.

    • @djmyrick
      @djmyrick 9 дней назад

      You make a good observation. Higher belts know how to counter/defend so often times white belts struggle to implement techniques taught in class to rolling. I think that’s normal. Two things: 1. Find a higher rank that will work with you, allow you the freedom to work those techniques with minimum resistance. 2. Find someone before or after class to drill the techniques. Having times outside of class can help some things click, and retain. Easier to implement in live rolling when you’ve drilled it successfully…and you can have them increase intensity each time to help get more of a live roll feel.

    • @bujindork
      @bujindork 8 дней назад

      You have to learn the techniques anyway. Once you get the experience of years of rolling you learn to apply well known techniques through chains and hiding them within other techniques. I just takes awhile to learn.

      I was always taught that white belts should focus on defending and escaping. Or, maybe not. To each their own.🕺🏾

    • @fitzhugh2542
      @fitzhugh2542 6 часов назад

      @@gojuboxer4224 That's not always the case though. We do positional sparring and white belts can be in the attacking position. Plus it typically takes 2 years to get a blue belt I'm told (of course that can vary), but are you telling me that in those 2 years all you'd be doing as a white belt is defending and escaping? Plus white belts can compete, so you have to attack in that situation. So not sure if I agree that white belts should only focus on defending and escaping.

    • @djmyrick
      @djmyrick 21 день назад

      It takes time to find those sweet spots for subs. If you hit them just right with perfect timing they can come quick! But also your opponent may defend quickly, so we just have to be patient, and develop our finishing skills. Sometimes that means small adjustments to get the finish, sometimes it may mean switching to a follow up submission and catching that one. Keep learning, cause at brown belt I feel like one neat thing that’s happening is I’m developing finish technique like never before. That’s been encouraging.

      How do you know about most gyms? I've been to plenty and most, by far, were not dangerous. There are reckless individuals out there, but most people in most gyms are safe. Of course, if you want to grapple like a jerk there is a higher chance of getting that energy back.

Also, some of the best bjj safety advice I've ever heard is just "don't roll with assholes" lol

      8 years training and the worst was bad…fully torn pec major tendon. Surgery and out for about 4-6 months. I know injuries can happen, but 90% of that one was due to me not taking care of myself outside of the gym. Walked in at 40 and tried to go 1000 miles an hour with no warm up. I do not recommend that! Lol

    Hydrate the night before, and then hydrate some more before class. Replenish slowly after class/working out. Waiting to hydrate until you need it means you waited too long. For me, taking water breaks in the middle of class has hindered my ability to roll and train at my best. It’s the same with running; if I drink water while I run, it makes me have to look for a toilet. Peak performance is helped by pre-hydrating.
