Flying S Land and Cattle
Добавлен 19 мар 2016
Video clips of ranching in the Shields Valley, located in southwest Montana. Our family's have been ranching in the area since the 1860's, currently the 7th generation is on the ranch, although he is a little young to do much work at this time. The ranch runs a commercial feeder cattle operation of Black Angus/Herford cross cattle. We also sell a few hundred tons of horse and cow hay, and the occasional small grain crop with our crop rotation.
Swathing Sanfoin
This was the first hay we cut this year (2018). We use a New Holland HW340 with a 16' discbine header.

Using the John Deere 7130 with a ProAg round bale unroller. The hay is Willow Creek Winter Wheat Hay, the cows seem to like it.
Stacking Small Squares with New Holland Balewagon
Просмотров 46 тыс.7 лет назад
We use a New Holland 1069 Balewagon or "Stack Cruiser" to stack all our little squares. Before we went to round bales 10 years ago we put up over 20,000 little squares a year. It takes about 10-15 minutes to pick up and stack 169 bales.

Moving cows up Rock Creek Canyon in the Crazy Mountains. We have been doing this drive since 1963. It has to be one of the most scenic cattle drives in the country.
Making Round Bales

Baling some alfalfa/grass hay with a Vermeer XL and a John Deere 4250. The baler has made over 18,000 bales and it still makes a decent bale.

Putting up round bales of Willow Creek Winter Wheat hay. This is a beardless winter wheat that can be feed as hay. The rake is and H&S pulled by a 7130 John Deere. To bale we are using a Vermeer 605XL pulled by at 4250 John Deere. The fields produced well for dry land on a dry year, 80 bales on 55 acres.

Twin raking and round baling dryland Sanfoin hay. Sanfoin preforms well on dryland ground and tests for nutrients as high as alfalfa. The cows enjoy it also. We are pulling the H&S twin rake with a John Deere 7130 followed by a Vermeer 605 XL round baler pulled by a John Deere 4250.

12" per year. Wow. We get tbat each spring. Usually get 50" in Missouri
How long did it take to dry down? We ranch here in washington and have been looking at doing something similar
I think it took 4-5 days instead of 3 like hay is in our area. It has been quite a while since we cut this. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
@@flyingslandandcattle6701 that dried down pretty decent for you then. How come you guys don't do it anymore! Looks like you got a lot of feed out of it
@@walkingtbeefpremiumbeef7766, it did make good feed. The main reason is it takes a lot of water, and we only had one field with a pivot that would provide that, so we just rotated with our Alfalfa crop.
Looks nice.
Thanks
Beautiful country.
Never had a Vermeer I've always had JD balers bales look way better than new holland I actually posted a video of 2 broke down NH and my Deere to the rescue lol
Do you like the bale unroller? Do they still manufacture the ProAg bale unroller?
Dude Solfest We like the unroller. I dont believe that they still make them. It is nice that it doesnt grind it, and that it unrolls to the side. It leaves a narrower windrow then a truck ned feeder.

Did you cover the sacks afterwards to keep the rain and snow off of them?
We usually don't cover the stacks. Most of our hay is cow hay and we dont get much moisture (12" a year). Some of the top bales might get a little moldy by spring.
The way they are picked up and stacked tight it keeps the weather out. We broke many a stack of the small bales to reload onto transports and they were nice and green inside, just the outsides were bleached.
Looks nice.
How many head of cattle do you have
We go to the mountains with around 20 pair.
We just purchased a new 504N and really love it also
We are looking at upgrading in the next year or two. All we have had is Vermeer round balers. Thanks for watching!
We had a NH BR740, it was junk brand new first day in the field. THe Vermeer is way better in my opinion
+Georgia Swampman I have only know 2 other people with New Holland balers and 1 of them said the same thing.
