Hawks Film Room Ep 14: How the Bucks Physicality Ended the Hawks' NBA Cup Run
The Atlanta Hawks Film Room Podcast: a Hawks-centric series hosted by David Lee that brings fans from opposing teams to breakdown film and talk through the numbers that defined each and every game.
Episode 14 follows the Hawks' tough loss in Vegas to the Bucks in the NBA Cup Semifinals. Alongside special guest Stev (@Bucks_Breakdown), we discussed how the Bucks completely took the Hawks out of their game, why physicality on the perimeter is so tough for ATL to deal with, the difference in offensive execution down the stretch and why a dynamic center would be a game changer for both teams.

    Landry and Quinn have a tricky decision to make. I think most of us want to see a move made to bring in another offensive piece (shooter). But were already limited in resources, especially not having our own future picks. We also would be delaying the offensive growth of our youngsters who need all the minutes they can get now. We'd basically be sacrificing future for now in my opinion which I'm not sure is best for us in the long run. What do u guys think?

    Nobody can create their own shot in the half core consistently other Trae. that’s why the offence is a train wreck when he goes to the bench. They scored 0 fgs in that first 4-5 min stretch he went to the bench

    Bro as usual you're on point, agree 100% with the loose handle analysis. This has always been Dre's (12) biggest buggaboo which after his recent return looked like he had some newly found confidence in. He's been getting to the cup and finishing at pretty high level. It was obvious the Bucks decided that Dre', Dyson, and especially Risacher were gonna have to prove the could handle the rock under serious pressure and physicality and we see how that turned out.

    Love your channel! I listen to you and browland for my hawks coverage. Couple questions- do you believe the next starting center is on the team? OO seems inconsistent. What do you think is the next piece to unlock more offense-- sharpshooter(someone better than Matthews, or another creator, Kyrie type. Thanks for the great coverage!

    Can’t be too mad at this one , defense wss good tonight especially on dame but the offense just never got going outside of Trae & bogi (have we ever said that in the Trae era)..and the missed free throws shot is in the foot ..Jalen ankle seem to bother him a bit so glad he got a few days off , glad to see it seems Trae is back & love the direction of this team .. would love to see us make a move for an extra shooter tho , it’s clear we need some extra juice on offense

    Braking News! Dyson’s younger bro Dash just signed his first Pro contact at the age of 16 with Melbourne United in the top league NBL. He will be on a “next star” program that is deigned specifically to get Aussie and young Ballers world wide to show their shit! They play as kids against big body pros that don’t hold back. It’s a near perfect fast tracked environment that feeds their confidence and rapid growth as a baller! Recent graduates include Lamello Ball, Alex Sarr, Josh Gidday and about five to six other prospects. And he as a six six frame at 16 he’s got every chance to add to his hight and frame. Interestingly he is already has a dog defense attitude on the D but is tracking to be a really, really good offensive PG. The folks in the know down Bendigo way say that he is an absolute gun. At 16? Remember that name! Dash Daniels! He could be in the real life movie of the Incredibles. 🤔

    Also, how do feel about Jalen guarding KAT similarly to how the Celtics use Tatum on the opponents bigs and just putting Capela on OG or Josh Hart? Do you think that Jalen is good enough as a helper yet for that to happen?

    • @dlee4three11
      @dlee4three11 11 дней назад

      Jalen’s so good as a helper that it’s tough to put him directly on the ball versus a 5, especially considering the Hawks weakside rim protection isn’t nearly as strong without him playing that role. I think he could survive a couple minutes there but he hasn’t yet mastered guarding PNRs in drop and probably doesn’t have the strength to match up physically against bigs consistently, could definitely survive for a couple possessions though

    You can't really say anything bad about Trae Young this game....if you are you are reaching. We all know he is having Achilles issues..which affects your jump shot, speed, agility everything. With that being said. He's been leaning on his team not really looking to score. But with JJ in foul trouble majority of the game. He had to hunt his shot more than he has this season. 31pt 20 assist and every point and assist was necessary and crucial for the win...🤷🏿‍♂️

      @dlee4three11 23 дня назад

      I think consistency comes from continuity. The more minutes the guys play with one another, the more connected they’ll be defensively. I’m sure Quin and the coaching staff are preparing them adequately, it just takes everyone being healthy to build that cohesiveness defensively

    Would like this twice if I could. Really dig the deep dive here. Glad you highlighted that the 3P% isn't entirely luck-driven. The accepted wisdom that 3P% is beyond a defense's control kinda drives me nuts.

    • @dlee4three11
      @dlee4three11 23 дня назад

      100%, there’s a reason great defenses are also great at limiting 3PA. There’s a measure of variability teams can’t control, but they absolutely have some say in who is taking those 3s. Great offense force teams to pick between 2 great offensive options, but smart defenses take away the most effective action and funnel the ball elsewhere

    Bro from the 1st time I saw u on the podcast with Brad I could tell u were very talented at this. This video is the perfect example of what I've been try to say. I've been paying much more attention to the defensive end over the offense this year and it's been driving me mad. I couldn't really explain what the issue was it just seemed we were forced into a hectic recovery effort every-time down the floor. You can tell the focus is playing harder on that end of the court this year, but as u showed the attention to detail just isn't there. (I ask this question in one of Brad's podcast) if maybe the issue is more so the coach that's responsible for the team defense, what do u think? Lastly how much improvement if any do u think can be expected by the end of the season? Thanks for your effort bro this is already my favorite podcast !

    • @dlee4three11
      @dlee4three11 23 дня назад

      Thank you for the high praise bro I love to hear that you’re enjoying the pod. I think the coach is responsible for the scheme and coaxing effort out of guys, and in both respects the Hawks are better than they’ve ever been since Trae was drafted. My biggest critique of Quin is his adaptability, sometimes it feels like we are too stubborn with our defensive approach on a night to night basis and we get burned as a result.
