Glaze Firing Reveal and Repair

Whew! Some strong emotions with this kiln opening. There was quite a bit of a learning curve with the Amaco Cosmos glazes (my lack of research on the glazes) and the process for cleaning up my mess. Extremely pleased with the Diamond Core sanding bats and the Advancer kiln shelves. The pottery inside the glaze kiln includes custom mugs, a moon bowl and two bases for moon lamps, "swung" vases (m...

Great kiln load! Thank you for sharing 😊. You are the Queen of pumpkins 🎃 Please share what you are using on those gorgeous pumpkins that have the matte finish. And that frozen pond mushroom 🤩
On the pumpkins, I am using underglazes. As they are not intended for food use, I did not put a clear glaze on top of them because I wanted the matte finish. I'm using flame orange as the base, and then I mixed flame orange with red brown to get the darker orange. The frozen pond is: obsidian (x2), running hot chowder (x2 glazed on like polkadots), and iron luster (x2 over the entire top of the cap). I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Those are such awesome creations! LOVE the huge mushroom! GREAT Frozen Pond Technique! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I will be making another huge mushroom. Hopefully, the next one will not crack. :)
Thank you for sharing, you are so talented! ❤️🇨🇦
Thank you for watching!
I love love love your style of work ! You are so talented ! I would really appreciate if you could share what glazes you used. They are all so beautiful!
Which pieces would you like the glazes for?
@@bynonstudiosart I loved the orange underglaze on the pumpkins, what color did you shade with ? Also the mushrooms at the end… the bluish brown glaze ! Thank you so much !
The shade for the pumpkins was one part red brown and 2 parts flame orange underglaze. I needed an orange that wasn't so bright, and that was the solution I came up with. As to the bluish mushroom caps, that's Mayco's Cenote.
@@bynonstudiosart Oh my gosh ! Thank you so much for being so generous with your talent !😀😀
@@aprillemaster8142 You're more than welcome 😊
Hi, our husbands know each other from the 53rd. When Mark Stevens was up for a visit he told me about your RUclips channel since I fell big time into pottery 2 years ago. I’m enjoying your channel! For the mushrooms I make with attached stems, I stand up inside a kiln post for firing (although my big mushrooms I make separate and attach afterwards with a 2-part 5 minute epoxy). I like your foam idea for gluing. I poke holes in a cardboard box to jam the stems in and then balanced the cap with epoxy on top. Although there are sometimes epoxy drips to clean up. We’ll I just wanted to say hi and tell you to keep up the good work:)
Hello! If you're ever down on the coast, please let me know. I'd love to get together and share ideas. I fell in about 10 years ago, and love every minute of it. As to the mushrooms, they are still a work in progress... I would love to see pictures of yours. :)
@@bynonstudiosart I would love to visit next time I’m down that way! We live near Dallas now. The comment section is not letting me post my mushroom pics (although it could be me as I’m not good with computers).
I'm not sure if youtube allows pictures in comments (didn't think about that aspect).
How does one create a damp box. I plan to do this for my smaller work. I usually just wrap in a trash bag for a few days to a week before letting my work dry uncovered.
What I use is not a traditional damp box (I'm a little scared of mixing plaster). My box has some contractor's insulation board with holes drilled in it and a damp sham-wow towel (I saw another potter using one, and asked). It doesn't keep the clay damp as long as a traditional box, but it works for my purposes. I can usually keep a piece workable inside it for two weeks.
@@bynonstudiosartokay I will give this version of a damp box a try. Thank you.
It's also much lighter.
Hi, Ronda! Thanks for sharing your pumpkin creations. They are adorable. I would love to try them for the fall. BTW...LOVE Billy Joel!
He's my muse! I listen to him all the time. I was fortunate enough to go see him a couple of years ago. He's amazing. I hope I'm able to still create at that level when I'm his age.
Your wheel is so quiet. What kind is it? I appreciate how you explain every step - why you’re compressing the base, etc. I’m new to pottery and your videos are very helpful. I look forward to your posting more.
It's a Shimpo Whisper. I love it. Thank you for watching. :)
Thank you!!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching! I truly appreciate it.
Your design and glaze work is fabulous❤
Thank you! I love the way the glazes interact with one another; however, sometimes... my glaze ideas don't fit with my creations. :D
He lo ❤❤❤
Hello! I'm so glad you are here!
Those leaves look great but they aren't available in the UK. Love your fairy houses. Thank you fr Sharing.
Oh! I'm so sorry to hear that. The website I order them from is learnfiredarts.com . Not sure if that helps or not.
@@bynonstudiosart Thanks but they wont post tot he UK because f the cost of postage being too much.
The scoring tool is called a "cross hash tool" but everyone just calls it a scoring tool LOL
Thank you! I let my mom know (she keeps asking me).
Very fun! I’d like to see your process on the face carvings as well.
I'll get one together and post it next week. Thank you for watching!
Yes, please come back and carve faces. I do carving, too. Wondering what your process looks like? Oh, and snowmen?! Must see those, too!!
I'm planning my next video to be about the carving of the pumpkins. I'll put the snowmen on my to-do list. Thank you for watching and letting me know your thoughts. :)
Ok I just found the video of them on their bottoms . Love them 👏
I addressed how I make the stakes in your previous comment. If you have any other questions, please let me know. :)
Would like to see the mushroom caps on their bottoms😊
I think that I actually forgot to create a video of them. All I do is extrude a 3/4 inch coil, taper one end to a soft point, and slightly round the other.
So pretty! Can’t wait to show Evie when she returns.
Yay!!! I hope she likes them.
Wow. These are all soooo beautiful!!!
Thank you so much! I'm truly enjoying creating these pieces.
Adorable!
Thank you! I'm so glad you like them. Creating them brings me joy!
So interesting and relaxing! I am intrigued to see the Jack making process.
Thank you! I'll record the process and share it. :)
So fun and informative!
I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video!
It's fantastic!!
Thank you! I'm obsessed with them!
Thank you for sharing! I made two pinch pot pumpkins yesterday. Wish I would have seen your video before, so I could use your stem idea. Guess I’ll have to make more!
I always seem to make them this time of year, and you can NEVER have too many pumpkins! :)
Love it!! Great explanations and good job.
Thank you! I always wonder if I'm giving enough or too much information.
Wow!! Those cosmos glazes have really caused a lot of problems for people. They are super specific when being used in a regular firing without the right firing schedule. You also can not put a liner glaze inside the piece. So whatever you put the cosmos glazes on you can’t put any glaze on the inside or other side of the pot. I’m so sorry this happened but thank goodness for advancer shelves!! The kiln probably didn’t overfire. It’s just that the glaze has to be really runny for the crystals to form. The moons are amazing!!! Also the cosmos glazes are not food safe. Please don’t take my comments the wrong way I’m just trying to help. When using the grinding or sanding discs on the wheel you really want to keep a lot of water on the wheel because the force of the wheel is throwing the water off as well as it evaporating. The more water the better and safer for you. You want those little shavings to stick to the water and not fly into the air. I hope this helped. That’s for showing how you saved them!!
Thank you for your thoughtfulness. I truly appreciate your insight. There was no intention on using the Cosmos glazes for anything other than decoration. 😊
What is the brand of contractors adhesive that you used on your mushrooms🇨🇦
I ended up using Gorilla's Max Strength Construction Adhesive Clear. I switched to it because I can purchase it in a smaller amount (2.5 ounces goes a long way, and I don't waste as much due to it drying up prior to me being able to use all of it.)
Thank you for sharing you artwork 😊🇨🇦
Thank you for watching my videos! I truly appreciate it.
I sent that link. Hope it helps
Thank you so much! I've added some to my cart.
Bynon---- AND that's why I won't use Cosmos glazes. Amaco has some fixin' to do. It just isn't worth it!
I'm just thankful that I was able to save my pieces. Also, please know that I take full blame for not researching the glazes prior to uses them.
Sorry about your mishap! I aspire to a set of shelves like those. I have a d core brand disc like yours. Works great but $$$. Recently I ordered a set of four flexible diamond sanding pads from Amazon. Dirt cheap, work great.
@rondabynon3275 See if this works….
Use them wet at the sink. Very effective
Thank you!
How amazing is this bowl? The glaze is outstanding. What kind of shelfs you use where the drippings went off so quick? Cheers Suza
The shelves are called Advancer Kiln Shelves. Most pottery supply stores carry them. The price runs a little high, but they are worth the investment.
@@bynonstudiosartthank you Ronda for that quick response. I’ll try to find them online. And at least I know now how to write ‘shelves’ correctly. I love your Chanel. Thanks for sharing
Good old Diamond Core. Your moon bowl and lamp bases look fabulous ❤
Thank you! I absolutely LOVE all of my tools that I've bought from Diamond Core. I'm planning on sharing that process in a future video. It's quite a process, so it will have to be another series. :)
Amaco has a long list of instructions for the cosmos glazes. Including how to make drip catchers because of how runny they are.
I believe I was just too excited to use them. Thank You! I will look into your suggestion on the drip catchers.
Nice job grinding the amber vase!!! You now can enjoy your beautiful work!
Yes! Thank you!
Sorry to see the melting but thank you for showing the repairs that was so cool to watch 🤩 also new subscriber here 😊
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. When I went out searching, I didn’t see much on the cleanup. My husband told me after cleaning the shelf that I should have recorded that also. Next time… but I truly hope nothing like that happens again.
So sorry about your melties! Love your Northern Lights bowl. Jasmine is super cute!
Thank you!!! I’m so glad you like my work. I’m getting ready to share how I make the pumpkins in my next video. I hope you’ll watch.
