I know comment is a year old, but very nice Midget.... I'm digging the ghost stripe! Much obliged for posting.
👍
My son and I just bought a 70 Midget and are having a blast fixing it up. I have had old VWs all my life so it's interesting to dive into the world of British engineering. Can you do another video on the driving experience of the 5 vs 4 speed? This is his daily driver so we're interested in the upgrade if it really makes that much of a difference.
Hello Paul, are you certain that the transmission came from an ‘86 Corola? thanks.
Yes
How much did the bel housing cost and who makes the rear mount for the transmission and body? is this Hydraulic and what is needed to make that work......
The total with shipping and all parts mentioned from Australia was slightly over $ 1,000. I had to fab up/make the transmission mount that I welded into the car. Yes it is hydraulic and uses the stock slave cylinder.
Very nice job! Definitely labor intensive to get it to the finished line! First prize on your efforts. Show room restoration!
Sheesh! Read through the comments, you really been working on the restoration for 10 years! Definitely its a labor of love. Most trade their cars in after 6 max. I'm imagining you have completed it by now. Its pristine! I'd be afraid to drive it after all the time and work you put in it. Its a 'head turner' ! Beautiful
Hahahah.. Yep it was over 10 years from the time I started the restoration until I got it back on the road. Thanks for the nice comments.
AWESOME! I did a base coat/ clearcoat in lacquer, wet sanded then buffed on a Oldsmobile delta 88...(boat!). Definitely a lot easier than using urethane! BUT,... Enamel base with a urethane additive, flows nice, get the right pressure on the gun, and the right weather conditions, no orange peel, no sanding, no buffing. Done! That MG, you can be proud of it!
Can't wait for more
Hello Paul, I have enjoyed your videos. Thanks for posting. Do you have any photos of the sensor installation on your header for the AFR gauge? I want to install a gauge on my 1275 Bugeye but there is not a lot of room! Thanks very much. Lin
I had the same experience with my 60 MGA. Fired up perfect right after the rebuild. They are very forgiving engines. My car was at the exact same stage when I did my first run-up. No seats, no doors, no hood, etc - bare bones. You missed out on the best part though. After it's running, you gotta take it around the block! I did and it was a blast, just remember to hang on tight.
How much was that Midget purchase?
I paid $500 for the non-running 72 Midget.
@@paulshomegarage1542 Nice!
I owned one. Double clutch for first gear but it’s so low and rolling so slow you don’t need to get into first when rolling. Kinda cool anyway. Good 5sp idea but a lot of work. Vid plz when driving it.
Nice car, Paul. Beautiful colour.
Man. Cancer sucks. I’m guessing this truck is from up north?
Yep, North-East Pa.
Would the conversion have been easier fitting the 1.6 AGE Toyota engine too?
When I started the midget project 10+ years ago I sunk a TON of money into the original motor. If I had to do it over again I may look at other options ...but with all the upgrades I did the 1275 runs great and I am very happy with it.
@@paulshomegarage1542 It sure is a pretty car! I bet the 5 speed box makes it a much nicer drive.
you going to be changing the diff if not you wont get the full power upgrade from having a 5 speed
I don't feel it would be worth the expense/effort at this time.
Would a morris rear diff be better suited for the conversion? I am thinking of doing this 5 speed conversion for my mk1
Put the k series bmw twin cam motorbike head on it.... Great video..
This is great...
Nice!
Just wanted to know where you got the trim for the slots below the grill. I have a 78 just about together it on the road : )
I can’t remember who I bought it from but it is polished perforated stainless steel.
That is one beautiful car. I have a Austin Healey sprite mk3 with a 1275cc engine. My tachometer isn't working. Do you have any tips to get it working?
Unfortunately I have no tips for that…Mine is still not working properly due to the 123 distributor I am running.
Remove the cable at the back of the tach. If the cable spins when engine is running, most likely the plastic part is stripped in the tach needs replacing. If the cable doesn't spin, the issue is at the transmission end. The old tachs are mechanical and the plastic parts are what get stripped out. Another test is to remove cable at Trans, put in cordless drill and spin it, see if tach moves. Use these steps to figure out what the problem is, then order the part to replace from Moss Motors
Very nice job! Very labor intensive to get to those final results!
what trans is fitted
I put in a T-50 5 speed from a 1986 Toyota Corolla
Is it a US Corolla? I thought they went front wheel drive by 1986.
@@scottshure3389 Yes it is a 1986 US corolla. Not sure when they swapped to FWD.
Interesting project, nice colour. What has been done too the engine, has it been kept standard.
Thanks, The engine has been modified. A few things I did are Head ported, aluminum flywheel, 123 Bluetooth distributer, high compression pistons, performance cam, Vernier adjustable timing chain gear set, crankshaft and piston rods balanced....
Looks nice Paulie G. Did the the tectyl dry hard or is it some what soft and waxy?
Yes it drys hard, not waxy or sticky at all.
Nice job Mr.
What transmission did you use?
I used a 1986 Toyota Corolla T50 5 speed.
@@paulshomegarage1542 Thanks
Did you make a video on how you install that transmission?
You make me jealous Mr. loving the videos.
Transmission cooler = Wiffle Dicked
Good job Mr. keep us informed,😃
Nicely done, thanks for the video.
You think a retired fella like this with nearly 100 subscribers would put out a new video every now and then!
If you ever want to restore another I have one in my garage just like it.
Great vids! Question: Do you wet sand the interior places, as well? I.e. wheel wells, foot wells, tunnel, etc.? Never done this before so just curious. Thanks!
What carpet kit did you purchase and would u recommend it?
Nice car
Also, I'm in Rochester too!
Nice job on the chassis, going to watch the rest of your videos on this car now. I have two Mk1 Sprites to restore, a 58 and a 59. This is very interesting stuff.
I like the color of that sealer. Could you share the brand?
Thanks.. it was Shop Line 2K Urethane Sealer. JP331.
JP331 was the white and JP337 was Dark Grey
@@paulshomegarage1542 Thank you. I'm leaning toward those colors for my 76 midget. The modification to the liscen plate and the removal of the seam on the top of the back panels, did you have any reference sites for those changes? I like the look of that and if not to difficult I'd give it a try.
@@stephancathers1051 thanks again the mgexperienceforum is a GREAT source.
Tedious job Dude! Just came up on my feed. I'm sure it turned out perfect, you definitely have put in the hours up to now. But I gotta chuckle a bit when you started explaining what you have planned for 'tomorrow'. You sound excited at first, then when you continue down the 'check-off' list, I hear your demeanor change. If you're not done with this project, don't give in and take short cuts, If it is completed, .....It's an amazing build!
Dave from Rochester NY!!! lol I love it..."start up testing" sticker....omg. Congrats on a clean, smooth first fire!
Thanks Dave!
So reflective it may be a safety hazard for other drivers on a sunny day!!! lol
Congrats... super pumped to hear it run...
I’ve been waiting for this car to start up for as long as I could remember!
PAULIE F'N G!!!!!!!!! WOOOO HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Congratulations
Good job sounds great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, that tach is definitely wonky. Lol. Awesome video!
Looking really good; great work and she's going to be a beute when she's finished
Looks great!!!!!! Can't wait to see it in person.
