    I cannot hold 2 & 3down while I move the thumb under. No matter how much I twist my wrist. I must release to play the upper c with my thumb

    • @suzanneherman241
      @suzanneherman241 2 месяца назад

      That is perfectly fine. Never force or over-extend your fingers; keep the movement/stretch gentle. It is always necessary to keep your hand relaxed; this will enable your fingers/thumb to extend further providing more results. Remember, the exercise is to train your hand for more movement and strength; it takes time and repetition. I would also like to recommend my tutorial "Beginning Piano Exercise - Preparation for Scales, Arpeggios, and More." Even if the "Preparation" exercise is easy for you, it will provide more ease for the arpeggio exercises. You are on the right track! 🎵

      Yes, however the best way for you to learn to read music is with a "method book." There are online versions and hard copy versions of method books. My personal suggestion is a hard copy book. It will teach note reading and provide teaching pieces for you to practice. These books progress, adding more information and pieces for you to practice. As you learn to read music, you can simultaneously develop your finger technique with my lessons here. Best wishes with your piano practice!!

    What fingering you suggest for Db, Eb, Gb, Ab triads, what do you think about some technique -text´s authors who suggest about to use 123 fingering in this particular chords? Thank you

    • @suzanneherman241
      @suzanneherman241 3 месяца назад

      The Db major, Eb major, and Ab major arpeggios are all the same shape and therefore can have the same fingering. For instance, the Db major arpeggio would be 4th finger on Db, thumb on F, 2nd finger on Ab. A general guideline is to play the white note with the thumb when there two black notes in the arpeggio. For root position arpeggios with 3 black notes, the fingering generally would be 1, 2, 3. I hope that helps! 😊🎹

    Hi Suzanne, Even after all the tutorials and forums I've been pouring over and learning how to build the 7ths and leading tone 3rds in the Dominants I'm still confused about one thing. Using C as an example, I thought that one had to use the C scale to create the C, the F scale to create the F and the G scale to create the G. But I'm hearing you say that all the diatonic chords are determined by using only the Key's own scale -- or do both work? For building the Dominant chord does one just keep stepping past the octave C of degree 8? Does one only use other scales to determine the Secondary dominants or Dom 7ths? I just did a test: Using the key of A and the scale of A ____ A B C# D E F# G# A for the V chord E7 E G# B - D But the 7th tone needs to be flatted to a D and it is D already if I'm moving along in the A scale So if I use the E scale for the E it comes out right _________ E F# G# A B C# D# e I get E G# B - D# which when the seventh is flatted is a correct E7: E G# B - D But if I flatted the 7th degree of the A scale I get Db which isn't correct. E G# B-D is G Maj 7 right? If I tried to make 7ths out of the other roots in a key's scale I'd have to use their own scales wouldn't I? Is it because when creating the Dominant seventh E7 what would normally be the seventh degree is no longer in the leading tone position, a half step away from the root in the key of A? Thanks, Cliff longer a

    • @suzanneherman241
      @suzanneherman241 6 месяцев назад

      Hi Cliff, Congratulations! You are on the right track! The concept to remember is that the dominant seventh chord occurs naturally in all major keys, on the fifth note of the scale (the dominant). The seventh of the dominant seventh chord (which is the seventh above the root of the chord) will always be in the key signature. For example, in the key of E major (with F#, C#, G#, D#), the dominant seventh chord, built on the fifth tone of the E major scale, will be B, D#, F#, A. All dominant seventh chords (remember, this happens naturally), will consist of a major triad and a minor seventh. This combination of a major triad and a minor seventh, only occurs on the fifth tone of the scale creating the V7 chord. You mentioned secondary dominants. I would like to suggest having a thorough understanding of dominant seventh chords before moving into secondary dominants. Understanding the naturally occurring dominant seventh chords will enable a much easier understanding of secondary dominants. I hope this helps! Great job!

I put small coloured postit notes on my piano, and now my piano has strings. But as we go around the circle of fifths, the names make sense. I'm pleased you find these exercises helpful! Applying all of these exercises to one scale each practice session, I feel, is best. Once you have reached your goal for a particular scale such as a faster tempo or more octaves (which may take several or numerous practice sessions), move on to the next scale. Do this until you have mastered all major scales and all three forms of each minor scale. This will also allow you to pursue a variety of technical exercises to practice in addition to scales, during each session, such as octaves, thirds, arpeggios, independence, stretching, etc. Best wishes on your piano endeavors!

      I'm so glad you are learning to play the piano!! This exercise can definitely be challenging. Feel free to move your wrist to allow the thumb to gently stretch. For instance, when the right-hand thumb has trouble reaching under fingers 2 and 3, turn your wrist more to the right, giving your thumb more room to move under your hand. The left-hand wrist will move to more to the left. Be sure to remain gentle; don't over stretch. You will definitely be able to reach this goal little by little. I think one of the next tutorials I'll produce will be a wonderful preparatory exercise that specifically trains and isolates the thumb for moving under the fingers. Stay tuned; I think it will be very helpful. 🎵
