Simply Resilient Me
США
Добавлен 5 май 2023
Hey there! I'm Rachel. I'm a 2x breast cancer survivor , first diagnosed in 2017, then again in 2020.
It took those two diagnoses to realize that I have no desire to age "gracefully" on other peoples terms. I plan to age with attitude, embracing life, being unapologetically my authentic self and taking back my power and my health. I'm fortunate to grow older and I'm doing it on my terms, feeling my absolute best. I'm a research nerd at heart, and between the two diagnoses and all the side effects of treatments, I decided to educate myself to be better, stronger and healthier, physically and mentally, to avoid another recurrence. Everything I've learned has helped me to feel better than I ever felt before my initial diagnosis. I'm here to offer encouragement, motivation and maybe some mindset changes to help you be the best you can, with or without a cancer diagnosis, because we all need a little help every once in a while, and we all deserve to age with attitude.

taking a break is my mainstay - I call it a time out. just for a few minutes, set a timer, sometimes I sit on the floor, or even lay down. but taking 5 minutes when I need it. the other is remembering I don't have to do all of the things, just some. If I get all great, if its some, then I likely will want to do more. Good video and yeah you for getting it up.
I am no expert on cancer, but I do concur with your opinions. I believe the Mediterranean diet is so healthy because it excludes ultra processed foods. I note that most everyone, including me, tends to read their own biases into the broad categories associated with the med diet. I try to look at some more specifics of most prevelently traditionaly eaten in the Mediterranean and Sardinia (blue zone) in particular. For example, I note that the most used fruits such as olives, avacodoes, lemons, pompia, and prickly pears are low sugar. The most used are high fat. Grapes (high sugar) are fermented into wine. Cannonau is very high in resveritrol. Dairy is usually fermented. Pecorino cheese is A2, probiotic and high in C15 fatty acid. I also note how many of their vegies are high in inulin: garlic, onions, spiny artichoke, and asparagus. Many of the whole grains are made into sourdough bread that is actually fermented.
Because of those observations with related studies indicating benefits, I have added olive oil, avacodoes, Pecarino cheese, and asparagus to my diet. I'm still a no on grains. I think Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, MD is correct on his speculation of man's historical adaptation and change in diet. More and more we are getting away from the natural diet our metabolism was perfectly tuned to. Wild animals and primitive/traditional people such as the Inuit, Sami and Maasai do not have most of the obesity and chronic diseases endemic in todays modern society. ... until they adopted diets based on high production agriculture and processed foods. Milled grains have greatly increased surface area with small partical size increasing rapidity of digestion. Unfortunately, grains have also been avaible in too much abundance all the time. If you have a healthy metabolism you can tolerate a wide range of diet. But if you err in excess and loose that as I have, you need to be more restrictive. At least until you recover.
The best book I have found on guidance for a healthy diet and lifestyle is Good Energy by Casey Means, MD. She exposes the corruption of our medical system for both treatment and study driven by profit. Like Phillip Ovadia MD (Stay off my Operating Table), she embrasses a variety of diets that can bring you to the same healthy state. I was surprised to find she explained how fiber fed microbiom produces postbiotic beneficial nutrients that match the same ones prevelent in a carnivore diet. To expand on her discussion of Big Pharma influence, you can read RFK Jr's book, which sites many whistle blowers and independent investigations. To expand on her mention of some of the food producers' influence, you can read Catherine Shanahan MD's book Dark Calories.
I’m pretty particular about 90% of the time on the grains I use. I really prefer sprouted grains, organic when I can. I don’t eat a ton, but usually when I do, it’s mostly with dinner, with plenty of protein, veggies and healthy fats. It’s kind of become second nature to me. As for cheeses, pecorino is one of my faves, I prefer aged cheeses in general.
You need some ambition. Not to be content with being homeless or content with a failing grade. But you might still be thankful that there is enough oxygen in the air. (My desperate fallback)
@@ronsteward9355 totally agree. I think too many of us correlate contentment with just being done, we don’t need anything else, and I don’t think that’s true. I work hard if there’s something I want, I put a lot of research and effort into it. I think ambition and contentment go hand in hand. I think it helps you focus. And redefines what success is.
Thanks for that insightful message. When you were talking about being content, I was thinking the focus should be more on being grateful. Then you actually said be grateful. Dana Perino, in her book, Everything will be Alright, emphasised being thankful.
@@ronsteward9355 gratitude is a huge part of my life. I remind myself of that dauly. It’s one of the first things I think of now when I wake up in the morning and several times throughout the day.

Yes!!!
What is your favorite way to eat that much protein? I struggle to get enough in my day.
@@ayersws I try to get 30-40 grams per meal, like for breakfast some days I’ll eat 2 eggs, with a 1/4 cup of egg whites and a scoop of either Greek yogurt or cottage cheese or regular cheese for breakfast, with 3 chicken sausages and a bunch of veggies. Other days I’ll eat my overnight oats that have chia, hemp and flax in them with a scoop of protein powder and a protein granola I make. Lunch is either high protein leftovers or a sandwich with Ezekiel bread, organic turkey lunchmeat, cheese, maybe a slice of turkey bacon with veggies or fruit. Dinner is usually lean meat with lots of veggies. I snack on Greek yogurt bowls, chomps or archer beef sticks, handful of nuts. I make protein balls for a snack or dessert. I make roasted chickpeas or roasted edamame as croutons in salads, I swap Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, soy milk or ultrafiltered milk in my coffee (ultrafiltered, milk has twice the protein) … things like that. It’s easier than you think once you get the hang of it.
By the way, you don't need botox to look younger, look into how to make an aspirin skin peel, or you can also buy a TCA skin peel, if you can. It shouldn't cost a lot. You can erase up to 20 years from your face. But should you? I don't know.
@@TreeOfWisdom2 oh I don’t do Botox…I’ve thought about it for those lines between my eyes that make me look angry all the time 😂, but just could never bring myself to do it. I figure love me or don’t, What you see is what you get. Like I said, reminds me to take better care of myself.

You have a strong gut, I can't eat at least half of things on your list. This is why you survived, while many others succumbed.
@@TreeOfWisdom2 it took a while to get there for some of them, but I’d give it time and just go back to them. My gut was pretty messed up. I added them slowly, too, then gave it a week or so. Something I learned when one of my kids was small and had some serious food issues.
@@SimplyResilientMe I have Crohn's, that's pretty messed up and dangerous :( Eating nuts and seeds with Crohn's is like dropping a nuke into your gut.
@@TreeOfWisdom2 that’s a whole different ballgame and I feel for you. I have a friend diagnosed in her teens with it. I know everyone’s different, but she totally avoids gluten, drinks plant based milks, eats lots of fruits, veggies and beans, lean meat…. It seems really tough to navigate and took her a loooong time to figure out what caused flare-ups. Best of luck to you!
@@SimplyResilientMe If she can eat beans, she can practically eat anything. I can't eat fruits or veggies, I can only juice and cook broths. Maybe I can cheat and eat cooked, blended carrots, how that? She's doing fine, compared to me. This is why I made the comment about your gut.
@@TreeOfWisdom2 I know she said it took a long time to get to that point, but she’s had it for over 25 years. I’d have to double check with her, but I believe she did a carnivore diet for quite a while to calm her gut down, then reintroduced foods really, really slowly. And she doesn’t eat a ton of beans, but I know she loves beans in the fall.
6 years ago I had gout so bad in both feet I couldn't walk. I learned on the internet that tart cherries or juice was good for it. I am not a fan of Dr Gundry, but I was surprised by how much I agreed with his superfood list in his Vegetable Tier Ranking video. I eat all of those except okra and radishes multiple times a week. I didn't know about okra and overlooked radishes. ruclips.net/video/dJI4xkODsYw/видео.htmlsi=zL8qDdbKRN_y-AUx He rails about lectins but doesn't seem to mention oxolates and anti-nutrients.
I've read a couple of Gundry's books, and tried several different "diets". I don't agree with is whole "lectins are horrible" approach. I've discovered I do best with not restricting a lot of foods, other than ultra-processed and deep fried foods...Oddly, some gluten containing foods bother me, others don't. I do best with sprouted,, That's what I love about real food, once people find the foods or "diet" that works for them, it's amazing how good you can feel. I really hope more people discover how good the right foods can make them feel.
@SimplyResilientMe I've personally noticed that you can have quite a bit of ability to adapt to different foods. I had a problem with avacados making me sick. I really wanted the nutrition they offered. I eventually adapted so that I don't notice any ill affect from large amounts. Many times when people say "I can't eat that," I wonder if it might be a microbiome issue rather than a permanent condition.
@@ronsteward9355 honestly, based on my research, I think that's probably true to an extent. Gut disbiosis is real and pretty common based on the standard american diet, and if you don't have the microbes necessary to process some foods, they're going to give you problems intially. That said, food intolerance is real, for several foods, so I hope people take the time to figure out what foods work for them and which don't.
That is a very good list. I used to eat almost all of those before I went keto. But, not soy and seldom found purple potatoes. I regularly took a shot of cherry juice concentrate. Now I am on a pretty short list.

Anyone declaring that "it is what it is" has a specific meaning is devoid of imagination. This monologue has nothing to do with that mean-anything, mean-nothing phrase. It's something to vibrate the vocal cords when unable to think of something meaningful. It's easier to say than "these are the circumstances that we either decide to accept as is, or work to alter" as if expressing a preference for either side could be taken badly. So we stick to neutral and hope the recipient takes it well, and doesn't call out the speaker to explain. It's like the Spanish "es lo que hay". It's like 'that's how it is', or 'that's what's available". (Implied: take it or leave it) The words themselves have meaning but these flexible phrases can mean almost anything. And so... they fill in the silence. It is what it is. 😂
I think it means exactly what it says.....and it's a lot shorter than having "these are the circumstances that we either decide to accept as is, or work to alter" tattooed on my arm"🤣 I both choose to accept them as is, because I have no choice, and work to alter them in the future to the extent I can. I think it does have a specific meaning, but it's a specific meaning that's open to interpretation....if that makes sense. I never really thought a lot about the interpretation of it, I knew what I meant by it, until I got the tattoo....The deep discussions this tattoo has sparked both surprise and entertain me. It's got a specific meaning to a lot more people than you'd think.
@@SimplyResilientMe I get the feeling of what you're saying. But it's hard to logically argue that the phrase has a specific meaning yet can be interpreted differently - unless simultaneously postulating that any interpretation other than that specific meaning is erroneous. Which would be a logical opinion, but not fact, as long as there's anyone else who assigns it a different specific meaning. For some of us, the meaning is fluid and context-dependent. In other words, we don't assign it a specific meaning because we are aware that the meaning we intend if we speak it or the meaning we perceive if we hear it depends entirely on the situation at hand and the surrounding conversation. It's not often found in serious conversation. Sometimes we use it to poke fun, or to make light of a situation. The beauty of keeping the phrase present is that it can bring to your mind whatever meaning you find helpful at the moment. Health problems weigh particularly heavy on the scale of impact, and positivity in thought and action have a beneficial effect.
I agree that the meaning is fluid and context dependent and I agree that it can bring to mind whatever one finds helpful at the moment. but I disagree that it's not often found in serious conversation. All the said, you're kinda proving my point... people fall into one camp or another, it's all about perspective, and it sparks some interesting conversations, which I love. i think its one of the reasons its my favorite tattoo, not just for the meaning I attribute to it, but because of the conversations I've had because of it. So for that, thank you. I enjoy the back and forth.
@@SimplyResilientMe Oh, I never disagreed with you about people falling into "camps". It's how we've been coaxed to act. There's "us" and there's "them". On pretty much any concern. And it's never been more prominent than now with the two main political parties. People may have only one main issue that they feel really concerned about but they're going to align with the party that seems to view that issue similarly. The other ones are bad and that's all there is to it; I don't want to hear how they're better on other issues. But I mean pick any topic and there's people with opposite viewpoints, both sure theirs is right and the other wrong. Give and take is rare.
@@elgringoec agreed.
Man ! That is some WET water! It is what it is! 😂 ❤
🤣
You can say that only when you've done what you can to make sure it isn't that again. Sure, the past can't be changed, and must be accepted, but you should always analyze what you could have done and change your method of operation in the future.
I agree. But sometimes whatever it is would happen no matter what we do, and all we can do is accept it and make the best of it. The key, in my opinion, is making the best of it.
Speaking from experience, while it is good to analyze how to ensure it never happens again, sometimes it leads to overthinking every little thing you do to prevent it. That can cause a lot more paranoia or anxiety about the situation as a whole. Saying “it is what it is” can help to get you off that path of overanalyzing.
Great context. Not avoidance, not denial, not defeat, just acceptance from a strong stance by choice.
Similarly:"It is what it is", for me, is acceptance! Acceptance is not apathy, unless you are apathetic, it is a marker of what is now and how you got here, the trials and obstacles. It is said and done without judgement and it comes with a will or openess to try and see the things we could and more improtantly what we could NOT control that brought us to this point. It facilitates the not hating ourselves or others for 'it'. its a chance. "It is what it is", is not, "what it will be" or "always be" that is apathy. "it is what it is", is a marking, a nod to, a pointing at, and if you want it to be, a starting of the next "what can be" within our own control with the caveat that things will come that sit outside of us, "it is what it is" reminds us we are connected, but also strong enough or even stubborn enough to carry on living a full life. Thankyou for a great vid and a chance to share.

You have helped me think that through. My brother uses the statement often. I don't like it...be because it sounds like one is giving up, giving in, nothing i can do. Such different interpretation though. You helped me see there is another thought process to see. I am with you. "It" may be, but recognize the situation and do something... Be Positive! Thanks for helping me learn the different interpretations. 👍 🌺
@@deborahlanyi5535 glad you’re open to looking at it a different way!
Food is medicine!!!!! I'm so not tempted by crap at all because I know what the cost is. Thanks for sharing not just what your effects were but why!!!!! As usual, awesome info! Love ya!! - Angi
Totally agree! Thanks, Angi!!!💕
Gosh, I have been doing the exact same thing the last week. I have been eating things w/sugar, processed, well, things I know I DEFINITELY should not. Thanks... you have explained so much. I WILL get back on my healthy diet.
Maybe it's the weather! It's been so hot and sticky here in the midwest, my motivation went out the window....I had to force my way back to it..
@@SimplyResilientMe I have to admit, a week ago I finished 16rounds of chemo and found myself 'thinking less' about my eating. I'm not making excuses, really. I guess we both need to get back to the 'good stuff' 🤗
@@deborahlanyi5535 Congrats on finishing chemo!!!! After 16 rounds, you have to be exhausted and out of energy, totally understandable. I hope you're feeling better soon and getting your energy back. I truly hope you're through the hard part now. huge hugs to you.
Nice job my friend. I believe this 100%
@@dianegreen4800 thanks, chica!!
Thank you for that very good discussion. Your summary of cholesterol, fats and statins is exactly right. I can use this video as a concise reference for others to understand my position on diet and cholesterol.
