    Cry much? I have this same laser for 2 years now and even then it didn't specify what the focal length was nor does it now. It does come stock with a 2.5" lens and the AF pen is adjustable but the tip of it will have to be below the cone or you will crash your cone into the bed. Get your mirrors and lenses from American Photonics. you can even get 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 4" focal length lenses.

    All cheap Chinese Lasers companies are in the same boat - 'False Advertising', poor 'Quality', and little to no 'Customer Service'. You do truly get what you pay for. With that said though, for anyone with time, patience, some tinkering skills / abilities, and knowing where to / how to shop - you can end up with an awesome machine (equivalent to or better than a more expensive 'Name Brand' and made to your needs) for less money.

    Hi You are not the first to encounter this OMtech issue with lenses. However, when I look at your lens tube and nozzle image I see that there is a 1/2" spacer added to the bottom of your lens tube. If you unscrew this spacer you will be left with a lens holder that takes a 20mm diameter 2" lens and will almost be in focus at about 7mm below your nozzle.. However you must lift the red sensor up by 1/2" also. . This will not be perfect focus, but I will add a video that explains how to set your auto focus to diffent focal length lenses. At twice the price, I concurr that ThunderLaser is superb machine, but it does nothing different to the OMTech and although the TL customer support is at a different level they will still not teach you to use your machine. I am afraid that is something that only mistakes and experience will teach you. Please dont take that as criticisn, I am not trying to humiliate a new user because I have been in you position a few years ago. No matter how expensive the machine this is not a technology where the machine instantly makes you an expert. That was attempted with the one button Glowforge Hmmm. The good news is that you have a lot of free lenses. the bad news is that the brown PVD Chinese lenses have a max rating of 80 watts. The good news is that OMtech promised you a 100 watt tube. The bad news is that it is probely only an 80 watt tube that has been factory TESTED to 100 watts but you cannot run it at 100 watts, Normal running will be at 80 watts.. Find out the tube brand and look at the website to see what you have. Here is the video to watch regarding setting the autofocus sensor. ruclips.net/video/FPBxKUrMV-c/видео.html As a new user, can I recommend you pop across to this video series to get up to speed quickly. laseruser.com/the-concise-rdworks-learning-lab-menu/ Welcome to a large community and sincere best wishes for you new journey.

    For success of your business, I would take some time to learn focal lengths and there different uses. The different lengths can make certain jobs easier and extend the life of your laser. I don’t think OMTech is to blame or yourself. It’s just a learning thing. The great thing is the ability to bounce things off of others with some experience. I would also get some calipers so you can really dial in you focal length. The piece that comes with the Mach is not accurate. That’s why ramp test are important. Do a ramp test and make your own measuring tool. Good luck!

    • @StingerLaserWorks
      @StingerLaserWorks Год назад

      I have learned a lot about focal lengths in the past week. I started with a co2 in late december. I do use calipers and run ramp tests. My blame on Omtech is advertising my machine as coming with a 2" focal but sending a 2.5" focal. It really blew my mind as a new user but I have figured it out now. I have the 4pc APC lens set on the way to continue my knowledge and grow my capabilities. Thanks for the comment.

      Not possible with auto focus. Focal rod depresses 5mm to activate. Focus from nozzle tip with a 2" lens is 5mm. The focal rod will still touch material when focused. Omtech tech support has verified. Thanks for trying to help.

      @@StingerLaserWorksit is possible. Your autofocus can be recalibrated and adjusted in the controller. You do a ramp test. Measure with calipers and input values in the controller.

    Hi Chris Ad others have commented, you have a bit to learn about lenses. The sunflower yellow lens is CVD materila rated at 150 to200 watts The honey coloured lens is cheaper Chinese PVD material but rated to 80 watts. Optically they will perform the same but if your machine is truly a 100 watt machine (which I doubt, my guess it's an 80 watt B grade tube) then you have cause to complain about the QUALITY of the lens they sent. The gap betwen nozzle and work at present (about 19mm) confirms what others have state, yes this is set for a 63.5 (2.5") focal length lens. The new lens is what it says on the box, a 2" (50.8mm) focal length lens. The problem with "auto focus" is that it has ZERO intelligence and will never be able to detect if you change the lens to a new focal distance. So there is no point complaining to OMTerch. because you know the new focal distance from the ramp test (about 6mm) measure it and note the dimension and then learn how to reset your auto focus pen to suit a different focal distance Here is a video that explains it in detail. ruclips.net/video/IDaGEu0ddrE/видео.html. Good luck.....OMTech have achieved their goal and sold you a machine but as you see, their support will be limited. Your future enjoyment of this machine is now all down to how much you are prepared to learn about this laser technology . 10% will "get you through" for ever but learn more to enjoy more ps . The 2" lens is the "jack of all trades" lens fitted to nearly all machines so there is nothing wrong with such a lens. How and why you would want longer and shorter focal lengths is all part of that zone beyond 10% pps As a new user you may benefit from this A to Z of laser video series laseruser.com/the-concise-rdworks-learning-lab-menu/

  • @jamesalexander5388

    According to your ramp test, your stock lens is a 2 1/2” focal length lens, while the two lenses you got from OMTech are 2” lenses. By now, I am sure you will recognize that you have to do a new test for each lens you use. If you had, you would have had the correct focus on the first lens…

    • @StingerLaserWorks
      @StingerLaserWorks Год назад

      Yep. Also if Omtech didn’t sale and advertise my machine as coming with a 2” lens then send me a machine with a 2.5” lens I probably wouldn’t have been so confused. But now I know that having a 2” lens in my machine it is impossible to use autofocus without buying a short cone from another company (cloud ray) since Omtech does not offer the short cone to make it work as advertised.

    Hi Auto focus is the most confusing thing to have on a laser machine because it does not contain a single brain cell so it does exactly what it's been told to do. It thinks it has focused the lens but is has no idea that you have change the lens focal distance.. I see tjat you have a C series lens tube and I know that this particular lens tube is designed to take a 2" (50.8mm) and when you place the NO3 nozzle onto the lens tube the focal point is designed to be about 5 or 6mm belo the end of the nozzle. 1) Do not worry about the lens colour. The bright yellow ones are better quality USA CVD lenses . By better quality I mean there is no optical performance difference but the brown lens is rated up to 80 watts and the yellow ones are rate to about 200 watts. 2) If you place the brown and yellow lenses side by side belly side up and look at your face in the lens it will be distorted and you may see that your head is a diffent size in each lens. In particular open your mouth wide and compare the sizes. The bigger your mouth the flatter the curved surface and thus the longer the focal length of the lens. 3) I can be certain that the brown lens is not the standa 2" (50.8mm) focal length lens the factory fits to most machines. Put your nozzle onto the lens tube and press auto focus. Now measure the gap between nozzle and material and I anticipate it will be close to 19mm. This indicates that you have a 2.5" (63.5mm) brown lens. Its weird because the reflection form the two yellow lenses look different. Can you do the side by side test with them ot check the surface curvature. It's almost as if the yellow lens you have not tested is the same as the brown lens. However there is just one simple test you can perform to find out crudely where your focal point is and thus detemine the focal distance of the lens. There are only limited focal lenght lenses availabler for these machines 1.5" (38.1mm), 2" (50.8mm). 2.5" (63.5mm) 3" (76.2mm) and 4" (101.6mm) I think your brown one is 2.5" and I think your yellow one (the one you tested) is a 2" lens. Here is the VERY simple test to check which of those 5 focal distances your lenses are. Without thr nozzle raise the table to its top position. Drop your lense tube until its about 1" clear of the table . Now drop the table about 3" and put a piece of card on the table. Press the pulse button quickly to mark the card. (it will be big) Look at the keypad and raise the table by about 10mm. move the card and repeat. Keep doing this and the burn will get smaller and smaller. At a certain point the beam will start getting bigger again. Now do fine adjustment of the table height to find the position where you can burn the smallest spot. Measure the gap between card and end of lens tube. (say 40mm). Remove the lens tube and measure how far the face of the lens is up inside the lens tube(say 11mm). Add 40 +11 = 51mm and find how close this dimension is to one of the standard focal lengths.....The 2" (50.8mm) You only need to measure within a mm or two because the match will be obvious. OK so your new lens is different. What now? Well, you will have to learn to reset your focus switch. . Watch this video and hopefully it will explain how to do it. You will also maybe see why I have junked my auto focus because it's nothing but a pain. I always use a simple step gauge because its quicker ruclips.net/video/IDaGEu0ddrE/видео.html If you want to make your own step gauges I can supply the DXF file. Thanks for the info. I did test both new lenses and got identical results. I prefer the ramp test method for finding the correct focal distance. After doing so it showed a focal distance of 5.6mm from nozzle tip vs the 18mm for my 2” stock lens. After Omtech reviewed the results from the ramp test they sent out 2 new lenses. I will test them soon and post a video of the results.
