Welcome to GARDENING IN COLD SPRING HARBOR, a channel where I Lyuba Franco, a home gardener living in Long Island, NY( gardening zone 7a) tackle all of the struggles, teach you simple tricks/hacks as well as give you all the easy, helpful yet proven tips so you can have the home garden of your dreams!!! I am a stay at home mother to 5 beautiful children (whom you will see periodically in my gardening videos), a loving wife of over 13 years and also a passionate home gardener. It all started with my birth mother who worked at a field/plantation, followed by my grandmother who I was lucky to know until she passed away at 93 years old. As long as I can remember, she used to take me to my parents Summer house in Ukraine and taught me all the gardening techniques and tricks that I still use in my own home garden today.Thank you for visiting my channel and for watching my videos! Wow! That is such a great selection. I think I know the answer to this but….have you ever tried Dollar Tree seeds?
Hello and thank you for watching my video. No, as shocking as it may sound I haven't tried Dollar Tree seeds. How is the selection and most importantly how is the germination rate? Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
@ the selection, as expected, is nothing like the selection you showed at Walmart. Those that use them seem happy with them but I suppose one would have to do a comparison. I guess it is best to stick with what works for you!
😊 Great video, I'm so excited to start growing!

Where do you live? My stores do t start putting seeds around Late March
@@heidyshomestead Hello and thank you for watching my video. I live in Long Island NY. This LOWES is located in Farmingdale, NY. March sounds late where are you located? Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
@ I live in Ohio no seeds yet. I’ve been seeing people going to their lowes and home depot and theirs are stocked up. Not mine yet
Thank you! This is the most helpful and easiest to understand explanation of when to plant I have seen. I’ve saved it to watch again and again because I’m in zone 6a so I have a couple months to wait :)
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im glad to hear that you found the content of this video to be useful. For us this year ( zone 7a) the last anticipated frost date is in late April. I cant start sowing any cold weather crops until last week of March/first week of April. Warm weather crops I wont be able to sow/transplant until late June. Right now I started to organize my seed packets and looking to see what I have vs what I want to grow this year. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Wow! What a great explanation of the different seed types! Thank you!

I got a Massive Variegated Peace Lilly, Fiddle Leaf, and a Snake Plant for $14.99 each. Stunning!! And did i mention HUGE?!! Run! 🏃♀️ 🏃♀️
Lyuba, greetings lovely lady. I'm sure I've said it before, but I soooo love your passion and enthusiasm! Definitely a breath of fresh air in these cold winter months. Thanks for the wonderful reminders in this video, as I am definitely itching to get back out there in my garden. I have been monitoring the three cold hardy fig trees I planted last summer after watching your video on figs last year and the buds seem to be doing all right in their outdoor permanent location. I mulched them heavily as you suggested and am anticipating seeing any new spring growth. I left last years Swiss chard root stalks as I am curious to see if they re-sprout and give me an early start as some of my cole crops and garlic have done in the past. I'm planning a spring update on my own gardening efforts and will let you know when I do so you can see any progress on what you have inspired for me. I'm also getting ready to begin my indoor seed starting which I often do right after ground hog day, regardless of what ol' Punxatawney Phil says. Lots of love sent your way dear. 🙂
Hello my fellow home gardener and thank you for watching my video. Wow, you're a dedicated gardener! I'm excited to hear about your spring update. Fig trees are pretty cold hardy and if you didn't see any issues for months after planting they should be fine to withstand winter months. Last year I seem to have missed some garlic heads in my garden beds ( I think the kids must have tried to harvest but ripped off the foliage instead leaving the actual heads below soil surface) and next growing season they started to grow back for me. I hope that your Swiss chard will re grow for you! Please keep me updated. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
@@lyubafranco I harvested all my garlic with a garden fork, putting it under the bulbs then pulling them up and I guess that some little side cloves must have broken off and remained. They began re-sprouting last fall and there are now 2-3 dozen of them (I had over 100 plants). One of the things I love about gardening is that there is always more to learn. 🙂

Thank you for sharing! ❤ We just got snow yesterday in Prescott, Arizona, and it's still with us. We didn't get any snow at all last year. It's the first year that we didn't get any snow at all since we've been here. I'm curious how long our current snow will last. May you walk in beauty ❣️
Hello my fellow home gardener and thank you for watching my video. Wow, snow in Arizona?!!! Im shocked as Arizona is known for its super hot temperatures. It hasnt snowed for over a week here but because of the below freeing temps last week not much melted. This year our anticipated last frost date is at the end of April. Looks like I wont be able to plant my warm weather crops out until May/beginning of June. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
@lyubafranco We're in the mountains at approximately 4,600 ft. That's why we moved here from Phoenix. Phoenix keeps getting hotter and hotter year after year. When I first moved to Phoenix, the summers were up to 110°F. When the summers kept getting to 120° F we said, "Screw this!" and moved to Prescott. It's so much nicer here.

Hello and thank you for watching my video. I very pleased to hear that you have found the content of my video to be helpful and useful. Your subscription to my gardening channel is sincerely appreciated! Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Hi Lyuba! I have been watching you for a while now. I love your passion and enthusiasm! There are so many plant channels, but your level of detail and explanation will be helpful for the newbies. When I first started, I needed someone to show me how to prune leaves and diagnose problems. For example, that Dracaena Fragrans (corn plant) you got on clearance is lovely...most advice online is that they want their soil moist. But a lot of us who have followed that advice have struggled with yellow leaves. REAL plant owners with thriving, healthy ones say they let them dry out. Most of us don't have sunshine beating down on our plants and don't need to be watered as much as the blogs and articles say. New plant parents need as much detail as possible, so I love the way you explain things. I look forward to more videos :)
Hello, thank you very much for watching my videos and for all of the kind, positive feedback. Its loyal viewers like you that keep me motivated. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Thank you for the information because i was not aware that you can keep the plant. my question is when do you start the dormancy period?
Hello and thank you for watching my video. You should place a poinsettia into dormancy when it has lost about half of its leaves and bracts and the flower bracts have faded. This is usually in January through March. Remember to keep it in a cool , dark location where temps are 60 degrees F. Pull it out of dormancy sometimes in early May when new growth starts to emerge. Treat it as you would any other houseplant. If youll want to keep it outside during Summer months, please place it in a partially shaded area. In the beginning of October, start the process of getting the plant to rebloom for Christmas by putting it in complete darkness for 15 hours a day for two months ( 8 weeks). Hope that I was able to help. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Im on the hunt for a Green Anthurium, I received that flower in a bouquet once but haven't been able to find them in the big box store as of recent. Thanks for the vid!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. I have seen green anthuriums as part of flower arrangements as well but not sold as a houseplant in garden centers. I'll keep my eye out and if'll I see one especially sold online I'll let you know. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!

Should a orchid be repotted while in bloom?
Hello and thank you for watching my video. No, you shouldn't repot any houseplants while they are putting on flower buds or are in bloom. Re-potting causes stress ( transplant shock) hence you're risking losing the flower blooms/flower buds. Please wait until your orchid is fully done blooming, spent blooms fall off and the flower spike starts to die off. Hope that I was able to answer your question. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
So interesting! You have so much knowledge. Thanks for sharing.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. I sincerely appreciate your positive feedback. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Im in SA(Limpopo province)and i want to grow bay tree where can i find the seeds
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Bay laurel is typically propagated and grown from cuttings or garden center transplants. You could grow bay laurel from seed but it can take as long as 10 years to reach maturity and produce leaves.Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Zone 10b here! such a lovely vid, love the when and how as im new to the garden.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Your positive feedback is truly appreciated. You live in a warm climate region. Do you grow citrus directly in the ground or also in a container? Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
I use it all the time here (Australia south east - mainland, nobody talks about Tasmania 😂) because the soil is acidic and a lot of native plants here don't like nitrogen. If there are bits of charcoal it it, that's also good for microbes etc. Happy gardening.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im glad to hear that you use wood ash in your home garden. Now, during the winter season since we're burning the fireplace more often ( almost daily) I'm actually saving fresh ash to add to my garden this Spring. With freezing air temps outside it's hard to believe that new gardening season is right around the corner but before we know it, once again it'll be time to sow, plant and harvest.Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
This was the most aggressive and by far the BEST orchid video I have ever seen! Thank you! I have a phalaenopsis orchid that has been doing BEAUTIFULLY since last March with constant blooms and multiple new flower spikes etc. I was planning to repot it this spring once it stopped blooming but unfortunately we were away for 6 weeks and it did not do well. For one thing we had the temp turned down to a constant 14C but also it was too moist (I didn’t give specific enough instructions so as not to overburden the person coming by our house to water plants etc). It was soaking in water in its pot and has quite bad root rot. It currently has three flower spikes. One is clearly entirely dead, the second one is brown on the bottom and the flowers in bloom are drooping, and the third one is still green with tiny buds but I don’t know if it will bloom. My plan was to repot and cut the first two flower spikes, but I’m wondering if I should just cut all three? I’ll try and upload some photos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I can’t seem to add photos. Also, the second leaf from the bottom is yellow near the stalk but only about 1/4 of the leaf is yellow. Should I cut it off? The other leaves are all green
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im sorry to hear that your beautiful orchis is not doing well. How many days has it been since it was last watered? How dry is the growing medium now? In regards to the dead flower spike, I would cut it off completely to the base. I would leave the other 2 spikes alone for now. The flower buds have to go through a growing phase of 2-3 months before opening up and blooming. If you're saying that the buds on the remaining spike are still small there is still a very good chance that they will continue to grow and will eventually bloom. Try your best not to put the plant through anymore shock/stress as anymore drastic changes can lead to the death of the last flower spike. I also like to mist my orchids daily to help improve humidity levels. I would wait until the last spike completes its blooming cycle before repotting. You will need a special container with lots of aerial holes ( I get mine in Lowes/Home Depot for roughly $4; they are plastic, clear and have large aerial holes throughout) and an orchid potting medium ( I prefer using bark vs sphagnum moss). Hope I was able to help. Please let me know if you have anymore questions. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Thanks! It was sitting in stagnant water for an unknown length of time (possibly weeks). It has extensive root rot. I took it out of the stagnant water and let it drain one week ago and haven’t watered it since. It is in a good pot with bark and drainage holes but that pot was left inside the ceramic pot when it was watered (while we were away for 5 weeks). I bought new bark medium and a new slightly larger pot - it has quite a few aerial roots above the pot right now. Given that it has significant root rot would you recommend repotting right away and remove the rot, or leaving it and seeing if proper care takes care of the issue? Will the rot spread if not removed?
@@sarahscott514 Root rot can indeed spread in orchids. It is important to remove and dispose of severely infected roots to prevent further spread.
Thank you so much! You’ve really empowered me to give it a go. I’m grateful!
These are all so beautiful!
