ABOUT THE PLAY: King Richard II is corrupted by his inner circle; lavish living has depleted his funds. Upon opening of the play, we find out that Richard's uncle, the Duke of Gloucester, has been murdered. Henry Bolingbroke accuses Thomas Mowbray of the Duke's murder, and a date for their trial by combat is appointed. Their duel is suddenly interrupted by King Richard; he banishes Bolingbroke and Mowbray from England. With his cousin Bolingbroke out of the picture, Richard usurps the estate of his late uncle, John of Gaunt.
