This video is a little late as we are definitely past the midpoint of the year. This is due to my personal life being crazy with work being more demanding and my wife and I had a baby a couple of months ago. So RUclips has taken a back seat in my life, as I have little free time. BUT I love making videos and interacting with the BookTube community, so here is a video albeit a bit late. I was ta...

Dark Force Rising: Spoiler-Free & Spoiler Book Review // Dig It Or Bury It? // Diggerdan Reads
Thank you for the shoutout. I hope you enjoy reading Star Trek books. And I absolutely love those covers for the “People of the” series and that old-school “Game of Thrones” cover. And I also lived in Michigan for a time (age 1-8).
Absolutely! I remember watching Next Generation with my dad growing up, so I'm excited to dig back into Star Trek. I agree! They are so cool. I think it is way more interesting than a generic sword with a blue background That's cool, I didn't know that!
Didn’t I preorder a book for you last year that was signed?🤔 so you actually have 3 signed books!
You most definitely did! I forgot about that when I filmed this. You got me Murtagh that was signed by Paolini. Good catch!
If you have a book problem then I apparently do too! Great haul Daniel! Always happy to be an enabler to your book addiction!😘
Haha I know its hard to say no to books. Thank you! And thank you again for feeding my addiction haha
Yay a new Dan Video, Missed ya mate! Thanks for the kind words :) Definitely we will do something together for Empire of Silence, it looks so good! I just have to find my copy, which I can't seem to find right now. You bloody fantasy readers, Children of time is "only 600 pages, not that big" wow haha. I'm pretty interested in Mercy of Gods, I am about 5 books into the Expanse, I'll probably pick it up when it comes out in smaller paperback form probably. I haven't read Foundation yet either, for some reason I decided to read all his Robot books first, I got sucked into some "Best order to read all of Asimov" list ha Garth Nix was one of my companions in the school library in high school, I would sit in the bean bags and read, I think almost every one of his books they had there, I loved the keys to the kingdom stuff, and the Abhorsen series was probably my favourite books for a long time. God the cover of Daughters War is fantastic, I absolutely fell in love with Between Two Fires, it's the book that convinced me to try Fantasy again. I need to get to Blacktounge thief and Daughters War
It feels good to get one out! Of course my friend! It's okay it just gives me more time to catch up on other stuff haha Hahaha yeah my view of length may be a bit skewed. But I promise you, once you finish WoT you won't really be afraid of the length of a book ever again. I didn't realize he's Australian as well! So that's cool. I feel everyone else on my shelves are either American or British. It really is a nice cover. Now I'm debating if I read Daughter's or Thief first...
Plenty there to keep you out of mischief. Happy reading.
There is so much! Cheers!
"All your books are mismatched, anyway" the shade from your brother haha I feel like having mismatched copies of a series can be kinda cool, though. Sorta tells a history of the books and how they were marketed. I managed to find super clean hardback copies of Brisingr and Inheritance for $3 each the other week so I'm on the hunt for Eragon and Eldest now. The battle where they're fighting against the army of people who can't feel pain hasn't left my head in the past 15 years so I'm down to give the series another try. I've thrifted signed copies of books TWICE by accident and it's always a fun surprise. One I didn't realize until I got home and flipped through it. The other I ordered online through a thrift books site and when it arrived it had a "1st edition signed copy" sticker on it. I flipped when I saw it, I will treasure that book forever.
Also, congrats on 500 subscribers! 🎉
Hahaha yeah I really don't mind having mismatched books anymore. It used to bother me and would get jealous of other people on Booktube that have immaculate shelves and first edition copies or premium everything, but I realized that its more about being able to read an awesome story over having a pretty book. That's a good price! Hopefully you can track them down! The Inheritance Cycle was the series growing up that got me into fantasy. That's awesome! That is always a cool find. Thanks Lan! 500 is huge number for me. We got there way quicker than I anticipated.
I find native American historical fiction interesting too. Can you recommend another book or series to try. Good video.
I haven't read them yet, but I've heard good things about The Leatherstocking Tales by James Fenimore Cooper. Thanks for watching!
MY DUDE. Literally have an identical rocking chair that we got when we had a kid born six months ago!!! Haha
That is insane! Especially because my wife and I thrifted it about two years ago now. Also congrats! Ironically I had my first four months ago, that's why hardly anything has been posted on my channel since than. I gotta ask, how do you find the time to consistently upload with a baby? I find any spare time goes to catching up on washing bottles, laundry and sleep haha
@@DiggerdanReads Well I only started my channel after I had a kid, so I haven’t know really anything different. At this point all my video work is done after he and the wife go down for the night and since my editing and video work is very low effort at this point that makes it easier.
@@DiggerdanReads huge congrats on the kid as well. We found that things got easier at about 4.5 months. Having a kid is the best work I’ve ever done! Hope it’s going good for you guys!
@@iSamwise Well that's fair, but I still find it impressive nonetheless! Yeah that makes sense, having low edits definitely can quicken the process. Thank you! That's great to hear, because for every night that she sleeps through most of the night its followed by multiple where she is up every couple of hours. I completely agree! I find being a Dad is the coolest and most gratifying thing I've ever done. Same to your family!
Almost didn't finish this one. Similarly to you, I was cringing at the F-bombs and some dialogue. That scene you talk about with the colors and flowers while they are with the contagion squad -- I was also waiting for it to become menacing like I think it was meant to be, but it never happened. AND I noticed the Chinese style hat after I was at the end of the book and was like -- wait -- what? The actual murder mystery elements, however, I really enjoyed! But towards the end I had to psych myself up to keep reading it. I liked the author's previous book (not immediately previous) Foundryside much better.
I'm glad I'm not alone! Yeah the lack of description to emulate an Eastern feel I think really hurt it IMO. That's good to hear, I'll have to give it a try!
Mat was still ride or die in book 1. He stole a magic dagger out of a darkfriend assassin's hand while Rand was too sick to defend himself. Book1 Mat is still an absolute bro.
That is true! That scene I think gets glossed over a bit as far as showing Mat's true character early on
Can I watch this video before I finish the series or do you talk about books past the 1st one
Hi Spencer! Sorry for taking forever in responding. We try our best to avoid spoilers past book one, but we do spoil a couple of things later in the series
Awesome that you guys are doing this series together! I'm on book 6 atm and really liking the series. Parts are definitely slow but still really enjoying the overall story and very excited to see where it goes. Heard Lord of Chaos gets crazy at the end so I'm excited!
I'm glad you're excited about the video series! I still can't believe I convinced Richard to do every book with me. Lord of Chaos is easily one of my favorites!
@@DiggerdanReads hey! Will absolutely be tuning in to every episode. Lord of Chaos ending was indeed absolutely insane! I’m now about halfway through A Crown of Swords and enjoying it so far. I’ve kinda gotten the vibe that a lot of readers think book 7 is either bad or the starting point of the series being really slow paced but so far book 7 has had a lot of cool stuff and I don’t really feel that slow pace. I even thought book 6 was slower in the middle. What’s your take on that? (With no spoilers of course) 😄
@@CvpArt I'm happy to hear it! I agree that what you said is the general feel for a lot of readers, however I disagree. Although key in mind that I never experienced "the slog" and just ripped through the books one after another. In my opinion Crown may be a touch slower than other books because of how much time is spent in Ebou Dar, but for me personally it never really dragged.
@@DiggerdanReads yeah that makes total sense. I do see how the Ebou Dar story is a bit slower than for example Rands pov chapters but I’m having a good time with Mats pov. My plan is also to try to get through the “slog” books pretty fast and keep momentum going. I’m generally a pretty slow reader and it took me like 2 months to get through Lord of Chaos, but I’ve read half of book 7 in 6 days or so so that’s pretty fast for my standards haha. Also not bad that 8-10 are some of the shorter WOT books. Heard it really picks up again in Knife of Dreams. Excited for your next episode btw! Hope it’s coming soon. 😄
@@CvpArt Hey everyone has their own pace! I think I averaged about four week a book for the first 7 or 8 and slowly got faster. Honestly what is saving me now on the reread is the audio book. Now even with very limited time I can knock out a WoT book in a week and half to two weeks max. Book three video should come in the next few weeks, I just gotta coordinate with Richard to sit down and record!
The Sword of Shannara, along with its two sequels, is one of my favorite novels. Brooks has unjustifiably taken quite a lot of flack, much of it from people who couldn't get past the superficial similarities between his book and The Lord of the Rings. Despite the fact that Brooks is not the greatest writer out there, considering how amateurish Sword is in particular, I always felt a deep and abiding appreciation for the world and characters he created. And the artwork by the Brothers Hildebrandt only adds to the novel’s sense of old-school romantic adventure.
That's great to hear! Looking back since reviewing Sword, I think of it fondly and I am looking forward to continuing the series. I agree, I could be wrong but my guess is that a majority of people (myself included) that make the similarities are people that haven't read much of Brooks. I love the world in Sword, especially with the scene of the skyscraper "skeleton" really showing the history of the world. The covers are some of my favorite from all of fantasy!
wow that's a huge drop from Children of Dune! I have a friend who loved the first 3 books, but then gave up on 4, so not surprising
I know! I'm so disappointed. Haha he is smarter than I am
Empty shelf refilled! Excellent!
Yes! Couldnt agree more. Bury it deep. I was so disappointed, every time i ssaid i liked one of the dune books i had people sayinf, just wait till you get to God Emperor its the best one, and it was just so dull. The philosphy and letos monologuing is fine, but just nothing happens in the plot for 99% kf the book. The huge time jump means that the world, universe, charecters, even concepts and belief systems, that i fell in love with from the first three books, are just conpletly gone, it may as well not be a dune book anymore. Even the "returning charecter" duncan idaho, isnt the duncan from messiah and children, because hes a gola from the corpse that died in the Harkonen attack in book 1, so hes missing all his best charecter developments and events. Ive been waiting patiently for you to review this one so i could bitch about it sith you 😅 To say a couple things that were good, Leto is written very well, as this post human conciousness that humans just cant even begin to fully comprehend, that was well done. Also the very very end is onteresting, the conclusion of the golden path is satisfying.
I had people telling me the same thing, and like I mentioned in the video, I was on such a high from Children of Dune that I think it made this book all the more disappointing. I wanted to like this book so badly, partly because I didn't want the first three books to be tainted by poor sequels, but also to prove the haters wrong. Now I have become a hater haha Yeah 99% of the book is boring thought experiments with Leto and the other 1% is the bridge scene. Yes! This is exactly why I hate giant time jumps. It makes the first three books feel so disconnected. That's true, Idaho is a completely different Idaho that we grew with. Hahaha thanks for being so patient! That is true, and is most likely why I found it so hard to connect or relate with Leto. He is definitely beyond human consciousness. Well thats the catch! When you start Heretics, you find out that the ending of this book is really just "Another beginning of The Golden Path"
I hope you enjoy the next one on your TBR more!
Thanks! I think this book set the bar pretty low, so it shouldn't be too hard to like the next one more haha
Bummer you didn’t like it!!
They can’t all be winners
Best wishes with your new born. Shame you were not so keen on the God Emperor or Dune. Careful the Dune mafia don't come for you! Happy reading.
Thank you! Haha I hope that they don’t! And if they do they won’t like my takes on the next one either
@@DiggerdanReadsI seem to of gotten away with saying God Emperor was my least favourite so far. Let's hide together from this mafia.
Very good series. You need to read them all.
That’s the plan eventually!
The only problem with watching other book tubers is it only ends up increasing the tbr. Happy reading to you!
I know it can definitely be a challenge! Same to you!
My boy, I happen to have an extra copy of GOT. You can have :) Also have to say thanks for the shoutout! It’s true that watching your videos has a lot to do with my rekindled interest for reading! Love you bro <3
That is very generous Mr. Eves! Of course bro! I find it a touch ironic because you are the one that originally made me interested in reading growing up with Eragon and Harry Potter. I distinctly remember you siting me down in our bedroom and forcing me to read the first chapter of the Sorcerer's Stone 😂 Love you too bro <3
Are you guys going to be doing this for all of the wot books?
Yes! The plan is to review every book, including New Spring!
Very nice Daniel! Looks like a good selection!
Thank you Teresa!
Hey Dan, just some tips for the Horus Heresy - The first 5 form a complete arc, after those first 5 you can skip around in the heresy books because they're mainly single stories across the war..if you don't want to do that you can skip ahead to "The Siege of Terra" sub-series which is the recently completed end of the Horus Heresy
Thanks for letting me know Talon! I've always been intimidated by Warhammer because of the sheer amount of content
@DiggerdanReads Yea it's a lot..for the Heresy the first 5 + Siege of Terra are kinda the "main story"..after that you can jump into any 40k book really
Ooo as a HUUUUGE fan of both The Martian and Project Hail Mary, I'd recommend you read The Martian first! PHM has a similar format but changes some things up in a way that is more fun after reading The Martian than before imo. His Dark Materials does have 3 books. Tried reading it in middle school but didn't get past the 1st book- think it just wasn't for me. Book thrifting is a ton of fun but it is also very "I found all of x series except book x" 😂 which makes it even more satisfying when you do find that 1 book you need to complete everything!
Okay! I think I'll have to do just that. Good to know. I feel more inclined to start a series if I have it completed or nearly so. Lol that is true! It can be very frustrating. But one of my favorite parts book thrifting is that I constantly get exposed to books/series that I wouldn't have been otherwise.
Nice haul! It makes me itchy to start buying books again.
Thanks Ed! I'm sorry! You are a stronger man than I trying to catch up with your physical TBR before you purchase more. How is that challenge going by the way? I hope you are making good progress!
@@DiggerdanReads Aaah, well, yeah, I'm a slow reader, but still not buying new stuff. Let's say I'm halfway... If I crack, I'll just blame you.
@@DutchGreyBeard hey halfway is pretty good! Haha feel free to use me as the scapegoat
The shelf is empty!! 📢📢📢 Book haul time!
Let's gooooo!!
I've read the box set of the 10 original sandman comics, looks like Endless Nights is a anthology focusing on the main characters siblings, should be safe to read I would guess, I havn't read it. But I can't suggest the boxset more. I still need to read The Martian, but Project Hail Mary is one of my top books of all time, I think the movie is like 2026 though, plenty of time. I won't give you my thoughts on Starship Troopers because you asked me not too, but know i'd typed like 3 sentences before you said that and I had to delete them. Ohh I read His Dark Materials when I was a youngster, I remember loving them, but have 0 memory of anything that happened in them, I'd forgotten they existed until this video. I could talk for hours about Warhammer Books and which to start with, The Horus Heresy takes place 10 thousand years before Warhammer 40k, but it sets the stage for how the universe ended up the way it did, and things do not change much in the 10k years between them, go put the first book on your amazon wishlist and I'll send it your way, I would love to hear what you think of it! I have read like, 30 of the Horus Heresy books, some are good, some are great, some are crap, but the first three books, starting with Horus Rising are fantastic.
Good to hear, I'll have to try out the rest of Sandman if its that highly praised. You're right, the movie is coming out in 2026. So I have more time than I was thinking. I feel like I watched one of your videos where you didn't like Starship Troopers, but I can't be certain. So I can guess what you had typed out lol That's not a good sign if you remember nothing haha. I've seen a couple people I follow say that its okay overall but nothing raving about it positive or negative. So I guess I'll let you know when I finally get around to reading them. That is incredibly generous Benjamin! I'll be sure to start it soon after I receive it and film a review. I'm excited because I've always been fascinated by Warhammer as an "outsider" and now I'll pull the certain back
LOVE seeing bingo spread to youtube! this is lovely to see. a few things though: 1) only 1 reread per card. there are a few you mention having read so unfortunately only one of those counts. the idea is to read new things (: 2) for Disability, Godkiller by Hannah Kaner is awesome. Six of Crows is also very high up there 2) Published in 2024, lots of good ones. Robert Jackson Bennet is great and just published The Tainted Cup.
I'm glad you liked the video! Don't worry many people reminded me since posting this video lol. Yeah I guessed I glossed over the reread caveat when I was reading about the rules of the bingo card. Godkiller seems good! I actually ended up reading The Tainted Cup recently! It wasn't as good as I was excepting, but I'm still glad I read it
@@DiggerdanReads I'm glad! I have that on my TBR and I CANNOT wait to read it. I read City of Stairs this year and he is def a new favorite author.
You should read The Children of Húrin by Tolkien. Quick and easy book, but so much tragedy and heartbreak. It's one of my personal favorites if you couldn't guess by my name, lol.
I'm not gonna lie, I've stayed away from Tolkien outside of The Hobbit & LotR. But I'm gonna have to give it a try! Thanks for the recommendation
I'm so excited to read book 3 and beyond now!
That's awesome and makes me so happy to hear! I'm excited to be part of your Wheel of Time journey
The irony of minute 1:14 that randland has 10 day weeks...
That is very funny, and I didn't catch that myself until I went back to edit this video. Good catch!
Enjoyed your video, Dan! Thanks
Thanks Ed! I’m happy you enjoyed it
Awesome discussion. Can’t wait for the rest. I’m 4 books in so far.
Thanks man I'm happy you enjoyed it! That is awesome to hear, you're in for the ride of a lifetime.
I think we would all agree that your new daughter takes priority over youtube videos, congratulations! Children of Dune was so good, I also went in with low expectations as I'd not heard many people talk about it, but it was brilliant. Looks like you are going to beat me to Heretics! I haven't even thought of starting that one yet.
Thanks Benjamin! I appreciate the support. Children was great! Than the quality takes a massive nosedive with book four, and I actually just finished book five last night. Heretics was better than god emperor, but still not anywhere near the quality of the first three.
@@DiggerdanReads Yeah I also didnt enjoy God Emperor much, nothing happened all book basically. I have so many books I need to get to, Heretics will make it one day haha
Thank you for saving Richard’s sanity.
I’m glad you enjoy good takes
@@DiggerdanReads 😆
Congrats on the family! Loving the WoT recap with Richard! Keep it up!
Thank you Adam! I’m glad you’re enjoying it. It’s been a blast to film with Richard
Very glad for your family. I'll hang in there for whatever you'll do next, and whenever. The Wheel of Time reviews with Richard from 2toRamble are prime content!
Thank you! I appreciate the support, you have no idea how much that means. I’m glad you think so! Filming with Richard is some of the most fun I’ve had with the channel so far
take your time on making content, man, don't feel pressured! We'll all be waiting for you! Having a newborn is crazy and awesome - hope you're hanging in there! Also - interesting you chose Children of Dune! I, myself, haven't read further than book 1, but a lot of people think that Dune Messiah is the best. CANT WAIT FOR FURY OF THE GODS!!! John Gwynne is definitely one of my favorite authors, and his Bloodsworn books have been fantastic. Highly recommend and hope you get to Gwynne at some point in the future.
Thanks Ben! I appreciate that. Yeah I was surprised by Children as well, I fully expected the first two to be better. I know I really need to start reading Gwynne this year. There’s just so much good stuff out there
Nice review Daniel!
Thanks!
Thanks for the video, the tag was fun! You let us know several times about baby's arrival beforehand so don't feel guilty about not posting! You've had a huge life change!
Thanks Lan, I appreciate the kind words and grace
Hey Daniel! Books coming out August 20th!!
Yay! Even sooner than I thought! Thanks again Teresa!
Great video! And hey pls pls pls don’t feel pressured to make videos when you literally have a newborn in the house! That’s AMAZING! We’ll all be here :)
Thank you Wera! I appreciate the kind words!
Thank you, boys. Great content!
Thank you Scott, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I love the videos! Can we watch the spoilers though? I dig the book reviews but hearing spoilers for future books makes it hard to watch while we read.
Thanks Joe! That is fair, I apologize if I ruined anything for you. I find it really hard to not go full spoilers during discussion. I promise I'll be better about avoiding things that come up in future books
Dude if I had to talk to a buddy about like stormlight, red rising, or any series I’ve read and try not to do spoilers it would be so hard! I totally understand! Hopefully my comment didn’t come off as rude!
Thanks for understanding! No not rude, but even if it was I wouldn't be upset lol Spoilers can cause a lot of emotions
I did the whole of Wheel of Time last year (it was a mammoth undertaking). I cannot wait to re-read, I really look forward to seeing the subtlety that I missed on the first run.
That's awesome! It took me about a year and a half to get through the entire series. For me so far, the reread has been even better than the first time through
@@DiggerdanReads Dude I cannot wait! The 2nd book is the one that really hooked me to the series, the Seanchan, the Horn, multiple characters stepping out of the shadows in good and bad ways. Cannot wait for the re-read
You’re so cute!!!! 😍😍😍
Thanks!
I wasn't really feeling the series after reading book 1. But my friend, who recommended the series to me, said to give book 2 a chance, and if I didn't like it, to stop. So I read book 2, and now, 8 months later, I'm on book 11.😂
Way to stick with it! I'm always happy when I hear that someone gives WoT a second chance and they end up enjoying it
Sword of Shannara is next on my list to read after I finish the Stand
It is a solid fantasy story! Great choice
