What a wonderful occasion to be celebrating your father-in-law’s 80th on a cruise as we see so many families do so with milestone birthdays. Hubby and I went with black-tie attires for the Chef’s Table but really only one other couple on the table were dressed similarly while others opted for more cocktail/ smart casual outfits to be honest, although the dress code for the dinner was formal. We’ve been on other cruises where male guests wear tuxedos and ladies in gowns but it really depends on the general demographic on your particular cruise itinerary. To avoid feeling overdressed, I’d recommend a nice blazer with shirt (tie / bow tie optional) for the gents and for the ladies, a classic and elegant dress will do - anything comfortable as there will be many courses to indulge. 😊 From memory there were 2-3 formal nights for us however this depends on the length of your itinerary. And yes, you’re right in saying guests don’t really dress up as much anymore, particularly on AU/ NZ/ South Pacific itineraries (smart casual seems to be a favourite) so eventhough there are a couple of formal nights plus a formal dress code for the Chef’s Table, guests really just tend to dress comfortably as they wish and the crew don’t strictly enforce the dress codes either. For us, we love dressing up for special occasions and don’t feel particularly out of place as long as it’s within the dress code (who knows, the guests sitting next to us in polo and jeans might feel a tad underdressed ☺️). NZ is a fantastic cruise destination so you and your family are going to have the most memorable time! We cruised NZ on Celebrity Solstice but the Ovation of the Seas ship will offer a lot more activities that your son can enjoy with you and the Mrs. My husband finds a small sling bag useful for keeping his seapass and other necessities as it takes a while to walk from one end of the ship back to our cabin so best to have everything in his little Dior bag. Hope you get to invest in a nice one soon. 😊

Yes for champagne and sparkling wine bottles so those should never be hand engraved. Still wine and liquor bottles are ok but always engrave light handedly.
