Honda Element X-WAV Review

This is a review of my wheelchair accessible 2005 Honda Element X-WAV converted by Freedom Motors USA. This is the fully converted version with a fully lowered floor on both sides of the vehicle. The new exhaust was built by Stainless Works in Chagrin Falls, OH. They have the design on file, so they should be able to make another one if you want one. @@marksimpson5199 missed an opportunity to show the union pacific M 10,000 union pacific E9 streamliners and, a honorable cameo of union pacific 844 since it was never retired and did occasionally see use on union, pacific passenger trains after 1959. There was even one or two times it briefly served as motive power for Amtrak in the early 70s in order to give the locomotive some use while it was being ferried in between excursions For union pacific. This is a very little known fact but it has been confirmed to have happened a few times in the late 70s. I found out about it on the DVD called Union Pacific 840 for the early years when it showed some footage of this. While it is a very little known fact, this would mean that Union Pacific 844 is along with southern pacific 4449 would technically be the only two steam locomotives to be used on one-way passenger trains with Amtrak as 4449 was the centerpiece of Amtrak’s very first instance of flirting with the idea of steam excursions back in February 1977, when it was being sent back to Portland Oregon after completing its tour of the American freedom train. In order to help pay for the move and to get some more publicity the organizers of the American freedom train made a special arrangement with Amtrak to pull a one-way passenger train, special deemed “ the great transcontinental, Amtrak steam excursion” and as part of the event 4449 along with a Amtrak passenger diesel in the red, white and blue stripes with the silver background, pulled a long string of Amtrak passenger cars from Florida to Oregon over the course of a few days as part of a single passenger train special. what makes the event all the more interesting is that in addition to its bicentennial American freedom, train paint, looking very appropriate, and practically lending itself to the Amtrak rollingstock behind it some of the crew of the locomotive decided to paint the word Amtrak on the tender during the event. If you ever decided to remake this video by adding details like the union pacific and maybe some more Amtrak stuff perhaps you could have the pictures with union pacific be featuring the M 10,000 the E9 streamliner diesel and union pacific 844. Additionally, perhaps a brief cameo of 4449 in the 1977 Amtrak transcontinental steam excursion could be featured showing how the word Amtrak was painted on the tender? You can find this image and further information about the event on the Internet and it’s quite interesting.

    I honestly miss my Saturn 3-door. The X-WAV was supposed to make entrance and exit easier for me, and save my shoulders from having to disassemble and reassemble my wheelchair each time I went anywhere; but I find entering and exiting the X-WAV to be more of a hassle than I ever did in my Saturn. The novelty of having the use of the ramp wore off when, after about two months, the original cable snapped and I had to replace it; then, there's the issue of having to wait for nearly over a minute for the ramp to extend, which seems like it takes longer in the rain. The X-WAV just doesn't suit my needs.

    eeeek, I just got one of these but it hasn't been delivered yet. I was really excited, but it's kind of daunting because I've been driving a VW since I had my accident in 1977 but my shoulders can't handle getting the wheelchair in and out. I live in Ohio, outside of Columbus and can't put it in my 1 car garage so it will be out in the snow all winter. Scary to hear about the rust, slippery ramp and doors not latching in the cold!

      pshanaberg Hi! What has been your experience so far? I'm considering the 2011 Element, but now I'm wondering if the issues described in this video are common, or if it could've been issues with the 2005 model, issues Freedom Motors has now learned from and corrected. Thanks.

    • @pshanaberg
      @pshanaberg 7 лет назад

      Hi! I LOVE it so far. I have not experienced these issues. I asked about them at the time (the rust issue I remember asking about?) and they were aware and said they had been fixed/improved. It's been a while since I saw this. The only issues I've had so far is that the ramp cable was too tight and the top flap wasn't dropping down like it should when it came up. That happened a couple of times and it was really annoying - fortunately it happened when they delivered it so they took it back and fixed it and it happened again when they brought it back but they fixed it on the spot and it hasn't happened since (Dec.). I also had an issue with the emergency brake - it got stuck and the E wouldn't move. Very expensive fix but Freedom Motors paid for it. The Honda dealership here was very reluctant to work on it, more specifically anything to do with the conversion which the emergency brake is but they talked to the people at Freedom Motors and fixed it right up. There's no real need for the emergency brake but it was tied into the settings for an apple car play stereo I had installed. Other than that no other issues so far, knock on wood. And I live in central Ohio so it is cold and snowy but not as cold and snowy as MI where this guy is. I felt like I was driving a house around after so many years in the VW. But it's great not to feel bullied by all the SUV's on the road anymore and I feel much safer now that I'm used to it. I'm on a Honda Element Owners facebook page and it's amazing how dedicated E owners are. I say go for it!

      @pshanaberg 7 лет назад

      PS to previous reply, after listening to this again because it had been a while, I do notice all the little things he mentions in the beginning but they don't bother me too much - although I don't notice the road/wind noise because I was used to driving a convertible that was much noisier. The gas tank is as he describes but not as bad has he made it sound - I've gotten used to it. I haven't had rust or ramp wiring problems yet but they claim those have been corrected. The previous owner was in NM so it has been well preserved.
