If you put some strong shapes over the hot mess it could come out brilliant.
Thanks Nick - I totally agree and I do exactly what you suggest in quite a lot of my videos. I always say that you should never abandon a textured gelli print..... however much of a "hot mess" it looks like when you are working on your project. I feel that there is usually an "ugly stage" you have to work through and, as you say, strong shapes over the messy base layer can usually work wonders. That you once again 😊
Thank you Joan for showing colors with their complements. Very helpful❤
Thank you, as always. I am truly thrilled that you found the video helpful. Many thanks 💕
Thank you.
Hello Clarise - you very welcome. Thank you for taking the time to watch my videos and leaving a comment 😊
Good demo, thanks.
Thank you too - glad you enjoyed the demo, much appreciate your comments 😊
What paper are you using please 😊
Hello and thanks for your question. I use copy paper a lot as it's quite "inexpensive". I favour HP color choice Paper (HP Papers CHP752 120GSM A4 Color Laser Paper, 500 sheets), I also use Yasutomo 6JM Rice Paper Sketch Pad and wet strength tissue paper. It depends what I am doing ..... but mostly use the HP Color Choice paper. Hope that helps 😊
Some interesting and beautiful papers you’ve created on this video Joan. I like how you didn’t choose to be conformist, but made some imaginative choices 😊
Hello Maria and thank you for your lovely comments, they are very much appreciated. For nearly 20 years I was (and am) very involved in the photographic world and was known for my unconventional creative digital images. I love and still love pushing the boundaries (either via gelli plate, collage or digital art) and not always following "the rules". Always go with your intuition and what makes you feel happy. If you love the results..... do more, keep experimenting, encourage others - that way we all grow in our love for all things creative. Thank you once more 😊❤️
Just WOW!! I couldn’t figure out where you were going. You totally surprised me. Amazing. 💜
LOL - to be honest I also didnt know where I was going with it too !! I feel that you have to work through the "ugly" stage and keep on going , never give up. That's what I did in this video, it reached a point where I thought "this is going badly wrong" but I persevered and was happy with the final results. Thank you for your lovely comments, they are much appreciated 😊
Merci beaucoup 🌸🌸🌸
Je suis tellement heureuse que tu aies apprécié la vidéo 🌹🌹🌹

You're more than welcome Susie 😊
Thanks for wonderful tutorials Joan. Can you recommend a Butterfly stencil?
Hello Susie, thank you for the lovely comment, I really appreciate it. Regarding a butterfly stencil, I don't think I have any butterfly stencils so I can't give you any recommendations, sorry. However, if I do come across one I will definitely get back to you with a recommendation. Thank you once again.😊
Wow! I've watched so many gelli print videos and NO ONE has every explained this. I was getting really frustrated--- now I can move forward with more confidence. Thank you so much!
Hello Christie and thank you. I am thrilled that you have enjoyed this video and I really helps you to produce some lovely textures. I have so many videos dedicated to Gelli printing, I hope you will enjoy those too. Thank you once again, I am really grateful for your kind words 😊
When you say you created the image of the woman digitally, please can you tell me what you mean, and how? Thank you, Diane.
Hello Diane, and thanks for the question. I am a self taught photographer/digital artist who uses images (usually portraits) as a basis for my digital art projects. I use Photoshop and Procreate to manipulate the images. To enable me to produce a more "complex" piece via Photoshop (or indeed Procreate), I create lots and lots of layers, thus building up the image. Each layer will be a specific item - like the eyes, hair, lips, background embellishments etc and they build into the final image. Each layer can be manipulated until I am happy with that aspect and then I move onto another part of the portrait, or whatever it is I am working on.When using Photoshop I use a Wacom tablet and pen to enable me to digitally paint - it's just like painting conventionally... but without the mess, LOL. . When I use Procreate on my iPad I use a touch sensitive Apple Pen. Here is a short video I made last December using Procreate - not a portrait this time, more a Christmasy/Winter Themed image - a little boy with a snowman. Thank you once again ruclips.net/video/PN3-5CoVnxg/видео.html
Nice day, I didn't understand the other name of liquid that water, please ? Thanks [Tanee of south of France] I suscribe willingly !
Hello and thank you. The liquid I used first is as follows :- CLARK'S Chopping Board Oil - a Chopping Board Conditioner, it's a food safe mineral oil. Here is the Amazon link (it's the U.K. site but I am sure you will find it on the French version) . Hope that helps? PS. I was in Juan Les Pins in June, really loved the town. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B078SL668G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
So complex and beautiful.
Awww thank you so much Liz, that's very kind 😀
Papers are lovely colors ..had to stop listening but watched ..Thanks 😍
Thank you so much for watching the video - I really appreciate it. 😊
Thankyou so much for this 🥰 ..I now know its the different paint as to whether I like a print I pull or not apart from the happy accidents 🤔😁always put the opaque down first (my new rule ) 🤗
Awww that's very kind thank you. I hope the video was helpful to you but in all things in the Gelli Plate world not everything always turns out the way you think (or hope) it should......... that's the exciting/frustrating part. Thank you once more 😊
Loved your papers Joan. Very nice effect!!!!!
Thank you Arianna - I promised I would upload the step by step tutorial today. 😊
To see those lovely ladies appear was absolutely magical, thank you for sharing, very inspiring ❤
Aww thank you so much, that's very kind. I've created a few images featuring those "lady shapes" and I am always happy with the results. I am so pleased you enjoyed the video - thank you once again 😊
Very nice tag. Joan!! It makes a cute little gift for friends.😊😊😊
Thank you. I made this video months ago and have been reluctant to post it, hopefully other will enjoy it too. Thank you once again 😊
Love these color combinations
Thank you so much, really appreciate your very kind comments 😊
Love the stencil of oval, can you tell me its name and where you bought it?
Thank you, regarding the stencil. Here is the info I bought it from a company in the U.K. called Clarity Crafts - the stencil is called LEONIE'S CIRCLE EDGES ABSTRACT ART 7" X 7" FRAMELESS STENCIL STE-LE-00509-77 Claritystamp £5.99
Love them all, hard to decide. Your colors are great. And nice designs. Looking forward to seeing more. Just found you here today so subscribed to see more of your work in the future.
oooooo thank you, welcome!! It's so lovely to have you part of my creative journey. I hope you enjoy the videos that I have uploaded thus far. More to come ....... scheduled until the end of the year 😊
What is the liquid in the bottle at beginning you used. If not Baby oil? When will this be revealed? Love the patterns here. Yes please explain with voice.
Hi - thanks for the lovely comments. The liquid used at the beginning isn't baby oil and the video giving more details (step by step with voice over) will go live on Sunday 8th September..... when all will be revealed . Hope you catch it 😊
That’s a very interesting collage, I like it a lot. It mirrors your beautiful artwork Joan 😊
Oh, thank you Maria, I really am grateful for your comments they mean a lot to me. I love collage and really enjoy the time I spend putting them together. Lots more to come and I hope you continue to enjoy them. Thank you once again 😊
A beautiful soft collection of prints, the tri- coloured one was my favourite one. I see you’ve started to use other brands of paint, not the ones from the range would do they perform better? I have a mix of brands too. 😊
Thank you so much Maria, I love soft pastel colours too, so I enjoyed putting this selection of textured papers together. The paints I am using in the video are tubes that I have had hanging around for a few years now..... though it was about time I put them to use !! Some paints are better than others - I have found that even some cheaper brands perform just as well as their more expensive cousins LOL. Thank you once more 😊
What a neat idea. I love how it turned out. I never thought of cutting my gelli's into strips like that. Very nice. Thank you!
Awww thank you so much. I love to share my ideas and hope that you have a go with your own gelli plate textured paper strips - I'd love to see what you do. Thank you once more ❤️
Those "rejected" papers turned in a beautiful collage Joan. Loved the final work. Haven't used napkins. Something to consider!!!
Thank you - just goes to show that even "stuff" you're not too keen on could turn into something more pleasing. Napkins are ace, I use them quite often. Thanks again x
Did you put baby on on the plate first? I really wish you would explain what you are doing or put more details in your description.
Thanks for your question. I have already made a much longer video that has a voice over that explains in detail what I did and what products I used (it wasn't baby oil BTW) . That video is scheduled to play on the 8th September when all will be revealed. Thanks once again. 😊
Nice effect Joan!!!!! I like it!!!!!❤❤❤
Thank you so much Arianna - one more video to come in which I reveal what the liquid is that I use to get the "rusty" effect. 😊
Same question baby oil?
Hello, thanks for the question. I have made a longer video which will reveal exactly what I used to make the "rusty texture". I will say that it's not baby oil though. The video will go live soon. Thanks once again for your interest 😊
Interesting ... but what is the clear fluid you use before the acrylic paint? Is it baby oil?
I use water…
Thanks for the question, much appreciated. Regarding the clear liquid I use all will be revealed in a much longer video (with voice over and explanation) which will reveal exactly what I used to make the "rusty texture". I will say that it's not baby oil though. The video will go live soon. Thanks once again for your interest. 😊
Thanks for commenting - I use water too but towards the end of the process, it has a a lovely effect on the "rusty effect" I don't use water at the beginning of the process though. 😊
Lovely prints Joan!!!!❤😊😊😊 Nice color combination!! Have a nice and blessed Sunday
Thank you so much Arianna, much appreciated x
I sure enjoy watching you gelli print. I’m in USA, Mississippi
awwww that's so kind Cindy, I really appreciate you reaching out to me. So from my home in the U.K. to yours in Mississippi, USA welcome and thank you
Thank you for sharing. I'm from the Central Coast, New South Wales, Australia.
Hello and you're very welcome, I love to share my projects. I also LOVE Australia Julie having visited a few places around your lovely country. I will never forget looking up and seeing the night sky full of stars and far galaxies when we stayed at Ayres Rock Resort, Uluru - it was mind-blowing ! Would love to return again one day. Thank you once more for your lovely message and I hope you continue to catch my videos 😊
I’m watching you from Schenectady NY. (It’s near Albany)
Oooo hello and welcome !!!! I've just Googled your town (looks FAB). Seems to be mid way between New York and Boston. I've been lucky enough to visit both places and loved them both - hopefully will cross the pond again and do some more travelling in the U.S. Thanks for watching 😊
My copy paper looks very thin compared to yours .Would you share the weight or grams of yours? I like them Thank you
I also like to experiment with the gelli plate. I just have fun and wait for what happens. Expecting too much can take the fun out of it. Sometimes I have wonderful results thanks for your advice. Watching you from Fort Myers, Florida in the USA.
Yes I agree, experimenting is so much fun and if you don't expect magic to happen...... it usually does. I am here in the beautiful county of Cheshire in the North Of England - I've been to Fort Myers a few years ago. I have visited Florida quite a few times, one of my favourite places to visit x
New subsciber here and I'm from West Yorkshire 😊
Love the idea to use tools that you can get from home. It looks like you are using black and Payne's gray? Or is the effect of the video. Liked very much the results. Thank you
Thank you, as always. Sorry, forgot to put the details down regarding the paints (I've just amended that). I used ArtStudio - Paynes Grey and Dale Rowney - Titanium White. A question..... do you like to see a short video or a longer "more detailed" one? I'd love to know. Thank you once again 😊
@@butterflysmind Since I am only a beginner loving art I like videos with explanations. I don't mind the long ones. I think the more detailed videos, the more we learn. I usually review your videos for details. Thank you Joan.
Thank YOU and you are more than welcome. I hope that by sharing my successes and failures it will be an encouragement to give it a go. 😊
Love very much your silhouettes Joan. In regards of the inspiring prints they are inspiring to me. The final touches with the Carano d'ache crayons were very effective. What kind d of black pencil are you using to define .
Thank you so much, I really enjoyed putting this together using textured papers that I wasn't very happy with. I use these pencils -www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00241K2UQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Stabilo Aquarellable. Hope that helps
@@butterflysmind thank you Joan. Always waiting for your videos
That's so kind - thank you ❤️
I usually like black but for this one I like white.
Thank you - I really appreciate your comments and observations 😊
That’s is such a great idea! Thank you.
You're more than welcome, glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks once again 😊
It’s so useful to practice experimenting, the learning curve and surprises you get are worth the time. You’ve pulled some lovely prints today, I enjoyed watching you and must spend more time experimenting! Have a good weekend 😊
Thank you for your lovely comments, they are very much appreciated. I love experimenting - sometimes the experiments go well, other times.... not so much. However, it is rare that I throw a piece of paper in the bin, it's always amazing when the most disappointing pull can add a little something to a collage. Never underestimate the power of the gelli plate textured paper (however messy) LOL. Thank you once more
I am learning so much from you channel. Thank you for explaining the details which matter. Opaque on top of Opaque on top of Opaque equals a big mess.
Thank you again. I'm so pleased that my videos are helping you to enjoy the gelli plate experience LOL. It can be very frustrating but also extremely enjoyable ....... but not always in equal measures. If there is something that I can help with please make a suggestion in the comments and I will do my best to help. Thank you once more 😊
I was very frustrated. Thank you for making this video. YES, I see now that the order of the paint makes all the difference. Everything I pulled from my plate looked like mud. I guess other youtubers who demo gelli prints assume those watching are not novice. I had no knowledge that different textures, weights, pigments, etc. of paint varied to such a degree. Now, thanks to you it's clearly obvious paint labels need to be read and chosen based on what you are attempting to achieve. Folk Art paint "only" selected by color without attention to these details will leave a novice with unsuccessful pulls, everytime. This is a great video.
OH MY GOODNESS, thank you so much, I can't tell you how happy your comments have made me. Sometimes I think I'm telling people what they already know and will get quickly bored with my videos. I enjoy making the videos and I have learned so much myself whilst I am making them - I love to experiment and that way I feel that you can learn so much i.e. what works and doesn't work. I hope you continue to watch the videos because there are many more lined up for the coming weeks/months. Thank you once again 😊
I’m so pleased you chose the print you didn’t like, it’s perfect for the lady. I also like ‘the waves’ you added it reminded me of Amphitrite rising from sea. Thank you 😊
Thank you, I really hope you continue to enjoy my little videos (there are lots more to come ). Sometimes I really don't like what I produce texture wise but I hang on to it ...... just in case. I think I agree with you that the print I chose (but initially I didn't like) really blended in nicely. Thank you once agin 😊
A great technique and one I haven’t thought about, but this will be useful for collaging. Thanks for sharing it 😊
You're more than welcome and thank you for leaving your comment - I really hope you have a go at the 'rust" it's super fun. Thanks once again 😊
I love roll out sheet 🤪
Thank you. Sometimes the roll out sheet turns out better than what you have been working on..... a surprising bonus 😊
Loving your prints very much. Beautiful color palette. Thank you Joan!!!
Awww thank you once again - so pleased you enjoyed my leafy textures..... more to come 😊
