Blue River Winter Fly Fishing For Trout (2024 Oklahoma)
10:18 That run was zesty as hell💀
😂
Crystal. That shoal y’all were walking on was 2’ under water
It stinks that the fishing was slow, but that would be awesome to see.
Been a couple times when flow was much higher, not nearly as much action
Was the water still as clear when it was higher or did it get pretty murky?
Wow first time i seen fly gar fishing 👊🎣
It sure is a blast in its own right!
Does anyone know what happens next?
I think I can help you out with that. What are you referring to?
Are those Ombraz glasses?! I have a pair of the round lenses! Got them for when I was filming out of helicopters so they didn't fly off my face lol!
They are, I love ‘em. That’s awesome, man!! I got them because I kept losing/breaking glasses while having two feet on the ground lol.
Nice video work! Sweet looking part of the state. I just moved to Tulsa from Arizona for work and I feel like a kid again getting to see all the watering holes around me. Think I might have to check out this place soon!
Thank you, and welcome to Oklahoma! We have some awesome watering holes here. You are in a good spot, there’s a lot of good water around you. Enjoy!!
Does anything bigger swim in that river? Catching nothing but bait hustlers and minnows. But it did look fun and that's all that really counts.
Absolutely. Kade and Bobby went back a couple of weeks after this video and caught some really nice fish! There’s some really nice size browns. We’ll do another video later this year targeting some bigger fish over there.
Already been done. Rattlesnake blake fly fishing for gar. Nice video
Dude I was thinking the same thing - what a rip off 😮
Aye woah woah, nobody claimed to beat Rattlesnake Blake over here!
Thanks for the compliment - I’ll give yours a watch!
I love catching gar in a yak , especially when you catch those big was … hang on for ride . Love sight fishing .
Yeah we had a blast…Looking forward to doing it again in the next couple of weeks!
I got some spots in Tulsa, but the gar are really picky?! What lake was this at?
I’m trying to get better about not spot burning places that aren’t already super popular - shoot me an email at windyfishguy@gmail.com and I’ll hook you up with the spot.
my house got hit in claremore it was a crazy time for sure but we needed the rain
We still need rain. Hope the house is okay!
@@OkieFish still fighting insurance but im sure we will get it fixed. i cant get on the roof anymore i would fix it myself. sucks being disabled vet and not able to do things myself. shot some big gar and carp at oolagah last night with my son biggest one over 4 feet
@@GrowinwithAJ nothing like fishing to take your mind off shitty situations like insurance battles!
@@GrowinwithAJ thank you for your service!
@@OkieFish amen to that
Great video. I was watching it to see if I want the standup RAC, i DO have the bucket RAC. I have been fishing my BOTE Breeze on the Tualitin River in Oregon... I caught a HUGE smally with it!! Also- FWIW, I like the product review. Its very relatable to fishing and I think the BOTE is the way to go, with all of the mounts and accessories. THANKS.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed. That’s awesome on the Smallie! I just caught my PB on mine last week on the Blue River in OK. We did a float on it, and I loaded my RAC down with all types of stuff and was not disappointed. Currently working on putting that video out!
ive been wanting to hit beavers bend this summer but havent got down there yet
I haven’t been this summer yet either! Let me know how it is if you make it.
i cant find this steam on the map. could you give me some waypoints. awesome video. i did outdoor channel on youtube a few years ago but youtube shut me down and lost over 3000 subs so i know what it takes to make these video and mad respect bro . if yah ever in claremore stop bye . i got a bowfishing boat also not the best boat but it can take 2 -3 people with ease hit me up maybe you know a good spot i hit fort gibson other night me and my wife shot at 40 fish at least some gar over 4 feet.
Appreciate the offer! I might have to take you up on that. Thanks for the compliment. It definitely takes a lot of work! Shoot me an email windyfishguy@gmail.com
Cool review thank you for sharing👌Been considering one for targeting carp on the fly here on the salt flats and canals of Utah. Cheers✌️
Thank you! I am new to carp, but the SUP does feel like a handy tool to target them with.
are they only there in winter and spring?
Yes! They told me the other day that the stocking date is normally November depending on water temp.
This place is a gem let’s hope it stays that way. 🤫 should change the title 😅
I think you’re right! I’ll leave it in the tags, but take it out of the title so that you can only find it if you know what you are looking for.
@@OkieFish much love man! I’m glad you enjoyed the creek. Been going since I was 13 and it’s hard to beat on a hot summer afternoon.
@@Scoopswift I’m looking forward to going back and seeing more of it! That’s an awesome creek to grow up on.
what access point is that? thinking about driving up from NTX
Shoot me an email: windyfishguy@gmail.com and I’ll get ya the details. Trying to find the right balance of what to share for the world and what to add an extra step to - for the sake of the Barren Fork locals
Love it man! Just got back from the upper Illinois this past weekend. We had a blast!
It’s such an awesome area! I’m itching to spend more time at different access points.
Looks awesome! I live in Tulsa and tried fishing there around april and got nothing. Thinking of going back next weekend and giving it another shot. Any general tips? I have a 5wt 9 foot rod.
Thank you! Man honestly, I have minimal experience with smallmouth fishing. Idk if I got lucky or if I was doing something right. Poppers early morning, and late late evening - don’t be scared to let it sit for a while, they might strike on the pause. Crawfish colors worked best, and letting them drift with twitches on the swing. Also had luck retrieving it against the current. At Blue River, we’ve been having luck letting crawfish patterns sink to the bottom in still, big pools, then bringing it in at a decent pass. Haven’t had much luck with hoppers, but I’ve had a couple more seasoned smallmouth fisherman tell me it should be on soon (at least at the Blue).
Barron fork is king. All Native Neosho smallies! Great video.
I live in Tulsa, too. I fished Barren Fork Creek A LOT when I lived in Tahlequah. I practically lived at the Welling Bridge, as much time as I spent on BFC fishing under it and around it. I didn't over complicate things. I often used a Cabela's Three Forks 7.5' 3-weight rod, a tapered 7.5' 4X general purpose trout leader, and a size 12 Prince Nymph, and would catch fish on every cast doing it. You've got a five-weight rod, so you're golden as far as that goes. As you probably already know, "5 weight" doesn't really impact the size of the fish you catch as much as the size of flies you can comfortably cast. A five-weight can handle the most common range of trout flies from size 22 midges up to unweighted woolly buggers up to size 6 or 4, depending on your casting skill. I've caught sea-run brown trout over two feet long from California's Trinity River on 5-weight rods. I caught a three-foot long lingcod fishing under the Coronado Bridge on San Diego Bay with a five-weight, and plenty of legal size 22" or bigger halibut from Capistrano Beach with one, too, as well as barred surfperch up to four pounds, corbina up to about 26 inches, and even the occasional leopard shark. Point is that "five weight" limits the size, weight, and aerodynamic drag of the flies you can deliver, more than the size of the fish you can deal with, And, as I said, I caught SCORES of fish from Barren Fork Creek with common trout flies like size 12 Prince Nymphs or size 12 Sierra Buggers or size 10 Matukas. Most of the time, I'd grab a rod, reel, my leader and tippet wallet, and a box of Prince Nymphs and "go catching." I wouldn't bother to bring a bunch of different flies. The hard part isn't getting bit. It is knowing that you've been bit. Fish don't have hands. If they want to check something out, they gotta put it in their mouths. If they're smallmouth bass in a stream, they have to eat every day, so they aren't inclined to pass up an easy meal. I'm of the opinion that at a place like BFC, your fly is probably in a fish's mouth more often than you might think it is. I didn't catch a lot of fish there because I'm some super genius. I didn't catch a bunch of fish there because I used to be a licensed and bonded fly fishing guide in California, or because I was a contributing editor with masthead credit for California Fly Fisher magazine, Los Angeles Times Outdoors, and others. It's because fly fishing Southern California's surf zone environments made me a 'Slack Nazi", I keep the take-detecting slack down to a minimum so I can feel grabs others might miss. There's a scene in the video where the guy is retrieving his fly with his rod tip off the water and a little bow of slack from his rod tip to the surface of the water. You'll not ever see me do that. My rod tip is touching the water if not in it. I'm alsyo not too proud to set the hook on phantom fish that I think might be there but are not. "Swings are free," as the saying goes, and I'd rather look like a chump by setting the hook at the slightest hint of a grab than be one by not sealing the deal when my fly was in a fish's mouth.
@@jerroldshelton9367 What this guy said! Thanks for the detailed response. I'm sure many will benefit, including myself.
@@jerroldshelton9367thank you for this man, I don’t have a lot of people give me this good of advice. I taught myself how to fly fish, which means I’m quite the amateur!
Cloudy winter days = zebra midges, size 20, in black, red, olive, and disco midges in red or green tinsel if the sun starts peaking through the clouds. Drift under a strike indicator. Weight and lengthen leader as needed. This rig can get you every cast action when it's cold or the fish are heavily pressured.
From the guru himself! That does seem to do the trick. I like dropping off a hopper once I get my depth!
Appreciate you throwing some advice out there!
Amazing video!! Glad to see OK being repped!
Thank you. People need to see how dope our state is - and the main people I’m talking about are Oklahomans! I hate to hear home state slander
Are you using a Redington field kit in this video and what do you think of it?
I am! I love it. I have fished with several different, and nicer rods - while some are noticeably better, the reddington still holds its own. I could see in the future wanting something a little nicer, but it has been perfect for my learning journey this past year or two. I also beat the crap out of it when river fishing from my SUP, and so far it has taken the beating quite well.
I’m a new ISUP fly fisher too! I have the rackham with a bixpy motor, I LOVE it. Most difficult learning curve for me is anchoring. I need to figure out a better system. Anyways, headed to Tahlequah this week, wondering if you had any recommendations for fly shops or outfitters in the area?
SUP with a motor is sick! I am also curious about what anchor systems people use. We didn’t have a lot of time on this trip to hit up any shops or outfitters. I know there are several guides in the area, I just don’t have any experience with any specific one. Get back with me if you find anything cool out!
I too am in support of “catchin some freakin trout in OK” 😂 headed there Tuesday!
Have a good time! I’ve been wanting to go back to get after some smallies. We just hit up Barren Fork this past weekend and it was awesome.
i dont have a Bote, but i fishing our local tulsa waters on SUP. i never see anyone else at Oklahoma lakes fishing from a SUP, but me. :)
I am surprised that more people don’t fish from SUPs. I understand on bigger lakes, but on smaller waters it seems ideal. Especially in warmer months!
I like the product reviews. I am also a fly fisherman from Oklahoma and am really interested in that specific paddle board. Have you taken it to the lower Illinois or broken bow yet? If not, that would be a great video.
The plan was to go to Upper Illinois this weekend, but that fell through. Looking forward to testing it out on some moving water and I’ll make sure and film it!
Nice, how was the stability while swinging the rod, that is always my issue, especially when you are out doing streamers? Thoughts on floating that on the upper or lower Illinois?
After taking it out two or three times for a few hours, I feel very comfortable casting my 8wt. I don’t second guess my weight placement or aggressive casting anymore. SUP legs come quick!
Also - definitely going to try a float on one of those rivers soon.
That’s awesome i love that the ice chest fits on there perfectly and you can use it as a seat and have a few crispy boys!
They sell a BOTE brand ice chest, but I imagine most ice chests fit on there as well as mine did. They all keep crispy boys just as cold
Awesome! Rock on 🤘🏼
Our number one fan!
It’s been taken over by Mexicans. Don’t go there the water stinks now.
Great video mate!
Thank you sir!
Nice one guys, keep them coming. My son comes down every few months from Colorado to join me, to fly fish the local species.
That’s awesome. I’ll be going to Colorado sometime soon to do the same!
@@OkieFish I will be up there fishing with my son the week of June 3rd. Have fun, let me know if you need recommended places, we are from there, and have a few good times and places we go to avoid the locals and tourists
Dudes, that is awesome.
Really looking forward to getting back out there! I feel like we are just scratching the surface in that spot
Nice vid!

Appreciate it, Mark! Yeah it is a good time. Looking forward to some more of it soon!
