Farmer Devin Brown

Добавлен 11 фев 2021
I am a 4th generation farmer whose initial career choice pulled me far away from the family farm. I bring an engineer's mind to the modern day farm to solve problems and share information....mostly through Vlogging as well as agriculture product reviews. I love to try out new techniques, technologies, products or equipment
Follow me as I document and share my experiences (hopefully more good than bad) as I take over the family grain farm in SE Saskatchewan, maybe we'll both learn a few things along the way! I hope to be entertaining while still being educational and honest.
I'm always open for constructive criticism, comments and questions
I'll do my best to reply to any comments or questions

I Hated that Slough, We'll Farm it Instead

Only once in 20 years have we got to farm that slough, usually too wet to seed and then it dries up in the summer. I'm using Ditch assist to grade it out so the water drains in the spring and we can plant through it. #agriculture #farming #tractor #drainage

Nice video. I have a 550DT and agree on all you commented on. I would be very leery about having a chain or anything metal which could hit the glass. The glass is tough, but it also takes the slightest hit in the right spot to break it.
I don’t understand why Tiling hasn’t become a thing on the Canadian prairies.
I think it should be, especially now with the cost of land. A lot of regulatory headaches right now. Hopefully they can clean up the process. I hope to do some in a few years

@ it’s a small world. You probably carried your fair share of samples across the lease!
@jeffreyhearn8404 oodles
That got boring fast
The vanes controls from the cab is a game changer in this combine imo
once you learn the system you always forward your controls to slow down or speed up before the combine reads it. I'm always changing parameters to get the most out of the combine. I learned to love it.
Have you ever had any hydro issues on your patriot? Hydro pumps? Wheel motors?
@@nadethpalmer9411 nope. Just got it back from the dealership. Had to shim a couple of planetary drives, and had a leaky gear increaser but that’s it
Excellent video, everytime i watch these videos i learn lots.
And then everything you see like when it’s running against the DJI, especially in hilly environments the American ones always have freak out, thinking there’s obstacles and stuff in the way, and they can barely climb the hill. Well and most of them crash so I don’t know DJI for now still has the best software out there.
I agree. This drone looks like another DJI knock off
But the software is not better than DJI. That’s the only problem. DJI has the best software in the drone industry bar none.
I definitely need to give it a demo
hi there i had a few crack on me and the answer is u have to grind off the paint off in between the rims where they mount up its the paint that causes them to crack i know it sounds crazy but believe me that is the answer
@@StevenHofer-h6c that’s crazy. Will probably give it a try. Is it just too thick?
@@AxiomAcres the paint is just enough for the rims to work loose and have wiggle room I have a harvester friend who told me that they had that issue as well and that fixed it and he runs 20 case ih combines
So just wire wheel to bare metal?
@@AxiomAcres I wire wheeled it till all paint was gone on the flange where it bolts up and it is quite thick
If you are willing to jump to a class 9 i would definitely recommend it the capacity difference is insane between an 8250 and 9250. Also we run 50ft macdons on the 9250s and they handle just fine. If you have the financial atuff to jump to a 9250 and fd250 i would say thag would be a great upgrade. If not u can alwys find a good 8250 and fd240 or 245
Class 9 is definitely an option. Gonna be a couple more years before we work into the 50’ headers. Dad just traded his 8240 on an 8250 with the auger for a 50’. Are the FD2 headers as good as people say they are? Was supposed to have a demo last year but it got sold
@AxiomAcres yes the fd2 are a amazing all the issues we had with out fd145s got fixed with the fd2. The fd145s used to have a major issue with the center feed drum plugging up that's what would limit the combine we never could fill our old 9240s. And boy oh boy straight cutting canola with an fd2 is great because I'd the 3 part reel
why raster and not zamboni style for less turns?
@@pubfixture that’s a program/engineering question but straight lines should be most efficient and best coverage as there isn’t turn compensation

@ My son is a tech at our dealer….. that’s my secret
Story checks out. lol. I don’t like going too much over 2000 threshing hours. I planned on keeping my FD135 much longer but it burnt up. I have no issues hanging on to headers for a while
Great video Devin
I see Chicoine's has an 8250 with automation listed. Usually they have high prices but this one is priced reasonably.
@@totaledmyGN yeah. Haven’t looked terribly hard yet. Don’t need it for this years taxes. Was interested in a 8250 at Bourassa in Weyburn. Just not gonna rush into anything yet. Lots of time.
Gotta go for the 8.90s or 9.90s at Bourassas. Dealers right there. Plus you know some good guys to get those things running top notch.
@@AxiomAcres I don't think anyone is going to need tax deductions the next couple years. lol
Hey guys, hope you give me some opinions about the droplet size. I noticed that J100 droplet size can set below 40μm, is it an essential feature in spray drone? And, does spraying with atomization below 40 microns comply with spray drone regulations?
40 was honestly an accident. When they were showing me the features; we were gonna spray at 200 micron but then the slider bar must have gotten touched and set to minimum. I’m currently not read up on the full regulations around drone application. I do plan on having a couple of podcast style videos over the winter to dig into this further as I have had lots of questions and feedback. If you have any other questions/comments; please let me know and I will do my homework for the future videos
a few years in . . . farmers are realizing its MUCH better to outsource aerial spraying, UNLES you have enough excess labor to deal with all the BS associated with legal drone operations and obsolescence of equipment. flying a drone is fun, pushing buttons not so much and these drones aren't tough like tractors
I was told lime will help salinity, buy a bit and try it.
Hey, I saw this and was wondering if it’s real. Comes from an aviation lawyer in Florida. Not qualifying for the FAA Medical is what’s held me up from the AG industry. “ Last week, I helped Veteran Drone Services LLC obtain the first-ever Part 137 55-pound and heavier exemption that does NOT require a 3rd class medical for Part 137 day operations.”
@@DKTek07 unfortunately I am not familiar with the US FAA regulations. I do find it odd that a medical would be required for an unmanned drone but can also see how they would call you a pilot and require it, I myself would consider you as an operator
That doesn't seem right at all. That contradicts all current regulations.
The medical isn’t required for the 107 (which I have)under 55 pounds but is required for the 44807. So gonna have to contact the lawyer and see if I can do the same if possible.
@DKTek07 is the 55 lb limit payload or gross? Can’t imagine accomplishing many acres on 55 lbs GVW. In Canada, our threshold for registration and licensing is half a pound
@ Flying gross weight
You dont know HOW much time I am waiting for this drone to come out
At the slow speeds and narrow swath you used, your canopy penetration should be very good. Thank you for sharing your operational parameters! Higher speeds/wider swaths will degrade that penetrative capability geometrically.
That was my thoughts on it. We wanted to make sure we could see the optimal conditions. Do you by chance know where to find a publication of sprayer pattern width/speed vs boom width for hz rotors? I am planning to do a podcast style video touching on questions and comments like this.
@@AxiomAcres i want to see this video!
I’m thinking it’ll probably be February
Becks seeds didn't w very comprehensive test of drones vs ground rigs vs airplanes. I don't know where to find the results tho
I thought that spray drones are licensed to use in Canada at this time.
The drones themselves are legal to spray with if you get the proper qualifications, there’s not a lot of chemicals that are labeled for drone application; although they are for fixed boom aerial applications such as a helicopter or plane. It’s mainly a technicality. At least that’s how it was explained to me
I'm sold on the tech but the drones aren't quite there yet. The tanks are just too small.
@@chrisb_71 I agree. I’m gonna have another video in a while (might move it up) but tank size, battery capacity, communication between drones (or ground unit) shared by a single controller, and several other potential features I would like to see before jumping in with both feet
Agreed, good opportunity improvements w. certain parts of the tech. But regarding tank size- keep in mind that drones will use the water rates for the Aerial label (same amount of AI that goes in the ground label, but much less carrier/water bc of their speed). Most products are labeled 2-3 GPA which has even drones this size doing ~ 50 acres in an hour. Of course if you had to water down the AI to ground rates, these tanks wouldn't be enough.
@bryansanders6129 couldn’t agree more
That's weird. I have been flying and making money for the past 2 years with spray drones. I think people need to understand them before blindly judging. lol
@jonbauer2977 good for you. For me the tank is too small.
Good luck fixing your middle canvas roller Devin

Good morning
I think those mad concaves are just an upgraded case concave. Why dont you go with Sunnybrooks and save yourself the hassle of always having to swap out for different crops? I dont understand why farmers cant easily see the engineering benefits of a Sunnybrook?.
Lots of disappointment from canola fields this year which is what today's price action shows. There was a lot of selling the rally but the market found a bottom and rallied off of it so that means the traders know the crop was smaller.
Great video Devin
Southern Manitoba yield is crap also. Heat killed it. A lot of coffee talk of less canola acres and more Soybeans next year.
I was kicking around the idea of putting some beans in next year but am concerned about the stockpile/carryout
@@AxiomAcres We are looking for planter this year. I think we will have more acres in soybean than canola for quite a few years.(in this area) We cant count on canola yields any more so might as well sow a lower input crop like soybeans. It cleans up the weedy fields also.
My canola was crap too. Between the heat and the wind..i should have bought a giant vacuum cleaner to get it off the ground. I used brett young, i think their canola is garbage. Nothing but disaster with it. They keep pushing it to sell me. Frankly, with the crappy yield and crappy price, I'm all canola'd out.
I did a dekalb trial last year, out performed invigor 340 by 5-10%. This year 340 won by 30%. Dad likes to say “there’s a reason everyone compares themselves to invigor
@AxiomAcres yes, I believe that. I think brett young has a ways to go before they promote their pod integrity any more. I have alot of Bush, and my land is well sheltered. Yet it was completely shelled out. I took a tour around my neighbour's...and the area. Standing or laying, seemed alot less loss. Just my 2 cents and experience.
@thebreakofdon5188 where are you? Not much for Brett young around here that I know of
@@AxiomAcres I'm in Esterhazy. I think I'm about the only one growing it around here. I'm not going to be growing it anymore either.
How do you like it after a full year? Did you ever look at a meridian reliabelt?
I love it still. There was a pulley & tensioner upgrade that I installed, had to fix a scraper that broke and the starter relay failed but it’s been really good otherwise. I don’t consider it “oilseed safe” as you’ll have higher dockage in canola. I looked at meridian but the didn’t have an under mount motor
@AxiomAcres That's great!! Ekay looks like they make a really good auger but I'm in the US and hate to buy something so far away and no dealers at all. They're just a direct sale by order business. Anyone around you tried one of their augers?
@stirv6462 nobody I know has an r-Kay auger. I agree, looks like a good auger.
I had right inside go on my 7230 with 12 row folding corn head on while going 21mph down the road. I check mine more often now. Be safe keep up the hard work
