Exotic wood look WITHOUT the cost (secret technique)
Did you know that the Poplar wood species can rival the look of an exotic wood? Using some easy tricks and techniques I found that the originally unpleasant tones of the wood can be adjusted with either sun or wood bleach, and I've tested both approaches here. Along with the tests I am building some handmade illuminated lightboxes out of Poplar, while using backlight film, White acrylic, and some simple LED lighting. Save some money with Poplar!

Confronting *that* problem EVERY woodworker faces…

I've been adding this step into my furniture building process, and it's completely improved my work. This example shows a Walnut leg table base for the handmade piano in my previous DIY 'Rhodes' video, from a very special slab of wood.... Destroying a well known synth to make a Rhodes (a ridiculous build)
Просмотров 318 тыс.Год назад
Building a custom Rhodes inspired piano for my home studio from a Yamaha Reface CP, merging the electronics from the synth with a mid-century inspired furniture build using Peruvian Walnut, Valchromat, MDF, and American Walnut in the build. While this is a pretty involved build in the woodshop, the basic premise and teardown process is repeatable and allows for endless options of a new custom p...

thanks so much for making this video! i watched the whole thing with a smile on my face, such a clever idea and such wonderful execution!
I recently picked up a beautiful piece of 1x3 poplar at Home Depot that's mostly dark on one side and mostly light on the other. Made my wife a nice bread bow knife out of it for Christmas, but now I have something new and fun to try with the rest of the board. Thanks for showing this experiment here, and I agree that the bleach produces a better result.
I am surprised. Isn't poplar super light and soft? Are there different types of poplar that make a difference?
That info about Poplar was pretty good, but....man.....that broomstick!
Interesting, informative and beautifully presented. ❤
I built a Gibson Custom Shop just for $800, but I never imagined that someone could build a Rhodes synthesizer on their own. This is amazing 👏
I’ve seen some preserving color over time via pressure resin stabilization.
Really nice work have you ever used osage orange it was used by native Americans for bow making it has very high specific gravity its very beautiful orange to dark color i carve wood and when finished it Really nice thanks for sharing and new sub 😀
I love poplar, and this is game changing. Love your work!
Ahhhhh, the enemy that was triumphant over man during the ‘Australian Civil War’ 😂
😆
Great vid. New sub. Thank you for sharing
Just wow… gorgeous
Beautiful. ❤
Great video and love your narration, thank you for sharing.
Outstanding project!!
Thank you!
There's a lot of food for creative thought in this video. Thanks for taking the time and for the post.
This is absolutely amazing!
Respect
That annoying muzak really adds to the annoyance.
Wow man you are such a profesional god-level woodworker... The Steve Jobs of woodworking ! Never seen anything like this.
I very much like artists who work in mixed media. Yhis is a perfect example.
I LOVE poplar! When i found out about it, i was restoring a Hoosier cabinet for a friend. I removed the 50 million layers of paint and was going to paint the whole thing a fern green. Once i got the paint removed from the doors, i fell in love. The grain almost perfectly matched the paint. A contrasting green and yellow. I left the doors barely and just varnished them. Poplar is perfect for boxea. Im currently restoring a draw knife and using poplar for the handles
Awesome build!
Thank you!
I am surprised that the oil does not negatively impact the lacquer. In my experience it mottles the finish and sometimes makes it cloudy or causes adhesion problems. Anyway, beautiful work!
When I got that idea I knew that someone already did it. And I found this video. Nice banter, nice lo-fi editing, grat work awesome result. Congratulation!
Absolutely beautiful work!
This is beautiful and what I need!
Dayum! thought of this when i first got one of these, so epic to see you actually pull it of on this level. Killer work!!
Beautiful!
Just tried it on some Poplar scraps from Rockler, worked beautifully! Thanks for posting, I would've never thought of this! Happy New Year to you and yours!!
That build should be in a museum of art! Here's a little trick to improve your soldering skills; Don't melt the solder on your soldering iron, instead heat the part that your want to solder until it is hot enough to melt the solder on it. The flux in the core of your solder will then remove the oxydes from your part, and allow the solder to fuse chemically to the base metal. When you try to bring a blob of solder from your iron to your part, the flux is long gone and your blob won't fuse properly to the metal. Lastly, it is easier to tin separately your wire and your part, and then bring them together for re-melting. If you want to solder both at the same time, loop the wire to your part so they hold together while you heat them with one hand and feed the solder with the other hand. Remember, never feed the solder to the iron, feed it to the part you're soldering. Thanks for the video!
Amazing work man! Subscribed!
Let the Haters hate. Im learning Carpenter and your Chanel just gave a lot of inspiration for my Endproject I need to do in One Year. Maybe I will make an Rhodeisch Instrument to with ,,Plastic in a Casket``. I will let you know. Stay Crative. Much love
I rarely watch a movie twice let alone a RUclips video. Thanks for making interesting content.
Thanks so much for the kind words (and double views haha) I appreciate it!
*The Production video quality given the time and attention to detail you put into the Rhodes is as you'd expect.... AMAZING!! Well done - more please :))*
Interesting concept.
That was awesome.
I spy some classic Yamaha amps!! And I love my reface CS!
Great idea and beautiful attention to detail. I'd love a "stage" version without the speakers and a flat top
Great video, very interesting!
The accent.. chord progressions.. Baron Bane?! :)
Great work!
Very nice work! This takes an early mod/build I've seen converting the Reface CP to a Rhodes suitcase format and really elevates it to a totally different universe...Love it!
Do you think the keystation 61 can be shortened to 55 keys? I know theres a 49 key version but thats synth action. I have a 61 that I'd like to embed into the pullout tray of my desk. Will steal your wheel weight trick.
Oh, boy! (Rubs hands together) should we tell him? (pokes friend in the ribs with an elbow) he hasn’t seen it! Rex, you should watch “Exotic wood look WITHOUT the cost (secret technique)” by Munstre: Studio Furniture
i need that intro song in a full version, so good
what a piece of a frankenstein loved it !!!
As a RUclips commenter 10 months late to your video, I really wanted to participate in the comments section meme that has been absolutely beaten to death and extended into macabre levels of unfunny, so I made this comment.
Whats the M Audio keyboard like? Theyre so cheap online but want a decent sized midi controller that doesnt have really clacky cheap feeling keys. EPIC project, very well done sir.
they feel pretty cheap and just wouldn't recommend them unless you are on a really tight budge
Lol the ad for this video had a rhodes being played
