Martin Mars Hawaii Mars water bomber last flight August 11 2024 seen from Galiano Island.
Today, Aug 11 2024, was the last flight for the Hawaii Mars water bomber that was stationed at Sproat Lake on Vancouver Island. It made several sweeps along eastern Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands before heading to its final destination at the BC Aviation Museum in North Saanich. While it did not make a water drop on its last flight it did give us a show of skimming the surface of Trincomali Channel before heading off to meet the Snowbirds that then accompanied it in spectacular fashion on the last leg of its journey. Cool ✌🏻
Alomar
Who named this plane?
R.I.P Just a little then, get back to having a wonderful time! No limitations now!
The gulf islands got quite the show
Thank god her work done is and not needed in Alberta we have become one with fires
End of July 1972 small Forrest fire on outskirts of Port McNeill BC had two passes of the Hawaii and knocked it down. Putting this machine into retirement imo was a mistake. Having it sit since 2015 not being used was a gross oversight by authorities who traded off for helicopters and CL215s thinking they’re more efficient.
What a great video - thanks for sharing!
Awesome moments captured ! 👏👍👍
Great job - thanks for sharing the video!
Super cool Gary. Great that you were able to catch this!
My favorite video from last nights final trip!! I haven’t seen any other skim videos from last night. Unbelievable
What a bittersweet day for everyone who loves this plane. Such a privilege to see it's last flight. Thank you for posting this video.
Thank you Gary for this beautiful video, it gives me goosebumps to see this beautiful plane taking its last flight. Bas also gave me a video that Pat had made of her flying around it with the other planes. Wonderful !! Kind regards from the Netherlands
The last of its kind
Excellent video! Thank you!
She may have been born in America but her home was British Columbia.
Our Canadair Water Bombers are also renowned world-wide for capability and durability... but what a beautiful beast this Martin is !
Port Alberni BC is the closest city and Sproat Lake (not Sprout Lake as many wrongly think) is where they were based for their entire working life as the world's largest air tanker - in both size of the aircraft and volume of drop. The Hawaii Mars and the sister Philippine Mars saved countless areas in both BC and the USA and Mexico during times of need battling forest fires. Originally flown was a Grumman Goose as the bird dog (or spotter aircraft) together with the Mars in the earlier days. After Coulson Aviation took over (basically rescued the Mars) it decided to do a much needed upgrade to some of the systems like a modern glass dash (instrument panel) like you would find in any modern aircraft as well as some of the other mechanical systems that are involved in the water drop. As well they installed telemetry (think Indy car or NASCAR) that would let the fire boss on the ground see exactly what the Mars was seeing in real time. At this point they also switched out the Goose for a Sikorsky S76 to act as the bird dog. There was a Boeing 747 converted into a air tanker by Evergreen Aviation but it was done 3 or 4 decades after the Mars. Unfortunately it too was retired just when it was needed most. 😢 Coulson Aviation is the world's largest air tanker business doing business all over the world. Their latest projects include both fixed wing Boeing 737 - 400 (?) and Rotary Boeing Chinook helicopters with night vision that can work through the darkness to fight fires. Wayne Coulsons father started out in the logging industry in the early 60's and became a well respected person for the way he treated his employees and his work ethic. Fast forward to the 90's and helicopter logging became a thing as the easy wood was long gone. Along the way the consortium that owned the Martin Mars was going to shut the door. Wayne stepped up to the plate and has never looked back, often times leading the industry with innovative ideas and 1st class results in the air. Kudos to the Coulson family for all they have done and do.
Another great American product in its time.
Where is this?

Who remembers buying firecrackers from Chung Chuck!
My father used to drive me from Richmond to Chung Chucks farm in the sixties to buy firecrackers. The daughters served the customers from the old wood stove where they hid the goods.
He was always in trouble with the law, but he was smarter than they took him for and he always won in court!
Does this pass have a rocky bottom? If so, they could be scratching themselves.
In there natural habitat loving life
Beautiful! 🥰
Never ceases to amaze how whales and dolphins of all sizes can leap high into the air and also exhale and inhale in 1 second and have enough oxygen to stay underwater for so long. Amazing.
No joke one of the most incredible angles I’ve ever seen! Life changing 🥹🤞🏻
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😮
Looks like they’re showing off some new moves 😊
What an amazing experience this must have been to watch all of those orcas in their natural habitat! Beautiful animals and they are very very smart.
Awesome! :D
