Jenn Learns Didgeridoo
Канада
Добавлен 4 май 2017
Didgeridoos, curiosity, joy, and practice meet learning theory. Bears frequently assist.
The BearWithMe Audio Team loves to talk about didges, playing didge, and learning theory.
Daily* playing, practice, and study since March 2017 gives Jenn and the BearWithMe Audio Team lots to chat about.
* We've skipped playing about 20 days from travel or illness over 7 years. We have a strong compulsion to play.

Complicated Rhythm Soundscape
This 5 minute soundscape is on a low A yucca didgeridoo. The rhythm is 11 beats. I’ve added some voice and explored the tempo. I demonstrated my learning process for this rhythm in the videoruclips.net/video/YmMttHPYvck/видео.htmlsi=5ORVfzPwA7xKd8Qc
The rhythm is 11 beats:
Dum’ kata nka dee dee t-tg taka nka nka dum’ t-tgwith a breath on the dums (marked by ‘) and breath on the n of nk.
Each of dum, kata, nka, dee, taka, and t-tg take the same amount of time.
Rhythm Source:
I listened to a very fast piece of music by Dubravko Lapaine and wrote down what I heard. I’m quite sure what I constructed is NOT what he played. But that’s ok. I like my version his rhythm.

Faster Learning of Complicated Didgeridoo Rhythms

I’m learning an 11 count rhythm by turning it into smaller chunks and working backwards from the end. Do you practice rhythms this way? In many styles of music chunking happens with equal length segments, here I choose chunks that are like words for me. I then collect the words together to make phrases. The rhythm is 11 beats:Dum’ kata nka dee dee t-tg taka nka nka dum’ t-tgwith a breath on the...
Winter Wonderland Road Trip Delay Didgeridoo Soundscape

On a 1200 km road trip we got stopped for almost two hours as crew did snow clearing work to prevent avalanches. A box didge and a beautiful view helped us pass the time. No avalanches occurred. Enjoy the beauty of winter evergreen trees coated in fluffy white snow. The rhythm is a wandering mix of takawaka and tawa. Low A Didgeridoo Rhythmic Soundscape

Fifteen minutes of exploring rhythms on a Didgeridoo in low A. What went well? We played for 15 minutes and only dropped it twice. The tea break was exceptionally short. The BearWithMe Audio Team can tell what the various rhythms are. Can you? What can I do differently? Try again and play for a full 15 minutes straight. Work on more dynamics (have you noticed this is a theme in my comments?) Cr...
Luscious Low Didgeridoo in F# (46 Hz)
Просмотров 5928 дней назад
The Purple Lady is a purpleheart wood Iglica in F#. A dream didgeridoo. The rhythm is two bars of 11 beats. My life would be easier if I chose simpler patterns. I practice my listening skills by listening to recordings of Dubravko Lapaine and creating something (that I can play) that has the rhythm structure that I hear. I have learned to hear faster by listening with the intent to transcribe. ...

Homework from a lesson with Dubravko Lapaine. Played on an E but assigned to be played on an F# an octave lower. The rhythm is Dum Dum Tawa Dum Tawa Tawa Dum Tawa. Dubravko writes the rhythm as Dum’ Dum’ Tave Dum’ Tave Tave Dum’ Tave. The rhythm is from the video “My most fundamental didgeridoo knowledge - PUSH and PULL principle” ruclips.net/video/Rh2ewMbi9mc/видео.htmlsi=Ra3JZFolGsq3XNoX&t=63...

Low notes with Laughter

Dual didge by @lucoDeMerbo. Called Laughter for the joy it brings to those who try to play it. Note is A0 so my phone did not pick up all the sound spectrum but it still sounds luscious with headphones. #didgeridoo #lownote.
Are you playful?

Homework Attempt 3 (after 2 weeks)

@DuendeDidgeridoo wanted our video after two weeks of daily practice. I did 20-40 minutes a day on this. It stole much of the time from my other rhythm practice but was fun to do. His line 1, 2, and 4: tada wa- dum dum (8 beat line) My line 3: tkwk twk with in-breath toots (7 beat line) Prvi: This is faster than I could play it two weeks ago. Drugi: The transition from toot to drone and back i...
Homework attempt 2

td ng- dum dum td ng- dum dum tknk tnk td ng- dum dum An 8 8 7 8 pattern which might be written by some as: tada wa' dum dum tada wa' dum dum takawak tawaka tada wa' dum dum removing the written vowels helps me think and maybe play faster. @DuendeDidgeridoo assigned some homework which I am still trying to figure out. Sound brought to you by a Sumo in A from Duende Didgeridoo.
Homework attempt 1

Dubravko Lapaine asked people to practice a rhythm 30 minutes a day everyday for two weeks. He wanted the first day shared and the last day shared so we could see our progress. This might be the fifth day of something close to 30 minutes a day. As Medvjedi worked on this for several weeks after it came out in September this is not really the beginning and is much better than initial attempts. t...
wow this is so awesome! this makes me want to how to play!!!❤❤❤❤
Thank you sooo much! For me playing the instrument is even more amazing than listening to it. 🥰
Suuper nive work!! Well done 🥰💪
@DidgePen Thank you! Your videos are motivating me to post.
Yeah 👍 so happy to see you with this didgeridoo! I miss it ! Great video Jennifer, well explained!
Thank you for saying this is well explained. Comments like this help me to know what to post. 🙏I'm so glad Thistle was available when I visited you! It's the perfect travel companion! 🐧
Wonderful!
Thank you for commenting! I do appreciate it. Your Igliza playing is beautiful.
I want a sumo I love bass notes and even though I’m a girl I sing base always have . 😂✊🏽
@Mixed_Activist Dubravko's Sumos are glorious. If you can play low notes then ask for an A or G. The A is just enough higher that it is very, very playable. The G is a delightful rumble that I love. 🥰 I learned to play low notes by using an Andrea Furlan hardfiberglass telescopic didgeridoo. I added 5-10 cm of length at a time and kept asking for more pipe. 🤣 The lowest note that I regularly play is A0 (the octave below the Sumo A) but I don't have the technology to record that well. ☹️ Singing base must be awesome.
@@JennDidge dude I platonically love you thank you for making this! I have it on loop and I’m vibing and it speaks to my core! My inner most primal energy! I even started to dance a bit! ✊🏽
How utterly delightful! @Mixed_Activist playing it is even better than listening to it! 💙
Wonderful :)
Thank you so much for watching my videos and commenting! 💙
Nice 😅
Thanks 😅
Cool old school!!!
Thank you kind Sir!
Congratulations and welcome to the happy few who may call an Iglica their own!
Thank you! I am sooo happy Purple Lady came to live with me!
By the way who created that incredible didg?
@JamesTruett-d30 This is a Sumo in A by Dubravko Lapaine. Fairly wide bore but still has accessible toots when I practice enough. 🥰
@@JennDidgeI was thinking it was one of his. I’m too broke for his stuff unfortunately. Do you know if there are any yidaki that are bass that are a few hundred dollars American?
@Mixed_Activist traditional yidaki tend to not be this low. I have two awesome yucca didgeridoos from Pamela Mortensen, @didgegirl6. She might have or be able to make one in your price range.
Stirring the primal void!!You do justice to the sorcerers pipe and the voice of creation.Thank you Jen!!!
Thank you sooo much for the nice words. The low notes are my happy place. 🥰
Good commitment with your assistant, to play it obsessively. Go for it!
The Bears really do help me play and practice! 🐻🥰
Hi Jen Fellow Didg player here. What are the consonants and vowels of the riff or wobble you are playing on this particular post.Usually have a good ear for others techniques but this one evades me and I do love it!!
@JamesTruett-d3o It's a rhythm that I extracted from something much more complicated by Dubravko. Three lines of 11 beats. The sound motifs are Dum'; dee ; tk; wk; and t-tg. Each of those is the same length so the t-tg is fast for me. Can you work out what I'm playing from that?
@@JennDidge Thank You Jen for the breakdown of the technique.Yes I can work with the instructions you so kindly posted.Wishing us all the best on our mystical magical journey with didgeridoo. Some aboriginal tribes call the didgeridoo "The voice of Creation"Such a powerful instrument. You are inspiring.
Yesss.Greetings Fellow Didg player.65 going on66 this December and still going strong.Been playing since 1997 and you and I and many others prove there is not a cut off date and time in ones life for playing didgeridoo.Still getting gigs and recording with my brightest friend and student. You play wonderfully .Thank you for posting your Didg playing.Greatly inspiring.Proud to state my first teacher was an incredible player and a strong woman.
Thank you so much for this lovely comment. My apologies for it not showing up immediately. So far I'm better at playing didgeridoo than I am at working the youtube platform. 😂
Nice groove👍
Thank you!
Can you show the written pattern? That is always my biggest obstacle. ❤
Can you make a guess at it? I'll write it down later but it's a great exercise for you to try first. 📋
dom' d-dom' dir di dom' dee. 1&2 & d 45 6 7 8. That is the first dom starts on 1; the d is on & (the offbeat) before 3; second dom is on 3; dir is two beats starting on 4; di is on 6; dom is on 7; dee is on 8.
You're online ❤
Our Teacher talked me into it! 🤣
Youre so sunny💛
Playing didgeridoo brings me (and my bears) joy. 😊
Good relaxing scenario. I do not unsderstand the question, but I am terrible with this. I was recording a video, but I clipped a lot XD
The snow was beautiful while it lasted. It's been raining since then. ☔️ The rhythm is 33 beats long. I don't expect most people naturally look for that kind of rhythmic pattern. 🤣 But there are some repeating themes.
@@JennDidge I would like to know how you prepare your blank sheet before composing. Is like a grid?
Yessss that's what I was looking after buuum buum bum
Whee! Thank you! 🥰
Is there a polar bear passing by at some point, but we must carefully observe the video? Otherwise,a really nice background track!
Count the falling snowflakes.
Thank you for the nice comment!
Great how you mastered those low keys. As you been nearly only on masterclass able to play that C#1 dual didge 🎉. Seems like practising has some useful effects 😅
Very pleasant! Super nice. I also loved the end, nice ending and finish ❤❤
Yeah, thats low! ❤
yess! I can hear you are having fun! Nice one
@DidgePen Thanks! How does your playing change when you choose Playful as your motivation?
@@JennDidge yess thats it 😃
🤗
Yeah, you did it 🎉 I was working on your playalong yesterday. It's coming the next days...
Thank you! This was hard work. 😅 I want to keep going with it so having a playalong from you would be wonderful. 🙏
Really SOLID. Putting accents to the T in line 3 will make it more punchy and recognizable. Just push the beginning of each articulation.
Oh, thank you kind Sir! 🙏 I hear what you mean and will attempt to obey. 😁
