If unconscious and on your back, it can block your airway, but unless your nose is blocked, your tongue blocking airway is not life threatening, pulling the tongue out would only unblock air way if you continue to hold the tongue. It’s simply safer to roll someone on to their side. Swallowing your tongue is literally impossible, an urban myth

Swallowing your tongue is an urban myth - you can't - it's attached to the base of your oral cavity. When unconscious and on your back however, the tongue being quite large can settle onto the back of your throat blocking your airway because you are not conscious to control it. The solution? - protect the neck by keeping it a neutral position and gently roll the person on their side using several people. Then the tongue is shifted away from the back of the throat. Easy. But the neck (spinal cord) can be injured also whenever head injury occurs - makes sense yeah? - its what attaches your head to the body after all. So close control of the head and neck when turning on the side is essential. Having the neck and head in a neutral position also prevents the airway from being occluded (blocked off) when the head is bent all the way forward. Never stick your fingers in their mouth like this player did either even though he meant well. You will likely stimulate what's called a vagal response when the player gags on your fingers.
