The decision to use the same CPU in this new camera is highly disappointing and feels like a disservice to A1 customers. This upgrade does not justify the $3,000 price tag, as it offers no significant improvements in video codecs or write speeds. The current CPU overheats too quickly, causing bottlenecks that prevent 8K60 video recording and the CF-A Gen 4 write speeds required for 4K240. Personally, I have never had issues with the autofocus of my A1 since day one. My primary frustration has been Sony’s continued emphasis on firmware support for models like the a7C and A7IV, while neglecting their flagship devices. This approach is something I would not expect from competitors like Canon or Nikon, who prioritize their flagship models over entry-level ones. As a dedicated Sony Professional and A1 owner since its launch, I am disheartened by the direction the company seems to be heading. I predict that Sony will introduce a new CPU in the a7V next year, along with extensive firmware updates that they will refuse to implement in the A1ii. Sony will likely claim the A1ii’s older chip can’t handle the improvements, citing the a7V's more efficient and less heat-prone CPU, which will support higher video codecs for B-roll and 8K footage-yet again, leaving their loyal A1 users behind.

The Sony A1 Mark 2 doesn't have 8K 60 or 120fps.....

I own the A1 x2 but to have long operating times I have added a dual battery grip to each which cost , at list price with second battery an additional $465 so that places the A1 II at $6974. That still $675 mor than Canon’s EOS R1. I guess the additional cost is related to increased resolution sensor? Thank you and take care.

It's 5.1k GBP here in the UK (tax included) it's kinda inflated by all bog-standard market sellers. But most people see it as the A7RIII pro users only ''upgrade'' path and it is what ill get to replace my kit unless the A7RV is magic It's not being compared to the 1DX MK3 it's the R5 that everyone is really bashing it for the price point to future set wise and if the R3 is sub 5k then well...

Yeah, I saw the same thing. I agree with you, it's not too much money. It's about right. I think the reason why they ignore similarly priced cameras from other manufacturers, is that these same youtubers don't consider Sony cameras professional grade and they see those other cameras as professional grade. Which really just shows their brand loyalty more than anything else. I try to avoid such reviewers.

Truth! Thanks for calling them out. The A1 wipes the floor with the D6 and 1DX III. It's so powerful that Canon and Nikon went into damage control by announcing a "development" for the Z9 and R3. LOL.

maybe you've rethought this video sinice we've gotten more info on the camera, but I've got to say you are very wrong. a7 iii is incredible for the price and would be the best hybrid ever made if they could get rid of the 30 min video limit. you're a sony user so obviously the rec. limit isn't a huge issue, but it is to me and I'm STILL buying the a7 iii.

I think you made this video a little too soon, because now that they’ve announced the actual specs on the a7iii, which are much better than we were reading on the various rumor sites, it looks like a game changer. If it had come spec’d like the Canon 6Dii, or wasn’t much improved over the a7ii, , then I’d agree, there’s no real need. But with how they’ve spec’d this camera, it looks like a home run. Whether people thought it was needed or not, Sony hit it on the head with this one and there’s no other full frame camera that comes close at this price.

Ah. I see, this was made before the release information of A7III. Well, now do you get it? A9's autofocus system, dual cart slots, improved ISO performance and a manageable file size for event shooters that are taking hundreds or even thousands of shots per gig. Plus, it's all under $2k, meaning pro wedding/event photographers can more easily afford 2 bodies. If anything I'm kind of bummed that I just bought an RIII 2 months ago. Oh well, still getting the III as a second body.

It is simple. A7 III will be camera for Wedding photographers, who need to buy 2 cameras, need 2 cards slots, good AF and something around 20 MPX. A9 is to expensive, a7r produces huge images which are pain to edit when You have thousands of them.

There are so many reasons, Tony, and it should be clearer now with the announcement. I can think of: 1. Sony A7 III will be an entry-level FF camera to compete with Nikon D610, D750, and Canon 6D Mark II. 2. Sony A7 III can serve as backup camera to a professional photographer's that is using A9 or A7R III. The A7 III is announced with dual SD cards. Compare this to a Canon 5D Mark IV shooter falling back to a Canon 6D Mark II (with only a single SD). Sony sounds like a very rational choice. 3. Let's call the A7, A7 II, and A7 III the "Balanced" series between S & R. This A7 III is more of a "true" balanced camera than it's predecessors. In terms of AF points (Contrast and Phase detection) , ISO, and Megapixel count (although, I would have thought they'd go for a 36MP to be higher than Canon's 6D Mark II 4. Sony probably did not need a lot of R&D to make this camera due to the similarity between the A7 and A9 cameras. So they don't really need to sell that many camera because the A7R III and a future A7S III would typically be their main money makers. They just need to sell enough to stick it to Canon & Nikon, and getting people to switch over to the Sony system.
