How to Spray Baste a Quilt
Просмотров 7662 года назад
If you haven't tried spray basting a quilt, you've been missing out! I love spray basting because it's fast and easy. And if crawling on the floor isn't your thing, try this on a large table, or even hanging up! The spray that I am using is Odif 505 Temporary spray. After trying many, 505 is my favorite but of course find whatever works best for you. I've heard of quilters using elmers glue spr...

    I heavily starched my fabric, ironed it to crispness, then ran it through the printer with no problem. I used Word to create the label message and printed as usual for paper.

    Are you using an inkjet printer for this? (If the ink cartridges are under $30, it's an inkjet). I can't imagine it's a laser jet? (As someone who used to sell toner and married a copier salesman, these are things someone like me thinks of 🤣). I have a laser jet, and I don't want to ruin it; it's an expensive printer... But I would consider buying a cheesy inkjet at the thrift store to try this out. This is a great idea!

    • @quiltdstudios
      @quiltdstudios Год назад

      Yes - this is an inkjet, I don't think a laser printer would work. I would definitely recommend trying it on a less expensive printer because a few of mine always get jammed, which is awful haha Some people have great luck with using those sheets of fabric printer paper that you can pick up at craft stores.

  • @cameoclinton1093

    I use printer sticker sheets, they stick beautifully to the fabric. You can usually buy it quite cheaply at dollar stores.

    If I use embroidery floss instead of pearl cotton would I use all the strands? I couldn’t find pearl cotton to match.

    • @quiltdstudios
      @quiltdstudios Год назад

      I've never attempted embroidery floss but I imagine it's similar enough, you can all of the strands but that might be harder to pull through your binding, I'd probably go with half or 3/4 and see how easy it is to sew, let me know how it goes!

    Have you ever run into having your threads break while quilting? A couple of years ago we made 7 kids halloween quilts and spray basted, and honestly I didn't think I over sprayed, but the threads broke every 12" or so. Finally we inquired with Bernina and they said the spray was a problem and we needed to use a thread conditioner which worked. I've been hesitant ever since. Thank you!

    • @quiltdstudios
      @quiltdstudios Год назад

      I have had threads break, which is super annoying in the middle of the project! I try not to use a ton of spray, and I change my needle a few times during big projects.

    Does your treatment of the material with Rit prevent the label from fading if it is washed?

    • @quiltdstudios
      @quiltdstudios Год назад

      Great question, it will fade a little when washed but I've found that the dye fixative really helps maintain it over time. So it may lose the original printed crispness but everything will still be visible on the tag. For quilts that you'll wash a lot, maybe consider applying a few layers of vinegar or fixative (ironing in between) and letting the ink really set for a few weeks before washing, I hope this helps!

    • @quiltdstudios

      Yes! Totally normal, and it's the worst! If it keeps happening, you may need to use a different printer (still ink) OR buy those fabric sheets that are meant for the printer. Keep me updated on how it goes!

    Jessica, what is the vinegar ratio, ie vinegar and water or 100% vinegar?

    • @quiltdstudios
      @quiltdstudios 2 года назад

      Good question, 100% vinegar and I had success with a new technique, I got another piece of fabric wet with vinegar and laid it on top of the labels and pushed down until it just barely soaked through, it didn't cause any bleeding! This is after I heat set the labels with an iron for like five minutes!

    • @quiltdstudios
      @quiltdstudios 2 года назад

      Hello! Great question - this is white sherpa backing, for thicker sherpas, I usually don't use batting. For thinner minky backings, I still use batting (80/20 cotton poly), I hope that helps!
