Edward Taylor plays 'Pro Defunctis' from 7 Improvisations by C. Saint-Saëns
This is the sixth Improvisation from the set of seven by Camille Saint-Saëns' Op. 150. ‘Pro defunctis’ quotes the gregorian chant theme from the Offertory of the Requiem, Domine Jesu Christe. It is one of three of the Improvisations that uses gregorian chant, something that Saint-Saëns had not done in his compositions since his Opus 4 Mass and Opus 8 duos.

Edward Taylor plays Rowley: Hymn prelude on 'St Hugh'
Просмотров 3676 месяцев назад
This is the first of four hymn preludes on Lent hymn tunes by the British composer Alec Rowley. The melody of 'St Hugh' is usually sung to the words: Lord, teach us how to pray aright. The melody is presented very slowly in the pedals below some lush harmonies in the hands. Alec Rowley designed all of his music to present different challenges to his students. This piece has sudden changes of ke...

Neils Gade lived in the mid to late 19th century and was seen to be the most important Danish composer of his time. His three pieces for organ (Moderato - Allegretto - Allegro) stand among many compositions for many different genres of music but have a real place in amongst the repertoire of Europe. The final Allegro is lively and energetic throughout with quick semi quaver figurations often in...

Просмотров 72210 месяцев назад
Kenneth Leighton started his musical career as a chorister at Wakefield cathedral during the 2nd World War. He went on to have a career as a composer and pianist via the University of Oxford and wrote much music for the church, both for solo organ and also for choir and organ. The Fanfare dates from 1966 and was a commission by Oxford University Press for the album, Easy Modern Organ Music: Six...
Edward Taylor plays: Willan - Prelude on 'Slane': At the end of the day
Просмотров 45410 месяцев назад
Healey Willan sets the tune Slane in a peaceful and melodic chorale prelude which he subtitles 'At the end of the day'. This prelude is seen as suitable for the service of All Souls Day. The accompaniment is on the swell strings throughout. Stanzas 1 and 3 of the tune are at tenor pitch played on the strings of the solo organ with stanzas 2 and 4 being played on the choir flute. The tune only a...
Edward Taylor plays: Van Oortmerssen - 'For all the Saints'
Просмотров 39210 месяцев назад
This short Chorale Prelude is the last of the Five chorale preludes published by Tactus in 1995. It is based on the hymn tune Sine Nomine by Ralph Vaughan Williams which is suitable for All Saints Day (November 1st) or All Saints Sunday. This hymn tune is upbeat and majestic, but Van Oortmerssen chooses to set it in a more subdued style. The tune is heard, in an augmented form, in the right han...
Edward Taylor plays Alcock :12 short introductory voluntaries No 1

Sir Walter Galpin Alcock (1861- 1947) was an English organist and composer. He held a number of important posts as an organist, playing at the coronations of three monarchs. He was also professor of organ at the Royal College of Music, London. This piece is marked Andante and despite its title of 'introductory' this piece is definitely a multi-use work, suitable for almost any occasion. Startin...

Alan Spedding wrote it for Jackson's 90th birthday concert at York Minster which is now published in the volume 'Fanfare for Francis' which contains all the new works written for that concert. The piece has echoes of J. S. Bach in its style with a spritely accompaniment and continuo style bass much...
Edward Taylor plays Festival March on St George by P. E. Fletcher
Просмотров 60711 месяцев назад
Percy Fletcher spent most of his musical career working in London West End theatres such as Drury Lane and his output for church or recital by way of organ music is quite small. His most well-known work for the organ is the Festival Toccata, found elsewhere on my channel, but this piece is rather fun too. St George’s Windsor is the tune sung to the harvest hymn words ‘Come, ye thankful people, ...
Edward Taylor plays Boëllmann: Suite Gothique - Toccata
Просмотров 81111 месяцев назад
The Suite Gothique is the most well-known of Boëllmann’s works. It is made up of four movements, the last of which is 'Toccata'. Unlike most French toccatas, which start on the full organ in dramatic and joyful style, this one starts in a dark mood on the closed full swell. The first subject is stated in the pedals in the tonic key before the second subject appears this time in the manuals on a...

The Suite Gothique is the most well-known of Boëllmann’s works. It is made up of four movements, the third of which is 'Prière à Notre-Dame'. This is a very peaceful movement, as the title may suggest, utilising the strings and flutes of the organ. Performed on the organ of Carlisle Cathedral.

I love this piece too and am learning at present - hoping to play it in November, so I have got some time. I think the seemless changes between the sections is going to be quite hard to achieve.

I have always preferred this to the other one. I wonder who notices that he brings in the same tune in the build up that Walford Davies uses in Jesu dulcis memoria, that concludes the collection.
