Quetico Falls Chain Flood - June 7, 2022
This is an excerpt from a 3 week trip to Quetico in late May and early June of 2022 making my way to the Falls Chain for the first time. Water levels were quite high and at historic levels in many areas. I came in from Wet Lake and travelled upstream through Bald Rock Fall to the first Four Falls portage. I had originally planned to go all the way to Saganagons Lake and spend a night, but with the water so high I was a bit nervous and decided to turn downstream to make sure I could get to Kawnipi Lake.

Просмотров 9532 года назад
Welcome Back! Here it is, after a huge delay, the 4th and final episode of my 2016 canoe trip through Quetico Provincial Park. I begin this episode by re-tracing my route through the B-chain to Spend a night on Pickerel Lake. From there, I head west through Pickerel Narrows to Batchewaung Lake and spend the night, then carry on the next day to finish my trip at the Nym Lake access point. Enjoy!
Wolves vs. Elk in Yellowstone

We heard a splash in the river next to our campsite and decided to have a look. Coming from just upstream was an elk swimming in the river and 4 wolves, two on each side. The video tells the story. Eventually they all got a little too close to us and we had to move from behind a tree. The wolves saw us and immediately disengaged. I don't believe the elk ever saw us.

I did an 11 day trip to Quetico Provincial Park in northern Ontario for a solo canoe trip in 2016. This trip was on the heels of another longer trip south of the border, so I decided to take it somewhat easy, not travelling too far each day. I paddled a figure 8 loop starting at Stanton Bay on Pickerel Lake travelling south venturing as far as Sark Lake. I made my way back north eventually retr...

In part 4, I make my way south on Kenoji Lake and find a good campsite near the Ogoki River inflow. The next day I make my way up the series of portages on the Ogoki River to Wabakimi Lake, then find a good camp on Lower Wabakimi Lake. Realizing I still have plenty of time on this trip, I take it easy and travel downstream a short distance from Lower Wabakimi Lake and find another wonderful cam...

I made my way to Wabakimi Provincial Park in northern Ontario for a solo canoe trip in 2017. Three of us paddled from Toston to Townsend, Montana on a spectacular December day to check on reports of trash in the river from construction of the new 287 bridge below Toston. Norm Miller and Jim Emmanuel and myself had a fleet of decked canoes including a Kruger Sea Wind, a wood Sea Wind and a Clipper Sea 1. We were able to get a few bags of mostly plastic water bottles in the first mile be...
Breakneck Bear

We hiked into Breakneck meadows in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in mid-June for a couple nights. A few miles upstream from Breakneck Meadow we ran into this big fellow. From a distance we thought he was a griz because of the color, but we quickly realized he's a black bear, and a big one.

Nautiraid Raid 460 Kayak Assembly Instructions
Verlan, circa 1922♥ One of the best oarsman and designers of our time.
I have done 6+ canoe trips on portions of the Churchill River. I started in 1996 (+,-). Early on, the portages were in good shape. But my last couple of trips, slightly before COVID, I found the portages much more difficult, mainly because they were not well used, and therefore, not well maintained by the users. I did encounter someone on Lac LaRonge who said he had written a book on canoeing the Churchill River, but had not encountered anyone else doing canoeing for several years. At the time I felt highly complimented by him, but then I learned there was a downside of his compliment - the portages were much more difficult then than in the 1990s. Beavers can be big part of the portage problem when they are not used. On one or two occasions my portages were obliterated by beavers building dams and swamping the area that makes the possibility of the portage highly questionable - I have turned back a couple of times for fear of a broken leg when going through a "swamp" area with wood fall on the "ground" under my feet in the water.
Did I hear ‘Yours Is No Disgrace’ by YES ar the beginning??
Close! It's Jethro Tull, Cheap Day Return. Early 70's prog rock.
Would it help to have wheels for the portages between Pine House and Missinipe
Very cool trip! The leeches in the first video were pretty gross! Looks like the weather cooperated and you certainly covered some beautiful country. Thanks for sharing.
😊
Hi Mark. Every year I return to this series as it's so peaceful. I plan to do a very similar route with one side trip. Can I ask the length of your Kite? Is it the 14' 8"
47 portages. Did you do any training for this or just go for it?
Thank you for posting this with the detailed route, I was wanting to do this exact route in mid May but wasn’t sure how long it would take. I just pulled my permit and am going to go for it! Can’t wait!
Dogbrain, it seems that if you use that much oil to deep fry the fish, you must be recollecting and using it later. Is that true? What oil do you use?
Thanks for making these videos.
Dogbrain, how did you edit the maps with the red lines, and camp 1 into the video?
Looks so peaceful
loved this...... just wow! heading there for my first solo this September just wondering if it was crowded or how many campsites were full when you were there?
Quetico is such a beautiful park.. ive been there 5 times the fishing is great and theres so much to see in this park that you probbaly couldnt see the whole park in a lifetime this beauty is just scratching the surface ive never seen this part of the park its so big and theres so much of this in there its amazing a canadian paradise. And American too tehy share the lower half. so many lakes, and streams and water and fish and wildlife this is what things look like when untouched by humans.. tehres probably places well there is places in this park that no person has ever been its that big and remote.
I really enjoy your videos! I was wondering what maps you used for Wabakimi? Appreciate this video showing how you got into the wilderness.
Beautiful video. Love Wabakimi. Who’s the guitarist in the soundtrack?
I’ve been through that portion of Pickerel and Batch quite a few times. Good fishing throughout. Caught my largest Northern Pike (45”) just outside Pickerel Narrows. I thought you’d show the climb on the portage from Batch to Nym. Nice video, nice canoe. Did you build that cedar stripper?
Heading there next year on my first solo trip, this really inspired me….. thank you….. One question though, what time of year was this again?
Thank's for some good videos. I have dropped a few channels because they mispronounce portage constantly, but there are only so many decent canoe vid's and winter is long in Canada, so you can continue as you will. It is a cultural word to me though, and I would never go to Mexico and mispronounce a culturally significant word. Not if I expected them to watch.
Thanks so much for posting this. Best walk through if the falls chain I have seen. I plan to come through June 1 of this year and it’s looking like another late ice out and potentially high water year!!!
We ended up routing differently to avoid the falls area in July last year. Water levels were still a concern. Was a bummer since I really wanted to do the Man Chain and then back up North on the Falls chain. Still had a great trip just went through Kahsahpiwi back north instead.
The good side ? You didn't have to portage a long distance ! Thanks for sharing !
Crazy flow but verry beautiful. I assume the fishing was off due to the high water levels? Cheers!
Nice to see that part of the park in that high water. Amazing amount of water flowing through there.
Beautiful! I was nearby overlanding with the off grid RV, half the roads north of 17 were flooded. I was dreaming about leaving all the machinery behind and taking off in the canoe the whole time.
A very nice watch. Little bit of everything with minimal gear. Really sets the mood for a Quetico Adventure! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
When videos are this good ? It's a pleasure to rewatch ! Yeah a year later I know, but a great way to enjoy a Friday evening ! We have conversed several times about our strippers. I forgot if you double layered the bottom of this one ? A Raven ? Thanks !
Thanks again Jim. Yes, double layered bottom on the Kite. Both layers were e-glass, but I've built a number of canoes since then and now use a 4oz s-glass layer on the outside. Much more resistant to abrasion and denting.
I hope to be on Pickerel next year. Never been there. I accidentally caught my first two ever lake trout on Quetico lake last year. I guess I should try for some on pickerel. My tip of the day is to try Krusteaz pancake mix.
Yes, I would say most of my fish are caught by accident, so you should do well on Pickerel.
Really like your stuff. 👍👍
I appreciate that!
It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thanks 😊
Thanks Tyler. Good luck on your big adventure.
Cool series! I have enjoyed watching!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much for a most delightful adventure. You do an excellent job on all aspects of your videos. My trips are usually in late July/early August. Nice and warm but stable flies and mosquitoes can be a bit much. Thinking about late August or early September like your trip and wondering if these pests have significantly subsided by then? And I reckon water columns must be turning over as the lake trout seemed plentiful.
Yes, Most bugs are usually gone by then, but depending on rain and temperatures they can come back at a lower level. I seem to always catch Lake Trout in Pickerel and Batchewaung Lakes regardless of season.
I was wondering if you were going to finish that trip. Nice Lake Trout, and some great footage. Makes me long for a Spring trip next year. Thanks.
I catch Lake Trout every time I paddle through Pickerell and Batchewaung Lakes.
If you are going to be there late May into June. Try using a Rebel teeny pop-r . The bass are spawning right next to shore. Cast it in as close to shore as possible and let it sit. Then give it a twitch or short pop. If the water temps are just right and you can find calm water. You can catch them from 5am until 10 pm
Pickerel Lake...I'll bet you were dying to call that Walleye Lake ;-) I've been waiting for this last instalment for awhile and you didn't disappoint. There's an overall peacefulness to your narration, and I really enjoy your editing style. Thanks kindly for sharing another enjoyable adventure. Quick question: what is the song title for the piece at the end of this video? I believe you've used it a few times on other videos..very peaceful
Thanks for the kind words. I don't know the title or artist of that short piece. It came from a long compilation I pulled off of RUclips, and it was only the end of one tune. I wish I knew the original source.
Such a beautiful watercraft
Thansk for the compliment
Dear Dogbrain, do you still make the Seawind design? or is it still made? thanks and happy 2023
The original Kevlar Kruger Seawind canoe is no longer made, but you can buy the plan to make a similar canoe called the Northwind by JEM Watercraft. This is obviously a copy of the Seawind with a different cockpit opening and less interior volume. I was lucky enough to have a genuine Seawind at hand for my build.
Fantastic video, thanks for posting this.
What a great trip. Loons, a big old white pine, beautiful sunsets - thanks for sharing.
Beautifully done… 👍👍
What a beautiful journey through some of the most incredible country to be found anywhere.
moving day. no big deal i guess. lol
I strongly dislike that 360 out of Tuscarora. Did it with 4 dogs solo in 2009.
Great series!
Nice!...I'll pop this up on the Friends of Wabakimi page
Very nice video. I enjoyed seeing the country. Thanks
Wow, nice video, I have not been up there.
All so beautiful, thank you. Time alone in my canoe is some of my favorite, even a few hours is so great.
