I think the thing with the "and another with spots" part is to show how ultimately people with this kind of ideology eventually come for everyone. I think some context of this album has been lost. During WWII there were a not insubstantial group of people in the UK that supported the Nazis. After the war there was a lot of genuine fear that those people might seize power. I think The Wall is on one level speaking to that fear, while also diving into the psychology of the sort of person that ended up in that faction. How due to traumas some people react by building an emotional wall and cutting themselves off from compassion and humanity. And they can become truly dangerous stewing in themselves. Pink Floyd was speaking to the fear of those people while also blaming the failings of the UK's education system (where teachers regularly hit children and were super strict) and society for creating these people. A lot of people with depression have a very emotional relationship with this album. Walling off our emotions to deal with trauma is basically what depression is, so it can really speak to people on that front (even if all the Nazi stuff one would typically need to gloss over if experiencing it that way). My brother can't listen to Pink Floyd anymore because this album was the music he listened to regularly during his darkest times and he doesn't want to go back there. The Wall is also super popular in post-soviet countries I think because of the cultural memory of having to keep all of your emotions and opinions hidden while under an oppressive regime.

Bands like Sonic Youth, MGMT, and Animal Collective helped continue what Syd Barrett started. “Piper” is the best Pink Floyd album to me, by far. “Interstellar Overdrive” is like listening to a piece of music by Stravinsky or Bartok or Thelonius Monk.

This is based on the animals in 'Animal Farm'. And the various classes of people in society as represented by pigs, sheep and dogs. When you got to the Pigs part, it wasn't about competing businessmen anymore, like in Dogs. It's about the politically powerful. And sheep are the masses that go along with the other two classes, and get shoved around.

23:24 What you are hearing is backward voices that say "Hello Luka. Congratulations, you have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink. Care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont." when played backwards. Apparently they would get letters from people saying they were hearing secret messages in their music so they decided to put one in this song. You can find it on youtube, look for "young lust backmasking"

Leave it to Pink Floyd to make a disco beat sound good! (We don't need no education, Young Lust etc.) As an old man I can tell you I'm not often impressed by folks from your generation. YOU impress the hell out of me. Looking up words you don't know to improve yourself and having the initiative and drive to do the whole RUclips grind is refreshing to see! Keep it up, you'll go far. Might I suggest side 1 of Rush 2112? It also tells a whole story and has some EPIC music and transitions. Stay well my friend.

Roger Waters was born in 1943, two years before WWII ended, and Britain got whacked pretty hard. It's estimated that more than 12,000 metric tons of bombs were dropped on London and nearly 30,000 civilians were killed by enemy action. So the members of Pink Floyd were born to traumatized people, educated by more traumatized people, etc. I can imagine Britain in the 1950s being like a powder keg, with the older generations trying to hold tight to a world that no longer existed and the younger generation roiling away under dominating, over protective mothers and teachers who taught by rote and beat them when they step out of the very narrow lines. So when the 1960s rolled around the counterculture exploded and in our story out popped Pink. The wall Pink built around himself was originally for protection from people like his mom, who was always up in his business, and teachers who mocked and ridiculed him (in the song Nobody Home, Pink sings, "I've got a little black book with my poems in...", and in the movie a teacher picks up a little black book he's writing in and mocks what he's written, which happen to be the lyrics for the song Money). But what started out as Pink's self-protective isolation became detrimental social isolation and he alienated those around him, like his wife. At the end of Young Lust, Pink, who is often away from home on tour, banging groupies out of boredom and loneliness, makes a collect call to his wife back home in the UK and a man answers. He now knows that his wife is moving on, and given some of the lyrics in One of My Turns, who can blame her? And Pink's mental breakdown accelerates *-* and he's in his own head, not talking to the girl he brought back to his room, he just zones out until he starts thrashing the room and she runs away. (👈🏽My profile pic [as well as one of my PF tattoos] is from the Empty Spaces animation in the movie, the song that immediately precedes Young Lust). Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ (1917 - 2020) was an English singer and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during World War II. She is honorifically known as the "Forces' Sweetheart", having given outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India and Burma during the war as part of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). One of the songs most associated with her is "We'll Meet Again". Spots are acne. - In the Flesh (reprise) People who are socially isolated can experience higher levels of stress, be confused about where reality ends and imagination begins, and distort time, all of which can trigger psychotic episodes, especially in those who have an underlying mental health condition such as schizophrenia and/or, as in the case of Pink, drug use. So now he has these weird fascist ideas marching around in his head. He'd shut himself off from anyone who could reflect sanity back to him. In the end Pink seems to do what very few do, which is to face the judgmental voices in his head: The schoolmaster saying, "I always said he'd come to no good In the end your honor. If they'd let me have my way I could Have flayed him into shape. But my hands were tied, The bleeding hearts and artists Let him get away with murder. Let me hammer him today." And we see where the image of the hammer originated. The mother who "might let him sing" but certainly wasn't going to let him fly is wailing about Pink leaving her and asking the judge to let her take him home, presumably so she can re-impose the control she had in his youth on him. The mother who was going to protect him from all the "dirty" women who, in the end, he sought out. Then there's the judge's condemnation. And Pink somehow comes to the realization that he not only built the wall himself, but that he can get out of it as well, and wonders if there's a door. And remember back in Hey You he said, "Don't tell me there's no hope at all". Maybe hope's the secret, I don't know. The last song seems to be Pink realizing that there were people who loved him all along who'd been trying to reach him, those same bleeding hearts and artists the teacher mentioned earlier with such sneering contempt. It's not always those you think should care about you who actually do, and sometimes your real family isn't the family you were born into but those you find along the way. He also acknowledges his understanding of how difficult it's/he's been for them, "And when they've given you their all Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy Banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall." And again back in Hey You, Pink has the realization that "together we stand, divided we fall." It takes a little while to sink in but he gets it in the end. The last words on the album, "Isn't this where...", take us right back to the beginning, "....we came in?" Life's stuggles never end, but hopefully next time they come around again you've learned something from the previous time(s), and each time will be easier. (When there is a break between songs rather than a smooth transition to the next one it's the end of a side on the album, which has four sides.) 🤘🏽💗🖖🏽

Hey Dude, IN THE FLESH is not about specific racist ideologies, he's highlighting everyone else that is not him is the problem " and another with spots " well there is nobody who has spot, point being he has issue with the whole world. And remember, this is fiction, Roger is trying to illustrate that people who fail to connect with the world will ultimate grow to hate the world, it's not mean't to be literal or racist specific, it's more like satire.

  • @jimangela4589

Like Dark Side, this album is an endless loop, and given the voice at the very beginning and the very end it gives the impression that it is a movie. The movie though is playing over and over inside the head of the main character, named Pink. As Roger sings at the beginning of the album, we the audience are invited into Pink's head to witness his justification for shutting himself off from the outside world, i.e., behind a wall. Waters has said 75% of the album is his own experiences, 15% that of Syd Barrett and 10% a "John Bonham" type. The dichotomy though is striking because the Syd Barrett's of the world use these hurdles to justify living their lives as a recluse. In as much as these are mostly Roger's experiences, he did not allow them to defeat him. The Wall is the tragic tale of a character who allows his misfortunes to get the better of him. Don't be this guy. Don't let the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune defeat you. The first half of the album sets up each "brick" that eventually walls off our main character. After the introduction the "film" starts with a German plane dropping the bomb that killed Roger's father at the battle of Anzio during World War II 5 months after Roger was born. Roger grew up fatherless. Other bricks are presented as an oppressive school system, a protective mother, German bombers bombing cities in England and sexual excess leading to relationship issues. The second half of the album though is the real mind f*ck. This is all stream of conscience, one image leading to another in succession. Pink, having completely isolating himself is at the mercy of his own mind that is not going to be so easily contained. His mind having "awakened" itself through the device of a doctor providing uppers, takes off to some of the darkest and craziest shit imaginable only to catch himself and through mental self flagellation concedes that the wall must come down. As the album seems to end it starts again as if to hope for a more accepting end. It never does.

@@OCG_Silver it the band Tool. Start with the album Opiate then Undertow. Do them the same way you’ve done Floyd. They are an awesome group. Enjoy!✌️

Also in the context of the album, Comfortably Numb is about Pink ODing in his hotel room, his manager pulls up and is tight bc he’s supposed to be performing a show, so he has a doctor shoot pink up with uppers which allow him to perform, so hes “comfortably numb” because he’s heavily medicated. This plus “the worms eating his brain” are what make him become facist. It’s ironic he turns to facism considerings its what killed his father, the incident which began building the wall.

Was waiting for this one, wanted to point out the motif you hear at 35:44, thats the tune of another brick in the wall. (we dont need no, education) You hear this motif throughout the album whenever pink shows emotion, or resists against his self imposed isolation. So in the context of hey you, he’s calling out for help but the wall is to high, and no one can hear him, but the oppressive motif of the wall pops up, showing that it controls him, and wont let go.

You have to experience more of this concert - "Sorrow" (don't miss that one!), "High Hopes', "Keep Talking" - so great!

I guess no one's told you yet? You NEVER pause during a Gilmour solo!!!

Yes, remember - Floyd formed in 1965; by the time of this concert they'd been together for 30 years! (essentially - there were some member changes over time, but that's a whole other story) Check out the size of the crowd; it tells you so much about how much this band is loved, by fans who were with them at the start, as well as the fans they picked up over the years. Like Mozart, they'll be playing Floyd 200 years from now!

Thats a 2000 years old amphiteather on the volcannic waste formerly known as Pompeii. They are playing for the ghosts. Legendary stuff.

The Meddle album was released early 1971 and the concert in Pompeii came about purely by chance. A producer or similar was visiting Pompeii and was taken to see the recently excavated Roman ampitheatre. While there, the " producer" was feeling the vibes and atmosphere and thought it would be a good place to stage the Meddle album. Phone calls were made, and Pink Floyd agreed to do a concert / performance there . Surprisingly, the Italian government and Pompeii officials agreed, but with no audience allowed. The whole live rendition of the Meddle album is brilliant, the 2 highlights being Nicks epic drum solo, and the seperate performance of Echoes. This was the NEW Pink Floyd without Syd Barret.....their new sound that led to Dark Side Of The Moon and musical genuis. Performed 1971 Audio / record released 1972 Movie released 1973

For me its more about appreciation for their unique beginnings yk, lets take thebeatles for example, they had to find their footing and inch from classic rock/ folk music into psychedelia, pink floyd BEGAN making psycidelic classic rock, so the novelty of it always appealed to me, syd barrett really was a genius, its crazy to see how their sound evolved
