CLASSICS ARE BETTER
США
Добавлен 4 май 2020
Hi I'm Travis, let's hang out and work on, check out, and celebrate some Classic Cars & Trucks with maybe few modern cars thrown in from time to time. Follow along as myself and friends build some of our own projects vehicles, feature other cool classic rides, & even check out some epic car shows along the way. I aim to show that any one can get out and wrench on a classic, and make their car or truck just a little bit better regardless of your skill level. I am literally a guy wrenching in his backyard shop, if I can do it, any one can! Let's keep them on the road!

Want a Flawless C10 Mirror Install? Check This Out! RIVNUTS
No mirror mounting holes on your classic car or truck? No Problem!! Simple DIY automotive hack for attaching pretty much anything with a bolt to a sheet of metal. In this case, I am using Rivnuts (also known as Nutserts) to attach side view mirrors to my Chevy C10. I had no pre-existing holes to use, this approach really saved me a lot of hassle and was really easy to do. You could use this method on quite a few different items…tool boxes, lockers, boats, etc. Stick around till the very end for some bonus shop dog Cooper footage.

Two things: That's not a "crush" sleeve, it's just a spacer. Crush sleeves are single-use, found only in a few limited applications, and they actually "crush" at a particular torque value. Second, those front cab mounts aren't "time welded". That's how they come from the factory--the washers and bushings are manufactured as a single piece. Otherwise, great video!
You have to give that engine some love. It hasn't been cleaned in ages...
Great video and truck!!!! Heard about linseed oil for my antique lantern.. thanks for your help and keep up the good work 👍👍👍👍 cheers 🦘🦘🦘
I have a 2005 Silverado. I’ve noticed the gauge light dimmer switch doesn’t work since I replaced the cluster with a new LED lit one. Also, the light switch isn’t lit at all with the headlights on at night. Either the switch is bad or I’ve had a mouse eat some wires. That’s one of the issues with living on rural property! I’m going to try replacing the switch first with a new one. I appreciate your help with this video. You got a new subscriber. Edit: I checked your link and got the switch on Amazon for less than $20. I learned from the reviews that GM has a reputation for headlight switches going bad with age. I’m adding fog lights to my truck anyway so now’s the time to replace this switch. Even if the gauge light dimmer doesn’t work, the switch backlight should.
Thanks for the advice. My truck is already patina but i am putting a new cowl hood and need to match. Thanks for the tips! Just wait a month or so for clear coat?
I’ve got a ‘65 C10 that I’ve been wanting to do this to… was great to find another C10 as an example.
Have a 2002 chevy silverado and both my low beams wont turn on. I checked all fuses, relays, pigtails, wiring harness and bulbs. They all work fine. Will this dimmer switch work?
Hmm it seems like you have checked everything I would have thought of myself (bulbs, fuses, relays). When the dimmers go bad, in my experience it mostly effects the inside lights, but if something internal is possibly stuck on the high beams in it or something ground out on the low beams selector, it may fix it. Part is only around twenty or so bucks, its worth a shot after all that other stuff plus it doesn't get dirty, so if it doesn't work just return it. If you try it, please let me know if it works, I am curious now!
looks really good definitely gonna attempt to re create hahaha
Thanks! I hope yours turns out awesome.
Thanks big time for the video on this topic! Gotta do this job on my 2006 LQ4 powered Yukon. Also the noted thought on the crank pulley leak was helpful as I got under to inspect and it looks like mine is leaking in that same spot as well. Any chance you have a video in doing that seal replacement?
Thanks for watching! If your Yukon is 2wd you'll have a lot more room to work, the 4wd gear in the way, was the biggest hassle. Unfortunately I don't have a vid on the crank seal, I have a buddy that's a mechanic in a big time shop on the daily, and he cut me a killer buddy deal to replace the oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and crank seal all at once. Hasn't leaked since.
Thanks for the reply! Appreciate it! Yeah my Yukon is an all whee drive Denali trim with a 6.0 and the AWD components are definitely in the way and I can see that middle 13mm bolt is going to suck….. lol. Working in the crank pulley as we speak and it’s been a challenge for sure. Sounds like your buddy is a good buddy to have handy for jobs like these haha.
@@escaladeboii best of luck on it! Also kudos on wrenching on a AWD 6.0 Denali, that's a badass Yukon!
Thanks mate! Yeah, it’s been a really really fun truck to learn how to be a DIY mechanic on and I’ve owned it for the last 10 years and it’s never left me stranded anywhere. I absolutely love the thing. Bought it with 74K on the odometer in early 2015 and now going on 10 years later, it’s at 206,000 and still runs pretty solid minus a few oil leaks lol just amazes me at how much this truck fits my lifestyle and does everything I need for living in a mountain ski town, towing boats and having all the room in the back of the XL Yukon to carry auto detailing equipment,m. Plus it makes for an awesomely comfortable road trip Rigg and it’s been back-and-forth from southern California to Utah many times in the last five years
Love the truck! Looks awesome. Learned a lot from your videos 👍 thanks! What is your solution for the clear coat? Was going to do the wipe on clear as well but if it isnt good with the spray paint?!?
Thank you! Yea the Poppy's is still on my shelf, they confirmed with me that you can't wipe it on spray paint, it re wets the single stage paint and will smear. I recently ordered some Vice Grip Garage shine juice. Supposedly it's wipe on safe, just doesn't last as long. I plan to have that on an up coming video testing it out.
When I was a kid my dad had a 1953 chev as our everyday drive. It was grey in color and had the clip in wheel wall covers. I think 54 was the last year they had the clip ins.
That would be killer as a daily driver, style everyday!
Hi mate, just wondering what you used as a clear coat, I have a project that i might use some spray paint on and was going to use poppys patina satin as well but now i'm unsure hahaha stitch up is i have already ordered the poppys so i might have to ditch the idea of adding spray paint, any and all help would be appreciated!!! Fyi my car is completely painted already, but was going to scratch it back.
So I didn't use a clear coat yet. The 503 Light Green that I used was a single stage so the clear was sorta mixed in. I ordered some Poppy's myself, but luckily on their instruction it says don't wipe on spray paint. It will re-wet the paint and smear it. Poppy's told me you can spray it on safely. I still have it on the shelf, I ordered some Vice Grip Garage shine juice, its similar but supposedly spray paint safe. Ill be trying it in a future video. Good luck!
@@CLASSICSAREBETTER thanks heaps big dog 💪🏻 I have been following the progress of your C10!! Keen to see a video of it on the road man it’s a sweet ride!!
@@coldspaghetti2001 Thank you, I really appreciate that! It's almost there, been working on it, should have a video with updates next month about getting it street legal, then ROADTRIPS & SHOWS with it this Spring! I'm pumped to finally start enjoying it out and about 👊
good job. looks great great
Thank you!
I’m thinking about doing the sponge method like you did on my existing faded paint on my truck. Black and red oxide/dark brown. Do you think I should wet sand that down to fade it in with the existing paint? Maybe with a scotch brite pad?
That's what I would do, put a little on then scotch brite to match, go a little at a time till you get your method dialed in. Fyi if you let a little paint dry on the sponge before you dab it, seems to speck it on a little better. Good luck, thank you for watching!
@@CLASSICSAREBETTERthank you man! I’m going to give it shot. Looking forward to more videos!
Hello. How long did you wait between coats/bottles? thank you
I did a rough one and a half coats or so and let it dry over night, then sprayed any areas that seemed a little light the next day before I removed all the tape etc.
Hello. How long did you wait between coats/bottles? Thank you
I did a rough one and a half coats or so and let it dry over night, then sprayed any areas that seemed a little light the next day before I removed all the tape etc.
I have a long bed you think this kit will be enough ?
It was close on my short bed, I also did it pretty thick. I would pick up an extra bottle if you plan to do the long bed multiple layers thick. Remember to prep well. Best of luck!
Truck is cool- all the matchie-copper stuff looks cheap/tacky. Too much matchie things on old cars that aren’t totally 100% mod just doesn’t stand the test of time. BUT the truck itself looks awesome. Sorry for being harsh. It’s not my truck I know. But I gotta call it.
Looks awesome. I think I’ll just do the patina pebbles on mine. The bottom’s a little too much for me. Awesome job!
Thanks for watching! Patina pebbles is the best way in my opinion, I would normally had not gone so heavy on the bottom with the sponge if i wasn't filming a DIY. Best of luck on your project!
Excellent video.
Thank you!
Love your videos, I got a 64 Chevrolet pick up with a 350 in it. I had it since I was 16 years old and I’m 53 now. what town are you located?
Thank you for watching! That is awesome that you have been able to keep it all this time! I am up in the North Texas area near Fort Worth.
@ I’m in Brownwood, Texas not too far from here how funny
@@tonymartinez15949 Nice, small world, I am very familiar with Brownwood. Used to dove hunt down there through grade school and college. Maybe I'll see ya out at a GoodGuys show or something.
Looking nice pal, gonna try it on my '53 Jeep CJ
WARNING MUST BE WATCHED MUTED BECAUSE OF INAPPROPRIATE MIND NUMBING VOMIT INDUCING BACKGROUND MUSIC. What is wrong with you people who need your feeble minds constantly inundated with this Tweedledee Tweedledum Ga Ga Pooh background music?
If the worst happens, and you break off the bolt down below the block, Find another bolt, same size same thread count. Put that bolt in a lathe and drill the center out full length. Screw in that bolt with what threads are left in the block. It acts as a dead centering tool. Once you have a hole dead centered, you can start to incrementally getting larger drill bits, until you get to the max size, without cutting any metal from the block. Do not try to center the drill bit by eyeball. It will not be centered and you will create a mess. Then use a good sharp thread tap to get the remaining metal from the threads, and your home free.
Dang that is genius!! Centering by far is the hardest part besides getting a drill physically in the engine bay. Putting this method in my mental tool box, thank you!
Ridiculous that the factory puts Lock Tite on the manifold bolt. Heat loosens Lock Tite. Exhaust manifolds get HOT.
Totally agree, think they just want it secure till the warranty runs out and it's our problem lol.
use velcro for that metal line to snug it up to the lift. Secure and can be moved and removed easily. Stick on velcro
Ooo I like that idea, thank you! Since the video, I have updated to some small magnets that have zip tie loops made in to keep it nice. Besides the lift, it was lifesaver on the under dash wiring. Thanks for the velcro idea though, that hadn't occurred to me and would totally work.
I replace that too and doesnt fix the problem also check the fiuses and there okay
If the switch didn't fix it and it is not a fuse, I would trace your wires, they may have worn through somewhere and are grounding out.
I replaced mine and my dash lights are still dim and the left side is dark. There are no bulbs on the back of the cluster board. Leds soldered in the board. May be the board.
Sorry it didn't work, seems like some one has been messing with your board if there are LEDs soldered in. I would check your local area for a cluster rebuilder, around here you can find them on FB Marketplace, and they can typically modify with LEDs, run tests, etc, sounds like part of the solder is bad or is connecting spots it shouldn't. Best of luck!
Nice ride HOMIE
Thanks man!
Great Vehicle 👍
Thank you!
Love the truck! the copper is a great accent color. Looking forward to the interior upgrades!
Thank you Pete! The interior videos are posted up if you want to see how the interior turned out, I was really pleased with it. Thanks for watching!
I had low mileage 53 Bel-Air as my first car in 1969. It was all black with a three speed manual transmission. It was some first car for a seventeen year old. What I remember, it was big (fit thirteen people in it once). It was slow (shift into 3rd gear around thirty mph.and that was it. Stopping and steering was like being in a boat, turn that big steering wheel and you would gradually come-about, if you didn’t slow down, you didn’t turn. BTW, it had about 26 grease fittings, no oil filter so an oil change was due every 1,000 miles. The vacuum wipers stopped on the uphills. I seemed to have a flat tire every week. The radio killed the battery in three minutes. It was great for the drive in movies (up high & plenty of room). Supposedly the 1953 had full pressure lubrication nevertheless I blew the engine on a nonstop trip from Montreal to NYC. It was pedal to the metal all the way, and when I got home the engine sounded like a coffee grinder. You always remember your first. My next car was 58 Impala (160K miles and the cam went), after that a 64 Impala which the junk yard owner may still be driving.
That was an awesome story to read, thank you for sharing. Sounds like it was an adventure owning one of these back in the day too! Driving Montreal to NYC in one is wild. Thank you so much for watching.
Awesome car
Thank you!

Thanks for the help. My 05 silverado was having the same issue.
Do you know what the paint code is of the green? I had my paint shop mix up the 503 light green GM code we5121 and it looks more minty than yours. Maybe its because you sprayed a lighter coat over a dark base?
Hi, so I did use GM 503 Light Green. I did go very light and it's over a dark surface and has been sanded on, your also seeing it in my shop lights. I had also used a MAE-OMNI acrylic enamel, on my paint can it says OEM CODE: 503 V83E5139,533. Best of luck!
@ Perfect, thank you
Awesome and thanks! Going to do my 64 d100 very similar
A 64 D100 is a super cool rig, good luck!
I was just under my hood looking at a cam sensor leak and noticed a broken exhaust manifold bolt. This happened spontaneously because the motor has never been touched. Doesnt seem to have been leaking there so I'm just going to pretend I didnt notice it
100% if it's not leaking and you don't need it off, don't touch it bro! Save yourself the headache lol.
I can't get either of the airbag springs to release. Any tricks you can give? Great video
I would try an assortment of picks and small screw drivers in those holes on the side. May even spray a quick hit of wd40 in there in case you have some debris wedged in jamming it up. Good luck man!
Dude, those look great! congrats
Thank you!
Your shop is so nice where did you get your building from?
Hi, thanks for watching, I had millersmetalbuildings.com/ build mine a few years ago. Haven't had any issues with it, was a good company to work with.
What about running the engine to get it hot then wrenching on the bokts. Would that help at all?
If you have an aluminum block, maybe, but overall I wouldn't count on it myself as with the block and bolt both heated, they have both expanded.
Heat just the bolt/stud with a fine tip torch to a red color, and put ice on it, without having the ice touch the block. The bolt tries to expand as it is heated, but can't expand. But it can contract when cooled, so it loosens up. works great. Heating the block and the bolt at the same time does not help, in most cases, as the both expand at the same rate.
You'll want some anti-seize on there. Two years from now, you have to drill them out otherwise. We used stainless screws in aluminum rivnuts and still had occasional issues.
Not a bad idea at all, thank you for the heads up!
Great job and great success 😊
Thank you!
