Can't paddle? Just use your imagination
It's mid winter and I'm stuck at home, but that helped me appreciate the virtual paddling community even more. Here's to many adventures on the water in 2025.

In July we were invited to bring our Drascombes to the Red Sails Festival in Portstewart. With very light winds there wasn't much sailing, but the craic was mighty.
Just how far can I push the Itiwit X500?
Просмотров 1 тыс.Месяц назад
The Itiwit X500 is well established as a touring kayak which can keep up with sea kayaks. Check out Patrik's channel at Air on the Water to see an X500 on multi-day trips. But can it cope with waves, tide streams and surf? Let's find out
Paddling an Itiwit x500 to Gola Island
Просмотров 257Месяц назад
The x500 came on holiday with me to West Donegal Ireland. I had a lovely trip past the shipwreck Bade Eddie and out to Gola, which is one of the more accessible offshore islands. This kayak is extremely capable, although I decided not to risk the exposed side of the island, which is littered with jagged reefs.

Haha! Not bad 😂 And you said that a moment on the water is worth more than everything else?
The next best thing is dreaming about sailing
Much belated afterthought David, You might be able to do a video equivalent of Double Tracking ... and re live your favourite past trips. Go paddle along with Yourself for company. That sounds a bit weird I know but you could have several Davids surfing the same Portrush wave 🌊 😂 🙃
Oh, that might be fun
Haha I love it!
Thanks, I almost pinched some of your footage, but wasn't sure if that would work across the cultures.
@ please try! I would love to see it :)
🤣 Reminds me of the Opening credits to The Naked Gun
With authentic dodgy special effects
Fantastic David 😂 and people say I'm crazy lol Don't know how you came up with this but I loved it 👍👍👍👍👍 Happy New Year and hope you get loads of great paddles in 2025 Ps. Bloody good job you had a PFD for this one Hehe 😊
And I had a helmet, that floor was very hard!
Inventive. Home made green screen? Could you paddle across town like that?
Nice idea I could paddle to work
Thanks for the video. I was thinking about maybe buying an X500 how do you feel that it compares in terms of stability compared to Sea Kayaks (or other inflatables) you’ve used? So far I have only used inflatables most of which are quite stable. I’m tempted by the X500 due to its similarities to a hard shell kayak but if it is not stable then I would rather stick with what I have got even if they are slower kayaks.
The x500 performs extremely well in rough/moving water. It cruises well and can keep up with sea kayaks (provided they are not trying to race). Stability is good, no better or worse than any hardshell. It will feel less stable than a low pressure kayak, but they are built flat and wide. The x500s build quality is very poor, they all develop leaks. They are also easy to patch, it's annoying but not a fatal flaw. If you don't need a sit-in kayak the sea eagle high pressure kayaks are worth considering
@@davidpoots8362 Thanks. I have a variety of inflatables, most of which are stable. The X500 sounds good apart from the build quality issues. I'd heard some groans about build quality from other people. I don't necessarily need a sit in kayak due to the nature of the kayak that I do. I have a drop stitch kayak which is similar to the Sea Eagle Razorlite. It's the fastest kayak I've got but lacks primary stability compared to the other inflatables I have (such as the Sandbanks Optimal)
Interesting! Looks like good fun with quite a bit of work as well 😎 You would have survived well in the Roman empire 🙂 Happy holidays!
Any activity on the water os great fun
It's fun to see how well it performs in waves and wind a little worse than what I'm used to. The Itiwit X500 is a nice kayak, which I always feel very safe with out in the archipelago!😀
Thanks the x500 keeps impressing me
☄️Fantástico 🚣
Thanks
Beautiful boats and great video...
Thanks, even on a windless day there is always fun to be had in a small boat.
Nice one 👍 bet you need to be fit to row that boat 😊
I hate the engine which is why I bought long sculling oars, after all there is no hurry
@@davidpoots8362 Very true.
This really looks very amazing and inspiring! Thank you for the presentation. 😊
Any time on the water is good for the soul.
Any roll that ends where you don't have to swim is a perfect roll. Great video again David with some nice bouncing and a bit of surfing 👍👍
River Rat 2 was at the top of her game
@davidpoots8362 👍👍
Really nice still shot there at the end 😎 Good to see the X500 out and about, some wave jumping and splash.. it isn't exactly fantastic for surfing but some fun rides can be had with it. 😎 Nice with the rolls again!
Thanks, for me this is about building confidence in a boat which looks like a lake toy and performs like a sea kayak.
Cheers, I enjoyed the footage and the wonderful humor! Thanks for putting the effort and sharing, really appreciated!
That's kind, thanks
That's a beautiful paddle! Also what do you think of the small insta go camera? Have you used gopros etc to compare it to? I think the versatility of it is very tempting!
It's a great place to paddle The go3s is a great wee camera and very versatile, lots of mounting options and the pod as a remote is great. Gopro is slightly better for watersport because the insta pod isn't waterproof.
Hello David, I watch your videos with interest and admiration. Kayaking and paddling have never been my choice. I was probably always too lazy to paddle and since childhood I was introduced to sailing in small dinghies and I am still faithful to it. But when I watch your videos, I feel like trying it. Your expeditions, not very epic, as you said, look so cool. For me, they are too epic. For my attempt, I imagine a light kayak in skin on frame technology in Greenland style, which I could build myself and start with short rides on calm waters along with training capsizes and returns in Eskimo style to feel more confident. This is just talk for now, because I am not at all sure if I will bring myself to it and if my coronary bypasses will allow for such excesses. Well, even if I don't, I'll still have my fun with the sailing canoe, the sailing dinghy-skiff and the rides in them in a retired style. And watching your epic expeditions! Warmest regards
Hello Rob, that's all very kind. I enjoy the kayaking because it's easy to launch and use the boat. As I slide into retirement my plan is to sail much more and I have been enjoying watching you sail the Goat Island Skiff. Kayaking involves similar exertion to walking, but rescues must be learned. If you have a heart condition it's probably not someting to do alone, because you can't simply drop sails and sit in the boat. Best of luck with the bypass.
@@davidpoots8362 Thanks! My sailing on Goat Island Skiff is very un-epic - a not very large lake a few dozen km from home and most often very light winds and early reefing, when it blows a good 3 Bft. A bit more epic ;) is sailing the BETH canoe on the waters of the Bay of Puck, but also very close to the shore. It may look even better on the video, but these are very short trips to the sea and a quick return, so as not to overdo the effort. So all dreams today come down to making it happen again next season. Warmest regards
Thanks for continuing to share your paddling adventures!
Thanks, it's fun to reflect and relive thr trips
What a beautiful nature. I need to travel around more, to paddle in those places too. :)
It's a fantastic place to explore
Gola in swedish means peach/tattla, you know like, children say, "he did that", that´s than you "gola" on somebody,, or thief/gangs do it on each other or to the police. Thanks as always for a great video!🙌
Gola sounds like Gold and there is a story of Spanish Gold.
Haha. Was googling a Boyne Currach and my buddy Robin shows up sculling it! 😮
He pops up everywhere
Really enjoyed that paddle combined with the history lesson, 👍🤝
Thanks, it's a great place
I will have to stick this one on my list. Great video David
Thanks its a great area to explore
Loving it! You must have a very accomadating wife 😂
It's like children, every so often she needs a break
I hereby solemnly promise not to tell anyone about the non-emergency use of emergency chocolate that may or may not have occurred. My lips are sealed!
If only I could post Ice-cream to pay for your silence
@davidpoots8362 I will hold you to that on any future visit to Northern Ireland!
Very interesting video! Special feature with the shipwreck, but sorry to hear about the kayaker. It's serious out there and good point about the tides/currents etc, might be something one doesn't expect if not read up on. Reassuring to hear about your safety gear, the VHF radio, the PLB, the flares, the ability to shelter in a pinch, but what calmed me down was that you had emergency chocolate along. All the other gear pales in importance next to that!
with that chocolate I could have survived for up to an hour before being rescued
@davidpoots8362 That should work. Rescuers will be motivated to move very quickly to the scene if they hear there's chocolate...
Great video David 👍 However, sad to hear about the kayaker, but goes to show you should always have the right gear with you, as you did. Also, this video shows just how quickly the water can change. Great paddle with some beautiful views, and sneaky snacks. Muppet lol 👍👍
very sobering
@@davidpoots8362 You're not wrong
You're such a big kid yeah on the hill lol. Great little adventure David, and that bike looked cool 👍 So has my book reached that shop Hehe.
Do you know I went all that way and your book had sold out, lucky I already have a copy.
@davidpoots8362 lol l wish. I'm working on another for Christmas. But this time it's some kayak poems.
I loved to see this vlog. So much things that are the same and some that are different to Sweden. Thanks for showing me around!😍🙌🤗
Thanks, yes similar in many ways, but wet & windy instead of cold. The trick is to keep enjoying what you have.
@ yes, that is so true!
Nice! I was considering a folding bike at one point to combine with a small inflatable kayak and vary biking / paddling across lakes during trips in larger forestal areas, but never got around to it. Good to see you found your train of thought there in all cases!
The x500 is too big but a packraft and folding bike could be fun.
@davidpoots8362 Yes, that was my thought! 😎
Loving the ballyboyland views from the train!
Did you see your house?
@@davidpoots8362 yip i did 😀
Really enjoyed that David. Thankyou for making my morning enjoyable with that little adventure. Liked and Subscribed
Thanks, although I must confess I'm glad I didn't camp on the islands
Haha, double tow! Great vistas, nice to see the Causeway 😎
If only I had roller skates.
@@davidpoots8362 😂
Good to see this kayak being used in a range of moves. I'm keen to find something that will pack down into a small yacht but want something sea worthy and fun, as a seasoned sea paddler. At 6'5 I may be on the edge of height for it but keen to try it, and hopeful. Some great tips in this thanks.
It's a great wee kayak and very capable, but prone to leaks. It probably wouldn't suit a very tall person. Maybe the Pakayak?
Finally some rock & roll!

Thanks, I like the variety, so many ways to enjoy outdoors
@@davidpoots8362 I also like the variety of different outdoor activities and sometimes weather push us to do other outdoor things than just paddle.
That's not taking the dogs for a walk that's, the dogs taking you for a run Hahaha 🐶🐶 Fun video David 👍 Loved the story about the giant pretending to be a baby. OR IS IT A STORY ???
Thanks, there's nothing like being taken for a drag to spice up my day
Amazing locations, and awesome with the dolphins! Paddling with dolphins is still a bucket list item of mine (as is visiting the Giant's Causeway - I was scheduled to go to northern Ireland a previous year and became ill, so no travel or paddling, otherwise I would have gotten in touch with you).
Dolphins turn up here quite often and I never grow tired of them. I hope you can visit, there's a lot to show you.
@@davidpoots8362 Would be awesome! Hopefully a project for the next year or the year after that! I've paddled a Dolphin model kayak but that doesn't quite compare.
lovely watching you go for a paddle, new subsriber, thanks for doing what you you do ...
Thanks glad you enjoy coming along for the ride
Thanks for showing the beautiful columns and amazing with the dolphins!!🙌
What we see from kayaks is amazing. No eagles here, but lots of seabirds, seals & dolphins
Love it David. Very cool
I can't help getting excited when Dolphins turn up
@@davidpoots8362 I'm the same. Puffins too
It really looks like great paddle cruising and a beautiful encounter with dolphins and passing through narrow straits. And here's my general observation: here, in the Baltic Sea, there are no tides and I have no experience with them, and there, there have always been tides and I have the impression that you treat them organically and use them in your sea trips. Isn't that right? Regards 😀
Thanks. Yes even weak 2knot tides stop ant progress so trips are planned to go with the flow. It's fun when I get it right.
I was already too watch this last night made myself a coffee put my feet up, turned the TV on and then found out it was private. Hehe Great video David 👍 so lovely to see the dolphins.
Sorry about that I messed up the upload. Dolphins always make my day
@@davidpoots8362 last time I saw dolphins in the wild I was swimming in the sea along the East Coast and one came right near me I was about 16 years of age and I don't mind telling you it's scared the hell out of me for a moment. But since then I have never seen one in the wild whilst I have been on or in the water.
I see them quite often, usually when the sea is flat.
Lucky sod 😂
You did really well and congratulations for the good results!🙌 Looks so good when you do the rolls🤗
Thanks, the experts have me motivated to earn more
HI David, Wow what a great fun event. Looks like you all had a great time.
