Essential Rangline Fixes Part 2: Sealing the Roof
The roof caps used for antennas on the Rangeline are prone to leaking. A simple fix by removing the cabinet backs and plugging the roof penetration hole from the inside is much more secure than trusting the roof sealant. Just grab some rubber stoppers to fill the holes.

Rangline rear cabinet fix
Просмотров 2564 месяца назад
The Airstream Rangline has a design flaw in one of the rear cabinets that will cause it to break easily. If you have a Rangline, I recommend you take a look at the cabinet to fix it before it fails. My fix reworked the cabinet to make it more sturdy and easier to access the electronics bay which requires some woodworking skills.

Entertainment System for the Airstream Rangeline: Part 3 - Video Projector
Просмотров 2904 месяца назад
This is the final part of the series on an entertainment system for the Airstream Rangeline (or any class B van really). If you're just interested in the projector system, this video has all the details. You can use the projector directly without all the customization I did in the first two videos. For class B vans where size and weight are important, I found projection systems to be more flexi...
Entertainment System for the Airstream Rangeline: Part 2 - Cabinets
Просмотров 2255 месяцев назад
While running wiring to power the new projector system, I took advantage of having the cabinet backs off to restructure the cabinets. The overall cabinet look and build quality in the Rangeline is good, but Airstream was very conservative in taking a lot of space for cable runs which results in some cabinets having little usable space. Entertainment System for the Airstream Rangeline: Part 1 - Wiring

The Airstream Rangeline comes without a built in entertainment system for the coach. I viewed this as a positive when purchasing because I wanted to install something myself that would better suit my needs than the stock system most class-B vans came with. The first step is to add a new circuit to the 12v system to power everything. Parts List: (Amazon Affiliate Links) 14 gauge wire: amzn.to/3W...
Adding Solar Panels to the Rangeline
Просмотров 8226 месяцев назад
The Airstream Rangeline comes with a 200W solar panel, which isn't quite enough to keep up with daily usage on the van. There's some available roof space, so I decided to add more panels to up the solar capacity. Securing the cutting board in the Rangeline
Просмотров 328Год назад
The Airstream Rangeline has a nice cutting board that fits over the sink. Unfortunately, it tends to slide out and bounce around the cabin with any sharp turns or sudden stops. This small project is to secure the cutting board to the sink without resorting to straps or other visible changes. Pretty simple change with some basic woodworking tools. Rear Window Shelf

I took out the Molle panel on the rear door of the Rangeline to make room for storing the ladder. This project is to build a small shelf for the rear window to cover up the exposed wiring. This requires some woodworking and the appropriate tools, but isn't too difficult. Parts used 4" wide by 1/4" wood of your choice (I used Poplar) Stain and finish of your choice.
Accessing the inverter on the Rangeline

Several people have reported some issues with the inverter setup on the Airstream Rangeline. This video shows how to access the inverter, and changes some of the settings that the Firefly control unit doesn't allow. I also added an easy access panel to enable switching the unit off without pulling the back cabinet apart. Medium difficulty requiring some woodworking. No parts used other than som...

Hi there. Your videos are great. Did you have to upgrade your solar controller to support the additional PV panel input?
No upgrade needed, the solar controller they used has plenty of headroom for adding more panels. Max 30A or 100V. This layout is 18A at 22v, so a bit more than half the rated capacity of the controller.
Beautifully done! Thanks for sharing.
just rubber mount the pump well away from metal supports, I installed two webasto heaters in my interstate (one air to air and one for engine coolant) and no noise inducting vibrations transmitted to van
Do you know if the projector's orientation can be flipped vertically? I'd like to mount it to the back of the overhead cabinet door (basically a ceiling mount when the overhead cabinet door is open).
Yes, there was an invert option in the display menu. It should be possible to mount like that so it's always connected.
Understood, Still there were several items that were obviously hurried together and don't fit the Airstream name. Why can't there be quiet pumps, studier shelf design and no leaks?
Rangeline seems to be the Red-Headed Step Child of Airstream!
It was the first year for this model from Airstream, and they're clearly working through some starting issues, but overall we've been pleased with our van.
I purchased a partially completed Rangeline that was hail damaged during construction. I has all the exterior mods complete. The interior has the sub floor and the wiring installed. I have watched your mod videos. They have helped me decipher some of what airstream was going to do. I would like to collaborate with you because you have taken most of the hidden panels apart. Would you be willing to contact me?
Sure - sounds like a fun project. I'd be happy to comment on what I've learned.
Yes, we noticed your added insulation. Good idea.
My van has the black paint job, and I noticed the metal van shell was too hot to even touch when I was working on it. With the insulation the insides of the cabinets are much cooler now and presumably the whole van will stay cooler in the sun.
You’re fortunate that you can pull your circuit breaker panel fully out. Mine will only come forward about 1.5” before short wires stops it.
Gosh-that fuel pump would drive me insane
RAM
"Dodge?"
Thanks for sharing, looks like I’ll stick to my portable solar panel.
What kind of bolts did you use for the fiberglass poptop installation? I wonder if you could just put 2 bolts in the front leading edge and rely on alien tape or other super duty double sided tape for the rest, may making four courses of tape rather than 2. The hope is that if done while the roof is cool, heat expansion would stretch everything tight but within limits. I really appreciate your experimental cutting edge work for our benefit.
1/2" #8 hex screws. I wanted to make sure not to punch through the roof material on the inside. I'm a bit paranoid of things coming off and would be nervous with just two screws and tape. There's a channel down both sides that runs down the middle of the panel so you can't tape there - leaving just 3" on each side for tape.
Differential thermal expansion - it'll get you every time! Great video though.
Just installed mine today, thanks for the great video.
Wow
Incredible! Thank you for sharing!
Amazing
Wow
The noise is coming from pump internally not from vibration on frame and rubber mounts won’t help. I tried.
What exactly is that King roof cap? I am trying to figure out how to mount an OTA antenna to it but it appears to be merely an access point for cabling with one on both sides of van. However, when I removed the curb side cover there were no wires present. I presume I must fish them through from underneath by removing the back cabinet panel. Thanks for your videos!
Yes, the "pre-wire" they have is just some coax cable run behind the curb-side cabinets. You have to unscrew the felt cabinet backs to feed it up from below. The driver side has a bundle of 5 mini-coax that goes over to the curb-side.
Takes him 5 minutes to show the interior Jeez.
Great job! Let's hope Airstream is watching
Clever fix. Let's hope Airstream is watching.
Would you buy this unit again?
Yes. I like to tinker and there's things that could be better so I work on them, but overall it's a pretty solid system. Some early 23 model purchasers have had electrical issues, but I haven't run into anything major.
@dunclawler thank you. We've read a lot about the early 23 electrical issues. We had put some money down on a used one with only 4k miles. But backed out fearful it was one of the plagued ones. Happy for you that yours is electrical problem free. We will keep looking. We really like the product and lay out.
Hello Duncan, I sent you a question on Messenger. Seeking your advice on a RL electrical issue.
Great idea. On my '24 Rangeline, your 3d printed buckles are too wide to fit in the cutouts in the metal frame. I scaled them to 80% when I printed them, but then the 1" strap is a bit tight. I wonder if they changed the size of the cutouts between the 23 and 24s or is it just something with my printer settings.
Your videos are great! Thank you. I have a '24 that I picked up 3 weeks ago. When I go into the settings, Battery 1 is my house battery and Battery 2 is my chassis battery. Maybe Airstream watched your channel... I'm going to update the House battery settings per your suggestions. I'm hoping this helps as even on sunny days, my refrigerator seems to use more juice than the solar can charge. Losing about 20% charge per day on the House battery with nothing but the fridge on.
That's pretty consistent with what I see with winter sun - about 20% loss a day just from fridge + lights with solar. I'm planning to upgrade the solar panels this summer which should help. Airstream actually recalled all the 23 units to wire the batteries properly. The 24s were set correctly from the start.
nice van but where tv at, you gotta have that
I just posted a video about the entertainment system I put in. I view the van not coming with a stock system as a plus because none of the options I saw fit what I wanted. For a few hundred I was able to customize something much better than the default options I saw.
We have the exact floor plan, same color and of course with the pop top. Excellent Van and features. Great overall for practicality. We absolutely love ours. You guys did great on choosing your van.
Is this a 2023 or ‘24 RL?
2023
Great video by the way. Besides the layout of your Ridgeline and the Solis (assuming 59PX), were other factors such as price tipped the scale one or another in your decision to go with Ridgeline? I've got a family of 4-5 and we're in the market for a class B that sleeps 4-5 people. Thanks in advance
Yes, the big factors were price, layout, single fuel system and all the options we wanted. There's only seatbelts and beds for 4 in the rangeline. You could add an inflatable mattress across the driver seats for a 5th bed, but I don't see an easy way to get a 5th seat.
My head wants to explode every time I hear someone call a Ram, a Dodge. Please do your homework on the difference. Geez
You should do YOUR homework. They are the same company and up until a few years ago, Ram vehicles were labeled “Dodge Ram”. They merely rebranded for people like YOU to think they are different which ends up driving sales. It’s like going to Trader Joe’s and seeing a bunch of different “brands” even though everything is packaged by Trader Joe’s. It creates the illusion of choice. 🙄
@Getlosttt if it's Ram, call it Ram. If it's Dodge, call it Dodge. If it's Chrysler, call it what it is... Fiat... so on. Get the facts straight. Good day...
Stellantis, let's just call them that to clear up confusion
@@Slimsomerville good point, Dodge & Ram are separate and owned by Chrysler who is owned by Stallantis if I'm not mistaken? I was wondering myself in.an overall search about quality, reliability and price, thanks!
What kind of gas mileage are you getting? I’m in Canada, so please lemme know if you’re talking US or rest-of-world gallons. Thx! 😊
US - I've been getting 18-19MPG on longer trips
Great overview! I’m looking at buying a Rangeline and everything you said is on my list of positives! Thanks for the info.
Great floor plan. Like the idea of no propane. Why the retarded electric system? A little more battery and a 3000 inverter, problem solved. It wont be on my list until they fix it.
What are your thoughts on the Roadtrek Pivot Lumber in comparison?
I haven't seen one in person, but layout looks similar. MSRP is quite a bit higher and it has a propane system rather than single fuel. It also lacks the pop-top so you can't sleep 4.
@@dunclawler the slumber has a pop top. What is the battery capacity on this? I think the Pivot slumber is 600 amp hours.
270
The Dodge platform has come a long way since since they've overhauled the previous. They added a couple of gears made the seats more comfortable and hopefully did something with the crappy sound systems while in driving mode that most of these have. I'm on my 4th Dodge ram pickup and the sound systems are kick butt.. I'd love to incorporate that into one of these the only downside is it's only front-wheel drive however it gives you a wide platform in the rear but you should still have the van lifted a couple of inches and put more aggressive wheels on it so many people have done that and it is made a big difference.. adding lithium will allow the rear AC to kick on or have a way to run it off of the second alternator if you have that because the generator will use up a lot of fuel as your traversing down the road for several hrs .. but it is the most affordable platform in the dual twin beds is great for someone like me to put my e-bike inside because it is $12000 and one of the most expensive on the planet. I'd be more comfortable with it inside than out unless I towed a trailer.. I hear so many people talk about quitting van life and I'm just getting started by selling everything at 62 and visiting this beautiful country of ours... At my age I have really nothing to lose..lol... Good luck with whatever you do, maybe you'll change your mind about van life ... But the AC has been a concern of mine to I am ready to purchase real soon
Very nice rig and features. Good luck. 👍
good modification. for a company like airstream, you would think that they would have thought of these issues. relatively simple fix if anyone was listening when the van was being tested.
have you experienced any issues with the electrical or battery charging? not sure why you would have to rewire the get power from the power tower. should this obvious issue not have been solved by airstream?
No issues with battery charging. The way the solar panel was wired prioritized the car battery which was backwards from what the manual recommends and resulted in very inefficient usage until I rewired it (Airstream has issued a service bulletin to switch it). The galley outlet not being on the inverter is pretty baffling - not sure why they built it that way.
@@dunclawler I don't fully understand this yet, and am learning about the various ways you get power while driving or boondocking, but am comparing the Solis to this - the induction stove, and refrigerator are easily powered? Do you like it better than the two burner cooktop w/the Solis?
@@donnachimenti7 The induction cooktop works very well and you don't have to worry about cooking fume venting. The single burner can be limiting if you're doing a lot of cooking. The cooktop can easily be powered by the inverter, but the galley outlet for some reason isn't wired to the inverter (see one of my other videos). The only other thing that can't be powered by the battery alone is the AC - that requires running the generator or shore power. The refrigerator will draw down about 20% of the battery a day with no power input, with good solar it's less than 10%.
@@dunclawlerThanks, very helpful! I was concerned about the AC also, thank you so much. I'm traveling with a husky and that is an important factor for me. Much appreciated and enjoy your travels! Great videos.
speak up!!!
I’m seeing the MSRP is about 132-134k. What did you pay for yours?
That's in the range we paid - didn't negotiate much of a discount.
@@dunclawler - that’s quite different from the norm. Almost all manufacturers have a MSRP that is about 30% above what the RV is actually worth. So the Rangeline must have the MSRP at the correct price to begin with. Interesting.
@@dunclawler why not say what u paid?
@@Patrick_Ross that MSRP is such a scam
Panoramic rv has way better quality and floor plan. Check that out.
Looks like a very similar floor plan. We liked the single fuel system and pop-top option
i have been looking at both vans. i would agree that the panoramic is a far superior product, but it is also much more $$. i am figuring that Airstream will fix all of these initial problems that are occurring for future models. or at least i hope so.
Ridiculous... It's a much higher price
first ive heard of the rangeliner,,,,,thankyou
smart and simple solutions. thalles for sharing. how do you like the Ridgeline so far?
Overall it's worked really well for us. Great flexibility, and the gas mileage is good compared to larger vans (~18 average across long trips).
We are really disappointed with the climate control of our rangeline. If it is 86 degrees outside, it is 86 degrees inside. The air coming out of the AC is definitely cool but that cooling does not reach past the bathroom. Wife factor -100, will be selling our back. Expensive mistake.
Any other specifics - I'm looking hard at the Rangeline and am worried about the real "In Use" issues
We haven't used the AC much (we live in the Pacific Northwest), but it seemed to do fine in Colorado over the summer. I could see how it might struggle to cool the whole van if parked in direct sun in the southwest (especially if you get the black exterior). The reflective shades really help keep the front cool.
Yes they didn't think that went out correctly like most class beads unless you can get the rear AC to operate then you just blowing cold air into a large void behind you.. my recommendation is to block off or isolate the flight deck as we call it in the aviation world.. like put a curtain behind the back part of the front seats. They do that a lot with cargo vans and U-Hauls and you will notice a big difference but if you can get lithium power you'll get the rear AC to work and then it'll be like an icebox in there
Great video..please make the subtitle cc available thank you.
Very informative..thanks
