As someone that suffers with dyslexia, roleplaying has been key in combating it.
This is a roleplaying channel that will focus on reviews, top 10 lists, hints and tips all the while helping other identify if they are dyslexic. I will also advice and tips that both I and other professionals use to help cope in a world where reading and writing well is expectation and is a huge part your life.
Reading roleplaying books have improved my reading skill (because they’re books I enjoy reading) but also given me the confidence to read out loud and deliver presentations in my professional life and I want to do the same for you.
Please help support my channel grow by subscribing to it and liking and sharing anything you enjoy.
I’m happy for any feedback, good or bad. I plan to upload new videos at least twice a week.
Importantly, if you or your children struggle with dyslexia, please drop me a message as we are not alone and I’m here to help.
Thanks

My problem with they way some people react to controversial themes is how selective they are. Slavery is a big no-no, but feudalism is fine? Colonization is not something you can have in a game, but brutal wars are? And as an european I always find it hillarious that some american games shy away from themes of sex and nudity, but casual violence is somehow fine. Now I respect that people have different tolerance levels for stuff like that and don't want it in their personal games. And that is not a problem at all. But in return I'd expect that when I run games in ancient times I can have themes of slavery and colonization in my games without having to explain that this isn't the same thing as endorsing it. For me rpgs are opportunities to explore characters and societies different from the ones I want to see in the real world. For instance I abhore people who casually uses lethal force to solve problems, but rpg characters do that all the time. And it doesn't make us violent psychos.
Hi there. Thank you for watching and commenting. I completely agree. People are way too offended by certain things (what tends to be the buzz of the week) but happy to let many more terrible things fly. Look at the music industry, rock music (satanic panic) always seen as evil, causes violence and many "evil" characters in films have it on but modern rap music gets a pass. All of most of the past is considered evil for the modern viewpoint but without it, we couldn't learn and not repeat. It only those in charge felt the same and I guess like me, I RPG to escape from the modern day and live to try to (as well as we can) experience new things, the past, the future, in our imagination. We can't change anything, but neither does erasing it help. Learn from it so no one repeats it.
Great review, there is a D100 version which is bigger :)
Also the settlement stuff is optional, characters could just travel between settlements.
I’ve watched the Road, you need a settlement as it’s pretty bleak out there. Thanks for watching my video and sending me to book. Sorry it took me so long to get played and reviewed
More pages of goodness 👍
16:10 shots fired. We shouldn't need to have these excerpts in the hobby about dealing with slavery and bad things, but since wotc and other publishers feel the need to virtue signal and stick their heads in the sand about atrocities, I praise the author for putting injustice and bad things in their world for players to fight against as well as putting their flag on the hill where they stands. if there is no reason to be heroic, why even play in the box?
Exactly. I think it’s great to have this front and centre so therefore not hiding it. Agreed, we shouldn’t need this things but hey ho, this is the world in which we find ourselves Thank you for watching and commenting on my video
WOO-HOO! My goto as well! Though, i am biased. i have done art for a few modules for them.

@@Dungeonsanddyslexia sadly, no. I worked on the recently released (and on Goodman games website) Mid-Life Monster Manual, and 2 adventures: the forthcoming ‘Metal Gods of the Apocalypse’ (level 3+ adventure) and ‘The Exorcist Awaits’ (level 3-5)

@@Dungeonsanddyslexia thanks for the vids!
It’s just take me bloody ages to download them all off DTRPG. I’m so boring my groups with these
Brilliant offer. Thanks for highlighting these. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for your amazing feedback and for watching my video. Glad you found it useful!
I actually love a lot of those changes and making sure that tools for safe play are explicitly mentioned. That said, Hasbro is kind of doing a lot to kill the game in other ways which makes me sad.
There seems to be a huge divide in the fan base and I guess for us oldies, it just feels like change for the sake of change. And people struggle with change but I’m glad you like them. Totally agree with the 2nd point. They do appear to care more for profits than quality. But is there la k if overall care going to reduce profits? Thank you for watching my video and taking the time to comment
personally, i like the art. it is in line with what i get hired for. thats ok- art is subjective. 😊
I don’t dislike the art, I’m just not a fan of such rapid changing art style from page to page. Though I never complained about White Wolf doing it (I’m sure a hypocrite 😂) Cool, need to see the style you do. You’ll have to share more in the discord
i think the metal rarity is my favorite aspect of the original Dark Sun. The slavery portion: slavery still exists today. sure its horrible but ignoring it never helps.
Agree. It’s such a different spin on the fantasy trope but maybe it’s why it was (or seemed) never as popular as your classic worlds
I've played every edition and am fine with removing half-species from the core book, as I love having more species overall. Describing mixed parentage and taking the features of one species is easy, and there is guidance online & in supplements. As for trigger stuff - if you've ever had a DM or another player get wildly gross and inappropriate, ever had a player or DM have a breakdown during a game, or if you've ever done things in a game that you've later regretted as it did not go over well, this is a flag saying "Hey - think before you speak". I love that the rules are finally saying this. Irritating hyper-sensitives are really rare, but everyone is a jerk sometimes. This is a good reminder to try to be empathetic.
Hi there. Thanks for watching and commenting. I've never had to worry about players getting out of hand as I just remove them from my game. I do not need a set of rules or hand signals to hold up a game. But then after 30 + years, I have the confidence to call it out if needs be. I guess having things set for new players is a good thing especially when playing with strangers. Though (hopefully) this is where a good session zero should help stop the need doe this to happen. You're right about "think before you speak" as this should be in the forefront of a lot of people especially on social media. Personally I've only every have one bad experience with a player and even after taking him to one side, he didn't change so he wasn't invited bacl. Half races (or species) seem an odd thing to remove as they've been a part of fantasy since Tolkien especially given WotC saying they were "problematic in a modern day" (or words to that effect) so I think it's more their motive for removing not the removal itself. I personally like the idea of other races falling in love and having a family. This seems the for less racist stance
SWEET! Anyone else have a problem with the affiliate link? I use it and it takes me to the main page, not directly to ShadowSun product.

Homebrewing saved me from Has and Wiz. I love inclusivity but not at the cost of letting people silently X Card bully the entire table into catering to their sensitivity. I refuse to honor any form of silent expression of discontent. Be an adult and speak. This is also why Session Zero is great for setting expectations. There is a type of SJW player who is equally bad as the Andrew Tate and Donald Trump loving MAGA who pretends to be a victim when either they aren't allowed to harass and bully others or when they see content for someone other than themselves. They're the same people inside, they just disagree on the issues but their behavior and roots behind their logic is the same. They're the same person otherwise, using the same strategies, the same "no low is too low to stoop to" burn the world mentality of a chaos muppet. Generally these are antisocial people who have misanthropic and cynical views of other people and society and are social nihilists who don't just believe nothing has value, but also believe in destroying everything "because it has no value". When you stop catering to these mental infants and properly ostracize them from your space, the quality of your space will improve in every area. Inclusivity is about rejecting these chaos muppets, their divisiveness, and making the game enjoyable for someone other than only them. It was hijacked by agenda bearing activists who are equally as bad. The problem isn't inclusivity. I want to create content ONLY for reasonable adult minded adults. There have always been crazy weirdos who It's all about asking if you want something for yourself, or just want to deprive others.I am not depriving weirdos, sickos, and deplorables their content because I am not advocating for the cause that nobody should ever run a game of that type - I am only saying I won't do that. Since your channel seems to cater to rightwing people who are The Boy Who Cried Woke: Anti-Wokers don't want any content anywhere for LGBT+ people, or anyone who is Non-Christian, Non-Rightwing. All content must be ONLY for them or it's "woke". And everything must share their Donald Trump Locker Room Talk about minorities, the poor, women, and trans people accompanied by their incel beliefs being coded into every aspect. The goal of these people is to deprive everyone except themselves of having any content. We must all view their phony performative outrage as a psyop which was engineered to try to force everyone else to only create content for them and nobody else. This has been a big issue with rightwingers for the last 30 years or so but it's become a lot worse over the last 10 years.
Guys just play it how you like. In any players handbook it states the rules are just guide lines not written in stone. My group of players are to rude to adhere to such petty things as "RACE", and triggers. Your more likely to suffer PTSD after one of my sessions. Play the game how you like, we still use 2nd edition rules with 5th edition. It's our preference. If your changing RACE to species well say good by to the HUMAN RACE I GUESS. LOL so funny I leave you with this “There are only two precious things on earth: the first is love; the second, a long way behind it, is intelligence.” ― Ed Greenwood, Elminster: The Making of a Mage
Apart from using 2nd ed. rules, your group sounds very much like mine. Are you me? 😏😂 Great point about us being apart of the human species….😏 Thank you for watching and commenting on my video
@@Dungeonsanddyslexia Your welcome
WRT being sensitive with other players, I don't really see this as an issue either. Pre-game starting or session zeros are to let everyone know what the game is about (this is usually more of an issue where strangers or acquaintances gather to play than in friend groups). That's when the group can decide to change things up for a player before the game begins, or the player can choose to play in another game. If you are all close buddies and you won't stay away from stuff that makes your close buddies uncomfortable...well..you are crap friends IMHO. So going with the "not close or don't know each other at all" scenarios. Good to have a checklist as well, because sometimes people don't know what they aren't comfortable with until they see it on a list (also not a big deal...this is something other communities have been doing for decades, where things can get intense and trust is required...like the BDMS community...and yeah, trust is important between players and the GM/DM...so this helps with that when you don't know each other). Then...well...sometimes in the middle of a long running game...there's an unforeseen issue, and yeah, handsignals, or some other indicator is just one of many ways to deal with it. Pause...figure out if things can continue or should stop. The player can choose to nope out, which is fine, or the group can also adapt, which is fine, and everyone should be expected to be an adult about it and not cause a scene. Going back to BDSM (since there's so much here that's the same)...Yellow or Red for safewords. There's a lot of overlap between the two communities so I'm not surprised that similar "best practices" have made it into the TTRPG space. It's not the same things (obviously) but the core concepts of consent and trust apply here. Especially with new people. This is decades worth of experience across multiple communities being applied here. It ain't woke, it's just not being an ass. Neither is the race thing (I address that in another comment under frankrafaelson's comment).
I think it depends on how disruptive it is. I was bought up to leave all my Personal issues at the door of work, dojo’s, gyms and hobbies. All these are escapes from life not times to continue to well on lives issues and difficulties. It really is each to his own and I agree this is actually where session zero’s come into play and are very important especially if you have new players are the table. So once this is done, everyone should know where they stand and whether everyone is in. Yes, trusting players and GM’s is key to fun experience. Yes you need to listen to players and keep within agreed story lines and plot points and then everyone should have fun. It’s a great hobby and hopefully everyone can find common ground
Anyone has the option to stop playing any game at any time. Rules for this is pathetic.
I totally agree, and as for expecting everyone else at the table to stop and for the GM to change his adventure....as many others have said. They're welcome to leave Thank you for watching and commenting on my video

@@Dungeonsanddyslexia I will say, I appreciate WotC leaving the older books up for sale on DriveThruRPG, without alteration. 5e was nice because it was streamlined and easy to learn, but felt very... commercialized. 3.5 felt like it had more love put into it (most of the time).
Totally agree. DrivethruRPG is sure a great place (even though their monopoly can be annoying). 5th was great for bring in a new generation and older players back. 3.5 has always been our favourite but those books are long gone and I can’t face tracking them down so I’m starting to run a Pathfinder Revised campaign from next Tuesday. You’re welcome to join my discord if you want to discuss games further 👍
It's a brilliant solution to a non-existing problem! I love it like eastern europeans love communism :P
😂😂 you’re winning the comment section today. Thank you for you commenting and watching my video 👍
I really don't want to play a TTRPG with a person who brings 'real world' issues to the table. If you are working through an issue of some sort and playing an RPG will trigger you then take a break and don't impose your issues on your group. Maybe talk to your friends outside of the game and get support that way.... Also, to agree with the below - I don't run games that have sex, sexual assault, or other 'heavy' social issues involved. Dwarves and Elves not getting along is not 'racism' it's gaming. Orcs and goblins are generally the 'bad guys' and it's ok to hate on them.....
I totally agree with you. I do not think anyone does. It's the same as the workplace, in a dojo or TTRPG table. Leave it at the door before you walk in. I'm lucky to have the same group for over 30 years who are now all my best friends so we know what we can and cannot do. Makes me wonder who the players in 2024 plan to kill, as combat is now a huge part of DND 2014 and 2024 so who will be the cannon fodder? Humans I expect will also be acceptable. I feel like writing a new video.....thanks for the idea. Thanks you more though for watching and commenting on my video
You are wrong about race and species. It is race that implies that they are the same. There are many dog races, but cats and dogs are different species. So putting aside any discussion about woke, the new terms are obviously more correct.
Is it, dam. Thank you. Every day's a school day. Thanks for watching, commenting and humbling correcting me
It is a little more complicated in a fantasy world like D&D. Technically a species is "a group of organisms that can interbreed naturally and produce fertile offspring." So it can be argued that humans and elves are the same species because of the existence of half-elves (same could be said for any other half-xxxxx). In that case they would in fact be different races. In reality, the scientific definition of species doesn't account for elves, dwarves, and other fantasy creatures for obvious reasons. Therefore, I really wouldn't argue that using either race or species is more correct, just author's preference.
Thanks for further clarifying and reminding me of what I thought in the first place. Like you say, both seem correct and incorrect at the same time given all the ‘half’ races have now been deleted from the game. As ever, thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Half races aren’t in the game though either explicitly anymore though right? Honestly, the whole interbreeding thing never made sense anyways. But it’s just fiction. (Like…humans are the only thing that is “half” mixing with something else? Kinda dumb). This isn’t a D&D thing though. Tales of the valiant, level up advanced 5E, etc all did away with races before D&D did. This is just a general trend happening in the industry. These anti woke articles are really more about manufacturing outrage for money. Everyone I know is good with using different terms, species in D&D, lineage in ToV, Heritage in LUA5E. Race is just a dumb term that we use because…tradition. Kinda like the 3d6 stats that don’t mean much at all anymore. Just the bonuses. (Race probably made more sense before we had things like Dragonborn…could argue that all great ape like ones are the same species and different variants therefore races…but the game has evolved way past that early design)
@@davidrempel4862 I don't know, Tolkien was pretty happy with elves and humas breeding so I guess a lot of people took inspiration from there. But yeah, it's very odd that only humans can do it or be forced to. I really need to read Tales of the Valiant at some stage as there are so many other fantasy worlds to play and try. Thank you for watching my video and especially joining in within the comments. All feedback is greatly appreciated
i don’t get WHY people cry about newer versions of D&D being “too woke”. Let em. Let WOTC change the game for “the worse” (?) and let players look for alternatives. Mörk Borg. Shadowdark, Dungeon Crawl Classics. Pathfinder. OSE. old AD&D. BECMI. They all still exist and are waiting to be enjoyed with fresh players and new life. Personally, i see D&D has always been evolving. No bog deal. I don’t feel alienated as another 50+ white hetro male. WotC owns the IP, their prerogative to take the game where they want - and they’ll always drive it towards profits.
Why I totally agree with you (as always) I do find it sad the direction it’s taking, as well as the western world in general. We don’t seem to preparing the next generation to be able to cope with thoughts and ideas that are not their own. WotC aren’t interesting in us oldies and I’m perfectly happy with that. I own the version I’m happy to play if I have too. But like you say, so much more better games out there. My Dark Sun Shadowdark review lands tonight and well, no spoilers but……..😏
@ i cant wait! i wanna see that dark sun-like adventure for Shadowdark! I love dark sun!
Why complain? Because theythem take the things we love and ruin them. If you change games, they'll go after that game to ruin it too.
@ now now, it will be fine. they OWN D&D. they dont own other OSE/OSR derivatives. Nobody is for ing you to play d&D2024. 5e hasnt changed. 3.5 hasnt. 3.0 hasnt. they cannot change whats already published. They cant change IPs they font own. No need to be fearful. Just play what you like. Nobody is coming to take yer older games. nobody is coming to say you can’t homebrew. let people play how they want. With or without “wokeness”.
@@JeffWittyArt Just over 7 hours to go :)
My character is a Gnome, that identifies as a Minotaur.
As it dam well should 😂 but they’ll still need to stand on a box to reach into those wall mounted cupboards Thanks for watching and commenting
In short, DEI is going to cause D&D to DIE.
Though it might (and I think you right) kill 5e 2024, it can’t die fully as we will always have al the books we own over the past 50 years to use. And then Hasbro might be forced to sell it to someone that actually cares about the IP
@@Dungeonsanddyslexia Fingers crossed and hopefully by then this whole woke mess will have passed and been shown for the fad that it is.
It’s sad when something is started for the right reasons and then it’s over taken for ill gain. But then that’s humans for you. Individually amazing and as groups, become an arse. And even worse on social media when they’re faceless
Great show! Been playing D&D since '78, and I decided a few months ago to just hang it up. Plenty of other game systems out there worth playing. Well....at least until they hire inclusivity panels. There have always been bad DMs/GMs and bad players. If you encounter one just move on to a different one. Not quite sure why they have to make up rules to figure it out. As for taking away variable racial and gender attributes and just making everyone the same. Seems kind of boring. Sorry for the rant. Grognard Proud!
Hi there. I totally agree. I’m not sure what the fuss it about either. Not everything needs a trigger warning. Like you say, move on with the game or just leave the group. Not sure what this obsession is where the minority keeps getting to force the majority into certain directions. Agreed, soooo many more better games actually written by people who care about their products too Thank you for the wonderful feedback and commenting 👍
I started with first ed AD&D. I stopped with 3.5. I turned to Castles and Crusades and haven't looked back. Mythras is great game and as BRP is nothing like D&D in game mechanics. My Mythras campaign is 18 months old now. Against the Darkmaster is a bit rule heavier but just rocks. Cthulhu is edging silly Woke but is still very good and playable and Cryptworld, (first ed Chill), is a blast. I have hardly scratched the surface. If you like real D&D, C&C is a go to. Gary Gygax even worked on it
@@galinor7 That's a great list of game there. I actually picked up and Castles and Crusades bulk buy a while back and I'm hoping to run the Undying War campaign one day.
I think for conventions the gm should explain the type of game they are running and what the players may face, which would then allow the prospective players to move on, stopping the game halfway after that is not going to happen, I would remove the player. In my 40 years of roleplaying I have never needed to run a game with sexual assault, sex, or anything of that ilk, there is no need.
Most older players would probably feel the same way, it seems that people seem to have an issue separating fantasy from reality these days.
Orcs were never a race of people they were a monster that you fought who were tougher than goblins, it was only when orcs became an option to play in D&D then the issues arose.
Think that’s why I would do too, sure that’s the way it was meant to come across in the video. I do find it amazing that anyone would feel the need to run anything with sexual assaults too.
Exactly. I don’t roleplay to do it in reality. I’m doing it for the exact opposite
True. I’d actually forgotten about the time before power gaming and warrior class players only wanted to be an orc due to the str bonus.
Happy new year! I ended up not backing Curseborne in the end, but i might look into Bastionland, that looks interesting
Happy new year to you too and thanks for watching and commenting. CB is something I really don’t need in my collection as Vampire and Werewolf really are good enough but I’m just too tempted to see it. I’m not sure I covered it but the quick start rules for Bastionland are on the KS page so check it out first there
Happy new year buddy
And to you David 👍
Oh, the discord link said it was “invalid or expired” is it just me or anyone else?
Hi there. Sorry early days for me on this. I’ve just looked up and it needs to stop ending in 7 days 😏. Please try this one and thanks for letting me know discord.gg/C86ErQYEM8
I’ve just updated it on my main page too
@ thank you! i hopped in the discord. :)
@@JeffWittyArt I see you in there. Thank you for joining and your input
I don't mind about a evil dark elf in movies or on TV so why is Hollywood all upset about a dark elf skin color grow up did they have a problem with Lord of the rings have their orks Nnoooo I want to see this play out yes please keep the storyline as it is written don't put any extra garbage in that is not in the book keep it on point looking for a character that wants to play a dark elf I want to play that dark elf as it is in the book.
I totally agree. We love IP due to cannon and people are way too happy (none fans I might add) when they make it. Not that I’ve watched it but I saw they made orcs ‘misunderstood’ in the Rings of Power. Just madnesss Thanks for watching and commenting and I hope you have a great new year
I pictured them more bluish/deep purple when i originally read the books, way back in the early 90's
Most things are way better in our imagination when reading than when live adaptions are made and something’s really need to stay there. Thank you for watching and commenting. Have a great new year
I don't hold screen rant with all that much regard ....Those folks had some huge hacking issues many years back....I drop those turds along time ago ....LOL ...But if they are dissing on the Drow...they can co crap glass somewhere else! ! Please producers let us have our stories ....Keep the woke brainiacs out of it. Get some producers with some balls is what really needs to happen!
I’ve never really read it before and only came across these articles by accident but I’ve got to agree. There’s a lot of anti anything OS RPG in their arrivals but I guess it’s mainly as we’re not their target audience. Thanks for watching and commenting and I hope you have a great new year
It isn't a book per se, but Dungeon mag and Dragon mag did a Dark Sun primer with various options updated to 3rd edition in I want to say 2004. A 3rd party supplement called Shadowsun serves as a "totally not Dark Sun, dont sue me" supplement for Shadowdark.
Ah cool. That's amazing, thank you. I've been on the fence regarding Shadowdark so I'll check out both.
@Dungeonsanddyslexia Shadowdark is an excellent game. Enjoy!
@@scottlurker991 I'm on it. Looks like it's on backorder but at least I can get the PDF now. Have a great new year!
@@scottlurker991 Both now ordered (don't tell my wife :P)
Unfortunately my personal integrity won't let me support HASWoTC in any way shape or form. I wouldn't have even clicked on this if D$D was in the title. But if I were to somehow acquire a PDF without the algo finding out, I may use it for Tales of the Valiant ( A 5e clone with no ties to Wizards of Hate ).
Tales does looking a very good replacement to 5e. I'm returning back to Pathfinder this year so see how that goes. Failing that, TotV seems a good option. I just don't see any long term play from The Evil Dead and I even reached out to the designers who ignored me so I dropped my pledge. Thank for you watching and commenting and have a great New Year where ever you are!
What a wokefest...hard pass
Hi there. Thanks for watching and commenting. That's the first time I've seen someone call this woke. What parts do you think are?
@@Dungeonsanddyslexia I dunno, all the female characters are either goddess status and ultra grand, and the males, especially white dudes, are gnomes and stuff lol. That's just for starters man. All these flamboyant gay-y characters with pink tutus and flowers in their hair, men including, oh how about safety tools, are they still in there? Think I'll stick to 1e.
@@permafrost7781 You know you're going to make me go back and look at the art in a whole new light now lol. I sadly never got to play 1e as it was sold without playing as everyone was obsessed with D&D5e so at least I'm getting to start my PF2e campaign early Jan now the D&D buzz in the groups have died. I agree that the art on 1e is far better than 2e. Oh yeah, and the death saves annoy me, why can't anyone just die anymore!?!?!?
Morons are too busy trying not to attract the attention of the professionaly offended. One of the biggest problems facing the public today. The new version of the "Satanic Panic" and one of the reasons for the overly bland, repetative and trope ridden rpg's that we have today. D&D will not improve and evolve beyond this until its ripped from its corporate masters hands.
Totally agree. Satanic Panic, aren’t we showing our age for knowing what this is. I nearly discussed this in the video as it really pissed me off at the time but I still feel it hasn’t really passed with the main stream media (but oddly rape music is perfectly fine 🤔) Long gone are the days of people who love and understand an IP being in financial control of it. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Dragonbane is a D20 game, but is in fact a BRP derivative, meaning it is a distant relative to Runequest. The ducks come from Runequest. Chivalry and Sorcery is a d100 system and mechanically nothing like D&D. You roll d100 and a third 1d10 as a crit die.
You’re right about C&S. did I say D20 in the video? I think I did now 😂 You roll 3d10 for each roll. I blame the Christmas stress of recording several things all at once to get ahead of myself Thanks for confirming where DB came from 👍
Thanks for mentioning Delve and I'm glad its in your top 10, Merry Xmas.
It's a great little game with an amazing theme. Thanks for writing it. I hope you had a great Christmas
Happy Christmas Adrian
@@davidday2014 thank you. and to you David. I hope you have a good one
American history x. That is all
Thanks for watching and commenting. I like this movie. Back when Edward Norton was still bankable
DL is ok. Plus, it doesn’t hold up. I liked it much better when I read it in HS 30+ years ago. Greyhawk is number 1. Forgotten Realms is number 2. If they would stop making kids shows and make it for adults. Take D&D serious, it will make serious returns. You DL people always forget how many people in that party were NOT team players. Brother haters. Wife abusers. Cheaters. Quitters (the dwarf and the paladin). I can go on.
DL is ok, I’m perfectly happy with that. Oddly, I never played Greyhawk and it’s something I really need to go to or read up about. I’ve forgotten about that realm so thanks 👍 That’s where I think Joe will be really good to write for DL (or any other realm) as he seems to have the same vision as us oldies. As always, thanks for watching and commenting
He has my Axe
And my bow!
Slave-1 will always be Slave-1, mouse or not. Disney is scared of itself. Companies are scared of doing anything out of the norm anymore. It's so sad for all forms of content. Dark Sun is no different, as Hasbro just hammers and chisels off the sharp (read: interesting) edges from D&D. Everyone is so afraid of being perceived as anything but nice and perfect and happy. Screw that noise, darkness is *interesting*.
As all Captain's know, it's very bad luck to change the name of a ship and maybe the name change coincides with the decline of Disney Star Wars (we have a working theory :p). I agree, it's all way too safe and it doesn't cater for a huge section of the potential market. Thank for the comment and watching my video
@@Dungeonsanddyslexia No worries, I appreciate honest creators that call it like it is and don't do clickbait. Thank you for your integrity and maybe I'll catch you around again.
I hope you do. However, if you don’t, thank you for watching this one (and hope you carry on with your channel as it’s a fun and wonderful experience especially when people engage with your videos)
@@Dungeonsanddyslexia Thank you! It truly is awesome. My first like and comment on a video got me giddy laughing. Now I just need to figure out proper editing down big videos into funnier, smaller portions.
That’s great. It’s an amazing feeling. I’ve started using clipchimp as it’s free but (as you can see) I don’t tend to edit much. I’m a just out the camera on and go kind of guy 🤣
I've run several one shots and short campaigns on Athas. Using Levelled Up, a 5e clone that has a stronger focus on exploration, so wandering around the desert was mechanically supported. Players were 20-40 years old, some newer to the hobby, some had been playing for a decade. The 2e material is fairly simple to port over to a 5e clone. None of the players had a problem with their being slavers in the game. If only because, unlike most monsters, slavers can be killed without compunction. Corporate types get antsy about slavery because a small minority of people think that historic chattel slavery was a good thing, and corporate types hate it when basic morality gets in the way of making more money. From a player point of view, the problem with Dark Sun is that it is too depressing. When living through catastrophic climate change, playing a game about the after effects of catastrophic climate change is not much fun. Anyway, this is mainly a comment to appease the dark lord Algorithm.
Whatever the reason, thank you for watching and a great comment on my video. I’ll take a look into running it your way as it sounds really interesting and simple enough to achieve
The weird thing is that in a lot of ways Dark Sun is "woke". I think most people can't see past the dark and edgy 90s aesthetics. But when you get right down to it this isn't just "the setting with slaves". It's a campaign about gladiators rising up to violently overthrow the slave owning elite. It's a world where you are literally playing revolutionary punk environmentalists sticking it to the man and trying to bring down an oppressive and self destructive system that is destroying the world. Is it a dystopian grimdark nightmare world? Sure, that's the point. You're not supposed to like that world, you are supposed to rebel against it. Dark Sun being "problematic" isn't the reason we shouldn't play it. It's the whole point!
Thanks for watching and commenting. You're not alone in this opinion as there's several other that have pointed this out in the comments.
@@Dungeonsanddyslexia Not that I think that makes it any more likely we'll get a new book for the setting of course! Still "wokeness" in so much as its even a thing isn't just about wanting everything to be nice and good, its about being Angry that it isn't, and Dark Sun has that part down!
It sure does. I’d go back and play AD&D if I could get over my disliking of THACO 😆
Darksun is Fallout with more leather bikinis and no guns
And what’s no to love about that? 😏 Thank you for watching and commenting 👍
WotC doesn’t need to re-publish Dark Sun. I’m sure that some passionate gamers could adapt the old D&D rules to 5e and share it with fellow gamers. Why wait for stuffy CEOs to make a decision, one that could ruin the tone of the setting.
Thanks for watching and commenting. There is a Dark Sun 5e book out there that is fan made so if you want it we can play it. The downside is that it's only a few plays long and doesn't cover enough. you're spot on about how we expect WotC to treat it though
I completely agree with your point about slavery in Dark Sun. It feels like WOTC is taking a more cautious approach with D&D nowadays, trying to keep the game as marketable and PR-friendly as possible to appeal to a broad audience. It’s a shame, because I believe that Dark Sun could resonate deeply with younger teenage audiences, especially in today’s world. As a high school teacher, I see an alarming number of students who are very concerned about the environment, and Dark Sun offers a pretty stark portrayal of a world ravaged by such a fate, I mean it's the setting’s backdrop for Christ's sake. It's a setting where the consequences of unchecked power, exploitation, and genocide have led to the world’s near-destruction. And at its heart, it’s a world focused on survival in the harshest of times, but (in the novels anyways) it’s also a world where hope remains - where characters and groups still strive to make a difference and fight for a better future in spite of certain death. It’s pretty disappointing that WOTC seems hesitant to embrace Dark Sun because of its darker themes but when I look at how many of my students are drawn to series like Berserk which also tackles controversial and difficult subject it’s clear that young people today are not only capable of grappling with these themes but are eager to engage with them. I believe many of my students would find it a compelling setting, especially given how deeply its themes align with their own concerns about the future.
Hi there. Thanks for watching and the response to my video. It does seem to be the direction WotC has taken in the effort to gain a new target audience. They have such a great array of stories and worlds to build from but seem hung up on some of the ‘modern audience’ issues of the day. It’s grew that your students are reading in their own time. Do you run lunchtime sessions for them as I have a few teacher friends that do?
I feel like they're so afraid they'd be accused of promoting slavery if even one in a thousand players roleplays a sadist and brags about it online that they'd rather kills the setting or neuter it completely just to be sure.
We played Dark Sun when it first came out for several years and I don't remember a single player going down a sociopathic or sadistic road, rather they all wanted to be heroic and do what they could under the terrible circumstances their characters were in. Yes, they sometimes compromised, looked the other way and so on, but they wanted to do good.
@@Dungeonsanddyslexia I used to run an after school game for some of my students when I was working in a middle school, but it was a homebrew setting not dark sun. I haven't run anything for the high schoolers as of yet, been a bit to busy with personal life stuff since then. I'd like to though once things have settled down
@@HamanuOp Totally, it's very much a hero themed game. You could argue it has the same them as A new Hope (oppressed poor taking on the powerful controllers of everything at a small scale). Good to hear it and for the record, I haven't and neither have any of either of my groups
