    I think it might be because your choke is on that’s usually the cause and idling is no good you got too run the engine underload for at least a 1/2 hr on the actual road too clean and burn up your carbon also throw in some fuel cleaner in the tank that will help break up the buildup in the carb

    I had a Jeep truck in 1964 and could not get it to run over 1500 rpm. after much replacement of fuel pump, carb, points plugs, etc etc. I took off the air cleaner and it run like a wild goat. The pan on the air cleaner, held on by a wing nut had a piece of 1/4" felt that had lost the adhesive that held it to the pan and it would collapse over the intake and choke the engine. I had a Jeep station wagon while working for a mining company in 55. Those were really good vehicles. Certainly worth restoring.

The engine is still in use for the Grumman postal van. The Continental 226-cubic-inch L-head straight-6 as on this Willys was replaced by the Buick V6 after 1961.

      In part 2 I dropped the gas tank. There was a lot of moisture in it. That and ethanol fuel that had sat too long seems to be the main issue. I will continue to work on dialing it in as it could still be a little rich. Thanks for the suggestion. Always appreciate input.

  • @philhermetic
    @philhermetic 2 года назад

    Looking at the spark plugs the engine is running way too rich on the mixture, and there is a misfire which may be the low comp cylinder, which could be just the rings stuck. See if you can adjust the carburettor for weaker mixture, and take it for a run to get the enginr really warmed up and the rings may free off and stop the smoking. What a really bootiful old truck!! I love it! Your video was fine! Phil, UK

    Sure is a pretty truck. Spent many years with all sorts of different Willy's jeep products. Did you do a vacuum test? That's important. That will tell you if you've got an issue with the valves. Your compression tester should be perfectly fine, it's doing what you need it to do.

    • @brokejeepnut1905
      @brokejeepnut1905 2 года назад

      Hmm Do you mean a leak down test? Or actually checking vacuum from a vacuum line?

    • @JeffBishop_KB3QMT
      @JeffBishop_KB3QMT 2 года назад

      @@brokejeepnut1905 I'd use it to diagnose engine problems. If possible, it's best to screw a barb into the intake manifold, but you can use a vacuum line. This can tell you if you've got sticky valves, which would drop compression, or a number of other different issues or problems. A vacuum gauge is a great tool. You can always use it to set the carburetor correctly as well. Here's a link to Holley: ruclips.net/video/NrnzD7PgoHI/видео.html

    I was taught to use a short length of hose and blow out around the plugs to make sure there wasn't any dirt of debris to fall down inside the engine when pulling the spark plugs. I've never seen anyone in a video doing that, but that's how I was taught, especially with flat heads.
