Biggest Bass of the year on my Vibe Yellowfin 100 (Black Creek)
Sometimes when you go fishing with a plan, things end up going the way you think they will. Other times they dont, and you end up getting some fun surprises in the mix. This was definitely one of those days, as I had intended to try and catch some more monster pike out of the creek, but I ended up landing the biggest bass of the year on a new bait!

There's fish hiding under the duck blinds on Cayuga Lake!
Просмотров 38621 день назад
This was a bit of an odd trip to Cayuga Lake. I went there with a plan, and none of that plan was really working. I really had to work to get a few fish into the boat, but I was able to find some spots where things ended up working out. One of those spots was a duck blind of all places. I had talked to some folks repairing one on the Seneca River about a month back, and they told me a lot of ba...

This was an interesting fishing experience, as I was able to fish 2 bodies of water from the same launch point. Out near Henrietta NY and the Ballantyne bridge, there is a little park that allows access for boats and kayaks to the Genesee River and Black Creek. As it turns out both bodies of water definitely have fish to be caught! Vibe Yellowfin 100 Kayak: www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/vibe-yel...

    Can you tell us good place for fishing salmon?

    • @FISHINGwithGREG
      @FISHINGwithGREG 7 дней назад

      Theres a few good options around for salmon fishing, and they can be broken into 2 categories. For Pier fishing, you got The Charlotte Pier, The Pier at Irondequoit Bay, Point Breeze and Olcott, all of those places have trout and salmon that come in this time of the year. The other category is dam fishing, and the two that I know that always fill up with both fish and people are Burt Dam out near Olcott, and the Oak Orchard Dam near waterport NY. Any of those spots are options for salmon and trout fishing. Hope this helps!

      Hey there! theres a few good spots for sure. Irondequoit bay ended up being a decent spot for me this year for bass, and later on in the year you can go for trout and salmon there too from what I've been told. there is a marina over by Sea Breeze where there is also a pier, fishing off that pier is great. Earlier in the year when they first fill up the canal, definitely try to fish the Erie canal around brockport, theres alot of good stretches with parking areas there from brockport going towards holley. And theres a place called henpeck park too thats another good canal spot. Also, there seems to be alot of fish in black creek over by balantyne park, where there is a boat launch, but they got a dock there that people fish off of, ive caught big fish not far away from it on my kayak. Hope this helps!! I go to quite a few places for shore fishing on this channel, i just happend to get a lot of kayak fishing in the past couple months. normally earlier in the year I do shore fishing.

      When I found out about it 2 years ago it totally changed my outlook on fishing. I had barely caught any bass up until that point in my life, but after I started fishing the whopper plopper everything changed, definitely a high confidence bait! And the pike are a ton of fun, we also have Chain Pickeral too which are a close cousin to Pike. If you ever take a trip to NY, Cayuga lake has a great Northern Pike and Chain Pickeral Population, as well as being the best bass lake in NY. Somebody just caught the state record bass there this year, I think it was over 12 pounds.

    • @FISHINGwithGREG
      @FISHINGwithGREG Месяц назад

      Hi there, to help answer that question better I would highly reccommend reading through the DEC Fishing guide book, specifically the sections on bodies of water from around where you live. It has very in depth details as to exactly what fish you can and can't keep, both by species and the size of the fish, and what time of the year you are you allowed to catch and keep. You can get a physical copy of this when you get a fishing license, but you can also download a PDF to your phone, which is what I always have on me. Generally speaking, Largemouth and Smallmouth out of the Erie canal have to be at least 12 inches to keep, with a max of 5 keepers per day during the open season for bass.

    It looks gigantic in the video! But even 3 ft handle and 20 inch hoop does put it close to 5 ft. .. I'm used to my 14 in handle and about 15 in loop. It even collapses. But... In the end it's what works best for you that matters for sure... Yes, that's a long paddle for sure. You can also put kayaks at The park in Cayuga ... That will get you a lot closer to the Rail bridge.

    • @FISHINGwithGREG
      @FISHINGwithGREG 2 месяца назад

      I usually always put in at Harris park, I think I got 3 videos uploaded where I do. This was something a little different I did so I would force myself to get some dock fishing practice in along the way. I will admit though its nicer launching at the mud lock simply because theres enough parking and I got a spot where I can do my extended unloading and setup process. I wish Harris park had more parking spots designated for kayakers.

  • @vector8222
    @vector8222 2 месяца назад

    Enjoyed your videos and congrats on the good trip out to Cayuga... Been there a few times myself. One thought... The net you're using is much more suited to catching 40 inch muskie out of a big deep v boat or a big carp from a steep bank. I would get a net that has a much smaller loop and depth , maybe a handle that's only 15-18 inches. Holding that giant 5 ft net you have out horizontal in a kayak is definitely going to tire you quickly. I just added a short length of pool noodle for flotation to mine but they also make ones with built-in flotation. You'll also save a lot more room in your kayak.

    • @FISHINGwithGREG
      @FISHINGwithGREG 2 месяца назад

      So that net is actually one of the standard Frabill bass nets, I guess the angle for some of the shots makes it look a little bigger but that net only has a 20 inch hoop and a 3 foot handle. Its a fairly popular kayak fishing net. I know a lot of people elect to go with a short handle to scoop the fish right next to the kayak, but I do like having the ability to reach when I need to. I also like to dip and rest the fish between shots, if im measuring and trying to get pictures, so being able to lay that handle width wise across my kayak to keep the fish in the water helps out a lot. And the weight of the net normally isn't an issue, I own 4 nets and its actually the lightest one that I own, it was the paddle I did to get out to that spot that destroyed my left shoulder lol. The video was already running on the long side so I left out the 35 minutes it takes to get to that railroad line area from the docks. Its a lot of paddling!

      This is right over at the very tip of Irondequoit Bay, Past Seabreeze and a part of the Irondequoit Bay Small Boat Harbor. If you see it on google maps its called "Irondequoit Bay Outlet Pier and Beach". The left side of the pier is Lake Ontario itself. The channel that feeds into the bay normally has a bridge over it during the late fall, winter and early spring. They retract it during the summer so that boats have easy access to the lake from the local marinas. You can even fish off of the bridge because its swung to the side of the bay that I was fishing on, its a really cool area!

    Oof that lure is just not appropriate for that piece of water. That's a smallmouth and panfish area, a rooster tail would have put some fish on the line. As for the spot above the waterfall - it's pointless for exactly the reason you demonstrated. They built a dock there that has become useless. Small tube jigs just below the dam - micro-spinners in the open waters downstream from there. The Oatka is also full of trout - just not in that area.

      Theres a little park area to the northeast in town called State Street Park, that goes along the canal. If you go across the bridge on Horan Road which is to the right of the Park, theres a small parking area on the other side. Then you can walk down along the canal path there, which is actually a huge Aquaduct, it goes right over the falls. Its wild to see.

The people in the clerks office when I got the permit were super nice too, it was a very easy thing to take care of before heading up to the reservoir. I definitely learned my lesson though about clothing options, while I had the big boots on I definitely would have liked some Jeans and a long sleeve shirt lol. Very dense trails but so many fishing spots if you can get to them through the woods.

    Very nice fish I actually go to mays point a lot but never get anything good do you have any tips for what lures i should use to catch some big fish?

    • @FISHINGwithGREG
      @FISHINGwithGREG 4 месяца назад

      I caught that guy on a Rapala Rippin Rap Size 6, the size 7 will also work especially for larger fish, both are a great lure. I caught a decent amount of largemouth on that as well. I use the color pattern thats called moldy fruit in that murky water, ive also caught a fish on a Voo doo Haze colored one. For larger lures, I do love the Bandit Walleye Deep Series, and those do dive close to 20 feet if your fishing just off the water. And the lure I used to catch my salmon on last year was a Rapala DT 16, which can target a ton of species, especially in the Helsinki shad color, which seems to be one of the main ones for that series. Its a fairly natural color that works in both clean and murky water cause of that chartreuse stripe. I had a guy at Bass pro shop show me the 40 plus inch Muskie he caught on that one, so definitely can catch a diversity of fish on it. And if you dont mind catching a gar or two, you can throw a 1/4 ounce jig head with any curly tail grub on it, preferably a brighter color, and you can hook into alot of fish down in the waterfall area. I hope this helps!

    • @FISHINGwithGREG
      @FISHINGwithGREG 4 месяца назад

      A good shallow crankbait too is the bomber Long A 15A, its 4.5 inches in length and only dives to about 2 feet. I caught a decent number of bass on that one later in the season there actually up top of the dam, fishing on the left side.

    • @connormeyer553
      @connormeyer553 4 месяца назад

      This helped out a lot. Thank you. And yea I did see you hooked on to a shockingly good amount of gar in the waterfall area with the jig I will definitely try that, do you think I should try the water fall area and where you were in the video or down at the Erie Canal behind the River

    • @connormeyer553
      @connormeyer553 4 месяца назад

      What I meant by that is what is the best place to fish at mays point?

    • @FISHINGwithGREG
      @FISHINGwithGREG 4 месяца назад

      I think that the upper and lower platforms on each side of the upper dam, and the right side of the waterfall are all good areas to fish. The canal I have tried before, but we never even got a carp up there when we tried it. I have good luck fishing in canal areas with rocky shorelines, areas that have been built up with cement walls I don't think I've ever had as much luck with. Now if you do fish in the canal I have been doing excellent on a weightless wacky rig worm closer to where I live. Those videos I will be uploading pretty soon. A lot of lures are made for specific situations, but you cant go wrong with a worm just about anywhere. Hope that helps!

      Thank you! yeah those spinnerbaits have been doing great so far this year. I've also been experimenting with different color worms too for a wacky rig setup, and it seems like they will hit most natural colors. if you wanna try something really different, try a whopper plopper and go for a topwater fish. Topwater Blowups are the funnest thing to see in fishing. skim them along the side of the canal about 8 feet away from shore.

Theres a video I did later in the year where I caught 9 fish on just a wacky rig in the morning. That trio of lures, the wacky rig, whopper plopper and spinnerbait has caught me about 98 Percent of my fish this year

      I used to get it tangled all the time on my anchor line before I put the double header on there. Since I added that, I havent really had an issue with it this year. It keeps it up above everything else in the front. The only thing it can get caught on a little bit is the front carrying handle, but thats much easier to get it off of then rope. Highly reccomend that setup.
