Brian's setup is fascinating. Every piece of gear is modified and improved (even if it's just the power supply), and most of his gear is a custom built analog mastering console, which features a compressor (based on the design of the SSL bus compressor) and an Passive Equalizer. When you bring him your digital file to get mastered, it gets converted to analog with a D/A Lavry Gold, goes through his mastering console, and then gets converted back to digital through his A/D Lavry Gold. Both Larry's are clocked by Antelope's flagship digital clock. He often doesn't even touch the compressor, and has a very minimalist approach to EQ. To get it loud, he slams the audio into the A/D Lavry Gold until it is well into the red (using it's "Soft Saturation" algorithm, with "DC Removal" turned on). If he needs more warmth, he has an Empirical Labs FATSO (which is usually turned off). If he needs even more volume, he'll add a decibel or so with the WAVES L2 after the A/D Lavry Gold. If he needs even more tweaking, he has some classic Steinberg plugins that he opens up in WaveLab.

Excellent. Looks very much like a studio I did several years ago. The diffusion panel looks like it took quite a bit of work to make, but short cuts lead to bad sound. Excellent job, well done.

What kind of reverb are you using for this track? Specifically the rim shot? Analog or DAW?

is the diffusor on the ceiling and wall made out of wood? just want to clarify because im planning on building my own. cheers

It's a bass trap and a space-array. The bass trap (against the ceiling, in red) is 2 inches of absorption material with a 2 inch gap behind that. . Hanging just below the bass trap is a wood space-array, by Auralex. My understanding is that it makes the bass trap work better by directionalizing the sound. Space Arrays are also used to make smaller rooms sound bigger. I'm a little skeptical of the space arrays abilities, but it sure looks awesome. . The bass traps definitely does it's job.

What does the thing on your ceiling do?

@AcousticMusicPage Thank you. I'm pretty happy how this song came out. The acoustic guitar is a Steve Stills signature Martin, there's a real Rhodes 73 key electric piano in there (which I played ;)… lots of real live percussion, and the vocal harmonies are very jazzy. I'm proud to have recorded and mixed this one.
