Framing and MEP inspection. What will I find?
Просмотров 45921 день назад
A pre-drywall inspection involves inspections of the Electrical, Mechanical, and plumbing as well. All of these need to pass first before approving framing.

Wood destroying insects on a log home
The double lvl is bearing on the wall it self with a knotch.
Shit, I’d like to hire you when I have a custom house built
The missing truss was used for the hitching post out front. 😮😮😮
Only going to comment because a lot of comments are critical of the work or the inspector. 1. You cannot claim that the "Inspector Homes" is wrong / "does not know what he is talking about" without knowing the adopted building code of the town/ county where the home is built. What is acceptable in one town may be totally different in the next town over. The East end of San Miguel County, CO has some of the most stringent building codes in the USA. The West end of the county has no building codes. None, zero, nada. In the west end only electrical work must comply with Colorado state code. 2. As for quality of work. Every stud issue can be addressed pretty quickly. Needs about a $600 in metal plates added. Need to contact floor joist manufacturer. Tell them of the issue / send pics and then follow the fix they prescribe. They will send a stamped engineers letter approving the fix. Need to contact roof truss manufacturer. Tell them of the issue / send pics and then follow the fix they prescribe. They will send a stamped engineers letter approving the fix. Need to confirm dryer is heat pump. Dryer venting to outside are a leading cause of home fires. Gas lines and make up air for furnace ... looks like plumber did not finish job. Plumber needs to come back and finish. 3. Builder is smart to hire "Inspector Homes" to view and catch issues before having city inspector come to home. City inspectors want to come 1 time and see work done correctly. They dont want to have to visit a house 3 times fail the builder and electrician and plumber 3x and see shoddy work. Overall house does not need to be torn down. It just needs a bunch of things fixed. Before calling for city inspection. Before they are covered over with drywall.
Wow those should be dealt with as you build. This is what happens when you let anyone call themselves a carpenter. Make carpenters do 4 year apprenticeships and you wont see this. P.s i e cut myself on gussets.
Umm so basically they gotta tear that house down and start over. Jeez I would hire a different contractor next time. Heard they sell good ones at Walmart.
Fascinating! Dryer may be heat pump based which has no vent.
Would you prefer these codes be more stringent? Is there any limit to the amount of "safety" that can be incorporated into these codes? Hell, why not just jump to commercial building codes in residential? Can't be too safe, right? 🙄
What IS an acceptable fix for the notched joist flange under the tub?
Pre Drywall inspection includes all vertical penetrations in framing for electric, hvac and plumbing must be sealed with an approved fire blocking caulk like Red Flame Safe. There was none in the video. You fail inspection for that everywhere.
Another inspector thats never been on the tools. Tell me how youre supposed to get a 2" drain pipe through a stud without taking out 40% of the stud you have got to get a grip there buddy. And youre marking them on 1/8" on the damn wall plates. Absolute nightmare of a inspector you got bullied in high school 100%
Never heard of a Stud Shoe before. Seems like a legit fix for many situations I've seen. Learn something new every day. This video was very informative. Framing was wrong, plumbing was wrong, electrical was wrong. HVAS was wrong. Was there a single trade that did their job correctly? Wow.
Just irritates the crap out of me! Why can't contractors just perform quality work?
You pointed out the need for a nail plate but did you see the romex cable there that had a 90 degree hard bend? It needs a soft curve
In all my years, you can always rely on the plumber to hack framing in his way, instead of telling the project manager about the conflict when he lays out. They just spin up the hole hawg and go through whatever needs to be drilled. The plumber boss is not going to be happy with that huge back charge.
It's so confusing to see them drill holes in the studs for electric and do all that work, just to skip random studs and have to pull the wire back through the fix it.
The saying is "Do it nice or do it twice"
1:26 what if it never rains during that inspection window? Could these issues persist through the time the walls are closed up?

What a joke
Structural Engineering Company - We see so many of these terrible chopped up structures.
So what needs to be done with the notched tgi joists to get them back to code?
Ahhh those are fine. Ask any engineer. If it’s real bad it needs to be replaced, which is awful.
Homebuilder here. I make our plumbers “header them off.” That means they cut out the joist portion where the cord was hit/notched and perpendicularly add a joist on each side of the cut, on joist hangers. Creates a box and distributes the weight onto the uncut joists. When possible (and instead): we’ll scab the joist webbing with a 3/4 to 1.5” osb, plywood or lumber board, with glue and screws. This stiffens the joist portion that has been cut. It’s not proper code, but if the scab is long and well done then most inspectors won’t have an issue with it. I believe it’s stronger than originally this way, and also doesn’t distribute the weight onto the other joists. If in a crawlspace, you can add a post under the notched area and vertically distribute the weight onto a concrete block. We also prefer this method over the boxing out of a joist. If you count the cost of a block and post, it’s almost the same as the boxing hangers and joist materials.
Great info! I can’t believe the contractor and subs don’t know what’s required! These issues will surely cost the contractor some big dollars!
I live in a small town full of stuck up 2 face people well 90% and they would pay a cheap guy to do it wrong 10 times and tell the guy that does it right 1 time that he's to picky and expensive and most of them graduated.
These idiots aren't qualified to build a dog house.
I wish they had an inspector like that when they built my house. The contractors got away with a lot, took me a lot to fix them all over the years, especially with the stucco it was over sanded and the scratche coat was to dry with the scratches because you could peel the brown coat from it and cracks every wherever and for my dryer vent was a gutter down spout I think people who worked on it were on cracks or something.
Good grief! How bad has construction gotten lately!?!?
Is there a national set of standards all builders must comply with? Seems like states all have different standards.
No.
This is terrible construction. Looks like 20" centers. Really? Massachusetts uses 24" centers. Most use 16" centers.
Give me a break on your middle of the stud measurements. Literally much ado about nothing when it comes to electrical. You literally called out one drain that has the plates on both sides of it. Seriously, drywall screws are 1.25 inches long. Drywall is standard .5 inch thick. That means you need less than an inch of stud, not an inch and a quarter. I guess the bureaucratic code makers cant to simple math, but Im sure you can, right?
Wow. So much stuff wrong in a new build. Crappy contractors!
One of the many new $350,000+ homes now available at Waterproof Cardboard Estates. See a realtor now!
Dryer vent reduced?? It was elongated. Those dryer vent boxes are used all the time and they pass code.
Inspectors exist for a reason, they aren't the bad guy unless of course if you're the type of builder that habitually cuts corners. Nice video, well done!
Great job. Thanks for sharing 👍
But thats how we do it in Mexico! You get what you pay for.
One major thing you didn’t address for pre drywall is, none of the bottom plate or top plate penetrations were caulk with flame safe fire stop caulk. Not to mention fire stops in the framing where required. This looks like the builder and subs first job. It’s going to be very expensive to remedy.
What a 💩 show
Well seed more of this as the industry hires cheaper less experienced immigrants from countries that have few if any construction standards applied.
that's a win for Capitalism, tho
Serious oversights. No corners can be cut to fix these major issues. Especially the gas HVAC, Hot Water Heater, missing/compromised truss/joists.
I'm a DIYer and know half of these mistakes. A tradesman has no excuse other than being lazy.
OUCH!! $$
The zip system flashing tape was also improperly lapped @ 2:08
Cellphone gimbals are $100
Most home inspectors have no idea what they are doing.
Workers can’t follow manufacturer specifications or blueprints if they can’t read.
There were a few egregious violations there Bob
The builders are incompetent!!
As far as the gas appliances go. You are wrong when you spoke about gas units needing air from the living space to operate. Every gas boiler, furnace, water heater, I have seen is a closed or "sealed" combustion system as they take in air from the atmosphere through a pipe. Either with a coaxle pipe set or a parallel pipe set.
If I had a dollar for every time a plumber or electrician ruined one of my floor trusses or wall panels, I could have retired years ago.
Awesome wish you would have done my pre drywall inspection. Lol!
