I tried minimalism and failed

And in chasing those fruits, we forget the most important part - the journey. Today I share with you my journey of adopting minimalism into my life, my failures, and what I've learned along the way. You should look at subscription creep! That's a big problem for me and my husband. I'm a minimalist and he wants to subscribe to EVERYTHING. Like, there just aren't enough hours in a day to watch all these streaming services, right? So maybe that's also another subject - how to be a minimalist married to or partnered to a maximalist! LOL

    how does reducing the amount of clothes you own mean less need to do laundry lol if i dont wanna do laundry i buy more clothes or more sheets foir the bed

    • @drew-alexander
      @drew-alexander День назад

      I own significantly less clothing than most folks, so I pretty much have enough to cover my day to day wear for, I want to say, 1 to 2 weeks. When I had a lot more clothes, I was constantly doing more laundry because I was dealing with different materials, louder colors that could bleed to my lighter items, and the clothing I was buying tended to need to be washed after nearly every wear (namely, t shirts). Nowadays, I still put my t shirts in the hamper after one wear, but my other pieces I will wear multiple times. It also reduces the amount of time it takes me to do and fold laundry. Hope that helps clarify things, thanks for your comment :)

      @Veronicat13 День назад

      @@drew-alexander yeah that makes sense with having different materials and stuff. I suppose I already have the amount of clothes for about 1-2 weeks but laundry still isn't fun, but it's a must haha

    I like the tip about reducing friction to cleaning. Similar to the vacuum, this year I bought a spray mop that looks good enough to leave in the open. Now I mop on the go and the floors are alot easier to maintain than a big weekend task with a bulky mop and bucket.

    • @drew-alexander

    First, congrats on 100 subscribers! Way to go, bud! For me, what has helped me quite a bit is that I handle things as they are used. So, for example, as I get my mail and enter my home, I flip through what is important and what is junk mail (which is usually the case). Then, instead of setting it all on the table or my slot for mail, I recycle the junk mail and keep the important mail. This way, when I go to grab the mail, I already know it's all important. Also, before I go to bed, I make sure my office, kitchen, and dining area are all clutter-free. There's something about waking up in the morning and entering your space having it all clean. :) Much nicer than waking up to a natural disaster. Just a few tips that have helped me. :)

    • @drew-alexander
      @drew-alexander 2 дня назад

      Thanks for your comment, Ted! I try to do something similar with my desk, kitchen, and dining/living room. It may not be picture perfect, but I try to clean things off the surfaces. It really is so refreshing to wake up to a clean kitchen for breakfast, and a clean table for eating that breakfast. 😃

    Hey Drew! I always look forward to your videos. The editing on this one was amazing, especially the start where you "rewound" the last six years of your life. Very clever montage! :) I was saddened to hear that you left your Christian faith, but that's personal, so I shall not pry. :) I'll pray instead of pry. See what I did there? ;) At 57, I just recently got into minimalism and I'm very much enjoying it. Sure, I have a lot of clutter, but I'm happiest when I see I have empty shelves and empty drawers. LOL! Even my walls are partially bare. I just feel more comfortable when I go into a room with a lot of SPACE. I can't really explain it. I hope you'll share your minimalism journey along the way. Perhaps I'll pick up some tips. Have a wonderful weekend!

    • @drew-alexander
      @drew-alexander 9 дней назад

      I'm also the same way when it comes to clean walls & drawers. It stresses me out whenever I open a drawer and there's a bunch of loose stuff rolling around, or when there's just a bunch of stuff sitting out on surfaces!

  • @drew-alexander
    @drew-alexander 9 дней назад

    If you're a minimalist, do you continue to struggle with acquiring more stuff?

    • @starlightviga
      @starlightviga 7 дней назад

      I'm the opposite in style. A Maximalist! However, even with a super colorful home filled with art, I still declutter. I want to be minimalist in terms of human-y stuff which I think is just intentional living really.

      Clothing is something I keep as minimal as I can - I can easily say the least minimal part of my life is my collection of coffee mugs.... I love coffee mugs. 😂

    • @ChrisBarnesXYZ
      @ChrisBarnesXYZ 9 часов назад

      I like how you mentioned minimalism filled a void left by religion. I think you really need to explore that thought. I'm 100% Atheist but grew up Methodist... so very Methodist. One thing I can tell you is that Christians will make mistake after mistake after hypocritical law-breaking mistake but still call themselves Christian because Christianity (or any religion) isn't a prize you win but a state of mind. You mess up, you recognize, you adjust, and you move on. Minimalism is EXACTLY like that. Recognize when you slip, analyze why it happened, make a plan to do better going forward, and move on! Minimalism, like religion, should be a guiding principle, not a how-to guide where you're excommunicated if you screw up. So you're not a Josh Milburn or Ryan Nicodemus. Who is? Literally just them. Take in their message but don't feel like a failure if your whole life doesn't fit in a duffel bag.

    Thanks for the video, Drew. Not sure if you're open to people commenting things that helped them, but here goes. :) When I was younger, what helped me tremendously was consolidating all of my credit cards into one card and then closing the other accounts. What I did was I waited until I got some type of offer: "Get a cash advance on this card and get 0% interest to pay it back for 12 months!!" I would then get the cash advance, use that cash to pay off the other cards, and then get the amount I got and divided it by 11. I would then make sure I paid 1/11 each month so it would have zero interest. The reason I did 11 and not 12 was just in case I needed that cushion! :)

    • @drew-alexander
      @drew-alexander 16 дней назад

      Love hearing your insight, Ted! I've done something similar with balance transfer offers, myself! Took advantage of a few to get my debt off of interest-bearing cards so I'm not adding onto the pile while trying to pay it off. It has also definitely helped reduce strain on my budget by allowing me to reserve some cash that I was putting towards multiple, high minimum payments. Thanks again for sharing your insight :)

    Good thoughts, Drew. Thank you. As a retired teacher, I am learning that I simply can't buy everything I want. One thing that has helped me is actually revisiting things I already own. Too often, I forget I may have something buried in my closet that will satisfy the "itch" of getting something new. It's rediscovery, if you will. So I find something new and think, "Whoa... this is pretty cool. I want to play with it a bit." Unrelated - do you use a teleprompter? You're very articulate in your speaking and I was just curious if you use a teleprompter, as it's something I've been considering. Thanks again for the video. Looking forward to the next one.
