    I bought OLED and feel like its too dim. I have to turn it to vivid to get any light. The standard setting feels like the minimum brightness I could stand without going nuts. I'm taking it back and getting the Bravia 9 so i can have *close* to an OLED in color/contrast and still keep brightness options.

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64 9 дней назад

      No, you will need a separate Controller Pak for those games. However, you can get one of the BlueRetro N64 Bluetooth adapters that has a Controller Pak built in. Check out this video I made if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/y4N2-F9sYyo/видео.htmlsi=S9gsfb3ADdB3xOBt

      @@FairyKid64 Thanks! I thought it might be built in as a feature for the EverDrive 64 X7... too bad. Are you sure? As for wireless bluetooth controllers, nothing really matches a genuine N64 controller, though, does it? They have something like an 80-85% range and the other controllers go to 100% on the joystick, so they are too sensitive I think. I think I will buy a Forever Pak 64 then.

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64 8 дней назад

      @@fighterpilot12As far as I know, the Everdrive X7 doesn't have a Controller Pak built in - but I'd be happy to be proven wrong! As far as the stick range goes for wireless controllers, you're right - modern controllers like the Switch Pro Controller or the PS5 controller don't have quite as much as the original N64 controllers do. However, I personally haven't had any problems with stick sensitivity using these controllers. All that being said though, my favorite way to play the N64 is with the wireless BlueRetro adapter, and an officially made Nintendo NSO N64 controller. Those things are AWESOME, and have the exact same range as the original controllers with the added benefit of the control stick not wearing out really quickly. Have you tried that controller before?

    • @fighterpilot12
      @fighterpilot12 8 дней назад

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64 8 дней назад

      @@fighterpilot12they are. On the original controller, the bottom of the control stick would grind into a plastic bowl, hence why there would be a lot of white dust and loose control sticks a lot of times. This new NSO N64 controller has sensors more like the GameCube controller - just with the same shape and range of the original N64 controller. It's the best of both worlds in my opinion. It's my all time favorite controller right now!

    Thanks for putting your vid together, I watched twice just to get as much info as possible. If I may - I have a question about my setup. I have a N64 modded with the RetroGem (HDMI) and the output from there is “DV-Direct” which means it’s just passing through the 240p signal to the 4K. From there, I used the default N64 profiles but I can’t seem to get my setup to look as crisp as yours. You have 75 inch OLED, and I have a 80inch Neo-QLED, and it still looks quite blurry. Now I can’t do auto-phase and auto-gain since it’s going via HDMI versus composite, but you are also using an RGM mod, and mine is not. Is that the big reason why it doesn’t look as clear you think? I thought the RetroGEM was to essentially used to deblur the built-in blur effect, followed by outputting the native 240p without anything else. Unfortunately I have a NS2 serial number so a RGB mod is going to be a bit more expensive and harder to solder. Any suggestions for a HDMI modded N64 to RT4K setup?

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64 10 дней назад

      Great questions! So, the auto phase and auto gain features are not needed for HDMI sources because the HDMI signal is digital, and digital means exact. In other words, your N64 is already telling the RetroTINK 4K exactly what to draw. Digital signals are contained, limited, and exact. Analog signals like RGB on the other hand are unlimited, so the RetroTINK 4K can auto sample and auto phase to find the optimal places to take samples from the analog signal and convert it into digital. Analog signals look awesome on analog TVs like CRTs, but your digital HDMI will probably be just as good on your Neo-QLED. So, long story short, I wouldn't worry about RGB modding your N64 if you already have the RetroGEM. As far as Neo-QLED vs. OLED, I haven't ever compared the two, but how are the black levels on your TV? When a scene is completely black, can you still tell the TV is on? From what I understand, QLED and OLED are VERY similar... Then for the scaling, if you're doing the direct output, that should be identical to the RGB resolution of 240p I was using in the video. One advantage you have over my setup in the video too is that you can force the N64 default video blur off. I personally have grown to like it, so I usually keep it on. As far as sharpness goes, the default profile of the RT4K is very sharp. My custom profile in this video is actually meant to make it not as sharp - so everything just kind of smooths over like on a CRT. If you set the same settings as I did, in the video, I would think your output would look the same. The only big difference is the display type of our TVs. Maybe there's some settings you could change on your actual TV too...

    • @coolchapstickbro7820
      @coolchapstickbro7820 9 дней назад

      @@FairyKid64 Thanks for the detailed response. Thanks for the clarity with digital vs. analog. I didn't think of it quite like that. Also, I didn't think about the TV settings... I'll have to take a look at that. The black levels with this specific 8K Neo-QLED Samsung TV, is stunning. In the basement, even at night, I can NOT tell when the TV is on or off if there is anything black. OLED is better displayed for contrast and they say that even with QLED you will see visible light even when it's black...I cannot. Even dark films like Dune 2, you just can't tell if it is on or off. It is a super TV indeed, but also more than $3K. I''ll take a look at 4K profile settings after I take a look at the TV settings. If I have any updates I"ll reply back here just as FYI for you. Thanks again for the response and detailed videos.

But yeah - an Everdrive is cool because you can have all your games saved on an SD card, and never have to change the cartridge! You can also try homebrew games and really cool ROM hacks of classic games like Zelda OOT, Mario 64, etc... It's really quite the cool piece of tech!

But the added features like increased internal resolution and not having to use old hardware is interesting. I bought a cheap everdrive like this about 4 years ago. Menu and everything else,even the color of the cart looks the same. I added a bunch of rom hacks and whatnot to it and even after 4 years it still works as good as it did when i first got it. I've used it on an original snes,retron 2 and the analogue snt. Only issues I've encoutered were a few games like Street Fighter Alpha that wouldn't work on the Retron 2 but that seems to be a Retron 2 thing. Otherwise it's been a great device. Complete compatibility on the actual snes and snt or at least from the roms I've tried.

      Street Fighter Alpha 2 uses an enhancement chip. It won't work on this item, or even on the original Super Everdrive. You need the FXPak Pro or maybe the SD2SNES clone to run the rom

    Great video ! The difference between the two is that Krikzz loads games instant. Clones cannot be upgraded you stuck on that FW. I personally have a clone Sega Mega ever drive and it does da job. but eventually bought the real deal Sega Mega EverDrive. It supports alot of features that are not found on clone flash carts

    Looks like you are using a Mac to organize the SD card. So when you wanted to run your test suite rom you actually chose the invisible file and not the rom you wanted to run. The Mac creates invisible files but on the SNES you will see those invisible files (they all start with a period). If you hold down Command Shift Period you will see those invisible files on the SD card and can remove them so it looks cleaner in your SNES.

      Ah, that makes a lot of sense! Yes, I was using a Mac for this. I usually use Linux, but I was using Mac when I recorded this video. I didn't even notice I chose one of the hidden files in the video. Thanks for pointing this out!

    Ive been considering buying one, but i dunno if i should just wait on a mister clone cause isnt the snes a low frame rate console compared to the others in that era? I have an original console like you, and it is just in a box currently getting no use.😅

      Oh yeah, I don't know for sure how the games stack up as far as framerates go, but I do know that at least as far as the SNES vs. the Sega Genesis (its main rival at the time), the SNES is considered the more powerful system. I personally haven't noticed framerate issues in the games I play, but I also play primarily on CRTs, so that helps smooth everything over too. The NES has significant framerate issues in some games, but I haven't noticed it in SNES games.

      @@bradejensenthat certainly was the debate back in the day. 😆 Yeah, back then I think it was thought by a lot of people that the Genesis was for cool kids, while the Super Nintendo was for babies. That might be why there's still a perception of the Genesis being more powerful even to this day. But from a pure numbers perspective, from what I understand, the SNES technically is a more capable system.

      You do realize that an everdrive cost about $15 AT MOST to make, right? That's if they include chips to make certain games work. They are overpriced and have always been. The whole code to program to make it ready roms is something a monkey can do, it's not that difficult. I hope this is the start of having more cartridges for the retro community because everdrive is overpriced. According to you, it's cheap because they stole work. Ok, well why does $100 for an everdrive seem appealing? Because you can play hundreds of games? Aren't those 100 games "stealing"? I mean, you can back them up but if you think about it, what justifies the $100 price tag for an ever drive without thinking of the 100s of playable games because that isn't their work. Seriously, what justifies the price for an everdrive?

    These are clones of an old Krikzz EverDrive. I believe the advice is to not upgrade the firmware because it will brick the clones. I have one of these and it's OK, I don't mind the loading times too much. The shell on mine was a very tight fit in the console. I sanded quite a bit of plastic off the shell to make it fit properly. Aside from that it's been reliable. I believe by default these will only play games which do not use any enhancement chips, however they usually do have provisions for a DSP-1 chip. These are decent for the money but I would prefer an FXPak Pro instead, those will play almost all games and let you run some cool ROM hacks with CD quality audio and FMVs. There is also a Chinese clone of the SD2SNES, which will also play almost all games, however I've heard that it draws too much current because they overspecc'd a component.
