Excellent review.

Just stumbled across your video after doing the firmware "update" to mine today and finding that the A and B buttons were mismapped and having a Google search, and I didn't get as far as realising it was more than just those two buttons. I updated my BlueRetro from 24.04 to 24.10 as well and wasn't sure which update broke it, but glad to have an answer from your video that it was the RetroFighters "update". I'd been meaning to contact them for a while for a few things that I thought should go into a firmware update, including the rumble issue. In NES and GB games (EverDrive64 X7), there are phantom inputs from these controllers as well. At least directionally that makes them unplayable with these controllers (works with every other one), but don't know if there are other phantom inputs as well as directions. Another oversight by RetroFighters for UltraHDMI, N64Digital and RetroGEM users is that the controller's LED on/off combo is included in these HDMI mods' in-game-reset (IGR) combo. Every time you do an IGR, you toggle the controller's LEDs on/off which is such a nuisance. I don't know if they'll ever properly fix the rumble issue, this mapping issue or either of the other issues I've just raised but I also love the shape and feel of these controllers so I hope they can get it sorted.
Yeah, this controller was so close to being amazing. Thanks for sharing the other bugs you found too. The control stick also has problems. I'm also hopeful they fix this, but who knows...
I did this mod last week and when i tested it i got nothing so i redid the soldering 3 times.... i had it on the wrong channel lol its nice for the price.
Oh no! Well, I guess you got some extra practice in. 😅
My TV is ding that to
Yeah, I think it has to do with the cold weather. Is it cold where you are?
You're a microphone sounds really good what kind are you using
Oh, thanks! Yeah, I ended up upgrading to the Rode Wireless Pro! Here's an Amazon affiliate link if you're interested: amzn.to/3ZTo0Kl
I bought the "KO" SD2SNES (aka FX Pak Pro) cart. Cost me about $90usd/$130cdn. It's pretty darn good, also note that SD2SNES is open source so what you buy on AliExpress is the same as Krikzz version, only difference I can see is the shell quality (I used to own the original Krikzz version). I even updated the OS using the latest version found on the official Krikzz site and it works great. Plays all the special chip game including msu-1 enhanced audio games without issue. Instant game load. Resets to menu with the controller. Saving works great and it also has a save state feature. If you can find the proper bios files then you can even have it act as an actual super gameboy and play GB games on it. Was even able to change the menu theme to something much nicer with absolute ease. Some of these features may need the newest OS to function like the menu theme change. Half the price of the Krikzz version with all the features and compatibility. Even the shipping was fast at about 8-9 days from ordering. The only game I have not been able to start up is Smurfs but that seems (maybe) to be an issue with the game regardless of the flash cart used. I'll also note that "in game hooks" being turned on can make some games not run well or at all but that's easy to turn on or off through the menu. Very recommended.
The TV can't find the sync of the signal
Interesting. Yeah, do you think that would be a bad capacitor?
Bro thank you for this video you explain things nice and clear so even boneheads like me can get it. Your tips helped!
Lol that makes two of us! I'm glad I could help!
37:53 I wished the newer Zelda games have the Majora's Mask death system instead, where the player warps back to the area's entrance upon dying. If that happened, then "Game Over" would be replaced by "Try Again", though latter text didn't appear in Majora's Mask originally.
Yeah, that would be interesting. I wonder if we'll ever get another official game like Majora's Mask again. I think Nintendo could make bank on essentially just creating ROM hacks of OOT and Majora's Mask.
Hall effects and gyro 🔥
Yes! The more I use it, the more I like it!
@@FairyKid64 how does this compare up against the 8bitdo pro?
Thank you for the comparison!!! I guess nothing beats the good old CRT, but I don't want to rely on such outdated tech anymore. It has been more and more difficult to find a good CRT nowadays. I never wanted to mod my N64, and it's good to know that just a Retrotink 4K and a S-Video cable will be enough. I can barely see differences hahaha. A comparison between the CRT with Retrotink 4K using scan lines would be interesting to see in the future!
Yes, I agree - CRTs are harder to find nowadays. That being said, if you know where to look, they do pop up every so often. But yeah, having a solution like the RT 4K is definitely a good option. 👍 I'm glad you found the comparison useful!
I booted up Lucky Number Slevin on my PS2 + JVC TM-H150CG and I was blown away by the colors. I thought "this must be a high quality DVD, right? So I tried it on my PS4 + LG LCD and the colors where so bad. Man, I'm so surprised.

Lol I'm glad it made you laugh. 😂 Good luck on the mod!
@@FairyKid64 hey bud, completed the mod and IT WORKS! Keep up the work!
Is there a way to contact you? I have a problem with my S video cable for the N64 the cable not fit to Retrotink 4k s video hole at all ) :
Oh, bummer. I've had problems with S-Video cables not fitting before, but not on the RT 4K. What brand is your S-Video cable?
Wow! ..surprised to see the perfection in a couple of those GameCube style sticks.. guess it can be found! Ok.. ok.. well shown.
Yes, those custom sticks are pretty amazing. They're fairly easy to make too, once you have all the parts that is.
Well, not that great actually lol.. someone just needs to nail that perfect N64 octagon gate! Then make the stick feel good w a rubber tip identical to the size n shape of the N64 thumb tip, give it some stronger tension w SnapBack like that new GCPro frm RF, boom done lol.. all just makes ya wonder if their even usin the controller test! lol ..Good stuff man, glad I found your channel.
I have high hopes for the new full N64 8bitdo comin soon… they all need to understand that the N64 is literally the only console where this controller test and gate reading matters big time!
Thanks man for your comment! Yeah, to tell you the truth, the 8BitDo Hall Effect N64 stick is so close to being perfect. They just need to iron out some bugs. I contacted 8BitDo about it, sent them the bug videos, and am waiting now. So far, no updates. I might send them another email to bug them about it again.
Great video any experience with the vga to component adapter want to try with component through there is a P.O. Box I can send this to or do you want the name of it
Oh yeah, I actually do have a component to VGA adapter, but I haven't tried it yet with the RT 4K. Is the one you have a special one?
@ it’s not special but it’s the star tech one it works well you’d just need the 3mm jack to rca red and white
Thanks for the in-depth review! We appreciate the feedback!
Thanks for hall effects and gyro
Hey, you bet! Your controller is currently my favorite Switch controller! The more I use it, the more I like it. If those bugs related to the rumble can be fixed, I think this has the potential to be one of the best Switch/GCN controllers ever made!
Just purchased, hope this one gets updates and continuous improvement unlike the original Blade and Battler.
@@dougieshizzle We have our 2nd firmware update uploaded tomorrow on our site with some improvements. Yes, we will continue to improve! :)
@ thank you 🙏
Had one of these on order since May and can't wait to get my hands on it
Yeah, the waiting is intense!
I've finally got mine but have noticed something strange when using the analogue triggers on an original Game Cube. When using the supplied 2.4GHz dongle and playing Metroid Prime the digital press of the left analogue trigger does not work. This is a significant pain as it means you can't scan any items (a major part of the game). The analogue press works as you can navigate the menus using Left and Right triggers. I connected the controller via Blue Tooth using a Game Cube BlueRetro adapter and everything worked as expected including the digital and analogue press for the left trigger. Can you confirm if you get the same behaviour?
Could you give a little bit of explanation about the hall effect?
Yes, I'll try to explain it the best I can. So, most traditional controllers use potentiometers for the control sticks to move your character around. So, if you push the control stick a little bit forward, just a bit of electricity is released by the potentiometer, and your character only walks. If you push the control stick farther, more electricity is released by the potentiometer and your character runs. The problem is that those potentiometers have moving parts inside that rub against each other and eventually break down. When this happens, a lot of times it will start registering that you're pushing the control stick even though you're not. This is called stick drift. Hall effect sticks try to solve this problem by using magnets to tell the position of the stick instead of metal parts rubbing against each other. With magnets, nothing has to touch. I don't know how it works exactly, but it's something along these lines. Long story short, hall effect sticks with magnets should last much longer than potentiometers.
@FairyKid64 okay that makes sense. That reminds me of the old electric race track controller throttles where are the further you push the button for the acceleration it would go faster. But it was just rubbing two things together.
Dude soo many things in this vid I could ask about lol… w the N64 8bitdo mod, can it be used w an original control stick, or do you have to use the new inferior one? I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone use the mod w/out the stick… my vision is to 8bitdo mod but w a rebuilt og stick for the best of both.. you seem like someone that understands these details lol. Thanks.
Thanks! Yeah, the 8BitDo N64 mod kit is compatible with original N64 control sticks - so a rebuilt one should work great. Here's an older video I made testing original N64 sticks in the 8BitDo mod if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/0Bj6LeyrBMc/видео.htmlsi=4GUgLe2WtU4ei57A
Rumble takeaway is interesting… GameCube just had one motor right in the middle of the controller, this has two in the handles.. subtle rumble directly in the center makes the controller feel incredibly balanced when Gamecubin, maybe more to this than we thought.
Yeah, that would make a lot of sense why the rumble felt so much more powerful on GCN mode too.
Damn I can’t wait! ..mines on the way!.. They actually made serious moves w this one, that stick tension blows my mind!.. just what even were the previous BattlerGC controllers compared to this!? ..I never even gave em a thought… This, was an immediate hell yes! Deserves a buy for the effort alone lol. Ima try usin this controller for everything! Great thorough Review, good finds, hopefully theyre able to get some of these minor bugs workd out.
Yes, I hope so too. Thanks!
I thought the analog tuner to pick up over the air broadcast signals defined a TV over a monitor, which just displays a video output
Yeah, I think you're right. TVs have tuners, monitors don't.
I've been thinking about getting this chip, but every place selling it seems very sketchy. 😛
Oh yeah, you definitely want to get it from a reputable source. I left some links in the description for some good places. Personally I bought it from the AliExpress link in the description.
@@FairyKid64 Thanks! I got it from AliExpress too now, and with Klarna 30 days payment, so I only have to pay it if or when it arrives! :--D
S-video can really shine on certain CRTs, it's funny, I prefer S-Video from my N64 on my small 10" CRT shadowmask vs my 21" trinitron (slightly edges out RGB on the same 21" too). For me RGB has none of the spill over that red on edges in S-Video shows, it's immaculate. Btw PAL S-Video is a nice step-up from NTSC S-Video if you have a CRT that supports it, like really closes the gap in on RGB but it's a pain to get setup as you either have to mod an existing cable with some additional caps+resistors or buy an expensive custom made cable.
Very informative! Thank you!
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
The SNES and N64 boxes and manuals never mentioned one peep about those systems taking S-Video. I'm impressed Nintendo thought to include S-Video for the SNES back in 1991, that was still a very new kind of hookup back then and most TVs didn't have it at the time, right?
Yes, you're right. You actually had to pay a premium to get a TV model with that connection. That's why a lot of TVs from back then have a spot on the back for S-Video, but it's filled in with plastic because it was a cheaper model that didn't include it. But a lot of times those cheaper models can easily be modded to restore S-Video support like their more expensive counterparts. But yeah, back then I personally had seen S-Video ports, but I really didn't even know what they were. I just used the cables that came with the system - RF or composite. It's only now that I know how amazing S-Video can be!
@@FairyKid64 I'm especially surprised even as far back as 1991 there were TVs that were S-video ready. And yes on the colorful SNES the S-video really shines!
Thanks! Will try this ASAP!
The 300 series Wegas are really beautiful. It took me years but I got the FV310 model and absolutely love it. Hopefully one day you can find another one
Yes, I agree. They are beautiful. I would like to see a FV310 someday. Thanks for the good wishes!
You still have this Colortrak running to this day? Looks gorgeous. I have one as well I did a quick video on. Grew up on these. Beautiful craftsmanship.
Yes, still running well! They really are beautiful. I want to eventually make enough room for it so it doesn't have to sit outside in the garage.
With the RT4K, just use Enhanced S-Video with the laserbear adapter.
Oh yeah - are you talking about the VGA port adapter?
@@FairyKid64 Yeah, the HD-15 VGA port on the back. Makes S-Video look genuinely 85-90% of the way to RGB. I think it makes RGB modding the N64 unnecessary now. And the adapter is only like $20 I think.
@@MrAdam802wow. With S-Video already looking this good, I'd be really interested in seeing how much better it looks compared to the front port.
How is this thing holding up after over a year? May get one.
To tell you the truth, I hardly use it and just use the single adapters since this one at the time had connection problems with multiple Switch controllers. I've been meaning to see if there is an update to fix it. But here's a video I did on the single adapters I use all the time if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/y4N2-F9sYyo/видео.htmlsi=QtmFWpjKOySza10o
@ thank you
One thing I noticed after filming was that RGB had a slight green tint in Sheik's hair, whereas S-Video was more orange. This could be due to the fact that S-Video still kind of smooths the colors together, whereas RGB is more defined. Not sure though - thoughts? But even so, both look great. 💪
Takeaways from this video; 1) RGB marginally sharper than S-video. 2) CRTs rule when it comes to N64 graphics
Would be good to see a comparison between your oled (retrotink using scanlines and slot masks) and then the crt.
That's a great idea. I'll put that on my list of future videos. =)
@FairyKid64 Thank you, that would be really appreciated
You can whatever you look through a scope. It's not incorrect and it's vague enough.
Most people avoid RPTVs due to concerns over weight, size, and quality, but I found ones after 2001 to be of notably good screen quality when adjusted correctly, especially Sony's Grand Wegas, the Sony Qualis RPTVs, and the Sony SXRD RPTVs.
I can't believe after a few minutes of watching this video it turns out this guy is using this set for gaming!! Good God. This set is designed to watch movies and old tv shows when I purchase mine back in 2007. Why cant you knuckle head gamers do your gaming on today's flat screen tvs...! Bigger screen for the games you want to play ..boys and girls.
Oh yeah, I hear you. These TVs are great for movies! But also for older games designed for them. Flat screens do win CRTs as far as size goes, but CRTs are so much better for things like color depth and motion clarity.
@FairyKid64 I find that hard to believe with technology as it is in these new tvs. Im old school and prefer the crt tvs over flat screen any day of the week. Most of what I view wasn't done in HD. Besides most of todays tv content isn't worth viewing on hd.
@@Chattanoogachoochoo_0105ayeah, I mean, CRTs definitely are not for everyone. All of my family members for example have moved away from CRTs in favor of digital flat screens. Even if I show them a good example like how much better a VHS movie looks on a CRT compared to a digital screen, it's still not enough to convince them to ditch their 77" flat screen. 😂 But yes - like old movies, old games look significantly better on analog displays than digital. There's a lot of cases where digital screens are so sharp that they make the graphics look very blocky and unnatural, whereas on a CRT, everything is smoothed together and it looks much nicer. It's hard to explain without showing it, but maybe I'll make a future video showing that.
@@FairyKid64 ...are you the one that made this video?
@@Chattanoogachoochoo_0105ayes, that's me. One foot in the present and one foot in the past.
Thanks!
I once saw a gray boxy monitor (it had an obscure brand i do not remember) that was used as survelliance monitor of a prison (it had still a prison asset tag on it) it accepted component instead of composite. Strange.
Oh wow - that is strange.
In Germany a company named Loewe did those things quite often. They would re-use most of the chassis of a TV-set, as well as the case to build monitors and terminals for it. I think the design of the one I have even was re-used for a PC clone they sold.
Oh wow - so it was a third party company then that did the modifications?
@@FairyKid64 No Loewe themselves did the modifications. Perhaps except for the video phone that used a Loewe terminal as a video display unit.
Is the faux wood thing a cabinet, or the actual TV? The TV-frame looks nice, but I would definitely ditch the wood if it can be separated.
Yeah, the TV is permanently built into the cabinet. Inside the wood there is nothing else between the tube, electronics, and the wood.
@@FairyKid64 Too bad. But historically good example of bad aesthetic taste of Americans.
@@lovemadeinjapanyeah, the style isn't for everyone, for sure.
how was rumble controller shake hard or to light?
In my opinion, basically perfect. They really nailed it.
Cool monitor!
Thanks!
cool find, yea that looks just like a tv with stripped features. maybe meant for presentation purpose for the school
Yeah, I bet you're right. 👍
Great video! I've got my N64 hooked up with an S-video cable to the Rotrotink4k and every once in a while I'll get a random green line flash across the screen for a split second. Any idea what could be causing this? Otherwise the picture looks great. It doesn't do it on any other inputs connected to the TV or Retrotink.
Huh, that is weird. I don't know if I've seen that problem specifically, but I have seen other graphical glitches that get fixed with updates a lot of times. Have you tried updating your RT 4K?
@FairyKid64 it turns out I needed to switch the latency back to default. That fixed the random green line artifact. Thanks for the response regardless.
