7 - American Western Adventures
I took a solo trek through the American West on my way back home from college this summer. I visited 5 national parks and 6 states on the way and saw countless views and had thousands of experiences on my 10 day solo road trip. I didn’t spend a single of the 10 nights in a hotel, and camped in a tent next to my Toyota Tacoma the whole time, rain or shine, wind or calm. Mountains changed to desert as I progressed onward through the Colorado Plateau, one of the most unique areas in the nation.
You can see photography I’ve taken from this trip and other places on my Instagram, @_jacktarwater.photos

4 - Why the MLB sucks, as a fan.
Просмотров 7395 месяцев назад
Baseball is known as America’s Pastime and lends so many cultural influences to our culture from the iconic White Sox hat as a fashion statement to so many idioms in the English Language. There’s just one problem: allegations are out that baseball is a dead and dying sport. Why is that? Is it true? What’s the problem, and does it have to do more with management or simply the nature of baseball?...

Leap Years are always a little intriguing, as I’ve heard there are other rules about leap years besides every year divisible by 4. This February 29th of 2024 is a leap year, and so it seemed only appropriate to cover the oddities of the SI second, Caesium atoms, oscillations, top precession, and all the other strange Earth Science phenomena that affect how we measure time and count days. The MLB is in a terrible state right now. Predictable and boring ass games, tons of injuries, and a lack of viewer retention are boiling up into one big shit stew. 2019-now has been one of the worst stretches of baseball that I have ever seen. Barely anyone I know even recognizes these players anymore, the playoffs have turned into a snoozefest, and the World Series is now utterly meaningless to me these days. I am taking a break from watching this shell of a sport for a while and moving my focus to better and more productive things that I can actually control the outcome of.

    As someone who's watched MLB since the late 1970s, I miss several aspects of the game that are virtually gone. First, true pitcher's duels are very rare nowadays. Great pitching matchups were once highly anticipated, but now starters rarely pitch longer than 5 or 6 innings. Second, there are no base stealers now who really scare defenses when they get on base, such as Rickey Henderson and Vince Coleman used to do. I do agree that there are no big stars who captivate the American public as there were when I was younger. Ohtani is probably the closest but he can't even speak English. The game has also become more predominantly Latin American...not that there's anything wrong with that per se, but I have a feeling that many American fans (black and white) have trouble finding stars of their own heritage to relate to. One thing I do like is that the shift was banned, which allows more chances to hit into the gaps. I still like the MLB but it's lost a lot of its luster in many ways.

    Terrific overall. One comment. You showed a no valve bugle. I believe it was in the 40s or early 50s that a single valve bugle with a slide was invented It was still in G. It was used for a long rime. To have a picture of that bugle would be nice.

    • @danielcrawford4134
      @danielcrawford4134 6 месяцев назад

      Yes! There were single rotor bugles, then piston-rotor (or PR) horns for a while which had the same diversity as the 2-valve horns of the 80's. Also, there was very little about the horns that limited musical selections in the 70's and 80's--the PR or 2-valve equipment limitation hardly dictated the music. It was just mindset of show designers, as BD, Spirit and others back then showed. Finally, you really cannot give a competent presentation of DCI show development without addressing George Zingali and what he did with Garfield and Star. Cavies were nice, but they were walking in the footsteps of '83-'90 Garfield.

    Small correction: 1999 was the last time BLUE DEVILS ever used a G bugle hornline. Madison Scouts used them all the way up until 2007.

    You’re forgetting about show style bands, not everything is just Drum Corps! Look at HBCU’s FAMU Marching 100. Dr. Foster took style from Michigan and incorporated into the band at FAMU dating back to 1946. Way way before DCI started in 1971. (Keep in mind Drum Corps started as Drum and bell corps with the VFW.)Same goes with Southern University the Human Jukebox. Dr. Issac Greggs 1969. Jackson State University Sonic Boom of The South. Also let’s not forget about Grambling State University World Famed Tiger Marching Band the first band to perform at Super Bowl one! Might want to research some more. It’s not all about Drum Corps! HBCU Band Culture ruclips.net/video/oKZhqoO3d5M/видео.htmlfeature=shared Florida A&M Marching 100- the only HBCU to receive a Sudler Trophy 1985 and the only HBCU to have had a record amount of 600 member band prior to 2012. 600 members in 2011. ruclips.net/video/2_b1829jlN4/видео.htmlfeature=shared FAMU at 2010 Atlanta Classic ruclips.net/video/KU0uTF45RM0/видео.htmlfeature=shared Southern University-5 Superbowls, 2 Rose parade appearances, performance at Radio City Music Hall, Presidential Inaugurations ruclips.net/video/Q-w-buBwAZ4/видео.htmlfeature=shared Southern University at Queen City Battle Of The Bands 2016 ruclips.net/video/CDtdITYvkXk/видео.htmlfeature=shared Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South-Dr. William Davis 1948 NAACP Video image awards, Moto town 50th Anniversary special. ruclips.net/video/NRTM4f0D4AA/видео.htmlfeature=shared Yes I have marched high school band, did Jazz band in College and also Senior Drum & Bugle corps with G-Bugles and also on Drumline during 2017 DCI Southwestern Regional at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio during Sound Sport. To me DCI has lost its touch. Prior to 2016 everything was fine. After 2016 DCI just took a nose dive. Time for DCI to get back where it needs to be. No more Costumes! Get Corp members back into real marching uniforms of what the corps theme is. Not everything is about electronics. But do more research into HBCU bands. You will find more information than what you know. Something they don’t want to teach in schools now and days. I learn a lot about the HBCU Band culture through my dad who was Section leader of the Tubas at Grambling State University Class of 1994 and also from my former director of my College Jazz Band in Baton Rouge, LA from Dr. Eric Baskins who also worked at Southern University. More of what you have learned, is what they teach of the American way. But what they fail to teach is more along the lines of how it was used or who used it. Basically in my way of saying they teach what PWI schools do and not what others such as HBCU do! That’s how you only get half the story. It goes more deep rooted.

    As someone who loves this side of marching band, and has more or less devoted my life to being able to teach music and share these experiences with others. I gotta commend you jumping in the pool of research. And I applaud your curiosity. But I also gotta recommend some areas of research as this isn’t very comprehensive. It’s a very close minded white American history of marching band. With HBCU style marching bands not even really getting any sort of meaningful mention beyond a description of their marching style, and the names of a couple floated out amongst other colleges. No mention of fife and drum corps. Marching bands exist outside of America as well, Scottish pipe bands is probably worthy of at least some sort of acknowledgment European military tattoos as well, since most non marchers are familiar with top secret. This isn’t to belittle you, but more so to just speak up for the marching arts that seem to go largely ignored by my fellow drum corps centric marching folk. There’s just entire cultures that we get to ignore for the sake of claiming to be the sole account of “the history of marching bands” and I personally don’t really think that’s right.

      I definitely agree on the HBCU side of marching band, I should have spent some more time covering that as it has its own unique history and culture, which I also find extremely interesting. The problem was that I had a fairly limited time to make this video, and so I used many references that I am personally familiar with to help keep my video credible. Being from Southern California, where no form of marching band is especially popular, it was difficult to find a spot to start on HBCU from a point of near 100% unfamiliarity. I definitely find it as interesting and full of community and life as the other form of bands in America, but I didn't want to put out opinions that I didn't have time to correctly corroborate. I'd like to put out a video on HBCU at some point on this channel when I put out my original slate I have scheduled, and it's effect is not lost on me. Separately, despite the title, this video is focused primarily on the development of American band culture, which has evolved fairly independently due to the way the military began to incorporate bands here. I probably could have chosen a better title for my video specifying America but as this is a personal project I intend to leave the videos 100% alone when posted. This video probably would be more accurately summarized by, "The history of American Marching bands after their United States military influence and other American cultural factors affected it," in which I think this video does accurately enough. It's also mentioned a few times throughout the script of the video that we are focusing on the development of bands in America, which may not be quite clear enough but there is for sure a distinction in there. I do feel like most performers in the marching arts beyond high school (drum corps and college bands) are familiar with the other styles outside of those covered in the scope of this video, and most are likely also aware of the backgrounds that come band comes from, making this rather irrelevant to an enthused band kid audience, those that truly love the marching arts. This is more meant to cater to those who are unfamiliar with the base activity of the marching bands: people like my own parents who struggle to understand why someone would want to play an instrument and march at the same time. This is the part of the activity that I am qualified to have opinions on, as I come from a small band of around 35 people in high school and the struggles of a limited performing arts department. Ultimately, this video is already over 22 minutes long and including more information would push it far beyond that, and as a full time student in college with my other commitments, I felt this was sufficient to satisfy my creative side that I used to make this video, and thus I feel I have achieved my goal. I appreciate your criticism and I take it to heart, I know I should've covered HBCU style and band development outside of America is interesting as well and should be covered, I'm just not sure I could have done it justice in the allotted time I gave myself. Thanks so much for your view and your thoughts!

    Well said through and through, loved the vid. One thing that is hard for me to convey to other non-band people or people who left band because they felt judged in school, is how strong that feeling of wanting to be apart of that world of music again, in this context, after you have aged out of every applicable marching group or collegiate band group, truly is. I'm 27 now and constantly look fondly upon the years spent in marching band, traveling for football games, traveling for competitions, and all the other parades/events associated. Despite the times spent dreading having to go to another football game to play the same stuff in a different locale, given the chance today I would 100% do it all again. Music is an amazing part of society that many take for granted and a source of endless learning, not to mention the camaraderie developed. When I was in band in HS/College for marching and concert, I was a trombonist through and through, since i've aged out and miss the feeling of that performance, i've since learned nearly all concert instruments brass and woodwind combined out of just a pure hobby and admiration to the art of music and drive of that nostalgia to relive those most fun moments. Thanks for the vid!
