I have a Yacht Master License from Poland from 1975, which allows me to operate sailing yachts in all waters of the world. I have lived in the USA for 47 years and the US Coast Guard has never asked me for a license. However, always asked for an American driving license. However, the insurance always asks (or I fill out a form) about experience, completed trips and, in the case of crossing the Atlantic (this is mainly my route), to prove the number of crossings. Also interested are the number of days at sea (over 8 hours is 1 day), the number of storm days, at night, etc. during my sailing career. Except that I only run sailing yachts. And for recent years, my water body has been the North Atlantic.

My understanding of Maritime law is that any boat over 40 tons you must have a Captains license, but if you are the boat or Yacht owner and don't want to have to go through all the B.S. of getting the license you can always hire your own Captain?????????.

  • @robgrune3284

imagine yourself on the road, knowing the majority of truckers have never obtained a licence. scary, no? concerns for safety? why should yachts owners not have some limited licence requirements? ergo the EU countries require licences.

  • @garypeterson3628

You have a lot to learn before you start teaching. Foremost, there is no such thing as a "Captains License" or a "US Coast Guard Captains License" . No such wording exists. As far as recreational boaters not needing licenses if they don't carry "Paying" customers.....If your fishing buddies chip in for fuel or bait, or even if they just bring a cooler full of beverages, and heroes, they are technically "Paying" customers. You can Boo Hoo this if you want, but just wait till someone slips and breaks an ankle while you are operating the vessel. A good Maritime Attorney will fry you in a Maritime Court.

You can get a basic captains license with just one years 'working on a boat' (just a couple of hours a day) and passing a written exam. Nobody examines you actually operating a boat. Imagine going to get a drivers license..."have been a passenger for over a year and I can answer all the questions" I know of a Hula dancer who got a captains license because she helped with the lines when they docked the tourist boat she worked on. Other than that she couldn't tell the blunt end from the pointy end! And they gave her a license to take out 'paying passengers'

The RYA Day Skipper is actually a higher standard than an ICC. UK Law does not require any training or experience for a recreational boat. You can never legislate for idiots. Contrast the accident rate on the uk and French sides of the Channel. France requires a licence for any vessel over 3m but the test is so simple that many do not seek proper training . The rate is higher on the French side. Beware of legislation, it can be counterproductive.

This just popped up I watched and wondered where it came from. As far as the importance of seamanship skills in order to be responsible is common sense. In my neck of the woods it starts at 13, certificated to operate within the states jurorstriction. At 16 USCG tenders License 12 passengers or less, 18 for 30 passengers. Back in the day, next was 50 ton but today it's 100 ton USCG License with operating restrictions. It's all about logged time on documented vessels . The sad fact is the loop holes. The sea is unforgiving the insurance companies are quite willing to allow lack of skill by premines. Scary huh!!

It’s amazing how this popped up in my feed, 30 minutes ago I was enjoying a coffee with my wife down at the marina, saw this guy head out in a brand new boat, I said to my wife what is this guy doing? He is all over the place not what I would call in control……..10 mins later he is back in again all over the place, that’s when I noticed his steering was backwards….. I went down and told him and he told me the boat was brand new! The steering was installed incorrectly from factory 🤦🏼‍♂️

Yeah, when I was a kid (30+ years ago), we learned from our family members. I learned sailing from both my parents and motor boating from my aunt & uncle who had a house on a lake as well as my grandparents who had a vacation house in a small town on the coast. Heck, my other grandad would even take us up in his single prop plane and let us fly for a while (something I now wish I'd kept up with).

I recently retired my 1600 ton license because of my age, sadly. However in my 50 years of working on the sea some of the best “captains” didn’t hold a ticket. Some people just have the gift, and some don’t and never will. You can study all the books you want and without the feel for it will never be. Just some wisdom from an old salt!

I agree entirely - My Ships Master's was under the old British Admiralty - the hard and long way. Nowadays it takes 5 minutes sea time and hey presto, you are a "Captain" You Tube is full of them, they make desperate thumbnails of them crying etc just to get views whilst they prance around. Seriously, if they had to do genuine navigation (paper charts/sextant) and boat handling (with out Sat Nav, chart plotters, etc with out bow/stern thrusters etc) they would curl up in the corner and tremble. I like modern navigation systems/aids and use them well, but unless you have a grounding in real seamanship, you are just a monkey pushing buttons on an interface.

Worked as engineer on a landing craft in Alaska. The owner hired an old boy who told everyone that he was on his 11th renewal of his master mariner license. He was frightening. Drawing plotting lines on charts like he was ocean navigating when we were in an island group, ran the boat up on a big rock that was visible from the deck. The contractors crew refused to ride with us he was so bad. Put the boat sideways on the beach because he was in too much of a hurry to set the stern anchor. The list goes on and on. Just because someone has a license doesnt mean they know what they are doing.

I held a coast guard masters license until my age and physical condition wouldnt allow me to renew it as required. What surprised me was that time spent on the water was the requirement for a license, not actually time spent operating a vessel . In other words time spent on charter fishing trips or even on half day party/open fishing boats counted towards your required time. But documentation of the time was required. A masters license as opposed to the more common 6 pac license allows for more than 6 passengers on your boat. The test for obtaining it is only slightly more involved, requiring a bit more preparation. Same goes for a towing endorsement on the license. If the test is taken at one of the regional Coast Guard facilities you can opt for taking the masters license test initially. The size of the license you receive upon passing the test, will be with regard to the vessel size you showed having experience with on your application. Most people today use one of the privately run agencys for obtaining a license. They seem to only offer the basic 6 pac coarse for the initial license. Then they offer another coarse at an additional cost to upgrade to a masters license. So remember that you can sit for the test at a Coast Guard center, and walk out with a masters license issued the same day.
