Warco GH1440 Lathe - Part 2 - Testing on AT-1 Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.2 месяца назад
In this video we answer the question will a Warco GH1440 380v 3-phase lathe run on 240v single phase using a AT-1 variable frequency drive? Many home workshops don't have 3-phase power and have to resort to other methods of powering bigger machines, using such devices as Static Phase convertors, rotary convertors which are both expensive so many resort to cheaper VFD's such as the AT-1. *Discla...

Dear Matt Another great video. With respect to your last one, when you made the sheet metal pieces to go over the cylinders, you drilled the required holes with a regular twist drill. May I recommend you track down some "step drills". These are shortish, cone shaped bits with up to 5 or 6 (or more) different diameter sections so one bit can drill holes from say 1/8" to 1/2" in 1/16" increments. I'm sure metric ones are made as well. They are specifically for drilling sheet metal and cut neat tidy holes with minimum burrs etc. I think the smallest diameter available is 1/8", but the largest diameter one I have will cut 1 1/8" diameter. Over here in Canada, Unibit and Lennox are 2 good quality brands. I would emphasize buying only good quality name brands as the cheap imports are not accurate and blunt very easily. See what you think. Best wishes from Canada. Paul (ex pat)
Bloody good work mate 👍👍. Robert
Very nice work mister. That engine looks great.
Skins? Don’t you mean cladding?
Happy New Year! Hope you had a great evening!
Brilliant work, Matt.
correct sound of mallard it sounds like a little one
Looking great my friend - puts my 2mm Zintec, rolled in the vice with a bit of round bar to shame. Not long now until them wheels be a rotating! Happy new year to you and yours. G
That deburring tool looked excellent. Nice to see some progress on the loco 😀
Thanks Julia, hope you had a good Christmas. I wouldn't be without the sheet deburring tool, before I found them my hands were covered in cuts. Plenty more to come on the loco!! All the best, Matt 👍🚂
I was waklking thru the Machine shop and thought of you. ruclips.net/user/shortsyXw0wqiTS8Q
😂 my bed is not that bad 😂😂, they are just witness marks on the Bridgeport.... yeah witness to poor operators abuse! Luckily not one of them is mine. All the best, Matt 👍
I hated sheet metal work when I was a fitter, lol. I worked for Ford Motor Company in the factory for 15 years, but I spent the last 5 years in the new machine shop that used to be an oil store. The new chief engineer bought some really nice second-hand machine tools from a college: a shaper, three lathes, two milling machines, and a surface grinder. I did not have to work shifts anymore! I just made one or two offs. Great job in an immaculate workshop. The they closed down😒
That's a shame!! I was a master of sheet metal work with no tools, now I can use the tools too 😂. All the best, Matt 👍
Cardboard Aided Design :) good one 👍
Thanks Alan, sometimes you have to use modern technology 😂. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Thanks!
Alan, thank you, that is much appreciated. All the best to you and family in 2025. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
That was a good 2024! Looking forward to seeing the work in 2025! Cheers to all, Ian
Thanks Ian, was definitely a good year, can't wait to get rolling with next year!! All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Gud Un Matt😉😉👍👍🎅🎅🚂🚂 like the magnetic vice benders, i need some!! laterzzzzzzzzzzzz Kev
Now then Kev, These little vice benders come in very handing!! I got mine from Stakesys, link here..... stakesys.co.uk/sheet-metal-folders/v-brake-kits/vice-mounted-folder Hope you had a great Christmas! All the best, Matt 👍🚂
@@MattChiversWorkshop cheers Matt
As an arc welder and angle grinder man whose engineering skills are at best agricultural I never fail to be impressed by the quality of your work. Thanks for a year of great content. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to in 2025.
Thanks Rick, much appreciated as always. Who knows what may happen in 2025, my predictions for 2024 didn't exactly go to plan 😂😂.... we shall make it up as we go along! All the best, Matt 👍🚂
I think you should re-make the cylinder skins again so we can see how you fold them. Only joking! Many thanks Matt for sharing your excellent engineering skills with us throughout 2024. Wishing yourself and your viewers a Very Happy New Year! See you in 2025. - Fletch -
Many Thanks Fletch, much appreciated. There were a few norse sounding words in the workshop when I realised it had not recorded the folds. All the best for the new year, I have no idea what we will get up too, but hopefully it involves steam! All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Nice, great job!
Thank You, All the best, Matt 👍
Dose Binky know you have nicked his CAD
shhhh..... they don't know 😂😂. Hope you had a good Christmas Mozzer, all the best for the new year. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Impressive. I’m very jealous of your workshop and excellent skills!
Thanks Paul, much appreciated. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Hy Matt, why do you drill with the Z-axis instead the pinole ?
Hi, I'm not sure what a pinole is?! I used the z-axis because it's on the DRO! The quill isn't. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
@@MattChiversWorkshop Sorry Matt I meen the quill, than I understand. So you have to make a DRO on the quill. That's easy, I made one to the quill. I never use the Z-axis for drilling because there is an power feet on the Z-axis.
Another great episode, thanks Matt !!
That's Graham, much appreciated. All the best, Matt 👍
My Enco 1440 is identical to that machine to the tee. Well, mine is Blue.
These machines were all built in the same factory, painted different colours and labels. All the best, Matt
Really liking the locos build series... you weren't holding onto much of that carbide cutter were you! I've always chucked cutters as much as possible.
Sometimes you got to do what you got to do. All the best, Matt 👍
Excellent.
Thanks Rick. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Merry Christmas to and family, slow and steady
Thanks RB, Merry Christmas to you and your family. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Matt, Firstly, thank you for all the hard work in making and editing these really cool vids. 👏👏 Secondly, you provide a valuable ‘training’ service to all the hopefuls that watch the channel. Great to see such a HUMUNGOUS piece of engineering coming together 👏 And last but not least.., Merry Xmas to you and yours. 2025 should be a boomer eh? 🤣🤣🤣 Regards Robert🇦🇺
Merry Christmas Robert. Thanks for all your support it's much appreciated. Hopefully next year we shall see steam in this loco. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
If you have a good gasket company near you see if you can get the gaskets CNC lazier cut, saves a huge amount of time and you can get a few spares done at the same time and the cost isn't much more than the gasket sheet cost. If you are cutting them by hand you can use the ball end of the hammer to mark out the stud holes, just do it the same way as you did for the other edges.
Agreed. I got my cylinder gaskets made professionally. Cost was surprisingly low and I have a bunch of spares. They all fitted first time and saved all the work plus the cost of a sheet of gasket material.
Excellent work Matt!!! Merry Christmas to you and your family,!
Thanks Jeff, Merry Christmas to you and your family. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Merry Christmas Matt! Good progress, and looking forward to seeing more to come next year. Boiler? Did anybody mention that you need a boiler? Have a great Christmas!
Merry Christmas Mark. Definitely more to come!! I said I hope to have news on the boiler, unfortunately I've been let down, all will be revealed and covered in the appropriate episode. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
@ bummer that you’ve been let down. Hope you get something sorted soon.
Nice to have a chat with you.
Happy Christmas buddy, have a good one. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Merry Christmas Matt.
Merry Christmas to you too. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Thanks for sharing 👍 and Merry Christmas to you and your family 😊
And a Happy Christmas to you and your family. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Another enjoyable video Matt. 👍🏻 I purchased a cheap dehumidifier about 4 years ago. It’s been running 24/7 since, never stopped and keeps the workshop at 50% humidity. Rust now takes a lot longer to build up to a point I barely need to worry about it. Room is slightly sealed though and insulated. Hope you have a merry Christmas 🎉🎉
Merry Christmas Richard. Yes I've considered one, but until I've got rid of the wafer thin garage door it would be a waste of money! Hopes for the new year! All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Good episode, thanks. Happy Christmas. 👍
Thanks Alan, and thank you for your generosity, it's greatly appreciated. Happy Christmas, All the very best, Matt 👍🚂🚂🚂
Thanks!🚂
Alan, Thank you so very much for your generosity it's greatly appreciated. All the very best, Matt 👍🚂🚂🚂🚂
Keep going, mate. I can't wait until it's finished. It took me 5 years to build a Stewart model, lol. My job got in the way
Thanks Dermot, next year I have lots to achieve with this build, I'd like to steam it! We shall see what happens. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
Merry Christmas Matt, looking forward to more great videos next year.
Merry Christmas Allison, maybe we could squeeze another one this year?? All the best, Matt 👍🚂

Looking great - keep up the excellent work.
Thanks Ted, Much appreciated. All the best, Matt 👍🚂
That lathe looks great. Nice video.
Hi Matt, I was about your age when I moved my shop from our first house to our current location. Then I had a section of the cellar dug out and a cement floor put in, another movement of heavy machines. Then a couple of auctions acquiring a 3000 pound lathe and another Bridgeport and later a CNC Bridgeport moving it all by myself. Now at 82 years old all I can do concerning moving heavy machines is live vicariously thru you watching you do the needful on your channel. When I finally have to give up my shop ( not soon I hope) I will have to bring in millwrights to clear the machines out or the buyer will have to collect them. Cheers! Dick B. USA
When you driled and tapped the M8 holes to bolt the cylinder to the frames you only went 0.56 of an inch. It would appear that you could have gone deeper, without damaging anything, and made tapped.ind holes a lot easier. Any thoughts on this?
I followed the drawings 👍
Awesome bit of kit. Could really do with something like this!
Hard work moving machines 😮 well done though on doing it safely 😀
