Hi Ian! It's Jason Chang. I worked with you on a few research studies at UBC from 2003 to 2005. I recently started learning Japanese, and was having a discussion with a Japanese teacher about tongue positions for Japanese vowels. I've always thought that う is a high vowel and お is a mid vowel, but looking at 0:14 ぼくボブ, the く seems to show the highest tongue position due to the preceding consonant. Between ボ and ブ the tongue height, surprisingly, doesn't differ by a lot. Is this typical at all?

Hi Jason! Very nice to hear from you... OMG it's been almost 20 years! Hope you're doing well. You're right that う is a high vowel and お is a mid vowel. One thing to remember when looking at this ultrasound movie is that the direction "up" in the movie is actually "up and back" in the mouth. The reason for that is that the movie is displayed with the probe at the bottom pointing straight up. When we're collecting the ultrasound data, though, the probe has to be angled up and back to maximize the distance between the hyoid bone shadow (the dark line that becomes visible on the left when she's swallowing at 0:13sec. and the mandible shadow (dark shadow almost always visible on the right).

When I record the sound and press play, the sound is strange (such as the sound of someone using a device to change his voice, or as the tone of a monster in movies😅) What should I do?😢

Hi. At 7:37 of the video, I very quickly mention "Shift frequencies..." in the Modify menu (when you have selected a PitchTier object. That will modify ALL frequencies in the time range that you specify.

@@ianwilsonaizu That did work, but if you start with the pitch tier, you're not starting with the same sound, you're starting with the distilled pitch. This can't be used, for example, to make a voice sound lower. Is Praat just not the tool for that sort of manipulation?

말로 된 문장으로 MP3 파일들을 한 폴더에 넣으면 다 분석하고 나서 억양/강세로 나눌 수 있는 프로그램이나 가능성이 있나요? Is there a way to put MP3 files of spoken sentences into a folder analyze it and have the sentences organized by most similiar intonation/cadence?

Hello Sir, I am working on a language identification task using prosodic features. For the prosodic feature extraction, I am using the Praat software. And as the language database is quite large(in 10s of GBs ) so recording and saving the feature extractio details for some utterance can be a auite large atsk and also not accurate and correct approach. So I want to ask can we automate the task of feature extraction in Praat for easy implementation? Thanks

What you're actually hearing when you hear yanny is an artifact of the low quality digital sampling process. The artifact is called aliasing, whereby original frequencies create mirrored ghost frequencies around 2 points on a frequency graph, You need to research Nyquist frequency to understand why you can get a copy of the lower frequencies shifted higher and inverted, the inversion causes the intonation of the vocal sounds to be opposing the original intonation at the same time as it is played. rising pitch intonation becomes falling pitch intonation at the same time, only pitch shifted up and vice versa, falling intonation in the original creates rising intonation at the same time, pitch shifted up. saying laurel is kind of the opposite to saying yanny in terms of pitch changes. The sound was simply re-sampled to a low quality setting that brought these artifacts of digital sampling into your hearing range, CDs for example do the same thing, but the ghost frequencies are too high for us to notice. Look up Nyquist frequency on wikipedia for a better explanation.

It doesn't matter at what speed, low or high frequency, i only hear Yanny. Idk why. I watched a speed up version and almost barely could laurel but it would switch to a definite yanny afterwards.
