CNC Plasma Cutter / Workbench - Inspired by JD's Garage design

Here's a CNC Plasma cutter that fits neatly inside a workbench. The design has a systems for draining the cutting table fluid and has ample storage for 2x2 and 4x2 steel plates under the cutting system. I took significant inspiration from the JD's garage design, I think they did a terrific job.

Plaid Keyboard firmware

I made a custom PLAID keyboard for a Cyberdeck PC project. I had a lot of trouble making the Ateml 328P based keyboard work correctly. Nothing is hard but putting it all together was challenging and I made a lot of mis-steps. Here's a summary of what I did to make it work. Keyboard build discussion starts at 2:48

Nice job. Can I ask what type of filament did you use for the 3D printed parts? Thanks, from Australia.
I've used ABS for everything. The reason for my choice is the increased toughness and higher temperature rating. Also, to be honest it's because my printer will print ABS (Voron 2.4). I believe the JD's garage people used PLA with no ill effect. My family all live on the gold coast.
Nice
Works like a charm. I have some issues with the z axis, could be just me not knowing how to set it up right... Moves only a little and says error. Already tried changing the Grbl spet direction but it seem that I am not able to understand what is happening
Bad ass i built the version one the offer but it takes up so much room. I am going to build there new XL version and do this.
As a retired kindred mechanical / robotics designer type guy, I do like many of your solutions. I, too, would like to have a small CNC plasma table, but I have similar space constraints, not to mention being cheap. I'll do the right thing and buy JD's plans, though mostly for the print files, new controller and torch height build list. I already have a commercial spec miniature Z axis assembly with linear rails and ball screw salvaged from the company scrap bin, so that's a potential win. Thanks to JD's Garage and yourself for doing ali of the heavy lifting.
Hello,great video,maybe you have shematic that z axis fiter,because my z axis do wrong,thanks
What are the printable DIN snap clips you used? Great vid also <3 greetings from Bulgaria
I started with this one and designed "attachment" for each of my devices. www.thingiverse.com/thing:2613804
Love the ability to use it as other things when not in cutting mode. Great job.
Nice job. I like the metal lift setup you have. Ive just been running a few gallons of water now. Just a 1/4 inch seems to work good enough for catching sparks, for my use at least.
Thanks. I started out with the tank almost completely full. It made a mess, splashed water everywhere and spilled if I bumped the table or tired to move it at all. My last run with the machine was with about 3/4" of water. The shop got a bit dusty, I though I'd try the next run a bit in between.
second problem i have, how add to display button start spindle ON and spindle OFF and were this code need add ? and add relay to what pin ?
Thanx Eric, i am a total linux cnc nono. i am wondering how to use the macro buttons eg macro 1 for the z-probe, can you help me with that? for the normal buttons i can see the mdi commands but not for the macros. regards, Patrick

Hey man I have the same problem with my 91 Honda elude si. I was wounded if you would be willing to make me one and if so How much would you charge to make the vss and ship it to me? I would greatly appreciate it
Looks like a clean cut.
thanks for this good tutorial
It's interesting u mentioned Surfers paradise reminding u of Miami because when they were 1st designing the city, Miami was what the town planners had in mind! haha . There's even a suburb @ surfers called Miami. I enjoyed your presentation, u didn't linger too long on things, u get it brief and to the point! Thanx for sharing and safe travels.
Witam czy może pan udostępnić pliki konfiguracyjne wymiany narzędzi w linuxcnc , bardzo był bym wdzięczny .
Thanks, very helpful!
lsusb - command not found... hmmm
If lsusb isn't on your system, you will need to install "usbutils." Something like apt-get install usbutils.
Very cool. Based on the tutorial, we are able to start our Linuxcnc smoothly, Thanks a lot! I am a programmer and I like this tutorial ! Well done!
I'm glad you got something out of it, good luck!
Erik, this was super-interesting! Look forward to more videos like this from you.
Thanks Erik, much appreciated. Seen your thread on the Linuxcnc forum today. I'm hurting my brain the last few days learning whatever I can about interfacing both Gamepad controllers using buttons only, and also MPG pendants (got the very same model on it's way from XHC). It's like you say, the setup task itself is not difficult once you piece together all the bits of info that (hopefully) eventually lead to things working. But wow, I'm finding you have to put the time in with Linuxcnc to learn stuff. I'm using Qtplasmac and there's a few differences in hal to using say Axis, but still your hal file should help me out heaps. I'll be studying every line. Take care.
I would totally pay you to build me on of these? Did it work once installed?
I just saw in your desc. that it worked. Amazing
It’s worked perfectly for a year. I’m not much interested in making just one more but if there was demand for ~10 I would do it.
What the position for the timing
Hi, I made a pendant and got it working quite a awhile ago. I don’t remember much of how. I learned and tweaked a few things from your video. Can you tell me if possible, to create a mdi command to move the spindle from its current location on x and y to a relative position and set x and y zero?
Like move .025”+ on x and .025- on y, and set both to 0.00
after venturing down this road, i wrote a whole hal component in C using hal compile.
for toolchanger?
i not understand how i make Z bit zero automatic code. many video but not understand how make, not has newer write code or use before linux and first time linuxcnc now, build cnc my son.
I don't understand your question. English is my only language so please try again to ask your question or use a translator and I will try and give you an answer.
@@eriksalo5550 how i make z touch plate setting in linuxcnc., button to panel and automatic set zero.
@@eriksalo5550 setting touch plate , first need button on display, then need know were folder need add file button call touch plate g-code, i has before can make button on display but if bush button come errors lot, not know were need add file what button call, were is button file location, were is g-code location how can call g-code who run touch plate code, code include g-code were position bit go and move down and touch plate and stop and move back up, and calculate position minus touch plate tighnes and thats is zero point at workpiece top zero. you need make video step-by step how add and were all code text, first write button text and were file named and location must be, then g-code name and location were need add, i have linuxcnc 2-8-4 debian linuxcnc, hall sensor show true/false if contact touchplate ,mean mechanic/elektric connection working. but this code not working. not move anywere if bush button at display.
Man were you right about reading through the example configs. I was trying to get manual tool change with auto tool probe working. Then I found you can just call M6 from inside the remapped M6 and do a probe after. You've done the lord's work here
This is the best explanation I've seen yet. Would you be willing to post your ini file in here. I would like to see the whole file, and compare it to the one I am trying to get to work.
Here you go... forum.linuxcnc.org/24-hal-components/47288-xhc-hb04-config-ini-file-posted#255806
If my wife starts to complain that i again spend money for "some stupid cnc" i'll tell her it's your fault!
I can’t find the sensors for this year car idk if what you used. was the 90-91 accord vss?? cause they say that it is a semi good replacement part. I just starting having the problem
For those struggling with the audio if you are on chrome, just grab the "volume booster" extension.
When I go to buy a pendant, they refer to Mach 3 in advertising that is still the one to buy as long as it's a xhc-whb04b-4 pendant ? Good video.
I think they advertise them as Mach 3 pendants since the Mach 3 software has native support. They both work with LinuxCNC in my experience. Both have their plusses and minuses but either is a great addition to an CNC
Sir, I want to configure my own made DUAL ARM SCARA in linux CNC, is it possible?
Thanks, works like a charm in sim, a few little bugs here and there on linuxCNC 2.9, but this saved me a lot of time. Cheers!
I did have one issue going from the simulator to a real machine. When I added my xhb.hal file to my milling machine, I got a number of errors saying "that pin is already in use somewhere else." For the most part, I was able to comment out the offending commands. However, it seems that "whb.halui.machine.is.on" is required to be activated for the jog wheel to work. I first just added whb.halui.machine.is.on to the main .hal file. However, that pin does not exist until whb driver is loaded. What I did to make it work is to add the other pin to to the whb.hal file. The other pin in my case was a signal to my Mesa card to enable the servo's, I needed it. Putting that signal in the whb.hal file did the trick. I learned about enabling multiple pins in this post: forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/35822-two-signals-connected-to-one-output-pin
Awesome and ingenious, Erik love you did not quit and worked to develop your own solution.
is linuxCNC a distro??? or is it a program???
Great video! Its exactely what i was looking for a long time. Thank you
Inget signal conflict when I try to use this with a pretty big standard axis config
Almost everyone will have signal conflicts when they try and implement. You will get an error if you have specified a HAL pin somewhere else in your configuration. Some of them you can comment out but others are required. In particular, you need "whb.halui.machine.is-on" needs to be tied to the "halui.machine.is-on" is critical to operation. I found this post on how to link two signals, recommend this: forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/35822-two-signals-connected-to-one-output-pin
I am buying this just because you figured it out :)
How are all your jog functions? I had problems trying to get those to work properly before I gave up when I was still in the planning/testing phase of my conversion about a year and a half ago. I haven’t gotten around to getting the pendant working yet since getting my retrofit done because of that
I had the same problem exactly. The fix for me was I needed to net "whb.halui.machine.is-on" in the HAL file. See my comment below
Thanks for a nice video!
Your experience of learning about LinuxCNC is exactly like mine! Easy once you've figured it out, but very difficult to actually get there.
learn lot but not understand english good, need be Finnish manual. need help cheap chinese one relay breakoutboard not show hall meter true/false my probe. i just test optocouplers have ok. but not sure manual not say need only power 5V to board whit usb connection or need optional 12-24V to board power supply, because input pin go to board line and led to 12.24V whit led to input screw terminal. pin 10,11,12,13,15 and GND have screw terminal.probe pin 15. config wisard has add pin 15 probe in, E stop pin 10 and normal all motors.
Can you make a video about offset setting on linux cnc?
Very cool! Too bad it's so difficult to do. You could crank about a bunch of those and sell them to the 3rd Gen community. We need em
I would be amenable to making a batch of ~20 of these. My costs with machining time would be something like $200 each. Do you think twenty people need these? How would I find out?
I happen to need one..check prelude forums and groups...no one can find any..yes you could sell them. I need one..how bout selling me one. How do I contact you?

@Erik Salo I need one also I have a 1988 prelude
Wait, what? The weezey image? wth is that???
i have my computer debian 10 whit preem somethink i not know m have many image what can install, many different computer and need select just you computer best image.
Another excellent video. Yet another item I need to finish on my machine. Mine has electric 2 speed change in the motor windings.
Thanks Erik!! This may be the info I needed to get my toolchanger rolling. I have a machine with PPMC on it also. I always struggled with how to get the physical pins to the virtual pins. My tool changer is somewhat similar to yours. The O code flow path is very close. I am going to work on it some this weekend.
Could you do a spindle orient quick video? Like the Hal pin connections for pid spindle control. This is a great video Thank you
