What do you mean? This flight is in legal airspace. It's close to wilderness areas but not in them.
I love the application of using a drone for filming and think this is a great concept but the motion is a little too much and detracts from the race IMO. However, I’d love to see some of the closer oblique angles more regularly in filming. If that could be achieved with less of the circling, I think that’d be a significant improvement to regular broadcast views.

Wow okay I have to ask two VERY important questions. 1. How was the audio recorded/mixed? It sounds so spatially accurate but I don't detect a single hint of prop noise. And 2. Is the drone okay? Conformal coating?
1. This question makes me happier than you’ll ever know, so first, thank you :). We spent an hour after shooting this receiving individual samples of each sound element. Jumping off the blocks, diving in, coaches whistling, each side cheering, each swimmers’ stroke/arm splashes, etc etc. From there I spent a while recreating the sound design and created a studio/spacial sound mix. It’s definitely not perfect but I’m glad to get this question bc it let’s me know it’s good enough to sound fairly realistic! 2. The drone is now! I lost two in the process while filming this shot over two days. I ended up using a shendrones hydrophobe and sealed it completely with marine grade silicone. I will say that waterproofing a drone to the level of dive bombing into a pool at 30mph is much, much harder task than I initially thought!

Thank you! We recorded all the individual elements of the race after the shoot. So jumping of the blocks, entering the water, each side’s cheers, coaches’ whistling, then individual swimmers one by one. From there it all blending in the edit bay, even down to timing the individual splashes of swimmers arms going into the water. It’s was a lot of work, and there’s things I would definitely improve if I could do it over, but I’m pretty stoked on how it came out!

I was initially planning on filming this with a cinewhoop! It was a custom design of a Squirt with an enclosed hardware bay but it proved to be too heavy for the motors I used and I smoked one while practicing this line. So I ended up using the 5” hydrophobe with ducts around the props for protection.

Well done. Is the hydrophobe actually that waterproof? Something tells me it didn't survive?...
Not by itself. I sealed it with 3M 4200 marine sealant to the point where I thought it would be fully “waterproof”. I was wrong. We did one take, with the dive bomb into the water and it shorted almost instantly. I fixed it and resealed it from the inside and out and it survived. Though after a month of flying I don’t think I’d fully submerge it again. The area where the battery leads comes out seems like a weak point since it flexes. I’m working on a new iteration that should be better.

if your aiming for cinematics shoot in 24fps or it will look like a 4k soap opera. everything else is done fantasticly but the frame rate ruins it completly. no high quality comericial is shot higher than 24 in america. unless the shoot for slo motion but even then 24fps timeline
