How to install a vinyl top with pad
Do you have to remove quarter glass to install top ? I have the same cutlass and doing vinyl top. Great video constantly looking at it before I do mine..
No tack strips???
It has metal ones the older cars have tack strips
What do you need to know
Hi my name is jay I have a question about the rag top you did on your car.
I have question what kind glue you spray for headliner
@@hershelroach2815 well wood landau top adhesive
I have just glued the foam (closed cell) on my 1988 Brougham and it's great but the glue stick quick and does not allow for readjustment. What is the right way to apply the Weldwood contact cement and be able to manage the vinyl top in place before pressing it down? This video doesn't explain that point.
Mark a centerline on the top and Mark centerline on the vehicle glue the top first place the top on the center line. I flip over the top halfway put just a small amount of glue just in the center area. Set your centerline then glue each side separate from there.
An old trick that works when using contact cement to give you time to play around a bit is to place waxed paper sheets between the two surfaces. Contact cement will not stick to waxed paper so you can pull it out in strips one at a time and get you foam straight before pressing it down. Work slowly and in increments that you can handle and you should do alright.
Great work, what do you normally charge to redo a vinyl top?
@@queezytarantino1456 $800 on up depending the vehicle
GREAT WORK REALLY ,REALLY LOOKS GOOD ,THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Are you using regular contact cement?
I need my top done on my 1983 oldsmobile 98 4 door where are u located
Great instructions, we struggled in the past but followed the video and went right in.
What is the glue you used to do this? The one we used on our 1971 Charger didn't work that slick? Thanks for the help
Weldwood what’s that landau top adhesive
Looks good!!
Very Kool brother
I am open Monday threw Friday 9 to 5 Lamont’s auto upholstery in Michigan
I have a question about removing the aluminum strips across the top and up the B panel. Can you provide assistance with that? Nothing on RUclips shows the removal of those strips can you talk me through it? I love that blue top on the white with the seams.
What type of car?
@@garylamont898 sorry same car as demonstration 1979 Olds Cutlass supreme
@@garylamont898 also Gary do you know if the plastic strips around the back window are available the ones you took the fabric under along the back window. You got skills thanks for the demonstration.
They are on with clips I unclip the side first I push the molding to the side then use a plastic stick to unclip them once the sides are loose I normally pull them straight towards me and slide them off be careful those clips break really easy
If you can’t find them in a junk yard you have to make them I use fiberglass shower board and silicone around the outer edge stick it right to the window I have made many custom tops that lasted for years that way you just have to pad it up a little more and shape it
Your top replacement on the cutlets was real helpful. I have a question about removing the strips along the top and up the B panel. How can I get further assistance?
Fast mover a quick learner
wow , have you ever done one of these before?...I'm just sitting here watching a lot of mistakes. Well I hope your learning more from each one you do.
Yes I am learning allot this is my second one i ever did in my 40 years of doing upholstery 😂
Hello, Are you interested in testing our products? We would like to invite you to test the Seat Covers for your 2023 Can Am Defender Max
Do you have contact information I would be interested
How much do you charge to do a black top on an 80 cutlass and I remove everything? And clean under the old vinyl top first
Thanks, started freaking out since my thoughts were there is no reason it should be leaking assuming competent QC at factory. Therefore, was worried maybe its burning off coolant. Scary for a brand new 2023. Going to rip it apart today and see if this is the cause.
Mine was leaking behind the passenger side wheel where it plugs into the heater core also so make sure them are good and tight glad my video pointed you in the right direction
This will be fun covered in mud, off the grid so she hadn't had a nice cleaning since purchase. Bad Canam Dad, I know. @@garylamont898
Thanks for the show.
Good video. Next time you make a video please hold the cell phone camera sideways.
My neighbor next door to me is from Bay City, MI and he has to be one of the nicest guys i've ever met in my life. I've always loved vehicles with vinyl tops and to watch this man work with over 40 + years of experience is so gratifying. He has a true talent and takes a ton of pride in his work. Awesome video.

the part none of the videos show is when they make the cuts for the side dome lights like on a 67 impala. I'm assuming the cut has to be big enough for the light to come through? do you have a video showing how to do that part?
locktight at lowes does not work.
what is the name of the adhesive you used on the car and headliner?
Great job! How much do you charge for labor?
