Painting a Magazine Cover in One Day
Describing a cover illustration for Sports Business Journal, from start to finish.
I was assigned to create a painting depicting the overflow of money into sports, and the image of a money wave was the concept we agreed to go with. In the video, I chronicle the painting from start to finish, which was completed in one day.
The finished art is colored pencil and acrylic paint on illustration board. Feel free to ask specific questions below.

Process video of two portrait paintings I recently completed for Peter Judd and Jeremey Cook- two creative directors I've worked with in the past. The portraits will be used on their website. The video begins after drawings are completed, and I describe my process of building up color, and making the two portraits look uniform. They are each on 11x14 bristol vellum paper, completed using Golden...

Process video of a painting I recently completed for Dreyfuss & Blackford, an architecture firm in Berkeley, CA. If you have comments about materials or process, please leave them below, thanks!
Painting Stanley Tucci for The Washington Post

Here we discuss the illustration process for a commission I recently completed for The Washington Post. The assignment was to create a portrait of Stanley Tucci which would be published alongside an accompanying profile article. A bit of a ramble as usual, but I try to cover the conceptualization process, the drawing steps, and the thought process behind color decisions. The final work is acryl...

Another fantastic project, do you have any suggestions to an inspiring artist to become an illustrator?
Couldn’t hit the subscribe button fast enough! What a fantastic look into what it takes to meet deadlines and the grit involved in sticking with it till the end. Thanks for sharing!
she should see this
Oh this is stunning❤
What was that spray you used?
You are so talented
Amazing work! What song is this? I love it ❤
omg i want her to see this~
this is so gorgeous.
Many thanks 🍻
So good
People deserve to see more of your art <3
This looks great. I’m so disappointed in my W&N artist grade acrylics. They have no opacity. It’s like sour cream.
This looks like as if she joined the spider-verse, really dope🔥
Bro Cynthia needs to see this
lovely as always, just some constructive criticism on the editing side: music could be lowered a bit more, as it is it competes with your voice
plz do ariana as glinda soon😊
absolutely breathtaking work
Such pretty color scheme omg
Appreciate it thank you 🍻
Gracias ❤
Gracias ❤ La música fue perfecta!
Gracias ❤
"They did ask for some changes right at very end" rage flowing in my veins
Is this acrylic paint? It looks so nice and smooth, I love it! =)
You and Alpay efe are my favorite painters! Lol I'm a painter and I pray one day our paths cross! 🔥
beautiful!!!! would love to see the sketching process as well 💚💚
Thanks, I post that in most of the longer form vids
SO HAPPY to see you have a channel, love your work! Thank you for walking us through your process, I'm subscribed!
11:06 also where can we find the paint brush sticky notes!!!
This is facinating! How did you become a commercial artist? I saw the Stanley Tucci painting as well, do you often work with magazines? Is there a video about your career?
"I'm gonna have a beer, put on some Weezer..." yet another reason to like this guy.
Wow, tight deadline you still decided to film for us! That must’ve slowed you down like 10% 😭
Only the best for anyone tuning in on 13 minutes of my blabbing.
Great video. I remember those awful deadlines during a 40 year graphic design career. I stayed up all night once, back when we worked on drawing boards (rather than a Mac) creating an ad that included my illustration. These days I'm (semi) retired and run an Etsy shopo, selling watercolours, pastels and pen and ink. I love your style of illustration!
Great channel, man.
Beer and Weezer. Subscribed.
This was really nice to see, i love the style!
Very cool. Are you allowed to say why you had to remove one of the football players and add two people in suits on the field?
Some of the editors wanted the last minute change. They had to pay for the alteration (which by the way, you should always charge for a change that previously wasn't an issue after the sketch is approved) so the suits must've been important for them.
Jon your dedication to your art, clearly shows. I don't know if I could be standing up that long and painting. This painting came out great! Painting is a lot like solving a puzzle, trying to find the right pieces or in this case the right colors. This is even harder when your for pressed for time. I'm looking forward toward your next piece.
Appreciate it, thank you!
Hi, Jon. In case you think it would be worth it for your channel, please consider making a video sharing a bit of the photographing/editing part of your painting. I don't paint professionally, however I do like to digitize my paintings; only the results I get are usually not quite good (I always feel like the digital version of my paintings looks worse, that every tiny flaw is highlighted etc). Anyways, thank you for sharing your creative process.
Maybe, I'll see if I can make something entertaining out of that.
This is too relatable, thank you for keeping it real, deadlines really sucks sometimes! Awesome art in the end though, hope they pay well!
Yeah I like deadlines cuz they force me to be officially done, but this one was a doozy. I’m glad I didn’t royally screw it up 🍻
Incredible work!
Appreciate the kind words, cheers!
Thank you for sharing these behind the scenes and narration! Great work!
Thanks, appreciate the support!
Your "behind the scenes" videos are fascinating!! And so is your artwork!
Watching your process of the painting was really enjoyable, great work!
Appreciate it, thank you!
Awesome shapes
Jon, I follow you on insta and I just want to say your work is always so satisfying to watch. Keep up the great work! These videos are very entertaining.
Glad you're enjoying these, thanks!
Please include an audio track in Brazilian Portuguese. Your videos are very good.
Gracias ❤
