i beat stuttering. you can too.
I would have never believed this guy when I was a teenager. I would think he didn't have a real stutter, not like mine. Of course it's easy for you to talk about stuttering. You don't really know it.
But I am that guy. I made it to the other side. I don't think about it that often...but man, I came a long way.
If you're where I was, I know you can too.

The Waterboy is the BEST Stuttering Movie!
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.7 лет назад
All clips taken from Disney Studios movie The Waterboy. The purpose of this video is to review and promote the great job Waterboy did in regards to handling the topic of stuttering. EDIT IN 2024: I'm turning this video back to public. It kinda shows how far my speaking on camera has come since I posted this. I regrettably deleted other videos of me talking from this era. It's soooooo painfully ...

EDIT IN 2024: I'm turning this video back to public. It kinda shows how far my speaking on camera has come since I posted this. I regrettably deleted other videos of me talking from this era. It's soooooo painfully slow. But such is the journey of becoming a half-decent speaker...

Stew!! Thank you for sharing your story. I remember some things, but I am very sorry and surprised to hear it got worse in high school. As a teacher now, I certainly feel I need to be aware of this, at least giving students a chance to present work to me privately if not in front of the class. I am glad to hear your words and advice - kind of about tough (but protected?) love to similar students. It's hard, but encouraging to hear!

Thank you, Geoff! It's definitely hard. If you're easy on your students with their speech, they'll love you today, but perhaps realize it wasn't helpful when they're older. If you force them to present today, they will hate you today, but perhaps value your tough love later. You've got great judgement, so I know you'll make the right calls with your students. Awesome to hear from you as always!

I get where ur coming from and I agree that its a good movie and I totally relate to what you said at around 5:30 but I dont think the stammering was very realistic and I think that it represented stammerers in all the wrong ways. It gives stammerers the stereotype of being slow or stupid or sad or socially awkward . I've had a very severe stammer all my life and I'll admit that it has stopped me from doing a lot of things and made me never have to speak to anyone ever again at least once a week😂but as well as being born with a stammer I was born and raised as an extroverted and confident girl. Of course it has stopped me saying things I want to say or talking to people I want to talk to but in general it doesn't stop me from making friends and being in the groups I want to be in and being socially happy. I have been subject to a fair bit of abuse because of it but I've handled it and came out on top alot of the time. Its not a part of me rather just a thing I have. But I know that some people have it alot worse off then me and I'm not saying its easy to be confident and stammering isn't that hard and shouldnt stop u from making friends or being happy. I'm just saying I think they're after putting a stereotype on it that a lot of stammerers are trying to break out of. Stammerers are scarcely represented in popular media and the only representation I've seen are movies like this where it puts that sad socially awkward stereotype on us. I'm really not trying to attack and this small comment ended up turning into the biggest shpeel so I'm sorry bahaha

I understand where your coming from and I agree that this is a funny movie and also love that stuttering got more exposure because of this film. I don't think this is the best movie that depicts stuttering. To me, someone who doesn't stutter might watch the movie and automatically associate stuttering with some sort of intellectual disability or something else. There is already enough of a stigma that people who stutter aren't as intelligent than those who don't. When in reality people who stutter typically have higher IQ scores than those who don't stutter. I'm sure you've heard enough about this movie but The King's Speech is a much better movie that depicts stuttering. If you haven't already give it a watch! BTW this is all coming from a person who also stutters lol. Take care!

Thanks for the comment, Cesar! I see where you're coming from for sure. I just happen to prefer the lighthearted approach to the subject.

Awesome video mate! Another interesting thing I've noticed is that in a lot of Adam Sandler movies, the topic of stuttering comes up. For example, in 'Big Daddy', when the little kid walks up to the girl in the park claiming that he is lost, so that he can ask her if she wants to come and have a movie night with Adam. He says to the woman that if she says no then he (the kid) might develop a stutter. The kid then says, "P-p-p-p-please can you come". Another example is the famous T-t-t-t-oday junior, which is in 'Billy Madison'. There's also another couple that I just can't think of right now, but I know there's definitely more. I think Adam Sandler has some kind of relationship/connection to stuttering in some way...pretty interesting in my eyes haha

Thank you very much! That is funny about Adam Sandler and stuttering in his movies. I agree with you, he must have some kind of connection to it (or maybe fascination with it) in his personal life.
