Fall 2024 updates at my mom's house
The last few times I visited my mom, we did some work on an azalea and a Japanese maple so it was time to check the wiring wasn't getting too tight.
We also attempted some air layers on a birch and a California Lilac (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus)

Hazelnut Air Layer

Hazelnut Air Layer I was checking out my trees this morning and noticed that there were finally some signs of root growth on my hazelnut tree's air layer. It took a full year for this tree to start growing roots, but now that it has I can finally get them separated. Sorry about the background noise, it turned out today was the day my neighbour's new driveway arrived. - My channel is mostly Bons...
Backyard Bonsai Summer Update

I hope everyone is having a good summer! I was out in the backyard today trying to deal with my mess of pots everywhere, and decided to share how things are growing. It's been dry, but I've been doing better this year keeping everything watered. I've still lost a few trees but I don't think it's been heat related. Have a look, and let me know how your trees are doing in the comments! wb - My ch...

Japanese White Pine - Future Bonsai Fukai Japanese White Pine aka Pinus parviflora 'Fukai' My mom bought this White Pine for me way back in April and I've been a little unsure what to do with it. Today I decided to wire a curve into it, which also meant taking out some extra branches and candles. I dipped the cuttings in rooting hormone and potted them up. I've never looked up how to take pine ...

Update - Air Layered Cherry Blossom - First look at the root system.
This is great! I promise I will keep a closer eye on the wiring next time!
Looks like a Fuji cherry blossom
By cutting off the apical, you've just made a shohin, which white pines don't lend themselves very well. You'd have been best leaving it on then wiring it for another 2 - 3 years' growth.
Thanks for the advice. Everything here is an experiment I suppose, and a learning opportunity.
I totally thought you killed it!
Unfortunately candles are not producing energy till they unfold and harden, they suck energy from the tree at this stage. They will not root. But good plan trying something new. Good luck
@@Niemamoka right. The last time I checked them, all but one was decomposing. Thanks for the explanation, that makes good sense.
Lots of material there. It’s so fun when they start making noticeable progress! Bonsai on…
@@DavesBonsai thanks Dave. I’m definitely starting to notice a little progress.
That is pretty cool! Those are some decent roots!
There were also vacuum cleaner sounds at the start and then aircraft. You forgot to complain about those.
@@SylFoss lol, I got over it last year. Or maybe I forgot about it? I can be pretty forgetful.
Hope it will make it,Will... Good luck to you🙏🙏🙏
You have a lot of great trees there! I definitely know what you mean by just trying to keep them alive! Heat waves are not great for potted plants. Pretty sure I've lost at least 2 for sure!
Yeah that's tough. I came home from work last week and one of my trees was drooping really bad. Lucky for me I caught it in time. I soaked it in a bucket of water and it perked right back up.
enjoyable tour will.
Thanks! I don’t have anything as well developed as your trees, but it’s a good start.
@@willbreeze397 we have to start somewhere Will. And you have made a great start, keep it up my friend.
My god! That was brutal!
It will be interesting to see how the roots grew the next time I repot.
Beautiful trunk! Great work.
Thanks!
So when you put it in the pot that was just moss and water? Like a moss and water bath? Thanks🙏🙏🙏
@@1cleandude yes the first pot was just moss, but when I put it in the pot that you see standing on my deck, I had put some regular soil around it. I pulled it out of that pot this spring and untangled the roots, but I basically left it in the same soil/moss mess. I really should have put it in better soil, but now that will have to wait until next spring.
🤔I would have done the pruning-shaping before deadheading the spent flowers😊would have saved some time, simplified the process? I am not afraid to prune, plants are very forgiving and come back with new growth in relatively short time. Plants like to be trimmed 😊. Nice to see u get out of the kitchen 😊
😂 yes we realized too late. But we also didn’t know at the start how much we would take off. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, another interesting video. I never thought about doing a bonsai with an azalea
Thanks! Not technically a tree but they can look really neat. I like the flowering trees. I have a few cherry blossom trees now, but I’m going to try a few different fruit trees as well.
I really love watching the real time decision making! This was super helpful!
I got a nice dogwood at the end of my driveway. I started to air layer it a week maybe. it lost the outer protection from the wind. I replaced the dirt to secure it better and saw roots... It for sure needs a couple more weeks if I didnt just burn them with to much air. Good luck.
Good luck to you as well! I’ll bet that it will do fine. All this time later and I’m not seeing roots through the bag on mine yet. It might be time for me to open it up and see what’s happening in there.
@@willbreeze397 I did not want to open it. But I did want to redo it. I try to keep it wet every couple days. I made sure the bottom can drain out, I used regular soil. If you have a large branch it can take longer.
haha, that worm was super busy!
It fell out at one point too but got back in through the drainage holes. I ended up moving it to a pot of apple sprouts 😂
I got my mom a bonsai tool kit so she can practice, but she is afraid of pruning her plants 🤣
It’s always hard at first. Maybe she needs an inexpensive tree to practice with?
very cool!
And if you like pine trees, check out my Japanese White Pine in the linked video - ruclips.net/video/894jZWX1J4k/видео.html
herons is one of the best channels in my opinion, thanks for sharing that's a big cut - planning on doing a similar one on my brothers cherry tree
I’m glad I started air layering with something that big. The smaller ones never seem to work as well. I think it’s because there are so many leaves above which caused the roots to generate so quickly.
Very cool video, love seeing you with your mom. Learned a lot.
Cool
That was great, loved the exchange at 30:50. -Mom, "Maybe (that's enough for now and) we'll let it recover for a couple weeks?" -Will, nah I'm gonna make like 15 more cuts. 😂
If only I didn’t keep sticking my head in the way! 😂 thanks for the help with getting that tree shaped up!
I’d want taper and movement from a design. So, I’d make my cutting choices around that. My reply is 3 months after your post, what did you do?
I ended up doing the massive cut taking out the old thick leader, then a little later I shortened the smaller leader. I guess in general that’s going to create some taper, but not so much movement. That was captured in two different videos. The tree is starting to push some new buds in weird places, so it has survived so far.
Hi Will...Put it in a big pot with good soil For a few years to recover from the drastic hackback and it will finally heal...in these small pot it will take too much time... Or put it on the ground that the roots can migrate in the groundsoil for a while🤷♂️
I’ve been trying to decide what part of the back yard to take over for growing bonsai in the ground. I have a spot in mind. The cherry is also still in moss. I guess I need to wait until next spring to do the root work and get rid of the moss.
Beautiful Bloodgood Will Grüße aus Germany Rico🙋🏻♂️
Grüße! (I had to look that up 😂)
That's a bug cut. Doing a cut like that, is there a real chance the tree may die? And would it he even more so if you dont use cut paste?
I’ve seen people say that a tree can die back from the point of the cut, but I’m not sure why that is. I noticed there was a lot of moisture coming from the cut. It wasn’t dripping but it was wet. So maybe without the cut paste, it dries out further down the trunk? I don’t think it could kill the tree, but I like to leave some leaves somewhere so there is still some photosynthesis happening. Some trees will backbud out of seemingly nowhere. I saw a neighbour cut a maple to the ground, and it didn’t take long for it to start sending up shoots all over the stump. I guess it also depends on how healthy the tree is. It has some capacity to store energy somewhere to use in an emergency.
Watch the video of me shaping this years straight growth to something more interesting: ruclips.net/video/nAWJiBMUBTE/видео.html and yeah, I snapped one of the branches but you can see here that it seems to have forgiven me :-)
That was very relaxing to watch with the birds chirping in the background!
Definitely some interesting ones out. I hear the robin quite a bit, and lots of chickadees around, but there was one I don’t recognize.
Thats beautiful....i didnt know that you could air layer such a large diameter branch. I have a yoshino cherry that i have to remove a large couple of "sucker" branches on the bottom of the trunk. I figured, instead of just pruning them i could get a few other trees out if them. Your experience has inspired me...been holding off for a year or two ..going out right now to get some moss and rooting hormones... thanks!
Excellent! It’s definitely a fun way to propagate a good sized tree! If you haven’t had experience air layering before, I would definitely recommend watching some videos from different people. Everyone has different little tips and tricks, and I don’t know if I explained it well enough. I hope it works for you! Good luck!
Just found you! Happy 200th! I look forward to your journey!
Woohoo, Thanks! I see you have a few subscribers yourself ;-) looks good, I’ll check it out!
I hope it works the second time around.
Fingers crossed… that was three weeks ago, hopefully I’ll see some signs of roots soon!
Those are gorgeous! I need to do a better job of keeping track of the names of these maples. I have a little box of tags, I'll check to see if the maple you have there is in it.
Same. Here in our MN woods we have a variety of maples. I need to do a better job of identifying them.
Thanks! Yeah I guess that’s the handy thing about making videos about them. If I forget what it is I can look back at the videos 😂
The proportions now look really good for a future bonsai!
And now… we wait.
If you put a little water in your fingers the putty doesn’t stick to your fingers that much 👍
Ahh… good idea thank you! That was a really frustrating experience.
It does actually look really good
Thanks! I think it’s heading in the right direction now.
Wow...thats one massive wound...it takes 25 years to heal over, except put it in thr ground, than it takes 6 years to heal😂😂😂
Well, maybe I will give it a try. Put a tile under and away it goes. I need to clear out the moss and cut the stump, so I guess that will be next spring on this one too.
Grats...a amazing rootball for a layer 😮 You should have sawn the stump off🤷♂️
Yup, I definitely wish I had. I will have to wait until next year now. I’m curious how air layers heal on the underside. Do they heal over just like a wound on the branches?
I think if you cover the clear sheet of plastic with a piece of Alunimum foil you get bettr resuls 👍👌
Thanks, I guess I should do some testing and give it a try.
Great video. What kind of soil are you going to use now ?
I’ve been using pumice, coco coir and a little sea soil. Some people use lava rocks, but I only ever see tiny bags of it around here.
So as soon as I say there isn't small lava rocks around, I find some reasonable bags at my local nursery today :-) I'll start adding in some lava now.
In my opinion ,Its to early to go in a pot... Why dont you plant it in a Training pot and Look forward to reach a more radial Nebari? But thats only my view🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I think you are right. I should have developed the roots more. I was too eager to get a few trees into proper pots. I have lots of other skinny trees to develop though. I should probably stick a few in the ground to thicken them up.
@@willbreeze397 dig a hole, put a big tile underneath and fill it up with good soil and cut the roots around the tile once in a while but not all of them at once...while you leave it in the ground for 3 to 4 years ,you can style the tree as you like, the cuts will fast heal over...after 5 years you have a great tree to put in a pretty pot🤷♂️
@@willbreeze397 I made this fault alot myself by being impatient🤷♂️
I had a similar result 12 months ago with a Palmatum, but I cut it off and planted it. It is now leafing so hopefully what roots are there will be enough to support it.
Sounds like it’s doing well. Good luck!
Hello, I am a big fan of Yoshino Cherry trees and would like to start propagating them. I have planted over 100 trees on my land and would like to have a few thousand growing before I part this world. However, that is very expensive and I realized I could air propagate all the lower prances of the trees I have to grow more. Is there a limit of branches I can tie up with those bags on a tree? What problems do you feel I could encounter? As well, I have a beaver problem and have lost some trees I planted w0 years ago. Other than trapping the beavers do you have any suggestions on how to keep beavers away and how to save trees that have had the bark girdled by the beaver? Also, is there a size restriction limit of a tree to propagate?
Hi! That's awesome that you have a tree mission! I'm not aware of any limits on how big of a branch you can air layer. The trick will probably be that you need enough roots to support the size. Often when I take the branch off I will reduce it quite a bit to make sure there isn't too much demand on the roots. I also don't know about how many you can do at once. I've only ever done a few, but I've seen others on RUclips doing a dozen or more at once. Sorry about the beaver problems... I have no idea about that. I've seen trees before with a thin sheet metal collar, is that for beavers? Perhaps if you cover it with something they can't chew through?
@@willbreeze397 Thanks for the reply. The metal sheet idea is a great idea! I never thought of that and it is perfect for me, because I purchased 2000 pounds of thin aluminum sheet metal that was at my local Restore. I had planned to use them for roofing and siding, but I can sue some of them to save my trees from the beavers! I will be air layering nine 1.5” redbud trees all from the same trunk. It is growing in a place that I don’t want it to grow, so my goal is to move it. If it works I will post the video so others can do the same.
"And...Its all off camera.perfect.good job will...."😂😂😂😂man that was epic!!!hope you'll have success this time.
Yeah it was pretty funny. I took a look at the screen after I was done and it was zoomed in way too far :-) I cut most of it out so you didn't have to watch... lol
Couldn't have caught this video at a better time. Have a very large (and stunning) cherry blossom that is long overdo for major limbing towards Winter. Not a fan of waste so am using the larger wood peices for some woodworking projects & now I have another just as cool, if not even cooler option. Thank you for your time and energy.
Nice! If you have a chance, try and pick an area right below some interesting features. What I’m noticing now in my potted tree is that it’s just too straight. I keep thinking I’ll have to cut it down further to make for a more interesting bonsai. On the other hand, it’s still super nice as a regular tree in a pot. It doesn’t have to be a bonsai.
pretty leaves
