China does NOT need to arm Latin America, thru conventional or nuclear, to counter balance US military threat, China should, instead of, disarm US military power such as export ban on gallium, germanium, antimuonium, and many rare earth minerals to stranglehold US MIC production. After all a tiger with teeth is nothing more harmful than a big kitty.

I doubt there will be any noticeable difference either Trump or Harris got elected as the 60th president of America simply because the foreign policy establishments or deep state are too powerful to be overlooked. A series of Trumpism US presidents may prevail, but I would not bet my money on second Trump term only.

Lady Fan is your typical Taiwanese, she may not be correct in her views but she is saying things a typical Taiwanese is led to believe and often conditioned to think in a certain way. Their media is heavily controlled and influenced by U.S media and the DPP separatist party. Either way, opinions are still opinions and they change through time. I would use it as just a measure of public sentiment but nothing more. The DPP party will continue to censor the PRC media from Taiwan and trying to create a separate Taiwan identity from China. They removed Chinese history from Schools so that younger Taiwanese are not learning about China until much later which distances Taiwan from the mainland further. The fact is Taiwan is still Chinese sovereignty despite the internal matters between the two administrative governments of China. The main issue is if Taiwan's government tries to pursue independence, will the U.S support it. China cannot sit by and watch if that happens. The DPP puppet government and U.S influence in the region has made things very intense and Taiwanese do not want to fight a war, nobody wants that.

Would be foolish to arm parts of South America before you learn how much control Israel actually has there. Brazil is vacation spot and I would not be surprised if a few of Israel’s nuke subs are parked hiding next to old 40s German subs in Argentina? There are Israeli arms factories in some countries with many supporting. Cortez from US congress visits down there and reminds them they are Morano Jews from 1492.

Yes to Trump’s life being at risk for opposing the Blob. It was a rude awakening for him to discover that puppet presidents included him. We Americans are in the business of war. They are not two different things. I find now, after being informed by the realists, that I am a romantic. I would like to believe that China could just keep building a better world for itself and the Global South, create an alternative economy to the dollar, and balance US influence without a hot war. Maybe the US will unravel like the USSR and China will show the world wise and mature guidance. Wouldn’t that be nice?

I think China’s economic model has been influenced by “GDP” to the extent that the concept has become corrupting. In the dating market, capitalism changed how women value men based on wealth rather than merit. Which presents a problem of military corruption that realistically can’t be solved. This could’ve been solved if China had sent troops to Ukraine as a loyalty test, and they had neglected to utilize that opportunity.

China still has (and will still have) SCS territorial issues with the SEA countries. This prevents the general SEA public from embracing China fully and their sentiment towards China on average will remain ambivalent. But maybe this is good enough for China since the US can't increase their influence in the region (outside of the Philippines) anyway.

I think I underestimate self-interest, whatever nation, political persuasion, or for possible better system to come. Let's not rock the boat. Better for most, might not be better for me. When I listen, I sometimes wonder if I will grasp the concepts, you are about to talk on. So far, hanging in there. No wonder so many people gravitate to Trumpian answers, because it does not tax/challenge the brain at their comfort level. Someone who presents themself in a suit, wearing a tie, with official sounding title, and let's not forget, with a touch of charisma, spouts off some bellicose rhetoric as to their solution, for all evils. Person's response only need be, yes. Anxiety drops, simple; now the world is not perceivably doomed, there is a solution, even if not a flyer. Next challenge is to argue with those who have yet to buy into that world view. Thank you again.

    (1) I don't see how the U.S. would allow Lat Am, and especially Mexico, to get on the Iran track, unless the U.S. is severely weakened by an economic crisis. This is the fact pattern: Monroe Doctrine. Cuban Missile Crisis. Russia-NATO- Ukraine parallel. I feel like you yourself, not to mention the likes of a Mearsheimer, use a hypothetical of a China proxy setting up on the U.S.'s doorstep as an obviously impossible thing according to U.S. security imperatives. Bottom line: How is there not a much more material conflagration between China and the U.S. long before such a scenario could play out? (1a) Incidentally, AMLO strikes me as a bizarre aberration for the version of reality you put forth where the U.S. security establishment is both as effective and aggressive about installing U.S. puppet regimes around the world as you suggest. Am I missing something there? (I'm leaving out Lula for now, because it sounds like there has been at least a couple decades of crazy history that I would need to understand first.) Anyway, talk about a security priority for the U.S. Perhaps this is just an unfortunate parallel to Venezuela playing out in Mexico, and we are merely in the early years of an AMLO honeymoon, before Mexico spirals down in the next decade or so. I suppose it is initially hard to topple a regime that is able and willing to shower the populace with free stuff for as long as it can be sustained. Does China see Mexico as a particularly deferential partner under AMLO? That just sounds like a flashpoint waiting to happen. (2) Totally tangentially... I was really struck by the timelines and probabilities you and some of the Chinese commentators you cover have put forth concerning Taiwanese unification. Sure, the U.S. security establishment is not necessarily going to broadcast their real views, but there seems to be a naive sincerity even among U.S.-China hawks that put the risk of Chinese operation vs. Taiwan at, say, greater than 50%, but far from 100%, and not seriously contemplating anything as soon as '24 or even '25. Now, there is this video, which fits how I'd imagine things would break down for Chinese perspectives concerning Harris vs. Trump, all while Biden is nominally still the commander in chief. Finally, there's the map with the Philippines shaded pink, and I was reminded reading today of the 1951 mutual defense treaty between the U.S. and Philippines. I haven't yet studied that treaty, but in light of the recent provocations and escalations between CCG vessels and PCG vessels, do you already have in mind a scenario where China is baiting a response from the U.S. concerning the Philippines even as early as this fall (as I understand it, when the weather is most favorable for such an enterprise) in order to have a pretext for action against Taiwan? Have Chinese commentators already raised this idea and gamed it out? (3) While I'm at it, many U.S. security folk seem to talk about invasion as if it is China's only option. I don't know if you have covered it much in your past videos, but is there a Chinese perspective on the likelihood of invasion versus quarantine/blockade? Totally understand if you don't care to respond to any of these, but maybe some areas you could touch on or touch on again in future videos.

Stimulating video, Richard! I think your own views expressed towards the end of the clip are very well weighted and reasonable, but I also agree in principle with what Prof. Chen said about helping South American countries developing their own nuclear industries. I think there is no alternative to all reasonably relevant countries on the planet having some kind of nuclear capability for their own defense. Once discovered, man cannot "unknow" what he has come to know and understand. And so eventually the only way to ensure defense parity amongst all nations is not nuclear non-proliferation, but its opposite. Maybe an unpalatable point of view, yet one that has legs to stand on, in my view.

I completely agree with your analysis Richard, as far as what course China should take. If the goal of China is mutually beneficial trade partnerships through the Belt and Road Initiative's and the erosion of the US dollars global hegemony through the BRICS then they should stick to that goal. The west, more specifically the United States, has considered China a threat for many decades now. It is ingrained in both culture and policy. The US believes (or at least it is trying to convince its people to believe) that China wants to be the next global empire and to Americans that means wielding power like we historically have. Yes, there are many who also believe this is true for Russia as well. Both so-called "parties" in the US have very similar goals in this respect. That is exactly why there is a proxy war with Russia in Ukraine, that is exactly why the US is arming Taiwan, and making other provocative moves with the Philippines, Thailand, and the rest of the South China Sea. Both US parties are imperial parties and work for those ends. The very thought that the US empire is in full decline and the dollar is losing its global hegemony is unthinkable to the ruling elite here but it was bound to happen eventually. All "great empires," eventually over-extended themselves, spending untold fortunes on military expansion and dominance abroad while hollowing-out their home country. Ignoring their own people suffering, needs and desires for a better quality of life. Domestically the anger is boiling over and the politics has become cartoonish. Neither party has solutions but they do have nuclear weapons. They are desperate and desperate people do foolish things. What China has been able to do in a few decades took the west centuries. It has learned from the mistakes of the west and opened the doors to a revolutionary system of trade based on mutually beneficial cooperation, opposed to gunpoint diplomacy. By seeking to get militarily involved in Ukraine or even the horrific genocide of the Palestinian people, China has chosen to take a reserved path of actual diplomacy and negotiations. China should continue to grow, prosper, trade and strengthen the BRICS+ countries. The key to this is a trade currency that all countries can agree upon. I would suggest something like Keynes concept of the Bancor. It's not my idea but a consensus that I believe is the most egalitarian way to further BRICS along. Any military intervention could be potentially dangerous and it is the west that is acting recklessly, playing with literal nuclear annihilation. Securing Taiwan and your sea routes and trade is obvious. The west shouldn't be there in the first place. However, such a provocation like Prof. Chen was describing, is not something Mearsheimer would advocate at all. This could actually rally American support for WW3. The US, even with NATO cannot even continue to arm Ukraine much longer while arming Israel and at the same time stock piling weapons for Taiwan, and even planning for a war with Iran. There is simply no plausible way any of this can be done and a full on war with Russia, China or Iran is just a fantasy. The only thing left, again, is nuclear weapons. I can't tell another country what to do. My own country is a basket-case and neither party, nor presidential candidates should be trusted nor their "promises" taken seriously, especially during a presidential campaign. That said, the mutually beneficial trade China is promoting is the biggest threat of all to the west. It is the ideological threat that countries can in fact work together, not to align for war, but to build a better world. That kind of hope is the most valuable gift China could ever give the world. It's that kind of work that may actually prevent nuclear war. It's that kind of global perspective that may actually save humanity.

Sadly, as a Latin American, I think the best strategy for China is probably to develop ties with Africa and replace Latin America as main suppliers of commodities. If China is stronger, and Brazil plays it's cards well, and luck helps, Brazil and Southern South America might reach a level of independence from the US. Otherwise it's likely the US will strengthen its position jn the western hemisphere, rather than weaken it, as it concentrates resources while fighting losing battles in Africa and SEA and possibly the Middle East. While for China I'd be better to see the US busy here, for us it's better than the US stretches it's resources all over the world.

I think your takeaway couldn't be more wrong. There has always been a healthy debate about inflation in the US, with many critiques of the Federal Reserve and the CPI, disaggregating the figures and understating inflation figures. That has always been a big controversy, and there is no censorship. There are different camps of thought - Keynesians vs Austrian economic thinkers, and I would say the main stream media has mostly sided with the former - but that doesn't mean the matter is settled. But compare that to critiquing the economic figures in China - in the US, the figures are publicly disclosed and scrutinized, vs in China you will get thrown in jail if you go against the gov't's figures. Look at how they cracked down on and raided the offices of foreign financial research firms like Mintz Group, Bain & Co, and Capvision earlier this year. They can't control their economic research, and they need complete control of the narrative, so it was labeled 'espionage'. Those firms do their own economic research, which obviously has to be squashed! US media loves negative stories, even about the US. There was definitely a doom-loop narrative when pension funds of local municipalities were going under, but the news media also has a short memory. There does seem to be a cycle, but I don't know how you can call it censorship compared to what China does. If it's not completely positive news about China, then you better have permission from the top to write about it! It's also interesting how in the beginning this guy insinuates how bad it is that the US spies on China. When I see stories in Chinese media about how the US is spying on China, it's usually about things like economic data, environmental data, and even GIS data - all things that China SHOULD be publishing anyway, like the rest of the civilized world. But when China is spying, they're stealing military schematics from the government and Intellectual Property from companies. Speaking of Gorbachev, a historical fun fact: When Gorbachev came to power in 1985 and wanted facts and data about the state of the Soviet economy (which industries were hurting, which cities needed support, where food shortages were) his advisors were so unreliable (either because they had been programmed to lie and paint a rosy picture due to fear of reprisal or because the reporting systems were so broken) that he had to get economic statistics for his own country from KGB agents who were stealing information from highly accurate CIA reports. China has a similar problem from its suppression of economic data. Economic studies are important and HELPFUL. During the Cultural Revolution, many Chinese starved because the local leaders would lie about their agricultural output because they were afraid of their superiors, which lead to over-collection and starvation. China will only report on their negative stories if they absolutely have to - that is the rest of the world is talking about it and they can't hide it.

The Latin American elites are bound to the US financially and culturally, however they are increasingly economically dependent on China, especially in Brazil. I believe this leverage of China, plus increasing soft power and direct economic investment, might help the region drift away from the US. Historicaly when these drifts happened the local elites allied with the US to make coups to bring the region back to alignement... However the new economic role of China may tip the balance away from that result, by strengthening the autonomist/nationalist factions inside Latin America and chipping away members of the elite from the pro-US to a pro-China or neutral camp. This is very possible as the rural, mining and otherwise commodity export elite of Brazil and Argentina, but particularly Brazil, is hugely dependent on China, and competitive with US agriculture. So this is a much more feasible path, I think, and also of lower cost to China. However, I think for Latin America the stability of Harris is better than the rallying of Trump. Tensions later means the balance of power chips away from the pro-US faction, so tensions now will tend to force a struggle, which is more likely than in the future to result in a pro-US regime change. If this happens, the US will have consolidated Latin America under its hegemony

The only place in Latin America that might become like Iran today is Venezuela. I don't see Brazil going that way any time soon. The Americans will invade Venezuela if it starts going the nuclear route, though

Number one: make youth the only pension security for adults and keep adults poor, making them reproduce to 1,5 billions. Number two: put everyone from age 15 in forced labor 15 hours a day, build bars on every window so they dont suicide. Number three: claim what a great civilization you are by economically outgrowing the West where people have 30-40 hours work weeks and social security !

He's right about Trump for the wrong reasons. Trump is better for the Taiwan thing because he's a realist and has said repeatedly that the issue is more or less settled in China's favor because of geography-there's not a thing the US could really do when push comes to shove. He reiterated this somewhat recently as well. He's not battling the deep state-he's connected to it. If Trump truly opposed the deep state then that incel with the sniper rifle would've actually split Trump's wig. The point of the deep state is to keep America secure for its richest, most powerful citizens, including Trump. The fact that he's a realist on the Taiwan issue probably doesn't endeer him to the deep state but hopefully the deep state had its realists as well.

For example, both Trump and Harris would be willing to bomb Belt and Road projects in SE Asia, Africa, Latam, etc. if it meant furthering geopolitical objectives (and they could get away with it). Trump's as much "Deep State" as anyone else (well, maybe not Obama or Clinton)

putins comment is not relevant. he said that if someone captured him in other countries it will be war. south america can be won only ideologically. like spain did with catolcizm, or ussr did with communism. china does not have any ideology for export. us became a leader in liberalism, to beat us china should become even more liberal. or create a new religion which is even more unrealistic

U.S is a war economy, it had transformed itself to the military industrial complex where people earn money from jobs creation in making weapons and money laundering through expensive arm development and sales. It needs to transition away to become a real economy for peace time. As people always say, U.S is in a permanent state of war one way or another. Common Europeans are against the war, only the European politician are pushing for these wars and they have betrayed their own country.

Maybe China doesn't need to be so considerate or react to condemn criticism of their actions all the time. Political status works the same like social status. The popular kids don't try to people please or worry about what others think and yes, they absolutely think they run everything too, which is why US military presence and weapons sales are the norm. American elites don't care what other countries think of Israel and Gaza. Literally zero fucks given. China seems to care too much about what others think and always tries to make itself appear better in front of others because it cares about face. US knows its negative propaganda on China is very triggering, so US finds it funny when China gets all triggered over it. Oppositely, with everyone emphasizing the internal problems that US has, US elites seem unfazed and completely shameless by all the negative criticism.

Doesn't make sense. To begin with, Trump was the US President who inaugurated the explicitly anti-China agenda. Trump may be good to achieve peace in Ukraine and maybe even able to dislodge the Moscow-Beijing alliance to some extent (???) but should not cede an inch re. China, all the opposite. Re. Latin America, only Brazil has the size to become a nuclear power (Mexico???) and we see how the CIA meddles with the likes of Pakistan, which is also a nuclear power. The real issue is class and sociological structure: those are countries, sadly enough, dominated by "comprador bourgeoisies", which are less nationalist and much more ready to subserve someone else. Brazil's consolidation as great power seems to demand strong industrialization (not there yet, Mexico is advancing faster in that path in fact) and that seems to demand some sort of revolution that Brazil never experienced in its history. It's a structural issue in any case rather that one of merely military might. Ironically Brazil was into nuclear weapon development under the US-sponsored military dictatorship of the 80s, they also had some ambitious plans to project influence not just in Latin America but also into Africa, especially the former Portuguese colonies.

@@Awakening_Richard - I understood that but I don't think that matters much: controlling or not the "deep state" is an internal US affair. Maybe the US secret services need a shake up and will improve after Trump does that (if he can) or maybe Trump is just bluffing again and he's totally in cahoots with the "deep state" anyhow. The "deep state" is not such an homogeneous thing and what matters the most is not high ranking spies and generals, but who owns the money: the oligarchs. This is particularly true in the USA, maybe less in more "political" regimes such as Russia or China but definitely in an oligarchic republic like the USA where money means almost everything: who owns the wealth, owns the media and owns the politicians... and owns the deep state even.

@@Awakening_Richard - Doesn't make sense: invading is invading and the rest is tactics. And anyhow my previous reply to you vanished (YT random censorship?, it's becoming very difficult to have conversations in this space, really) What I said is that: (1) I wasn't arguing against you but against Chen Ping and (2) that deep state matters much less than the concert of oligarchs, who are the ones who actually rule the USA (and in general any capitalist country): the deep state manages, doesn't direct.
