Grow Lavender to Make a Broom: A Handmade Broom Tutorial - Broom Making at Home
Hi Everyone!
This is a peek inside my workshop and how I create a handmade broom using dried lavender and seasoned curly willow. I started making brooms over ten years ago when I was looking a way to use lavender stems after the buds had been stripped off. I just hated throwing them on the burn pile. I use a modified old world broom making technique that I share with you in the video. My brooms I make go to happy customers all over the country. My brooms are used for rituals, weddings, rustic decor, and unique gifts.

I usually just cut the bottom inch off if my plants get root bound. Seems to help the plant
Which varieties are best for cooking if you don't want the medicine flavor?
English lavenders. The Latin name will start with angustifolia. My favorite is Royal Velvet. There is a great tasting French lavender called Provence. Hope this helps.
I don't think you showed my lavender...it's named Goodwin Creek lavender.
Nope. I don’t have any Goodwin Creek. I hear it’s an beautiful French lavender! How’s the aroma?
Misleading video. This was merely how to put seeds into soil, not how to grow the actual plant, flower...
Click on the link for my free detailed growers guide you can download. Tons of information for you! Enjoy
You are amazing lavender lady ! Please show us more your videos. I just got 2 lavender plants for my family. The first one is Spanish Lavender and the second is English Lavender. Wish you the best for your work and life. 👍💯💜
Thank you so much for your information 💜
Do all lavender types need 8 hours of sun?
Lavender loves full sun. It can grow is less light but it will grow slower, have bigger leaves, and fewer flower spikes in partly shady conditions. The plant will also grow in the direction of the most light. Hope this helps!
The lady nicely and expertly described the different types of lavender. Now I know I have a Spanish Lavender. Thank you!
❔I live on the Oregon Coast in Zone 9b about a mile inland from the ocean. Is there a lavendar that might work in costal conditions? Thank you for your wonderful video! 😊🌟

Hey
I have Sarah Bernhardt Peony plant I want to put Lavender plant near it. I want a good smelling lavender plant that will smell good with peony smell , get rid of mosquitoes and look good together with Sarah Bernhardt Peony . Plz suggest me which lavender plant I should get English, Spanish or French Lavender plant. Thanks in advance .
I think an English lavender would be lovely. Keep in mind lavender likes minimal water.
@@SauvieIslandLavenderFarm thanks for replying me back and thanks for your advice .
Thanks Julie, it's a big help
Now I know I have French and Spanish lavenders. Thank you.

THANK YOU FANTASTIC INFO...NEW SUB! BE BLESSED.

Great video. The only thing missing is zones. I live in zone 6a. Is there any that will survive?
Very informative, thank you!❤
Thank you for the information
Hi Julie.. My grandsons gave me 4 2" Spanish Lavender seedlings back in June. They are 10-12" tall now. I live in Canada. We can get nasty winter weather. 🥶 They are in small fabric bags. Do you think they will survive winter If I put the small bags into large bags, filled them with leaves and brought them into the shed? Or Dig a hole put bags in and cover ? This is my first time growing Lavender. Time is running out I can not find any help for winterizing such young plants. If you have a video , can you send me the link. I couldn't find it ... Cheers from Toronto
Spanish variety can be finicky with cold temps. Let me know how the bags work!
wow that was the fastest reply I've ever had 😂😂Were you just sitting there waiting for me lol 😂😂 What would you do with them ? Do you have any ideas ?@@SauvieIslandLavenderFarm
This was perfect. Researching for the upcoming season. Thanks!
Wonderful idea and great tutorial! Thabk you for sharing your idea. Me and the gals liie to get together to do a craft this time of year and broom making was on the list.
Well, if SHTF ever, and society gets upended -- I'll at least be able to harvest all the lavender from the neighborhood and make a broom out of it. I'll be the "broom-maker" and people will come to me for brooms. 😅I found this video because I have some dried rosemary twigs and a handful of dried lavender stems and wanted to make a mini halloween witchy broom decoration with it. I didn't think lavender brooms as an actual broom was a thing though, this is pretty cool. Thanks for sharing!
What kind of commercial grade weed cloth are you using?
Not sure of the brand but it has a 20 year lifespan. It’s dark thick and has green measurements lines woven in. It can be ordered up to 12 foot widths. I prefer 3 ft width and got my last few rolls at my local feed and seed store.
We gotta get you some nice knee pads; we can't have you putting all that pressure on your knees on those rocks. We've only got one pair of knees :)
I need help brining back to life my indoor Spanish lavender 😭 please post a video on that. Specially when it comes down to trimming 😢
If i do this the seeds will be in the towel?? I want to make sure I collect some seeds for my next harvest
Can you tell me please, do deer eat the lavender, or will they naturally leave it alone? Loved this video, as we purchased a home in southern Oregon and would like to plant lavender. Hoping to find both English and French varieties. BTW, my husband lived on Sauvie Island in the late 80’s. Such a beautiful place!
It is a deer resistant plant.
I just picked a random one with no blooms, didn't understand all the info, good to hear it is the grosso because that's the one I prefer
What is it that comes through?
The best explanation I’ve ever watched about the differences. I’ve been trying to figure out which kinds I have and what I can use them for, but all the information out there is contradicting each other. Even the tags on my plants were wrong. I just harvested a big container full of English lavender and am excited to use it in the kitchen. Looking forward to harvesting my French lavender plants in a couple of weeks, too.
Thank you!
This is great. Thank you!
I have no idea what Lavender I bought I got it just to display on my outdoor new shelves lol. Now I know I have French Lavender because it has very strong fragrance. So informative I learned something new today. Thank you!
Thank you for tip on cutting back flowers in 1st year to strengthen root system! Could be a key reason why my lavenders dies here in Las Vegas. 💜
Do you have lavender for sale I can plant in my yard I'm in zone 8 are 8b
Sorry, no.
Gracis, muy informativo
Don't forget to wear a mask over your nose and mouth when mixing perlite in.
What kind of sand? Is this type of mix good for potted lavender? Spanish lavender?
Thank you💐
I bought some lavender yesterday and I thought that lavender was just lavender. I was expecting the lavender you see in provence France but it has no flowers on it- so I don't know if it's supposed to bloom or if it's just the lavender leaves. It's a learning experience though.
Yes, it will bloom!
Was this video ever a big help. I bought a lavender plant, and have no clue what and where to cut. Your visual was so helpful. Thank you so much for this.
