Montessori Dollar Store Haul #3
Here is a quick display of some of the things I got for my toddler from my latest dollar store trips. I usually hit up around 2 stores, as each one will have some different items.
Finding mainly Montessori practical life things is what dollar stores are the best!

Why I'm NOT using Montessori beads (and what I did instead)

Today I'm sharing with you some strategies I use to make my life easier and my bank account less stressed when it comes to providing tools for my children to foster their independence. The Cost of Montessori at Home: how expensive is it really?

Today's video centres around the Montessori Observation, a central strategy to following the Montessori method at home or in a class. WHAT TO READ AS A MONTESSORI PARENT // for you and any aged child

Honestly, it depends where your child will be attending school afterwards. It's all about reducing the "culture shock" during transitions. For me, I knew my child wasn't going to attend a Montessori school here, so it did not make sense to introduce the colour sequence. The colour sequence shows up in Montessori math materials all the way to grade 6 (arguably into grade 7/8 dependind), so it would make sense if that was the road for your child. Thanks for watching and hope this helps!

@pujabhowmik7103 that's enough. It is simpler in English than in other languages like Spanish or French. It's acceptable to say either "Yesterday, I told me kids to play". If you add the past participle, there is a consequence action. "Yesterday I had told my kids to play because they had said they were bored."

I'd say start with lots of observation to see what types of activities they are drawn to (usually posting, pounding and object permanence become popular with kids at this age), then provide one or two options at a time. Think practical life activities (self care, participation in chores by proxy), nature walks, reading, etc. Hope this helps!

I have been reminding myself of this lately for sure! Materials don't trump philosophy. My area doesn't have a Montessori school and we homeschool so it has been a struggle to implement some of the ideas and theories and lessons without all the expensive materials. I often also wonder what Dr. Montessori would think about how expensive this has become understanding that this was created for children in poverty stricken areas.

@Honestly Kay Excellent, excellent point! I have wondered that the main reason why these materials are so expensive is that few people have DEVELOPED the skills to make these items!! If you or your husband were skilled in basic woodworking, you could make these for a fraction of the price!! Of course you would have to invest in tables, saws, and sanders, but the pieces themselves would be relatively inexpensive. 😄

@Honestly Kay Excellent, excellent point! I have wondered if the main reason why these materials are so expensive is that few people have DEVELOPED the skills to make these items!! If you or your husband were skilled in basic woodworking, you could probably make these for a FRACTION of the Nienhuis manufacturing price!! Now granted, Nienhuis products are gorgeous, but I think that a woodworker could produce something equally gorgeous!! And I bet there are woodworkers out there who have made their own gorgeous Montessori materials! I’m looking for them, and am very curious to learn what they spent!!! Of course, to make the items, you would have to invest in tables, saws, and sanders, but the pieces themselves would be relatively inexpensive. 😄
