Blue Mountain Makes Knitting Podcast | Ep. 33 Yara shawl, Stria Cardigan and Outline Tee/Tank
Hey there! Long time, no pod!
Summer definitely got away from me! I'm working full time and now back in school full time, too, so between those obligations and fun weekends over the summer there wasn't much time for knitting or podcasting but I'm finally back in my groove! Fall is slowly taking hold here in the Shenandoah Valley and I've been trying to knock out some projects before sweater weather is officially here.
I hope you're having a great start to fall (if you're in the northern hemisphere) and if you're going to Rhinebeck this year, I hope to see you there!!
Here are the patterns I discussed this time:

#knit #knitting #knittingpodcast #knittingpatterns Links below! I've been on hiatus for quite a while, but this week I'm back with a little update about what's been on my needles for the past few months. The knitting mojo was super low for the first part of this year, but I did manage to finish a few things since my last update. My Brienne Cardigan is in heavy rotation in my spring wardrobe. It...

#knit #knitting #knittingpodcast #knittingpatterns Links below! This week is a little shorter than usual (probably for the best!). My only finished object this week is my Cosmo Cardigan, made from my handspun merino paired with Drops Kid Silk. It was a very enjoyable knit and I've already gotten a ton of wear out of it (even if most of it has just been around the house lol). I have another card...

#knit #knitting #knittingpodcast We did it! We survived another year and now it's time to reflect on all of the good, the bad and the ugly knits of 2023. I had way more to share than I thought! This is a long one! I shared a little bit about each piece I made in 2023 and my feelings about each item. All of these projects have been featured on the podcast in the past year and (most) have project...

Blue Mountain Makes Podcast | Episode 8: The Andrea Mowry Hour?!
I'm glad your back. I have missed you. My summer was up n arms too. Hubby had emergency open heart so have not picked up needles for a bit. Weather's turning and I'm itching to get to my halibut and sunset highway.
Nice to see you
It was nice to finally record again!
@@bluemountainmakes ❤️❤️❤️
Your Yara turned out so well!
Yay, hi Maylinn! I’ve been worried about you. So glad to watch your podcast 😊
Take care of yourself, busy lady. It was nice to catch up with your knits.
Thank you!!!
That shawl is beautiful!
Thank you! I love her shawl patterns - they all look so sophisticated and complicated but are actually really easy to knit.
Great to see you again. That shawl is beautiful, well done! And that sunset…wow! How long does the extra course you are doing go for?
Years 😫 Lol. It's going to take me about a year and a half to finish my degree, so I'm in it for a while!
@@bluemountainmakes - I’m just posting to see if you are all ok, I live in Australia so I’m not exactly sure where you are located in the USA yet I feel like you may be near where that hurricane went. Just hoping you are all ok.
Glad to see you back. Beautiful projects as always.
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for making the effort for this update. I'm sorry for your summer setbacks, but you seem to be back in the groove. The Yara shawl is gorgeous, and your nearly completed warmer sweaters are delightful. Work on the things you love and by happy.
Wonderful advice! Thank you!
I was just thinking about your podcast. I’m so glad you recorded and are here. Everything is beautiful ❤ - Kimberly
Thank you so much!
🤗 you are back. Nice podcast. Summer knitting depression is normal. Hope you are better and we will see you more.
Summer knitting depression is the perfect way to describe that lol. I'm going to steal that phrase for the future!
Missing seeing your videos. Life does get busy. Thank you for sharing
Good to see you again!
I had look you up as you have been disappeared from my feed. But I am happy to see you back. ❤
So happy to see you back! I really enjoy your videos so much 😊
I loved the first Lunae Shawl by Natasja Hornby. The mustard gold color is so brave and wonderful on your part. I just discovered you because of this shawl. You are so talented to interpret this in a new way.
I’m so glad you ain’t dead!
Me too! Lol
Mary Lynn, so nice to see you again! Yeah Pallet! Yeah Drops! Yeah baby chickens! Alpine Bloom contrast, your first choice is best I like your contrast for the Dale sweater.
Thanks for weighing in!!
Hello, fellow Drop user ❤
I really love Drops yarns. I just wish they sold it in the States! (Thank goodness for online shopping and international shipping lol)
So happy you are back! I always find great value in your experiences with your beautiful projects. Sigh, yes I feel you on the busty lady problems when it comes to sweaters. Everything looks amazing on flatter chests. Having the same thing stretched out in one area doesnt look the same lol. Nevermind trying to find balance without the body hanging like a shapeless tent off the "balcony" haha. Your random stories like the birds in the bath lol are very endearing. Never stop sharing them please.
The big chest thing is really a pain when it comes to clothes in general. I’m at the point where I’m grateful that I can make some of my own clothes because of the available modifications - finding ready to wear stuff has been a nightmare lately! I’m going to start using the tent off the balcony reference 😂 that cracked me up!
Missed you so happy to have you back. Mary Lynn I hear you on the lack of knitting mojo. we have moved half way across Canada (Ontario to Nova Scotia) into out new first purchased home and I have not had any mojo for months at this point due to all the stresses of moving and the dealing with daily life stuff on top of that its been too much for my poor body and brain to handle. That oddly constructed Cardigan is calling my name it looks so great. Once the house is done might have to make a trip to one of the local yarn shops and see about making that sweater. Happy knitting but most of all happy life!
Congrats on the new house! Moving in general is stressful enough and even worse when you’re moving so far away. Don’t stress the details too much - things will sort themselves out over time at the new place and you’ll be back to knitting in no time!
Marylinn, I was so excited to see your podcast pop up this morning! I’m enjoying catching up with your knits as I knit. I’ve already added two new things to my queue ☺️
Woo hoo! I’m always happy to hear people are adding to their knitting wish lists :)
Glad to see you’re back - weather in Northern Europe is weird, too - my garden has been invaded by slugs🤮. Quick question - anyone knitted the Stepaside by Jennifer Beale? I really wanna knit it but wee bit afraid
Omg slugs are my weird phobia. They freak me out bad enough that I don’t go outside at night in the summer lol. Good luck getting them out of the garden!! Also, that pattern is on my to knit list! I found it over the winter and I love it! I haven’t seen anyone review the pattern yet but I think you should go for it!
All your knitting is beautiful 😍 but what absolutely amazes me is the fact that you walked into TSC and walked out with only 4 chicks. My husband has banned me bc I can't go in and not bring home at least 10 😅
I hear you on the TSC temptation 😂 We had some food allergy issues with one of our dogs and finally found a good brand at TSC and I’ve been so proud of myself these past months going in and NOT walking out with chicks lol. I guess it was just a matter of time 😂
I'm so happy to see you didn't leave us forever. I love to see your projects and to listen to your comments about each one. Your feedback on patterns and yarns is much appreciated. I look forward to your next episode, whenever the mood strikes you.
Thank you so much!
Glad to see you back knitting. 😊 You should use your hand spun (the first yarn you showed) for the Alpjne Bloom sweater. The colors go well with the solid yarn. Hope you have an enjoyable summer 🏖️🍹🚤
I have that color combo sitting together in my office to “feel it out” and I think it’s growing on me! I hope you have a great summer, too!
I just finished an Elisabeth sweater with that same purple Upcycle Alpaca that I bought during the $2 sale. It's such a lovely color.
Congratulations on getting yourself to do the buttons 🎉
I'm working on my Jessamine bobble cardi from Noro magazine. I started my swatch for Caitlin Hunter Halibut. I'm close to finishing a quilt top for a friend with blocks his mother made before alzhimer set in. He wanted his wife to have a quilt with fabric from his mom's stash. I'm super stoked and honored to fishing it for him.
Yay on the Cosmo! Beautiful! And your handspun is awesome. Enjoy the party and I look forward to your next upload.
Your hand spun is beautiful! You should be very proud of that gorgeous cardigan!
I finally decided on colors for my halibut. I was going to use stash yarn but color was not right. I went with berroco vintage dk in Boysenberry for main color and cream for contrast. I'm excited to cast on.
Thank you for being a knitting podcast that isn’t always about the new things but shows the thrifty, budget friendly, disciplined (finishing a project instead of buying new needles) side of things!❤ It is encouraging to see more of that😊
Thanks! Knitting gets to be so expensive so quickly that I think it can be intimidating for some people, especially newer knitters. I love being able to show people that you don’t always have to have the most expensive yarns to make a beautiful project.
I’m a bit late to this party yet thoroughly enjoyed seeing all your makes and the pro’s and con’s. You are talented and your sense of humour is wonderful.
Thank you so much!!
I am SOOO glad you used stash for your test knit pullover instead of selecting new yarns/colors. The colors used are GORGEOUS together! I need to be more fearless like you
I really struggle with color choices but I think since I stash dived out of my comfort zone for my Aurora Cabin shawl and I loved the end result so much it gave me confidence to be adventurous again with my test sweater. My best advice for stash diving and mixing colors is to pick your yarns and place them somewhere in your house that you’ll see them throughout the day. I put mine in my living room for a day or two and see how I feel about the colors together at different times of the day in different lighting, see if any one color catches my eye in a bad way when I walk into the room, or if the color combo grows on me the more I look at it.
@@bluemountainmakes good advise. i will try that. Thank you
so sorry to be a bearer of bad news :( The reason the cardigan keeps falling off your shoulders is the design. Adding to the neckline will not solve the problem. Perhaps you can rip out the neckline and a few rows of the sweater and knit a colorwork hat (thinking each row of cut yarn from the cardigan would be enough to go a round a hat at least twice, making it worth using for colorwork).
I’ve heard from a few other people that had the same problem with the design/fit 🙁 It’s a real bummer but you’re right - I might be able to salvage enough for a hat down the road. Especially the yarn from the sleeves and the shawl color since none of that’s cut!
The Zweig was also my favourite sweater that I made in 2023. We have a similar body type, so I went with the size 3 for it. Made me buy another Caitlin Hunter pattern when she had a sale. I got the Sunset Highway. I knit it in size 4 cause it is supposed to be oversize but damn! I was finished with the body and most of one sleeve. The more I fit it on the less I liked it. So I frogged the whole thing. Took a couple of weeks break from returning to knit it in size 3. When I'm done with the yoke and feel the body is still too big, I will do the same decreases you did for the body of your Zweig. I also have to up my needle size for colourwork. Thank you for sharing your 2023 knits! I get a lot of value from the stuff you learnt from the patterns and how the yarns that you used performed. Happy knitting in 2024!
I’m glad to hear you also like your Zweig! I love Caitlin’s patterns because I always feel like the end result is what I expected from the project. It’s nice being able to trust the process lol. Good luck with that Sunset Highway! Sounds like it’s been a trip so far!
I really enjoyed watching your review of your knits. Thanks for sharing! I remember when you were knitting the Spark. I was knitting mine at the same time in woolly Noro. I heavily modified the pattern, but I had a similar issue with the fit through the shoulders. Fortunately, my momma was at my house for Christmas and it fits her beautifully. Maybe you’ll find someone you love that will fit your lovely Spark too.
Glad to hear your spark found a good home (and that I’m not the only one with the funky shoulder fit!).
It occurred to me today that it might be an issue with bottom-up cardigans. I knit a Gambier this year also and am having similar bulky weirdness in the shoulders/neck. 🧐
That "mystery" yarn reminds me of lionbrand amazing
The colors look close to that but it wasn’t quite so fuzzy as the Amazing when I initially knit it. It’s just turning into a bunch of fuzz while I wear the sweater 😂
What an amazing collection. I really enjoyed hearing the details of how items wear and issues you faced while knitting. I’m with you - let’s make 2024 a great year.
Let’s do it!! 🙌🏻
This video was so fun!!! Love the knits and detail. I knot 37 items last year but a lot socks and such. I don't know.. Somehow it didn't feel like a lot. I want to make the traveler and Pink Fizz. - Kimberly
37 is crazy! Good for you!!
I still love your Easy V so much!!! It’s gorgeous.
Thanks!
Question: Are the sleeves tight on the traveler? I want to make one eventually, but I have some tree trunk upper arms. A lot of Andrea Mowrys sweaters look like the sleeves are tight in the pictures, but this one looks fine.
A lot of her sleeves are definitely tight but I think the Traveller is pretty roomy all the way around. Mine fits really comfortably all over
@@bluemountainmakes Thank you 😊 it looks nice and roomy.
I think you did a great job on your Traveller Hoodie and the color choice for the icord is perfect.
Thank you!
Lots of great knits! Hope you're staying safe. I practically have a river in my front yard from the storm. It wasn't too bad though.
That sounds rough! We ended up getting pretty soggy but no major issues in my area. Only 20 minutes north of us had snow and ice and a few bad interstate wrecks. The weather is crazy!!
It is so nice to see you! I'll be honest, and I think I mentioned it before but I do love Andrea's patterns and they fit so well, but by far the most boring to knit, haha! I hate saying it but it's true. Although, her patterns are wonderful and they come out right each time. Love your shawl and hat! I need to start spinning this year. I've been a chicken! Cute snowman hat!! All the best, Kimberly
Spinning is the best! I had some reservations going into it but I’m so glad I finally jumped in and started. You’re definitely right on Andrea’s patterns lol. The fact that they’re simple make them easy to knit but sometimes a little bit of a struggle lol. I almost always have one of her designs on my needles though!
Same with one of her patterns. There so wearable too. I'm intimidated most with the plying. I'll learn tho. It's my goal, haha! @@bluemountainmakes
I finished my Traveller hoodie too! I did ok with the process, but I love wearing mine too. I used Knit Picks Upcycle Alpaca which has some acrylic too. I made mine longer to have plenty of coverage. 😊🧶🧶🧶
I just cast on the Dustland shawl with that yarn! It’s been nice to work with so far and I bet it made a super comfy hoodie!
My 2023 Temperature blanket is made of Knit Picks Upcycle Alpaca Blend Worsted, so I have been knitting with it on a daily basis for almost a year. I love it. My colors are mostly jewel tone, greens, blues, purples and grays with a bit of tans for the really hot days. The blanket is just garter with i-cord edges and a few rows of ribbing between the months, so I can't say much about stitch definition for patterns but it looks great in the garter, really squishy. Great episode, always lovely when you share with us.
I also bought SQ of the upcycle alpaca-but I got 3 because o have no chill. A SQ of alpaca for $10? Yes please
No kidding! And it seems like pretty good quality, too.
Happy Birthday! Your videos are enjoyable. Any chance in seeing more of your dogs?
Thank you for the birthday wishes! The dogs are always hanging around in the videos but they're usually napping (and snoring) at my feet. I'm sure they'll keep popping into videos in the future!
Your sweater is BEAUTIFUL! Love it!!! Happy Early Birthday! I love Mowry's patterns, they're so wearable, but somehow I too always get a tad bored. haha! ALL THE BEST! - Kimberly
I hear you on the boredom. I'm finally working on the hood part of the Traveller today and I'm so done with this project at this point lol.
@@bluemountainmakes hahahaha!
